Attention all crafters, our major fund raiser is coming on April 20th with a combined Health Fair and Spring Boutique. Registration packets are now available, let me know if I can send you a packet. If you are not a crafter but would like to contribute baked goods for sale, please reach out to Sherida Ruiz. Sherida can be found at the receptionist’s desk on Thursdays mornings or call the desk at (714) 765-4510 and leave a message for her. If for no other reason, plan to come for the bake sale which is always a big hit with a large assortment of delicious treats.

Speaking of purchasing tickets, luncheon tickets in particular. It is becoming increasingly important that you purchase luncheon tickets in advance rather than at the door. Sue Baltazar and her team prepare food based on the number of tickets sold prior to the actual luncheon. But when we have twelve or more of you show up at the door wanting to buy tickets, it affects not only portion size, but the possibility of running short of food which is not fair to those who bought their ticket well in advance. Tickets for the following month are always available at the welcoming table, saving you a trip if you do not anticipate being at the center any time prior to the next luncheon.

We will celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day on Friday, March 8th. Time is 1 PM to 3 PM, purchase your ticket at the receptionist desk.

I am continually working on trips to fun and exciting places to visit. And of course our lunch and dinner outings will continue each month as promised, with casino trips every other month. The Congregate Meal Program serves nutritious meals to older adults in a group setting with an opportunity to socialize with others. The program also provides nutrition education, nutrition risk screening, and, in some areas, nutrition counseling. Voluntary contributions are welcome, but not required. Suggested donation: age 60 plus $3.00, and under age 60 $5.00.

The Congregate Meal program is available at Brookhurst Community Center, 2271 W. Crescent Avenue, Anaheim, CA 92801. The program is offered from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. Transportation is available. Entertainment is available most Thursdays. Please call 714-765-4511 for more information.

Scams Against Seniors

Older adults are often the target of scams. Scammers are savvy and convincing, and their scams are designed to catch people off guard. Don’t be ashamed if you think you or someone you know has been a victim of a scam — it can happen to anyone.

Common scams aimed at older adults include: Government impersonator scams, such as someone posing as a Medicarer representative asking for account information Fake prize, sweepstakes, and lottery scams, in which you are asked to pay money or provide account information to claim winnings Computer tech support scams, in which a scammer tells you that your computer has a problem and wants you to pay for support services to fix it “Enough of this. Let’s go shred a sofa.”

The grandparent scam, in which a caller pretends to be a grandchild or other relative in distress

A couple in their 80's were having problems remembering things, so they decided to the go the doctor for a checkup. The doctor tells them that they are physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. His wife asks, "Where are you going?" "To the kitchen for a drink," he replies. She asks, " Will you get me piece of cake?" The husband says, "Sure." She gently reminds him, "Don't you think you should write it down so you don't forget it?" He says, "No, I can certainly remember that!"

Then the woman says, "Well, I'd like some strawberries on top. You'd better write it down because I know you'll forget it." The man replies, "I can remember that! You want some cake with strawberries."

She adds, "I'd also like whipped cream on top. Now I'm certain you're gonna forget that, so you'd better write it down ok." Irritated, he says, "I don't need to write it down woman! I can remember that! Cake with strawberries! And whipped cream!"

He then grumbles into the kitchen. After about 30 minutes the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment and says, "Where's my toast?

Health Myths 1. The older you get, the less sleep you need.

We might wish this were the case, but older adults still need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Adequate sleep can help reduce your risk of falls, improve your overall mental well-being, and help reduce your risk for certain health conditions.

2. Depression is normal in older adults.

Although depression is a common mood disorder, it is not a normal part of aging. Talk with your doctor if you begin showing signs of depression, such as irritability or decreased energy.

3. Older adults can’t learn new things.

Not true! Older adults can still learn new things, create new memories, and improve their performance on a variety of skills.

4. Memory problems always mean Alzheimer’s disease.

Not all memory problems are a sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Talk with your doctor to determine whether the memory changes you’re noticing are normal or whether they may be a sign of something more serious.

5. Older adults do not need to exercise.

Older adults have a lot to gain by being active — and a lot to lose by sitting too much. Exercise and physical activity can help manage some chronic conditions, improve mental and physical health, and maintain independence as you age.

Stories About Being a Female Publisher

By Leah S. Dunaief We started the first newspaper, The Village Times, on April 8, 1976. After some wildly chaotic and exciting first months, just before Christmas, I was waiting in line at the deli across from the office when I was greeted by the ad director of a local competitor newspaper. We had met several times before, and he was filled with the good cheer of the season.

“Congratulations on your new venture,” he said. “The paper looks very good every week.”

“Thank you,” I replied, thinking it was a generous thing for him to say to another publisher.

“You tell the fellow up there that he’s doing a great job,” he added, pointing upward to my office building on the hill.

“What fellow?” I asked, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ crossing my mind.“ Aw, c’mon,” he said with a laugh. “We all know you have some guy up there running the show.”“ Merry Christmas,” I replied and took the encounter back to the staff of half a dozen wives and mothers, who howled.

Then there was the time I was seated on the dais next to the New York Press Association’s keynote speaker, Mike Wallace. It was the Spring Convention, 1984. On his other side was the association’s president finishing his meal, and I was the president-elect. Wallace, good journalist that he was, chatted with us throughout the dinner, sincerely asking about the names and locations of our newspapers. After it was my turn, and I answered his queries, he looked at me and asked, “And where is your husband?”

I could hear the president choking on his food as he feared my response. “He’s at home watching the children,” I answered with a smile. At this point, the president was able to get out, “No, she is the owner and publisher of her paper.”

Wallace turned back to me, patted my arm, and after a long pause, offered, “Forgive me, my dear. I’m an old dinosaur.”

911, WOMAN’S HISTORY MONTH

You Need to Call 911!

I’m the charge nurse in a huge emergency room.

It’s a holiday, and we are very busy. The secretary comes up to me and says there’s a phone call from somebody who just got discharged. The caller is yelling about 911 saying and they have a major emergency. I drop what I’m doing and take the call.

Patient: “You need to call 911! Call them right now!”

Me: “What’s going on? What’s the emergency?”

Patient: “I just spent all day in your ER. I had such a bad headache, and they had to give me medicine in an IV.” Me: “Okay. What’s happening now?”

Patient: “The medicine made me so drowsy, and they told me not to drive home, so I called a taxi.

They dropped me off at my house.”

Me: “Fine, but why are you talking about 911? If you need an ambulance—” The caller interrupts and talks over me.

Patient: “Not an ambulance! You need to call 911!

Call the police! They were here, and they took my money. You need to tell them to give it back.”

Me: “… What? You’re telling me the police stole your money.”

Patient: “The taxi driver called them. I told him I wasn’t paying. I came from the hospital, so it should be free. He called the police, and they came to my house, and they said I had to pay for the fare.”

Me: “Who told you the cab ride would be free?”

Patient: “Call the police! Call the cab company!

Tell them the ride is free! Give my money back!”

Me: “Miss, I’m not in charge of the cab company.

I’m certainly not in charge of the police. And I don’t even have your money.”

The patient yells an insult down the phone.

Patient: “If you don’t give my money back right now, I’m coming back there, and people are going to get hurt.”

Me: “Oh, you just said the magic words. I’ll call the police for you right now. What’s your address?”

The patient gave me her name and address. I hung up, called 911, and reported that she had made threats against the hospital.

About an hour later, the patient wound up back in my ER, this time in handcuffs. Apparently, when the police got to her house, she took a swing at a cop. They brought her to us to get the taser darts removed.

Woman’s History Month

Jeannette Rankin Women’s Rights Advocate “I want to be remembered as the only woman who ever voted to give women the right to vote.” — Jeannette Rankin Jeannette Pickering Rankin (June 11, 1880 – May 18, 1973) was an American politician and women's rights advocate who became the first woman to hold federal office in the United States She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from Montana in 1916 for one term, then was elected again in 1940. Rankin remains the only woman ever elected to Congress from Montana.

Each of Rankin's congressional terms coincided with the initiation of U.S. military intervention in one of the two world wars.

A lifelong pacifist, she was one of 50 House members who opposed the declaration of war on Germany in 1917.

In 1941, she was the sole member of Cong ress t o v ot e a g a i nst t he declaration of war on Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

A suffragist during the Progressive Era, Rankin organized and lobbied for legislation enfranchising women in several states, including Montana, New York, and North Dakota.

While in Congress, she introduced legislation that eventually became the 19th Constitutional Amendment, granting unrestricted voting rights to women nationwide. She championed a multitude of diverse women's rights and civil rights causes throughout a career that spanned more than six decades.
