APACHE MALL: A MUCH-CELEBRATED SHOPPING TRADITION Written by Maura Keller | Images provided by Apache Mall

For decades, a favorite past time of

many Americans has been visiting their favorite shopping mall. From gleaming store facades with inviting window displays to favorite eateries teeming with goodies to entertainment options aplenty, shopping malls have been a “draw” for people of all ages. In fact, in was back in 1956 that the country’s very first indoor shopping mall, Southdale in Edina, Minnesota, opened. And not long after that, Rochester’s beloved Apache Mall made its entrance into the retail marketplace on October 16, 1969 with 55 stores by then-owner MEPC. Nearly three decades later, Apache Mall was bought by 1998 by Growth Properties, with the current owner, Brookfield Properties purchasing Growth Properties in late 2018. Since 1969, Apache Mall has been and remains a staple in the greater Rochester community and southeastern Minnesota.

Newspaper advertisements from mid-October of 1969 promoting the grand opening of the Apache Mall and bus routes to get there.

“The original build of the mall was rather industrial in appearance with cement floors, little color and practically no light,” says Kim Bradley, general manager of Apache Mall. “Of course, in the years to follow, the concrete floors were replaced with tile, we improved the lighting with the addition of skylights and updated amenities throughout the center and food court.” Aside from the physical appearance improving throughout its more than 50-year history, Apache Mall’s retailer base has also evolved throughout the

years. Most recently, the mall has added retailers such as Scheels, H&M, Serenity Couture, JCP Beauty, lululemon, Sephora, Cotton on Kids, Orange Theory and SPARK Children’s Museum. “We’ve continued to evolve to bring in new uses that people want from their local shopping centers,” Bradley says. “We are most proud of the connection we foster with our community and how we are a tradition in their families.”

F Feature Indeed, for many Southeastern Minnesota families as well as visitors to the region, enjoying Apache Mall has become a favorite past time. But, as with most aspects of the retail environment, the “shopping mall” experience has evolved, as has the types of stores found within. Even before the pandemic, shopping malls faced a myriad of challenges, particularly due to the expansive nature of online shopping. So how has Apache Mall “faired” during this evolutionary time facing the retail industry?

I think we are seeing the evolution of malls, specifically how we can reinvent, reimagine and revitalize these spaces to evolve and create places for our communities to thrive. The mall food court around 1991 and present (below). “I think we are seeing the evolution of malls, specifically how we can reinvent, reimagine and revitalize these spaces to evolve and create places for our communities to thrive,” Bradley says. “Since the mall’s opening, we have always strived to find the right mix of stores, merchandise, services, and amenities that meets the needs of the community.” Today, 89 stores grace Apache Mall. From H&M to Barnes & Noble to Macy’s, there truly is something for everyone at this Rochester destination. Dining options range from full-service dining like Applebee’s, HuHot Mongolian Grill, and Red Lobster, to quick-serve choices such as Charley’s Philly Steaks and A&W All American Food in a food court that seats more than 500 customers. And while walking through malls can be a good opportunity for exercise, especially during the winter months, Brookfield Properties has made a concerted effort to envelope fitness and wellness opportunities within its properties. At Apache Mall, visitors will find Orangetheory Fitness, a one-hour ultimate workout concept that uses heart monitors to track clients’ heart rates.

Feature F The vibrant and colorful fitness center occupies a 3,500-square-foot space with its own exterior entrance. In addition, the Apache Mall offers mall walking during the colder winter months. To accommodate walkers, the mall interior opens one hour prior to stores opening. Of course, what would the holiday season be without shopping. Seen as a favorite shopping destination in Rochester, Apache Mall also has established a welcoming array of holiday experiences to further enhance the shopping experience. These experiences have become beloved traditions for many families in the area. “We look forward to the upcoming holiday season to continue with traditions of decorating the mall, the arrival of Santa, collection of toys under the Sharing Tree, the return of holiday stores like Go! Calendar and Polar X Ornaments and many local musical performances,” Bradley says. Once again, the mall will be closed Thanksgiving Day and will reopen for “Black Friday” at 8:00 a.m. for the Rochester community.

To provide ample time for shoppers to purchase gifts in-person, Apache Mall will extend operating hours beginning Friday, December 9 through Christmas Eve. Be sure to check out our website for upcoming holiday hours and events. Looking ahead, the Apache Mall team is excited for what the future holds for the mall and for the ever-evolving retail shopping experience. “It is important to us that our shopping community enjoys well-deserved time with loved ones,” Bradley says. “We look forward to an exciting year ahead with new brands coming to the center. We will share more details as we are able to.” To learn more about the Apache Mall, visit them online at www.apachemall.com.

MEET THE MEMBER: TYROL SKI & SPORTS Skiing may have started as a

funcational form to travel but nowadays it’s the leading winter sport and recreational activity. Here in Minnesnowta we know the importance of good outdoor gear so we can make the most out all seasons. Tyrol Ski & Sports has been the go-to place for just that! Owner, Kristin Welch, provided us with more information about this local familyowned specialty outdoor store. Q: Tell us about Tyrol Ski & Sports. What does your company offer to the Rochester region? A: Tyrol Ski & Sports is a family-owned specialty outdoor store, selling quality apparel and equipment in Rochester, MN. since 1965! In the winter months we feature ski and snowboard equipment, snowshoes, winter outerwear and boots. In the summer our focus is canoes and kayaks, camping gear, as well as

After 4 years in Tyrol Ski & Sports location on historic 3rd Street, they outgrew the space and have since been located off 2nd Street SW.

porch and patio furniture. We offer quality sportswear and footwear year around – for youth through adult. Customers say they like our large selection of product with the small shop feel.

The seasonsed Tyrol Ski & Sports team Q: How did it start for Tyrol Ski & Sports? A: Tyrol was started by Barb and Jerry Schliep in 1965. They opened in a small space on historic 3rd St in downtown Rochester. In 1969 Tyrol was moved to its current location on 2nd St SW, gradually increasing its retail space to it’s present 9,000 square feet. The business was sold to their daughter and son in-law (Kristin and Robb Welch) in 2003, who continue to run it.

Meet the Member M Q: What is a unique fact people should know about Tyrol Ski & Sports? A: Tyrol is unique because of its seasoned staff. The average length of time employed at Tyrol for our full-time staff is 25-30 years! We are able to provide firsthand experience with the products we sell. And that includes suggesting appropriate equipment / apparel for the customer’s activity as well as advice on how to maintain the gear. We’ve earned the trust of many of our long-time customers. Inside Tyrol Ski & Sports Store

Q: What is the outlook for your business and industry? A: The outlook for Tyrol is good. The pandemic brought many families into the store looking for good options to get kids outdoors. We especially saw this during the winter months. A lot of folks rediscovered their love for outdoor recreation and all the benefits for mind and body that it provides. The active lifestyle is definitely here to stay. We have a loyal customer base and they often say “Tyrol is my favorite store”. We never get tired of hearing that – it makes all the effort worth it! To learn more about Tyrol Ski & Sports, visit them online at www.tyrolskishop.com.

Q: Tyrol Ski & Sports became a member of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce in 1970. What do you find valuable in your membership to the organization? A: We have been a member of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce since 1970. We have participated in some of the Chamber sponsored marketing seminars, as well as found benefit by the guidance of the Chamber during the pandemic.

HIGHLIGHTING MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY FOR STUDENTS On Thursday, November 3 schools across southeast

Minnesota are helping their students to explore promising careers by giving them opportunities for up-close tours of local manufacturing companies and in-depth knowledge of skills-based careers. Students from the Hiawatha Valley Education District, Byron High School, and Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School will attend next week’s Construct Tomorrow and tour Crenlo Engineered Cabs and RCTC’s Heintz Center. According to Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), manufacturing companies in Minnesota are projected to add over 5,000 jobs in the next year, which is a steady 1.6% increase.

Additionally, in the past two years, manufacturing has experienced rapid growth, including a gain of 17,000 jobs from the second quarter of 2021 to the second quarter of 2022. Students who are able to tour manufacturing companies and learn about the careers are finding that the industry has high standards with safe, clean, and high-tech environments. It’s common for today’s manufacturing companies to hire employees for cutting-edge technologies utilizing robotics and automation.
