Government Entities Olmsted County is the eighth largest county in the state of Minnesota with eight cities (Rochester being the largest), 18 townships, and approximately 150,000 residents (2016 census data). The county is governed by seven individuals elected to serve on the Olmsted County Board of Commissioners, and county services are supported by nearly 1,300 Olmsted County government employees working to provide the foundation of a vibrant community. Rochester is the county seat of Olmsted county and is the third-largest city in Minnesota. The city has been frequently recognized by Money Magazine, since the 1980's as one of the best places to live in the United States ranging from the best overall to the best in the Midwest. The city of Rochester lies alongside the south fork of the Zumbro River and encompasses approximately 54 square mile area. The Parks & Recreation Department provides a variety of leisure time opportunities for people to enjoy. The City of Rochester has more than 3500 acres of park land and more than 85 miles of paved trails to explore. There are more than 100 individual park areas where one or more of the following can be found: 81 playground areas, 15 picnic shelters, 1 indoor/2 outdoor pools, a beach, 36 tennis courts, 34 horseshoe courts, 54 ball diamonds, 37 football/soccer fields, 15 basketball courts, 2 dog parks, 19 sand volleyball courts, 2 archery range, 2 frisbee golf courses, 2 garden plot sites, 3 groomed cross country ski trails, 9 outdoor hockey rinks and 6 indoor hockey rinks. Rochester Public Schools is a high performing public school district located in the middle of South-Eastern Minnesota and spans 218 square miles. There are 27 schools in the district; 17 Elementary Schools, 4 Middle Schools, 3 High Schools, and 1 Alternative Learning Center. There are over 18,100 students in the district, more than 80 spoken languages, and approximately 85% of our students graduate from high school in four-years.
