Welcome to the fiftieth issue of Valley Life and we hope you are continuing to enjoy the offering of news and views from around the Cheddar Valley.

Well some people said we were mad to try to launch a magazine for the Cheddar Valley back in 2016.

It was thought that the print industry was dead in the water.

demic has taken hold of our lives there was never a better time to be at the heart of a community.

We’ve seen how the community has rallied around one another and that is something for which we can all be proud.

This is not over yet, but with the sense of community which we’ve seen over the past year, we are in a great position to come out the other side a stronger and healthier community.

And Valley Life is determined to be here to be a part of that continuing story in the Cheddar Valley. So, here’s to the next 50 issues of Valley Life.

Lions step up to give those in need a hand

C

heddar Vale Lions has been at the forefront of providing laptops to children needing devices to continue their school work.

Wyvern Coffee, a local company in Cheddar Gorge, ran a raffle to raise extra money for our project and collected £330 for us.

Another local community café, Lenny’s, also donated another £250 to support the scheme.

The project is set up to help local schools and families by providing IT items to those children that need the devices for their home schooling.

Sylvia added: “Our local community has definitely united behind us after seeing Lions on our social media page distributing laptops to Cheddar First School and Fairlands School, plus students at the Kings of Wessex School and Hugh Sexeys.

When the project was launched on social media during the first week in January, it created a lot of interest.

Sylvia Cook from the Lions said: “Offers of items came in steadily at first and several families immediately requested devices to help them with the home schooling.

“The week we launched, an ex-Lion and an IT Technician, came forward and offered to set up the process of data-wiping and resetting the devices to software that runs on Chromebooks (A stipulation of the Wessex Learning Trust).

“We then contacted the local Men’s Shed, with whom we have a good working relationship, as we knew they had a member certified to PAT test all the items to ensure their electrical safety.

“They kindly offered their

services to us and our production line was set.”

The Lions joined the BBC “Make a Difference” initiative with those in need of devices were able to contact the Lions directly.

Sylvia added: “When this went live, we received many donations of equipment and also lots of publicity, including an interview on BBC Radio Somerset.

“Working together in partnership has been fantastic and we have managed to log and test 125 items.”

“We are still receiving requests and fulfilling them.

“This has been one of the largest projects we have run for some time, so worthwhile, rewarding and sometimes emotional when we see the families that are struggling.

“I will finish with a quote from Tom at Wyvern Coffee, who backed us from the beginning.

“He said ‘The kids are our future and we need to do everything in our power to make sure that future stays bright.’

“That’s the essence of Lions serving their community.”

Tackling the speeders

S

peeding has been an on-going issue in the village for many years and we have recently agreed the introduction of a 20mph limit through the lower gorge where speeding vehicles present a particular danger.

In addition, the Parish Council is looking to purchase a flashing Speed Indicator Device (SID) which can be moved from site to site to record vehicle speeds around the village.

We’re working hard at the Riverside to ensure that we can offer you the very best post-lockdown pub experience

Using existing data from speeding traffic and reports from parishioners the Community Speedwatch Team have identified poles that would be viable to hold the SID. Once Somerset County Highways have approved these details we will need to recruit and train volunteers to operate the system.

• Construction of the community pavilion at Sharpham Road playing fields is continuing well and, with the roof virtually finished now, the building is really taking shape.

Completion is scheduled for the spring, so the facilities should be available to hire as soon as government restrictions allow. It is really heartening to see this build4

ing grow and we cannot wait for it to be a functioning and useful community resource.

• Dogs are bringing much needed owner pleasure and company during the difficult time we are facing. However it is the owner’s responsibility to clear up any mess made by their canine friend.

There have been many complaints to the office about dog poo left in Hannah More Park, Sharpham Road and the footpaths and pavements around the village. This is particularly unpleasant and dangerous for children. If your dog is being exercised off the lead please watch where it goes so you can dispose of any mess in a bag which is put either in a litter bin or dog poo bin. And to

the majority of you who do this, a big thank you.

• Also our appreciation goes to people of all ages who are doing their bit to help reduce the litter problem in Cheddar.

Families and individuals have been spotted in various parts of the village and Gorge with litter grabbers, gloves and bags to pick up rubbish, some of which can be recycled. Many other areas of the country, and especially beaches, are encouraging a ‘2 minute litter pick’ which can be carried out by anyone in Cheddar, but only if you have some protective gloves to use.

The Parish Council have invested in a great number of bins for the village and we are delighted to see them being used.

Help is only a call away

I

t’s now more than a year since we first heard about this worrying virus spreading around the world, and nearly a year since the Corona Cheddar Valley Group was established, writes Simon Childs.

In that time, our amazing call handlers have logged over 1000 requests for help! And it perhaps won’t come as a great surprise that January was the busiest month for the hotline since last May. Also, the payment system that was set up last April to minimise contact between people

who are unwell, isolating or vulnerable and the fantastic volunteers has now processed more than 550 transactions totalling over £16,000!

However, the true number of acts of help and kindness is many times greater than the number we’ve logged, as many of the fantastic volunteers and people in need who were introduced to each other by the group nearly a year ago have formed friendships and have continued to interact directly ever since.

Some of the truly brilliant volunteers have shopped and run

errands for the same person in need weekly since last March.

Having peaked at the new year, both locally and nationally, infection rates are thankfully falling and the vaccine programme has made astonishing progress! Nevertheless, caution will be required for some time to come and people will be isolating and shielding for the foreseeable futur.

Can you help the amorous frogs?

F

roglife are looking for volunteers who are needed to join Winscombe toad patrol to help carry toads and frogs over busy roads as they make their way back to the ponds in which they were born for the mating and breeding season.

Common Toad populations have declined by 68% in the last 30 years and their deaths are due to the increase of traffic, high kerbs and drains, and building development over the paths they’ve used for generations and sometimes their breeding ponds.

ildlife in the UK is in serious decline. However, the good news is that we can all help to make an important difference and have fun at the same time.

Our gardens and public spaces can provide a valuable home for wildlife and many people have already discovered the pleasures of wildlife gardening.

Wild Cheddar is a project initiated by Cheddar Community Partnership and aims to: • Inspire people to get involved and create places for wildlife in their gardens.

• Connect people.

• Share information.

• Celebrate the wildlife places that people create.

• Encourage management of public land to provide a place

for nature.

Wild Cheddar organiser Mel Clinton, said: “The project is also about adding to Cheddar’s sense of community, by bringing people together to help make a difference, doing something enjoyable and fulfilling.

“A Wild Cheddar Group has been set up at Next Door simply visit nextdoor.co.uk and search for “Wild Cheddar” - everyone is welcome to join and post their stories, information, questions and pictures. Wild Cheddar is grateful to Cheddar Parish Council for agreeing to support the project in-principle and discussions are also being held with Somerset Wildlife Trust on how they might be able to help. Axbridge Pageant to go ahead next year

T

he Pageant will go ahead next year as planned. That was the decision made by the Axbridge Pageant Committee in January, when a Zoom meeting was held to discuss the situation in light of the on-going Covid-19 crisis.

There is one important caveat, of course, that the event will only proceed as long as the vaccination programme, being rolled out over the Spring and Summer, is a complete success.

The Artistic Director of the Pageant John Bailey said: “We are cautiously optimistic that the 2022 Pageant will be able to take place as long as life looks to be returning to normal, more or less, by August of this year.

“If it does then we can begin to plan meaningfully ahead, ramping up preparations for ticket sales, casting, costuming, construction, promotion and fund raising.”

Ticket sales are crucial for the event’s success as without the income generated in advance there can be no pageant.

Traditionally tickets are on sale before Christmas – hence the need to have confirmation of the Pageant taking place by the autumn.

Saxon, Georgian and Victorian personas… and show how life here would have been led all those years ago. It’s not just a tapestry, but a dynamic reliving of history, full of sound and action.

“And it doesn’t happen by accident, but through a huge amount of dedication and resolve.”

o-one could accuse Cheddar estate agent Nick Puddy of being pessimistic.

fter a tough year this is the perfect time to look towards a better 12 months.

• Get your head right Make sure your computer screen is high enough so you don’t have to nod your chin and the screen is directly in front of you. Put your monitor/laptop on some books or use a stand to keep your screens at a level that is aligned with your head and eyes. This will allow your head to sit comfortably with less strain – and your neck will thank you for it.

For most of us, our health has been impacted in many ways beyond viral infection- big changes in daily stress levels, physical activity patterns, diet and family life. If you have found some of these things take a toll on your health and energy levels, here are some hints and tips to nudge you back to better health in 2021.

• A happy spine, neck and pelvis are central to the health of your nervous system. They must be well aligned to eliminate aches and pains as well as help your body cope with increased stresses and strains.

• Periods of high stress, prolonged sitting and lack of exercise compresses our frame and distorts our posture, leading to aches and pains as well as lower energy levels. These lifestyle factors cause the spinal joints to become misaligned or ‘wonky’, irritating surrounding the nerves and muscles, further worsening the problem. The solution to this is twofoldget checked and adjusted

by a chiropractor regularly; and make a commitment to support your health with the choices you make daily.

• Staying connected to people we love and receiving their care in return can be an essential part of maintaining your health and wellbeing during these trying times.

• Making time for regular zoom chats or socially distanced coffees or walks in the park can become a part of your healthy weekly habit.

For those working from home or spending extended hours by computers and screens, here are my top tips:

• Set your foundations Sit near the front of your chair and have it at a height so your knees are lower than your hips with both feet flat on the floor. This will ensure your lower back keeps you upright and slouching becomes difficult.

• Motion is lotion Shuffle in your seat periodically and make sure you get up and move around every 30 minutes- this keeps the spine limber and your body and attention span will thank you for it. In addition, be sure to schedule exercise into your day – morning or lunchtime works best before the demands of the day mount up.

The importance of drinking water

W

e all know how important water is right? It makes up over 70% of our body.

mild dehydration — headache, fatigue, light-headedness, and difficulty concentrating — can resemble symptoms of hunger.

But did you know that not enough water can cause symptoms that look like menopause symptoms such as joint aches and pains, itchy skin, memory loss and that kind of fuzzy heaviness.

• At the onset of hot flash drink cool water.

• Since most hot flashes occur at night it is a good idea to keep a jug of water by the bed.

It can also cause headaches constipation, bloating, fatigue and cause night-time palpitations which can wake you up.

So, making sure you get enough water during the day is even more important at this time of our lives drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day can reduce the risk of symptoms. My top 10 water tips are: • Don’t drink really cold water as this can disrupt your digestion. Best to have at room temperature or warm.

• Aim to drink 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day.

• Start the day with a glass of water as soon as you get up.

• Also splashing the face with cool water can alleviate discomfort.

Have it warm and add a drop of lemon to help kick start your metabolism.

• Drinking little and often is much better for you than gulping down a big glass of water all at once.

• Have a water bottle with you. Use a glass or metal one if you are adding oils. Try a few drops of smart and sassy oil in your bottle.

• When you feel like a snack, try drinking a glass of water first. Some symptoms of

Seeing life differently with visually-impaired Tiggi Trethowan

Walking into spring

T

he start of this walk is situated on a wide, level road, where the ground drops away each side - and there is a bonus of plenty of parking.

follow this pretty winding path through the trees. There is a boggy area and stream, just before you leave the wood, where beautiful yellow kingcups grow in the Spring.

You may also be lucky enough, like me, to hear the cuckoo calling in this area.

There are several walks starting from this area, but I am describing below a circular route which takes about 50 minutes, depending how long you spend at the pond!

Go through the kissing gate, near to an information board, and walk straight ahead across the rough grass to a second kissing gate. You will see an old mine shaft up on the right, which has been covered and fenced off, but you can peer down and see ferns growing around the edge.

Carry on along the narrow path and then turn right at the junction. Follow the track up to a gate, which will take you into Ubley Warren Nature Reserve. Keep to the left and follow the fence along to a gate on the far side.

If you look back from here, you will see tiny St Hugh’s Church through a gap in the trees. Walk across the field and go through a kissing gate

A bit further on you will arrive at Blackmoor Reserve pond. This is a very peaceful spot and there is a convenient stone block on which to sit and watch the coots, ducks and sometimes a heron busy fishing. Then walk on up the grassy path, which passes the old lead workings, and turn right at the top. Follow this stony track until eventually you will arrive at a car parking area and information board, which will tell you all about the area’s history.

Tiggi’s Travels A tricky start to 2021

I

t’s great to be back. I was beginning to worry my keyboard might have frozen over in lockdown but technology is a wonderful thing.

They set me up with both screen readers and voice to text. So, a voice reads documents and I can speak to type. I prefer to use a touch type keyboard and then have my work read back to me.

I have only learnt the basics so far but life changing nonetheless. Never be nervous if a blind friend or colleague asks you to text them. There is nothing a blind person can’t do!

My friend and Editor Rob spent many hours sharing screens and gently showing me how to use a virtual recording system. I cannot believe a self-confessed technical Luddite, now gone blind, I could achieve what I have. But I couldn’t have got there without support. Its OK to ask for help sometimes.

Folks always ask how I type and read documents with severe visual impairment.

Going blind is never good but I’m lucky to live in an ever-advancing technical world. A while ago I had tuition from the technical support team from the RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind).

As you know I was hoping to be in Cornwall over January but for obvious reasons I couldn’t get there. I have been focusing my frustration towards more technical learning.

This has been prompted by the temporary stalling of my Podcast series Draycott Diaries. A series based on life stories from my community.

How was I to record when

For those of you following Draycott Diaries Podcast series you are in for a treat.

Coming up on March 14 Margie Cooper, celebrity presenter of both BBC programmes “The Antiques Roadshow” and “Antiques Road Trip” will be talking to me.

Margi and I have worked on the show for over ten years, so expect some tales from “behind the scenes”. I hope along the way she can give us all some tips on investment Antiques and what we might look out for in Somerset. It will also reflect on the ups and downs of working on a program that has become a national treasure.
