Upon his appointment to the Music Director post, Maestro Delfs remarked that the RPO inspires him to “pull out all the stops,” creatively and musically. That certainly showed in his first season here in Rochester, as he and Jeff Tyzik crafted a season to remember after a year and a half without your RPO.

This triumphant return would not have been possible without your loyal support through the pandemic—thanks to you, our donors, 100% of orchestra musicians remained employed throughout 2020 and 2021. It’s your support that allowed the musicians of the RPO to remain focused on their artistry, making this exceptional season all the better.

education & Community engagement

When your RPO was founded in 1922, the vision was to foster Rochester’s growth as “a truly musical city,” in the words of George Eastman. As a civic orchestra with broad involvement and support, education and community programming has always been central to the RPO—in fact, this orchestra was one of the first in the country to create a music education program for children.

Today, our mission in the community is as inclusive as ever. A third of the RPO’s orchestral services are dedicated to education and community engagement, ranging from our education concerts to open rehearsals for the Alzheimer’s Association to side-by-sides with the ROCmusic Collaborative. On top of those services, our musicians are deployed individually and in small ensembles throughout the year as part of special community partnerships such as the Care & Wellness Initiative.

The civic spirit that defined the orchestra’s founding lives on today through your support. The programs here are the most dependent on philanthropy, as they’re provided free of charge to those impacted. Without your support, the RPO could not fulfill our mission to enrich and inspire all in our community through music.

“Thank you so much for everything you did to make the performances at Mary Cariola Center so memorable and magical. I hope you could see how much you brightened the lives of both students and staff! We are lucky that Rochester is home to a worldclass orchestra that values making the arts accessible to all community members.”

Jen Trimble Ford - Music Therapist, Mary Cariola Center

“As you may know, our relationship with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra goes back decades. It's one of our most valued partnerships, with our Even Start children regularly attending "Tiny Tots" concerts. For most of these children, it is their first exposure to an orchestra, one that often leaves a lasting positive impression. We sincerely appreciate the continued efforts of the RPO in facilitating and emphasizing the importance of music education in children's lives.”

Pearl Tokar - Winslow Elementary

Primary/Intermediate

With COVID-19 still presenting health and safety concerns, the difficult decision was made to stream our Primary and Intermediate Concerts once again in 2022. Each concert was available on-demand to teachers for 30 days, available free for all who registered. A resource packet including lesson plans was also provided to all teachers. While we missed seeing the smiles of thousands of students filling Kodak Hall, streaming allowed the orchestra to have a broader reach than ever through the power of digital content. Across Primary and Intermediate streamed concerts, the RPO reached over 35,000 students from 15 counties across New York State.

Classroom Collaboration

While we couldn’t welcome students into Kodak Hall, that didn’t stop our musicians from making connections in classrooms across the region. These varied from assemblies at elementary schools, to conductor visits to high school bands and orchestras, to sectionals and masterclasses with college musicians. These engagements allowed RPO musicians, guest artists, and conductors to foster a personal connection and share their expertise and experiences with our region’s young artists. The RPO also welcomed a small number of student groups from area schools for full orchestra open rehearsals.

Care & Wellness Initiative

This season, the RPO received seed funds from the NEA and the Mellon Foundation to fund a pilot for a new accessibility initiative. With training from the Nazareth College Music Therapy Department in hand, RPO musicians worked with 17 partner organizations working with two populations: seniors with neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, and children/teens with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. Chamber ensembles, open rehearsals, and special musician interactions reached over 1,000 people who otherwise may not have had access to the RPO.

Around the Town

The Around the Town series began in 1991 with the mission of bringing the RPO and live orchestral music to every corner of our community. For these programs the orchestra steps outside of its home, Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, and goes into every corner of the community to give free performances at churches, synagogues, schools, and community centers, thereby providing wider access to live orchestral music. This year’s venues included Churchville-Chili HS, Fairport HS, and two City of Rochester R-Centers, which saw special side-by-side performances with the ROCmusic Collaborative.

City of Rochester & Monroe County

City of Rochester supported concerts in 2021-22 included an expanded City Parks series, Around the Town Side-by-Sides with ROCmusic, and two all-new events: the Parcel 5 ensemble festival and the Lilac Festival Side-by-Side. These Side-by-Sides were especially impactful this year after two years without them. At City R-Centers, audiences saw the RPO String Quartet perform the world premiere of ROCmusic violinist Isaiah Jonahkin’s composition “Corroded Beauty.” Meanwhile, the Lilac Festival concert featured a new collaboration with World of Inquiry School #58 & School of the Arts. Monroe County support allowed for two well-loved orchestra concerts at Ontario Beach Park and Frontier Field following a Rochester Red Wings game.
