THE ANATOMY OF LED STRIP
LED strip lighting is often thought of as one broad subject, but strips can be quite varied, offering many features, lengths, and specifications. Nonetheless, they share a few key components that are helpful to be familiar with.
Circuit Board
The circuit board is a crucial component of your LED strip, embedding the LED chips and various other elements within it. This board not only provides a structure for the strip, but it is designed to be flexible for curved mounting. Its main function is to channel power from the LED power source, ensuring even distribution across the strip. The effectiveness of a circuit board extends beyond basic functionality; it can enable features such as colour options, dynamic light effects, and remote control. That’s why a well-designed circuit is essential!
LED Chips
At the heart of the strip are LED chips, available in two primary types: surface-mounted diode (SMD) or chip-on-board (COB), each providing unique lighting effects. These chips are securely attached to a flexible circuit board. SMD chips are individually soldered onto a circuit board in a line sequence. COB differs from this because the LED chips are directly affixed to the substrate, forming a single module. COB enables a high-density LED chip arrangement resulting in a seamless light effect.
Cutting Points
LED strips are equipped with specific cutting points to ensure they can be adjusted to fit different installation lengths, enabling customisation while maintaining their operational integrity. It's essential to cut at these designated points to avoid disrupting the circuit.

THE FIRST STEP TO A PICTURE-PERFECT INSTALLATION
Ready to dive in? Fundamental to choosing your LED strip is having a clear idea of what you want the end result to look like. Can you picture it? Having this clearly defined vision to refer to will make the next steps easier.
Need some inspiration to get started? Consider the following questions:
• Specifically, where will you be installing your LED strip?
• Is the location outdoors or indoors?
• Is there potential for water or dampness in this space?
• What kind of ambience are you aiming for? For example, should it be vibrant and crisp, or perhaps soft and atmospheric?
• Will the LED strip be visible or concealed?
• Is there a preference for a continuous stream of light effect?

Now that you have your ideal installation clearly defined, you can start the process of selecting your LED strip.
LIGHT EFFECT: Dotted or dotless
VEGAS VS VEGAS COB
At ROBUS, we offer twelve different types of LED strip, so you can find the perfect match for every project. These strips fall into three main categories: VEGAS, VEGAS COB, and ATLANTIC AC. To get you up to speed with LED strip, we will focus on VEGAS and VEGAS COB in this booklet (but jump to page 92 if you’re curious about ATLANTIC AC).
The primary distinction between VEGAS and VEGAS COB is that VEGAS COB provides a continuous stream of light effect, while VEGAS features a dotted pattern. Why would you pick one lighting effect over the other? Take a look at the table below to understand the different benefits of both LED strips.
Dotted light is suitable for concealed lighting fixtures, such as backlighting for a headboard, bar top, TV screen, table edge, mirror, etc.
Extrusions with a diffuser can be used to significantly reduce the dotted effect of surfacemounted diode (SMD) strip for visible fixtures.
Lower power options make this product economical to use. However, it is worth noting that lumens per watt are very similar across both of these LED strip types.
A very flexible lighting solution for most environments.
Aesthetically pleasing for lighting that will be on display. It is best used when shining onto a reflective surface, specifically when within 600mm of the surface.
No need to install extrusions to achieve a smooth light effect as chip-on-board (COB) technology involves multiple LED chips bonded directly to a substrate to form a single module. This creates the appearance of a seamless and uniform light panel.
Higher voltage options are available to accommodate the increased light density required to create the dotless effect.
The more flexible option for bends and angles as it holds less copper.
The key to deciding between these two options is understanding the location of the fitting and the preferred lighting effect. Once you make your choice, it is time to decide what colour lighting you require.

Choosing between RGB, RGBW and White-Only
One of the most appealing advantages of installing LED strip is the range of colour variations made possible by LED technology. RGB LEDs alone offer over 16 million possible colours, achieved by blending the primary colours of red, green, and blue – hence the name, RGB.
With access to all the colours of the rainbow (and more!), LED strips equipped with RGB capabilities can effortlessly transform a space to suit any occasion throughout the year or create a desired mood.
Prefer a minimalist white aesthetic?
While RGB LEDs can approximate a white hue, you'll need a dedicated white LED chip if you want a pure white tone. We offer multiple options to achieve this effect:

INGRESS PROTECTION: How exposed is your light fixture to the elements?
The different IP ratings required for wet and dry environments
To return to that picture-perfect vision you have of your completed installation, where exactly is it located? Outdoors or indoors? More specifically, how exposed is this location to water and dust?
As with all luminaires, different types of LED strip come with different ingress protection ratings (IP ratings) to suit the diverse applications for which the lighting may be used. This is because electrical goods can deteriorate or malfunction when water or dust enters the fixture.
Therefore, if the lighting is to be installed outdoors or in an area prone to water residue (such as a bathroom or bar), a higher-level IP rating is necessary. Consult the guide below to determine the IP rating required for your lighting installation.

IP20
The IP20 rating indicates that the luminaire is protected against objects with a diameter of up to 12.5mm, such as fingers or dust. However, it is not waterproof, making it unsuitable for outdoor use.
IP67
The IP67 rating indicates that the luminaire is protected against solid particles such as dust and sand, and that it has undergone testing to ensure it remains operational for a minimum of 30 minutes when submerged in water at depths ranging from 15cm to 1m.
EXTRUSIONS: One to match every application
What is an extrusion?
Extrusions are solid, semi-hollow, or hollow aluminium casings that can be equipped with high-quality diffusers and mounting accessories. LED extrusions, also known as profiles, primarily prevent damage and dissipate heat. Additionally, they can enhance lighting by providing streamlined effects. Exposed LED chips are vulnerable to accidental knocks and scuffs from everyday occurrences, and these lightweight extrusions act as an attractive protective shield.
What type of extrusion do you need?
Depending on where you plan to install your LED strip, you will require an extrusion that matches your specific conditions.
All our extrusions are available for IP20 LED strip. For IP67 LED strip, all extrusions are available except for Circular, Angled and Walkover extrusions which are exclusively available for CCT1 IP67 LED strip.
Surface Mounted
Designed for surface-mounted LED strip, these extrusions are available at different depths to seamlessly fit low-profile surfaces or provide extra depth for VEGAS strip to create an attractive dotless effect.

WATTAGE: What wattage and why?
It’s all down to LED density
Lower wattages are generally more suitable for accent and background lighting purposes, whereas higher output is preferred for functional lighting in areas such as offices and corridors. When it comes to LED strip, the more LEDs on a strip the more light output is produced.
Our VEGAS strip is an SMD, which stands for surface mounted diode. It consists of high-efficiency singular LED chips mounted onto a printed circuit board. The VEGAS strip LED density options range from a low 30LED/m, to a standard 60LED/m and a high 120LED/m.

Equally true is that the more LEDs on the strip, the more seamless the light distribution. Our VEGAS COB maximises this potential by using chip-on-board (COB) technology instead of SMD. COB LEDs are smaller in size and feature multiple LED chips directly mounted onto a substrate. This configuration enables a greater intensity of light emission and a more efficient utilisation of the available space.
This is why the VEGAS COB spans between 7 7W/m-14W/m while the VEGAS strip comes in a wider range of 4.8W/m - 19.2W/m. Our VEGAS strip has a variety of LED densities, allowing for a versatile selection of lighting effects.

DRIVER: How to choose your power supply
The type of driver you require will depend on the specific LED strip selected, the necessary length, the IP rating and the dimming capabilities required. It is important to choose the correct driver for your installation because if it has a lower voltage than your strip, there is a risk of fire.
Follow our step-by-step guide below to find out what driver you need for your project.
The first step to choosing your driver is to determine the voltage of the LED strip you require. Most LED strips available on the market run at 12VDC and are mainly for domestic use. Others are primarily 24VDC and used for commercial applications. As both voltages are under 120VDC, they are classified as separated extra low voltage (SELV).
Voltage is usually listed in the LED strip specifications sheet and on the packaging. If you don’t have access to these, another way to confirm this is to look at the LED strip PCB (printed circuit board). LED strips will have a mark indicating the voltage, as shown below:
Determine the power draw of the LED strip
When talking about the power draw of a product, we are referring to the power consumption, i.e. how many watts it takes to power the luminaire. Check the wattage specification of your LED strip.
This could be listed as either W/m or simply W. Typically, for an LED strip, you’ll be provided with the watts per metre.

Determine what driver you require for your installation
Now that you know the voltage and wattage, all you need to do is use the length required for your installation to determine what power driver you need. Let’s use an example to see how this works in practice:
Electrician Ed has completed his measurements and knows that he requires 10m of VEGAS LED strip for his kitchen installation.
To start, he checks the voltage and the wattage of his preferred LED strip and finds that it’s 12V and 4.8W/1m.
To determine what driver he needs, he multiplies the wattage by the length: 4.8W * 10 = 48W
Now he knows that he must pick a driver that can run at least 48W at 12V.
This isn’t Ed’s first installation, so knows that if the driver’s capacity is higher than the LED strip’s power draw, he can safely pair them together.
Just as Ed is about to get to work, his client announces that he’s going to build an extension onto his kitchen… Guess Ed is going to have to get back out his measuring tape!
Please note: You should never use a driver that has a smaller capacity than the max power of your LED strip as this will damage the strip.

Step Four Check if the driver matches the IP rating you require
Broadly speaking, our drivers are split by their IP ratings: IP20 or IP67. Before you jump to pick your power supply, make sure that the IP rating of the driver matches the IP rating of your LED strip! For ROBUS products, this will be marked on the driver.
Step Five Do you require dimmable functionality?
A dimmable driver serves a dual purpose: firstly, it functions as a driver by transforming the 230VAC mains input into a low-voltage DC output. Secondly, it dims the LEDs when used in conjunction with a dimming switch.

CONNECTOR: The easiest LED strip connection system
Poor connections can result in flickering lights or worse, no light at all. You will require different connectors based on several factors:
The size of the strip being connected
The IP rating of your LED strip
The direction your strip is going
Whether you are using a single colour or an RGB strip
The type of connection you need to make*
* For example, strip-to-strip will require a different connector than a stripto-driver connection.
Let’s delve deeper into some of these areas so you can choose your connectors with confidence.
What is the size of your LED strip?
Standard connector widths include 5mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm so ensure you select the appropriate width that matches your light strip when making straight or 90° connections.
What direction is your strip going?
LED strips are engineered to offer remarkable flexibility and allow for easy bending of up to 90°.
VEGAS COB is super flexible, but if you want your VEGAS LED strip to neatly wrap around corners you will probably need a connector.
For example, for VEGAS IP20 CCT1 there are connectors designed for this purpose, such as Left Connectors and Right Connectors. There are also T Connectors and X Connectors which are designed to change the angle of LED strip lights so you can create more outputs.
For instance, if you were using a T Connector you could create two outputs from one output.
Using the correct connector type gives you more flexibility to customise your design in small spaces, protects the LED strip from damage and ensures a secure connection for the best results.
What colour LED strip are you using?
Two-pin LED strip connectors are designed for singlecolour LED strips requiring a two-port connection - one for positive and one for negative. Four-pin connectors share the same size and shape as two-pin connectors but feature four pins that align with the connection points on the RGB LED strip.

For our long-run LED strip options in VEGAS and VEGAS COB, there is a maximum continuous strip length of 10m. There is also a maximum continuous strip length of 5m for our EXPRESS option. So, what do you do if you need to go further?
We recommend running your LED strip in parallel. This technique entails constructing separate runs of LED strip segments, all of which are directly connected to the power source.
PSU Max: 10m (12 & 24V)
The diagram illustrates that by wiring each LED strip section directly to the power source, the current required to pass through any individual section is reduced. This approach can greatly decrease the likelihood of experiencing a voltage drop.
