To The Percussive Arts Society International Convention:

The students, faculty, staff, and administration of Artie L. Henry Middle School are extremely proud and exited you have invited our Percussion Ensemble to perform at the 2014 Percussive Arts Society International Convention! The enthusiasm, dedication, and immense talent of our musicians never cease to amaze me. These young people are tremendous ambassadors for Henry Middle School and the Leander Independent School District. The recognition and acclaim they have garnered is well deserved.

Under the dedicated leadership and direction of our incredible directors (Robert Herrings, Hector Gil, Rachel Johnstone, and Jeffrey Salinas), the Henry Middle School band program has grown to over 300 students. In addition to outstanding musicianship, our band students excel in their display of both integrity and ethical behavior. I am proud of the hard work and dedication of each and every member of our exceptional band program and would like to acknowledge their contribution to our school, district, and community.

The support of our parents, community, and the LISD administration also deserves mention. Our parent support group spends countless hours and makes tremendous sacrifices to ensure our band has every opportunity to be successful. Without the consistent support of the LISD administration, none of our band’s accomplishments would be possible.

The opportunity to perform at The Percussive Arts Society International Convention is not only an honor, but the culmination of the hard work and dedication of the entire band program at Henry Middle School. performers David ANDERSON is a seventh grade percussionist in the Artie Henry Middle School Band program. He is the son of Gary and Jennifer Anderson, and he is a brother to his four siblings, Joshua, Rachael, Megan, and Sarah. He is also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and he is a Boy Scout with a goal of being an Eagle Scout. He spends 10 minutes spiking his hair every morning, and he enjoys playing basketball and practicing the piano.

David enjoys being a part of the percussion section, and he loves the variety that being a percussionist has to offer.

From this experience, David has learned the importance of time management and hard work.

Native Texan Shane CULLEN has been a passionate musician since the age of fourwhen he started piano lessons with the ACO School of Music. After watching a DCI performance when he was in the fifth grade, Shane knew that percussion was going to be the next step in expanding his musical career. Although snare is his favorite, Shane’s piano experience has also proven fruitful on marimba. Shane has participated in track, cross-country, baseball, football, lacrosse, and is a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Shane will be following in big sister Ashtyn’s footsteps when he starts marching band in 2015 at Vista Ridge High School.

Parents Alan and Kyndra could not be more proud of Shane’s accomplishments and are thrilled that Leander ISD is able to provide education that is rich in the arts.

PASIC is providing Shane with the chance to enhance his performance skills and learn more about the opportunities provided to percussionists around the world.

Evan DEKAY is an eighth grade percussionist in the Artie Henry Middle School Band program. Evan is the son of Lester and Olga DeKay, and he has one sister named Emma who attends Texas State University.

Outside of Band, Evan is a member of the Boy Scouts and enjoys playing around on his computer. Evan has a strong love for music. He began to play the piano when he was nine, but did not start reading music until he was eleven. Evan is grateful to be been selected for percussion and enjoys the wide variety of instruments that are associated with playing percussion. Evan has thoroughly enjoyed the preparation for this performance and has truly refined his skills through what he has learned from and through the music. Evan feels that he is here today because of the great work of his band directors and the family atmosphere created at Henry Middle School.

Sue HAN is a seventh grade percussionist in the Henry Middle School Band program. Her mother’s name is Suyeon, and her father’s name is Hosung. Sue has two older brothers, Daniel and Stuart.

Sue’s hobbies include playing a variety of instruments such as guitar, the bass guitar, drums, and some mainstream Asian instruments.

In her spare time, Sue enjoys obsessing over bands that she never knew existed and arguing with her brothers. She has truly loved every part of this experience. While there have been times where it has been stressful, she knows the outcome will definitely be worth it. Sue also loves being a part of the percussion section because she’s a girl, and she wants to show that girls can drum, too … and because it’s fun!

Sue feels very honored to be able to attend the 2014 PASIC Convention. Not only attending the convention, but the opportunity to actually preform is incredibly mind blowing! Being the first middle school percussion ensemble to preform at PASIC makes Sue feel like she can accomplish anything. Sue feels more than incredibly blessed to have amazing band directors who have helped her thus far, and for dealing with her because, “I’m a REALLY big handful.” Sue wishes the best for the band program and the percussion ensemble, and she feels more than ready to tackle what the future holds in life.

Graham KOVACH is an eighth grade percussionist in the Artie Henry Middle School Band program. Graham’s mother and stepfather are Melissa and Hiten Patel, and his father is Jim Kovach. Graham also has a younger brother, Ben, who is beginning his percussive career in sixth grade band.

Graham enjoys playing music, reading science fiction, running races, volunteering at local pet shelters and memorizing pi for no real reason other than for fun.

He is also headed towards his black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Percussion — especially the marimba — has become a special part of Graham’s life since the sixth grade, when his director, Mr. Gil, introduced him to it. Graham doesn’t really know where he would be without music in his life. He feels that music has sort of a “calm” woven into it … except for Lavender Town, which has scarred him for life.

Percussion has now led Graham to Indianapolis. He has prepared for the past four months, and he feels stronger than he ever has in this art. This experience has helped Graham gain confidence in

everything he does. The top band at Henry Middle School has also helped prepare and support him along the way. Graham is confident the ensemble will put on a good show, and he hopes that you will love and enjoy it as much as he does!

Alice LEE is an eighth grade percussionist in the Henry Middle School Symphonic Band. Alice feels blessed to be in band, and it has always been her favorite class in school.

Alice is genuinely excited to play at PASIC in Indianapolis, and is sincerely honored to be able to take this trip as well.

Her family is from South Korea and her mother, SH, is a professional piano teacher and her father, father YK, is a professional, award-winning engineer. Alice has one younger sibling named Daniel who is also a percussionist.

Alice’s family attends RRKPC, a Korean Christian Church. As a family, they have volunteered for food drives and fundraised for mission trips. Alice’s hobbies include ballet, which she has completed eight years of classes, and a year of Tae Kwon Do. Music is very important to Alice, and she enjoys playing, listening, and singing.

Through the preparation for the 2014 PASIC Convention performance, and performing with her Henry Middle School Band family, Alice has gained an even greater love for music and percussion. She also feels that this preparation has helped her mature as a young lady, and she is very thankful for every precious memory and opportunity that has come her way.

Collin J. MCENEANEY is an eighth grade percussionist in the Artie Henry Middle School Percussion Ensemble.

Collin lives with his mother and three adorable cats in Texas. Besides music, Collin enjoys drawing and is a trained martial artist.

Collin takes a lot of pride in being a percussionist because it is fun and challenging. Band has taught him a lot about music and also about responsibility and effort. It is a great opportunity for Collin to play at this year’s Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Collin is proud to be part of Henry Middle School Percussion Ensemble, being influenced and inspired by the best music directors.

Andrew MINNE is 13 years old, and he lives with parents, Keith and Susan Minne, his 15-year-old sister Jessica, his sister’s dog Princess, and his cat Janus, a Siberian forest cat.

Andrew’s favorite school subjects are Math, Science, and Spanish, but he enjoys every subject in some way, and does well in all of them.

performers Outside of school, Andrew really enjoys video games, like most teens, but he also loves fencing and the occasional book or two. Percussion is, of course, another favorite hobby of Andrew’s, but because of all the concerts performed, and rehearsals, it feels more like he gets to do it professionally rather than just a hobby.

Having the privilege of performing at PASIC has given Andrew some great experiences, and has allowed him to perform music he might not have had the privilege to perform otherwise. Being in band at Henry Middle School has provided him with experiences and friends he might never have experienced, and PASIC has helped him bond even more with his percussion friends from other levels of bands within the program at Henry Middle School, and even meet some amazing people who have helped prepare us for today’s concert.

Overall, Andrew is overjoyed to have this privilege, and to be one of the first to experience it.

Logan Jay MYERS is an eighth grade percussionist in the Henry Middle School Band program. Logan is 14 years old, and he lives with his parents, Ryan and Debbie. He also has two younger brothers, Caleb and Gabe. Caleb currently plays French horn in the Henry Middle School Band program as a sixth grader.

For the last three years, Logan has been studying Tae Kwon Do and has achieved the rank of a first-degree black belt. One of his favorite pastimes is drawing. From working on school projects to doodling just for fun, he’ll start sketching at any time.

Logan absolutely loves playing on his marimba at home! He has printed off countless sheets of video game music, and on top of all the practicing he does, he will occasionally attempt to pick out certain melodies from a cool movie soundtrack or TV show.

Logan feels he has gained so much more experience in just the last six months by preparing for this PASIC performance. The music the ensemble is learning for PASIC has been challenging, but also very rewarding. This will be Logan’s first time to play drum set, and it has added to his appreciation for the diversity of percussion instruments.

All in all, Logan is extremely excited about being in the first middle school percussion ensemble to be a part of PASIC and he looks forward to many more performances.

Parth PARIKH is a seventh grade percussionist in the Henry Middle School

Band program. Parth’s family consists of his Mom, Parul Parikh, his Dad, Sanjay Parikh, and his sister, Krishna Parikh.

Parth loves his family very much!

Parth used to play soccer and has love for the sport, but now instead of playing, he is a referee. He also goes to his temple every Sunday, where he helps out and volunteers. Parth loves being outdoors, playing with friends and he really likes to have a lot of fun. He also enjoys spending time with his family and going on vacations with them!

Parth loves to play percussion and feels that it relaxes him. He has gained many valuable lessons through his preparation for this performance at PASIC. Parth has learned that hard work does pay off, and how to manage his time and has gained so much more knowledge through this incredible experience! He also feels that it’s an honor to be in the Henry Middle School Band because of the amazing band directors that we have (Mr. Gil, Mr. Herrings, Mrs. Johnstone and Mr. Salinas). Parth truly feels he has gained so much musical knowledge, as well as life lessons, by being in band at Henry Middle School.

This has truly been an amazing experience for Parth.

Cole POMROY is a seventh grade percussionist at Henry Middle School. If he’s not jamming out on the marimba, Cole is working hard on his pull ups and double-unders at Crossfit, which he attends with his family, parents Todd and Amanda, younger sister Madison and younger brother Chase. Cole loves having his nose in any sci-fi novel, playing tennis, snow skiing in Colorado, body surfing in Destin, riding the Iron Rattler at Six Flags, and last but not least, playing Minecraft and Clash of Clans in his spare time.

Cole enjoys serving as a student leader in the five year old class at Northpoint Church, and has been a member of his school’s Math Pentathlon team for the last six years. Cole has gained a new respect for the meanings of hard work and dedication since joining the percussion ensemble. Along with a new skill, he has acquired valuable relationships with amazing teachers and encouraging, like minded peers.

Sergio RUENES is a seventh grade percussion student at Henry Middle School. His parents are Aide Campos and Sergio Monraz, and his younger brother is Oscar Ruenes.

Sergio makes all A’s in school, he likes to play the piano, enjoys swimming and plays a lot of video games. Music

is fun and exiting to Sergio, and he enjoys making music not only for himself but for others as well. He loves to make people smile!

The preparation for PASIC has taught Sergio many things about life, not only just music. Through this preparation, Sergio has learned the value of hard work, dedication, has made many great new friendships and has created memories that will last a lifetime.

Chloe STRAIN is a seventh grade percussionist at Henry Middle School. She has only played in the band for one year, but has such a passion for percussion that she practices on anything her sticks can hit and her hands can tap on!

Chloe moved to Texas from Chicago three years ago with her parents, Tara and Aaron, and brother, Noah. When asked if she wants to move back, Chloe really had to think long and hard about her response. As much as she misses her friends, family, Chicago Bears, and snow, Chloe is dedicated to this Percussion program and her amazing directors, Mr. Gil, Mr. Herrings, and Mrs. Johnstone, and knows this is where she wants to be.

In her spare time, Chloe loves to play football outside with the neighborhood kids, read books, and spend time with patients with terminal illnesses, traumatic brain injuries, and patients without family at the hospital her mom works at.

The only word that Chloe could think of to describe the way she feels about being invited to PASIC is, blessed.

Camilla URREA is an eighth grade percussionist, and is the daughter of Aida and Doroteo Urrea. Camilla is the youngest in her family. She has two older sisters, Alexa and Nadia. Camilla enjoys singing, dancing, watching Netflix, and making short films. She is also very active in working as a volunteer and serving in her church. She thinks that band is really fun, and knowing that she can play and create her own music amazes her.

Camilla has been extremely excited about the PASIC Convention. When she first found out, she could not hold in her excitement! This journey has definitely helped her “get out of her shell” a bit.

She will always remember this amazing experience. She thinks that being a part of the Henry Middle School Band is a privilege. Through high expectations from the directors, it helps the students to continue to raise the bar.

program MONTUNOSIS Paul JEBE Montunosis is a classical study of the Montuno style, which is a popular “hard driving” AfroCuban dance that originated in the 1930’s. While the Montuno style is rhythmically complex, the groove is un-denying and very flavorful! Montunosis is an advanced percussion ensemble that travels between 6/4 and 7/4 time signatures throughout the piece. This selection will make you dance in your seat!

JUST LIKE THAT JOSH GOTTRY Scored for one concert tom and one woodblock per player, Just Like That is a fun to perform percussion ensemble written for five players and is based on variations of a traditional cascara pattern. This energetic and rhythmically driven work weaves through several time signature changes and dramatic dynamic contrasts. The original pattern is repeated, offset, fragmented, and manipulated in a variety of ways to create an ever-changing texture as underlying melodic lines are created in the concert tom voices.

LAS GALLANITAS Aaron DALE Las Gallanitas, or “little chickens,” is a keyboard percussion sextet that features three soloists and three accompanists. The composer imagined three friends meeting at a restaurant to share the latest gossip. Each tells their story in great detail. The stories eventually overlap one another, and finally come to an agreement in a harmonious ending. This piece will have you smiling from start to finish!

LASCIATEMI MORIRE Claudio MONTEVERDI

arr. by Richard GIPSON Lasciatemi Morire (or “Ariadne’s Lament”) is taken from a madrigal written by Claudio Monteverdi.

The plot of the story comes from the Greek mythological hero Theseus who, with the help of the Cretan princess Ariadne (or Arianna), defeats the monster Minotaurus and wins her love. Nevertheless, while returning to Athens, Theseus disdainfully abandons his love, leaving her on the island Naxos. As she sees her love sail away, she decides that death is her only option.

The Dreamers of Dreams was inspired by a poem written by Arthur O’Shaughnessy simply titled “Ode.” The first line has even found its way into pop culture with a brief quote by the original Willy Wonka, Gene Wilder.

We are the music-makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams.

World-losers and world-forsakers, Upon whom the pale moon gleams; Yet we are the movers and shakers, Of the world forever, it seems.

MAH-NÁ MAH-NÁ Piero UMILIANI

arr. Christopher RETSCHULTE Mah Nà Mah Nà is a popular song that originally appeared in the Italian film Heaven and Hell. It was a minor radio hit in the U.S. and in Britain but became better known in Englishspeaking countries from its use in a recurring blackout sketch for the 1969-70 season of The Red Skelton Show, the 14th episode of Sesame Street, and the first episode of The Muppet Show. This arrangement preserves the catchy melodic material and enhances the upbeat style with vocalizations, birdcalls, handclaps, and vibraslap. This rendition of Mah Nà Mah Nà will have you humming it all day long!

FRANKENSTEIN Edgar WINTER

arr. David STEINQUEST Frankenstein is an instrumental song by The Edgar Winter Group from their album They Only Come Out at Night. The song’s title, coined by the band’s drummer Chuck Ruff, is in relation to its hard and heavy “monster-like, lumbering beat.” The original recording of the song was much longer than the final version, as the band would often deviate from the arrangement into less structured jams. This is a popular piece for all ages and will undoubtedly “Rock” your socks off!

conductors Hector GIL is in his thirteenth year of teaching and joined the staff at Vista Ridge High School and Henry Middle School as the Director of Percussion in 2008. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2001.

Mr. Gil’s students and ensembles have achieved numerous honors and have performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in 2008; the Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition Winners in 2014; the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2010, 2012, and 2014; the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in 2010 and 2014; the Western International Band Clinic in 2008 and 2013; the Texas State Marching Band Contest in 2008 and 2013; and the Winter Guard International World Championships in 2006 and 2007.

He was a member of the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps in 1997 and 1998. In 2000, Mr. Gil was in the TAMU-Commerce Percussion Ensemble that won the PAS International Percussion Ensemble Competition and also received second place at PASIC with the TAMU-Commerce Drumline.

Mr. Gil has performed many concerts with the Texas A&M University-Commerce Wind Ensemble, the Texas A&M University-Commerce Drumline, the Texas A&M University-Commerce Steel Band, the Texas Christian University Wind Symphony, the Texas Christian University Symphony Orchestra, the Texas Christian University Percussion EnHector GIL semble, and the North East Texas Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Gil has composed, arranged, adjudicated and has served as a clinician for numerous percussion programs throughout Texas.

His professional affiliations include The Percussive Arts Society, Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, and is a proud Education Artist with Innovative Percussion Inc. Mr. Gil lives in Cedar Park with his wife Brandy and their two daughters Makayla and Elena, along with their Westie Ana.

Robert Tyrome HERRINGS, III, is entering his twelfth year of teaching and has been teaching at Henry Middle School in Leander ISD since 2004. Prior to coming to Leander ISD, he was the Director of Bands at Rockdale Junior High in Rockdale, Texas.

In 2003, Mr. Herrings received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he studied under Michael Haithcock, Jeff Grogan, Dr. Kevin Sedatole, and Barry Hopper. While in college, Mr. Herrings was a member of the Baylor University performing wind bands, as well as a member of the Baylor University Golden Wave Band.

At Henry Middle School, Mr. Herrings conducts the Honors Band, assists with the Symphonic Band, Concert Band and beginning trombone class. He also teaches beginning flute and trumpet. Mr. Herrings’ bands have consistently received UIL Sweepstakes ratings, as well as unanimous first division ratings, Best In Class, and Overall Outstanding Band honors at festivals around the state. In 2009-2014, the program at Henry earned distinction as a National Wind Band Honors Class AA winner, and in 2008 and 2013, the Henry Middle School Honors Band was selected to perform at the Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Washington. The program was named the 2010 and 2014 TMEA Class CCC Honor Band and was also selected to perform at the 2010 and 2012 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. In June 2011, Mr. Herrings and his program were awarded the prestigious John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Silver Cup Award, Robert T. HERRINGS, III and in July of the same year, Mr. Herrings was named the Phi Beta Mu Outstanding Young Bandmaster of the Year. Most recently, the Percussion Ensemble at Henry Middle School was selected to perform at the 2014 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

An active clinician and adjudicator around the state, Mr. Herrings is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association. Mr. Herrings also serves as the TMEA Region 26 Middle School Band Chair, as well as the Region 26 TBA representative. He is also a mentor to new-to-profession teachers at Henry Middle School.

Mr. Herrings enjoys motivating young musicians to achieve the highest level of performance by sharing his extreme love and passion for music with them on a daily basis. He feels honored, privileged and extremely blessed to have a loving mother and grandmother, many great mentors, band directors and close friends who have influenced his career thus far.

Above all, his students have been his greatest inspiration!

Rachel JOHNSTONE is currently in her fifth year of band directing and is in her fourth year at Henry Middle School. Mrs. Johnstone teaches the Symphonic Band, the beginner clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon classes, and she assists with the Honors and Concert Band.

Mrs. Johnstone was most recently the associate band director at T.A. Howard Middle School in Mansfield ISD from 2013 – 2014 and was an assistant band director at Henry Middle School from 2010 – 2013. During her time at both Howard Middle School and Henry Middle School, her bands received UIL Sweepstakes ratings each year and Best in Class honors at various festivals. She guest conducted the Henry Middle School Honors Band at their Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic performance in 2010, and at the Trombone Ensemble’s Midwest performance in 2012. In additional to those performances, The Henry Middle School Band was also awarded the prestigious John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Silver Cup in 2011, and was named the TMEA 2014 CCC Honor Band in the summer of 2013.

Prior to starting her band directing career, Mrs. Johnstone was an active private clarinet instructor for various band programs in the Leander and Round Rock ISDs. In 2008, Mrs. Johnstone earned a Bachelor’s degree in Clarinet Performance from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While at Northwestern, she performed in the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Contemporary Rachel JOHNSTONE Music Ensemble and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Mallory Thompson. Mrs. Johnstone has studied clarinet under Mary Schani, Leslie Grimm, Russell Dagon, Steve Cohen, and Lawrie Bloom. She was in the TMEA All-State Symphonic Band in 2003 and 2004, was a finalist in the University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium Young Artists Concerto Competition and the Austin Civic Orchestra Pearl Amster Competition, and a winner of the National High School Music Institute Honors Solo Competition.

Mrs. Johnstone’s professional memberships include the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association.

Mrs. Johnstone is newly married and lives in the Austin area with her husband, Ryan, who is a band director in Round Rock ISD.

Jeffrey SALINAS is currently in his first year of teaching and first year at Henry Middle School. Mr. Salinas teaches the Concert Band, and assists with the Honors and Symphonic Bands. He also teaches the beginner French horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba classes.

In 2014, Mr. Salinas received his Bachelors of Music in Music Studies from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, where he studied under Dr. Mary Ellen Cavitt, Dr. Amy Simmons, and Dr. Keith Winking. While at Texas State, Mr. Salinas performed with the Texas State Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Bobcat Marching Band, and various chamber ensembles. He was a member of the 2009 TMEA All-State Band, and was a finalist in the Texas State University Concerto Competition in 2011 and 2012.

Mr. Salinas is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association.

Mr. Salinas is originally from Harlingen, Texas, and he is exceptionally grateful to have unwavering love, support, and encouragement from his parents Ralph and Susan Salinas. Mr. Salinas truly enjoys working with students and mentors everyday in his favorite subject area. He hopes to enrich student’s lives and assist in further developing the field of music education.

Henry Middle School is part of the Leander Independent School District, located a few miles northwest of Austin, Texas. The school opened in 2002 as a sixth, seventh and eighth grade campus that serves approximately 1,400 students today. It is an ethnically diverse school with 59.8% Caucasian, 24.3% Hispanic, 6.2% Asian, 5.7% African American, and 4% other student population.

about the ARTIE HENRY MIDDLE SCHOOL PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

The Artie Henry Middle School Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Hector Gil, is the inaugural winner of the Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition for the Middle School or Junior High category. The ensemble is comprised of a diverse group of 7th and 8th graders that range in age from 11 to 14. Beginning in 6th grade, these students developed a huge passion for percussion by constantly being challenged to perform to the best of their ability. In the school’s relatively short history, the Henry Middle School Band and Percussion Ensemble have performed at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in 2010 and 2014, the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2010, 2012, and 2014, and the Western International Band Clinic in 2008 and 2013. The Henry Middle School Percussion Ensemble is quickly becoming one of the premier middle school percussion programs in the state of Texas and in the United States.

about the ARTIE HENRY MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM

The band program at Henry Middle School serves more than 325 students, with seventh and eighth graders enrolled in one of three performing bands, and sixth grade beginning band classes in a homogeneous setting.

Since the school opened in 2002, the Artie Henry bands have been consistent UIL Sweepstakes winners, and have been well-represented at Solo and Ensemble contest, TMEA All-Region Band and Region Orchestra auditions. Under the direction of Robert Herrings, Rachel Johnstone, Jeffrey Salinas and Hector Gil, the Henry bands have earned numerous honors and awards at festivals in Texas. In 2008 and 2013, the band was invited to perform at the prestigious Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Washington. The HMS Band program was named the 2010 & 2014 Texas Class CCC Honor Band. In 2010 and 2012, the HMS Band program was invited to perform at The Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and in 2011 the program was awarded the coveted John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Silver Cup Award. Most recently, the HMS Percussion Ensemble was invited to perform at the 2014 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, IN. To improve their individual skills and musicianship, all students in the HMS band program attend weekly section rehearsals, and many students take advantage of the opportunity for private lessons through the LISD Private Lesson Program. In addition to their involvement in band activities, HMS band students are also active in other activities, including National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, Leadership, Yearbook/Journalism, Athletics, Art, Cheerleading, Dance Team, Theatre and many more.

Through the dedicated work of many individuals, the program has built a tradition of success that has flourished within the school and in the community.

I have literally come full circle — being your student that once walked onto the PASIC Percussion Ensemble Stage 14 years ago, and now I’m actually here yet again with my own Percussion Ensemble. You planted this dream in me long ago, and you are the friend that I will always think about when I step in front of my students.

TO ROBERT HERRINGS: You have been an absolute blessing to me these last seven years. I had no idea I would love working with you this much when I first started with the program.
