For the last decade, much attention has been paid to growing the education approach surrounding the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Referred to as “STEAM” education, these disciplinebased programs, from elementary through graduate studies, prepare students to solve complex problems and become well-equipped for the challenges of the modern world through hands-on, project-based learning opportunities. The Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce recently held its STEAM Summit, which encourages middle and high school students to pursue STEAM careers by “connecting them to business and higher educational institutions which offer STEAM courses in a highly interactive, hands-on format.” In addition to having over 3,000 students in attendance, over 100 businesses,

higher education institutions, and local government entities participate in this day-long event that motivates students to embrace the education and skills needed to keep Southeast Minnesota competitive. According to Dr. Jeffrey Boyd, the president of Rochester Community and Technical College, the STEAM Summit has a two-fold benefit for secondary and post-secondary educators. For junior high and high school teachers, the Summit is a valuable career exploration tool for students.

“Very rarely are so Very rarely are many career paths so many career paths represented in represented in one place – one place – let alone designed let alone designed for students for students to experience them hands-on. For post-secondary educators, the Summit provides an opportunity to showcase how they teach STEAM in the college setting and the technology they use in the classroom. “Also, many college students help out at the booths which provides an opportunity for future students to connect and network with our currently enrolled Yellowjackets,” Boyd says. Indeed, as Boyd further explains, the STEAM Summit gives students an opportunity to see real-world technology in action. Students have a chance to use virtual reality (VR), biomedical, engineering, and other technologies used daily by those who work in STEAM careers. They get a glimpse of careers in STEAM industries and connect with experts in their fields.

So many of the in-demand jobs in the market today require skills and training in STEM and STEAM and the U.S. is behind other nations in STEM education. A recent report Boyd read stated that we are falling behind in science research and patents.

"As our world and work becomes more advanced through computers, automation, and artificial intelligence, we need a capable future workforce that is familiar with the technology and understand how it shapes the work done in varies careers," says Mandy Satterfield, Career Awareness Specialist at Mayo Clinic. "The STEAM Summit highlights how STEAM touches every kind of work from technical careers to healthcare careers and all education levels high school diploma to advanced degrees." Dr. Kent Pekel is superintendent of schools in Rochester. For Pekel, the 2023 STEAM Summit was a fantastic experience for students from Rochester Public Schools (RPS).

As the saying goes, ‘If you can’t see you, you can’t be it.” The STEAM Fair enabled our students to see themselves in jobs they might otherwise never have considered.

“From medicine to construction, students were exposed to dozens of career pathway options many of which were probably unknown to them prior to attending the Summit,” Boyd says.

“We need to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers,” Boyd says. “Events like this highlight this need.” Mayo Clinic, who sponsored and had over 40 career fields

important stop on the pathways to postsecondary education and a career that they are paving in Rochester Public Schools today. “We look forward to building on this year’s success in the years to come,” Pekel says. Jaden Miller, Marketing Manager at Weller Brothers Landscaping concurred that STEAM Summit provided the opporuntity for thousands of students to learn more about career options that they may have been unaware of. "For example, landscape architecture is a career that encompasses all STEAM disciplines, but nearly all the students we engaged with at the Summit were hearing of this career for the first time. " Miller says. The Weller Brothers Landscaping team had a fun time introducing students to landscape architecture with an interactive, virtual reality experience at the STEAM Summit. Afterwards, they had a student reach out to coordinate a day of job shadowing with their landscape architect. GEOTEK, one of the sponsors of this year’s STEAM Summit, is an employer that recognizes the importance of identifying and cultivating talent early in the educational pipeline. According to Jacqueline Zimmerman, training program facilitator at GEOTEK, by actively participating in these events, GEOTEK can showcase the diverse and exciting opportunities within manufacturing, inspiring students to consider STEM and manufacturing careers. This early exposure helps build brand awareness and fosters a connection between students’ academic interests and potential future roles within GEOTEK.

SMITH SCHAFER

Meet the Member: Smith Schafer Each month, we learn from a Chamber member about their offerings, history, a unique fact, and their business outlook

10 | ROCHESTER AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE — DECEMBER 2023

SMITH SCHAFER

A thoughtful business advisor is invaluable! At Smith Schafer, a local accounting and consulting firm, they provide proactive solutions, deep expertise, and personal relationships, allowing business owners more time to work on growing their business. We spoke with the Kurt Lentz, Manager at Smith Schafer, to learn more.

Q: Tell us about Smith Schafer. What does your company offer to the Rochester region? A: Smith Schafer is a well-established CPA firm located in Rochester, Minnesota. With a strong local presence, our firm has been serving the Rochester region for over 50 years, and we take great pride in being an integral part of the local community. We offer expertise in various areas, including tax compliance and planning, audit and assurance services, outsourced accounting services, and business consulting. What sets us apart is our unique ability to combine the capabilities of a much larger firm with the personalized, client-centric approach typically associated with smaller practices. We believe in delivering large-firm results while maintaining the accessibility and one-on-one communication that our clients appreciate. This means that our clients can always count on us being just a phone call, email, or a short drive away, ready to offer the expert guidance they need. Q: How did it start for Smith Schafer? A: Our roots go back to 1971. Richard Smith co-founded the company in Rochester, MN. Within five years, Al Schafer joined the practice and the firm was renamed to Smith Schafer and Associates, not knowing that this six-person accounting firm would become one of the largest public accounting firms in Minnesota, with three locations and approximately 120 employees.

Meet the Member

We appreciate the Chamber's collective voice in representing our interests, the access to educational resources and market insights, and its commitment to strengthening the sense of community in Rochester, ultimately contributing to the prosperity of our city. Q: What is a unique fact people should know about Smith Schafer? A: We are a Top 200 CPA firm and the largest CPA firm that originated in Rochester! Q: What is the outlook for your business and industry? A: The outlook for Smith Schafer and the broader accounting and CPA industry is positive and promising. We are well-positioned to adapt to the evolving landscape and continue to thrive. We anticipate continued demand for financial expertise, driven by the need for sound financial advice, tax planning, and assurance services. The industry as a whole faces challenges because the number of retirees has greatly outweighed the number of accounting graduates in the past few years. By enhancing firm culture and adapting to changes in the workforce, we’ve been fortunate to stay ahead of these trends. The industry as a whole has also faced many law and accounting standards changes. In the face of regulatory changes, our expertise in navigating evolving tax laws and providing strategic business advisory services positions us to meet client needs effectively. Our commitment to maintaining a client-centric approach ensures that we will continue to build strong relationships and provide exceptional service. To learn more about Smith Schafer, visit www.smithschafer.com

Q: Smith Schafer has been a member of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce since 1970. What do you find valuable in your membership to the organization? A: The Rochester Area Chamber has played a major role in our growth as one of our founders, Al Schafer, was a member of the Chamber Ambassadors for over a decade! This longstanding affiliation has offered us the opportunity to establish vital connections with local businesses, potential clients, and community leaders through various networking events and meetings, fostering strong relationships within the Rochester region. Additionally, the Chamber's role in advocating for local businesses, providing essential resources, and promoting community engagement is invaluable.

Mayo Clinic Plans Approved to Transform Healthcare

The new buildings total approximately 2.4 million square feet of space infused with technology to improve care delivery. Structural and architectural components will allow for future expansion. Mayo Clinic’s Board of Trustees has approved Bold. Forward. Unbound. in Rochester, a multiyear strategic initiative that advances Mayo Clinic’s Bold. Forward. strategy to Cure, Connect and Transform healthcare for the benefit of patients everywhere. It reimagines Mayo Clinic’s downtown Rochester campus and introduces new facilities with a combination of innovative care concepts and digital technologies that will give Mayo Clinic the ability to scale transformation in ways never before imagined. Bold. Forward. Unbound. in Rochester will introduce five new buildings, related infrastructure and utilities — all with future-oriented design elements. The new buildings total approximately 2.4 million square feet of space infused with technology to improve care delivery. Structural and architectural components will allow for future expansion. Existing spaces will also be redesigned to support growing patient needs prior to the completion of new facilities.

Preparatory work is already underway with the City of Rochester, neighboring properties and the community, along with enabling work such as surveying and traffic studies across the Rochester campus. More significant construction will begin in early 2024. Plans are in place to ensure the Rochester community, Mayo Clinic staff and patients receive information well before changes occur, and every effort will be made to minimize disruption to day-to-day work. A multiyear construction timeline has the goal of opening some facilities as early as 2028, with the project expected to be completed by 2030. Read the full press release from Mayo Clinic at https://mayocl.in/3GwSFm9

The total investment of the project is $5 billion over six years.
