Runnin' of the Green Guide

ROCHESTER’S RACING SEASON STARTS NOW

A ROCHESTER TRADITION

This wonderful race, in some form, has existed in Rochester for close to 40 years! Run for the Shamrocks has results back to 1985 and Bill Kehoe continued the tradition with Runnin’ of the Green. It has long been recognized as the unofficial start of Rochester’s spring racing season.

It is fun to look back at the history and I take personally the goal to do right by this race. We were the first race in over 10 years to move their start/finish line to the heart of downtown and we are the only race to feature a start and finish right on our Main St in Rochester.

We are expecting the largest turnout this year since 2012!! Looking forward, I hope to keep expanding the event in small, positive ways. This year we have a few new additions:

Green-est Race in Rochester: We are working to make this race more sustainable and reduce waste where we can. We have started this year with a ‘ZERO WASTE’ water stop and will be sweeping the race course post-run with an electric vehicle and volunteers to leave our city cleaner than when we arrived. Runners could also choose a no shirt/no medal option to reduce waste and a discount on their entry fee! We collaborated with the Ecology Partners and Impact Earth to include more effective recycling and waste management throughout the race, and we'll have our nutrition recycling bin on site. We are working to make strides each year without sacrificing your race experience.

Ruck and Walk options: “I’m not a runner” is a phrase we hear way too often. Personally, I have always thought of a runner as someone who is putting one foot in front of the other at their speed. I want people to know that we want “runners” of all abilities in our race and spanning a distance with your two feet is all we are asking. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy watching and celebrating the fastest in our community as I admire what it takes to move as they do. But I equally admire what it takes to do more than you think you’re capable of, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, or setting your personal goal and achieving it.

Party tent on parcel 5: We still have a great after party inside the Mercantile, but we have added a tent on parcel 5 to encourage people to stay for the parade and enjoy the day! Everyone is welcome to join in here too, regardless if you ran the race! We are glad you are joining us.

Cheers to another great year of Runnin’ of the Green. And may we continue to Run Our City.

FAQ & PARKING

COURSE MAP

The course has a long straightaway for runners to create some space before a hard left turn onto Exchange Blvd. The start gives you a quick jolt to your race with a downhill beginning.

The race is a flat and fast, out-and-back course. You will get to see the entire field along the way in a sea of green and can hopefully spot and cheer on a few friends! As you come back toward downtown, you’ll cross the finish line right by parcel five and enjoy drinks and snacks inside the Mercantile.
