Developers point to the fact that the size of the development has been reduced from its original 80 homes to 53 as them listening to local concerns.

Anger over Axbridge new homes proposal

T

here was barely concealed anger over Sedgemoor District Council’s decision to give planning permission to build 53 new homes in Axbridge.

Despite nearly four years of opposition to the proposal

by Hannick Homes to build on land off Houlgate Way, Sedgemoor councillors voted 10-2 in favour of the plan.

Axbridge Town Council had opposed the plans citing the excessive size of the development, lack of consultation with locals and the town council and the proximity of the homes to the poultry farm.

Axbridge Town Councillor, Barbara Wells said the proposal had led to 270 objections over the past 40 months.

She added: “I trust all members of the committee are familiar with the detailed submissions and find the numerous and varied delays to the decision-making process acceptable. It has been a source of considerable frustration to the residents of our town.

“Axbridge is a designated Tier 2 community under the Sedgemoor Local Plan with a responsibility to accommodate a minimum of 74 new houses by 2032.

“Axbridge Town Council is supportive of this and is particularly pleased that a development in Cheddar Road, Axbridge for the provision of 20 affordable homes has been agreed and is progressing.

“By agreeing to this development in Houlgate Way it will, in one hit, almost entirely meet the next 12 years’ need but at what cost?

“There will be no opportunity to integrate and assimilate new comers on a piecemeal basis.

Pressure on schools, roads and other infrastructure such as sewage and drainage, we have one bus service in Axbridge that is constantly under threat from the bus company. The site itself will present a large block

of new development when smaller varied developments would be more in keeping with Axbridge.

“The Town has no confidence in Hannick Homes who have not responded to requests for meetings to discuss the concerns of town residents.

“Two good examples of Hannick Homes unwillingness to engage centre around their plans to simply remove a memorial garden to one of Axbridge’s long term benefactors and their complete disregard of parking issues. The offer of a public car park accessed seemingly via the estate to balance the loss of at least 18 on road parking spaces in Houlgate Way will not help.”

Cox’s Mill demolition is put back to the autumn

P

lans to knock down a derelict hotel to make way for a hydro-electric power system have been delayed until the autumn.

Longleat Estates, which owns the Cheddar Gorge site, says complications with the demolition process means their proposed timescale has had to be put back.

A spokesman said: “Due to the complexity of dismantling the building at Cox’s Mill, as a result of its proximity to the watercourse and reservoir, as well as ecological sensitivities during the latter months of the year, it has been decided to postpone this work until 2020.”

The plans to revamp the site which was described as an eyesore and becoming increasingly unsafe were showcased to villagers last summer.

Simon Townsend, Cheddar Gorge and Caves’ operations manager, said the hotel is ‘beyond economical repair’ and demolition is the only answer.

But Longleat’s discussions with key stakeholders, including Bristol Water and the Environmental Agency, have seen the plans be pushed back by 12 months.

The company spokesman said: “While this unfortunate delay

has had a slight effect on the planning process, Longleat Enterprises plans to proceed with the next available opportunity for major works to be carried out.

“The estate, along with all stakeholders, is committed to this project, which will see the building removed and the area re-developed.

“However, we are all in agreement that any work undertaken must not be at the expense of the natural environment, which includes the important

water source and local bat populations.

“The temporary delay will allow more time for further consultation and also provide additional scope to plan and prepare for the demolition process in order to minimise any disruption.

“The next available opportunity for major works to be carried out without adversely affecting the environment, local community and visitors to the gorge is autumn 2020.”

Home grown success for Rotamec’s policy

Community spirit fund

A

fter a successful £12,000 fund-raising appeal, the Axbridge-Cheddar Cycle Walkway has been officially opened.

The section from Five Ways Bridge to Travis Perkins has been transformed from a muddy, pot-holed obstacle course to a smooth cycle and walk way to be enjoyed by those using the Strawberry Line.

More than 50 tons of vegetation, mud and rubble was cleared from the section to complete the Axbridge-Cheddar Cycle Walkway’s 2020 vision.

Following a monumental fundraising effort the charity raised £12,000 to pay for the work to remove vegetation, scrape away tons of mud and relay the path with a new hard wearing surface.

David Parkin of the ACCW said: “We’ve achieved the 2020 vision for the Axbridge-Cheddar Cycle Walkway – to get the narrow section resurfaced and free from muddy puddles.

“Thanks to a big push from Landscapes West before Christmas, over 50 tons of mud and vegetation was scraped off before laying a good depth of base and finishing stone.

Bristol Water have promised to keep their side of the fence clear of vegetation.”

Pageant fever grows

he Axbridge Pageant 2020 fever continues to gather pace with a call out for more participants to the decennial event.

Performers have already started coming forward to take part in the event over the August Bank Holiday, August 29-31 – but more volunteers are welcome.

A publicity photoshoot was organised in January to raise the profile of the event as well as interview with an academic who has been researching the history of pageants up and down the country.

Producer John Kendall said: “We’ve had a really good response from people in the town but there are still plenty of places to be filled – both on and off the stage.

“We hope a recruitment drive at the end of January will bring forward even more volunteers to what we are sure will be a memorable event over the August Bank Holiday.”

Take in the hill views

A

s my walks usually involve hills, this one is completely level without a hill in sight - only in the distance!

Then cross over and walk up the pavement to the right.

Nearly at the top, next to the Cheddar Road sign, cross over to the right and walk along the pavement to the entrance to the Strawberry Line.

So, this walk is roughly a circular one close to the reservoir.

At the end of Sharpham Road, park in the playing fields’ car park to the right of the reservoir entrance.

As you proceed along this smooth, level path you will once again cross over the Old River Axe flowing below (see photo).

Then walk down Middle Moor Lane, which starts on the opposite side of the gateway.

A bit further down there are benches where you can sit and look across the field to the Yacht Club and out over the reservoir. Carry on along the Strawberry Line until you arrive at turnings on the left and right.

You will pass quite a few fields and animals on the way, with the high bank of the reservoir sloping up to your right.

When the lane widens out into a parking area carry on round to the left and then immediately turn right through a gate into the field.

Follow the footpath across the field beside the fence. When you reach a gate in the hedge on the left, go through and turn right down Portmeade Drove.

Walk along past several smallholdings and, when the lane bends to the left, go through a gate on the right next to an old stone building. Walk across 14

the field beside the hedge to another gate above the Old River Axe, then follow the path to the right past the waterworks’ buildings.

At the end of the field go through the gate and walk straight ahead along the track through the trees, where you will come out next to the second reservoir entrance. Turn left and walk down the wide, grassy verge to the end of the road.

Immediately afterwards turn right into the playing fields and head across to the row of trees growing down the centre.

Keep to the left-hand side of the trees and continue across the field, passing several sports buildings on the left and a children’s play area on the right.

Then walk along the road to the end of the car park where you set out earlier.

he menopause is a natural transition in life which happens when a woman’s menstrual cycle comes to an end and levels of oestrogen and progesterone hormones decline.

Some women sail through the menopause whilst others struggle with a range of symptoms, including hot flushes, mood swings, fatigue, urinary issues, anxiety, acne and brain-fog.

Menopause isn’t purely a “womens problem” since the family, friends and work colleagues of a menopausal woman may all be affected by the impact it is having on her.

Oestrogen has many functions and is not just related to fertility and reproduction. It lifts your mood, so the decline can trigger depression in some women. It also supports strong bones so women are more likely to develop osteoporosis after menopause.

Symptoms can be reduced if digestive systems and detoxification functions are in tip-top condition. Good digestion ensures optimal availability of nutrients from your food. The liver has a key role in detoxifi-

Avoid sugary snacks – nuts, oatcakes or veggie sticks with hummus are better options.

Foods which mimic the oestrogen have also been found to reduce menopause symptoms. These include flaxseeds, almonds, apples, olive oil, oats, lentils, bean sprouts and soy products (soybeans, tofu, miso). So a breakfast of porridge with stewed apple and ground flaxseed would be a great start to the day.

Other important foods are ones which raise levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, such as flaxseeds, oily fish and beans as HDL is lowered when oestrogen levels fall.

Calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K2 and protein are vital for maintaining bone health.

Leafy green vegetables are high in calcium as are beans, almonds and oranges. Weight bearing exercise also supports maintenance of bone density as we age.

Antioxidents will generally improve mood and wellbeing so stock up on vegetables, salad, fruit, herbs, seeds and fish too.

good garden design includes elements which are in proportion to the size of the property and which blend in with your property’s building material and architectural style.

Repeating elements such as plants and shapes of plants and colours throughout the garden will create a united theme.

Plant of the month: Viburnum tinus has got to be the best plant this month, however it is a great plant most of the year as it’s easy to grow, happy in semi shade or sun, the evergreen plant is covered in flowers to cheer you up from December to April.

While designing your garden, create a more appealing space by thinking about how to keep the eye moving.

Do this by incorporating a curious way to guide people through your garden. You can direct peoples gaze via curves that can’t be seen around until you get there or by more simple methods such as gradual changes in height or colour, intriguing focal points such as sculpture which entice, or even by seating areas.

Once you’ve mastered the above, try using these tricks such as, tempt the nose by adding plants with fragrance that can’t be seen. By sound;

trickling water, a wind chime or grasses which rustle in the wind will tantalise the ears.

This plant can be left to grow to 3m x 3m or trimmed after flowering to form a neat shrub in the flower border or in a pot or plant as a hedge.

This transition or discovery through the space can also be used to create the illusion of a larger space.

I

recently read an article that compared our hair to “grass”. We keep it hydrated to stop it from drying out, keep it regularly cut to maintain its shape.........and everyone else’s looks better!

If your hair is curly you’ve probably spent a small fortune on blow-outs and frizz-free products and when straight you’ve got the graveyard of curling devices and every roller ever invented at the back of a drawer.

When your hair is short you spend months growing it out, and when long NOTHING is more appealing than cutting the whole lot off!

In a nutshell - we’re never happy with our hair!

The look of the moment is all about texture and movement and when I look for inspiration for my guests there are many occasions that I think a few perm curlers here would make such a difference.

Forget the hair-raising disasters of the 1980s - because the “New (not like your granny’s)

Mark Two Perm” is a much softer, more believable curl.

Varying sized, randomly placed rods, bendy rollers or even braids can be used to create different texture whereas before, all the rods would be wound in uniform, in the same size which made it look an obvious perm.

Still not convinced? Technology has come a long way since the 1980s and while the solutions haven’t changed that much our knowledge of hair

is much more advanced and provided the hair is in good condition almost all hair types can be permed.

But it’s important to keep in mind that not all stylists today do perms, and because the process is so intensive, you don’t want a stylist who doesn’t do them on a regular basis.

Tiggi’s Travels Seeing life differently with visually-impaired Tiggi Trethowan

Sophie’s an inspiration

A

sad start to my year.

I’m very sorry to report I lost my magnificent and much loved, slightly erratic, Cockrell Rocky and his girlfriend Daz to the fox.

Human error on my part and I am heartbroken.

Sophie; however, she also told me about a cat that had sadly gone to sleep and died right in the heart of one of her sculptures. It was a willow woman in recline. The cat chose this tranquil spot to die.

Willow is synonymous with the Somerset levels and we can all feel proud our communities are surrounded by these historic wetlands. You will be able to listen to Sophie’s full story when it is released in February.

Moving on to happier things, for a future episode of Draycott Diaries, I recently chatted to the willow artist Sophie Courtiour. As a single mother she built her own eco home whilst living in a tent with three young children and enduring winter temperatures up to -10.

Her home now is complete and needing an income she started making hazel fencing hurdles.

With no training in art she expanded her skills from hazel to willow making full size horses which are her passion.

I was fascinated to discover there are over 100 different varieties of willow in various colours with wonderful old Somerset names like black maul, dicky meadows and Flanders red.

However, not all willow is suitable for making baskets, sculptures and hurdles. Somerset willow is the best in the world apparently and now exported

worldwide. The majority of commercially grown willow is in Westonzoyland.

Apparently the willow we have growing on Draycott moor is goat willow or cracked willow used for structure rather than craft. As we try to move forward towards a greener future and reduce plastics, Sophie sees willow making a resurgence.

For example there is a huge demand now for willow coffins. Sharing her willow with wildlife is a regular event for
