The 27th Fiji College of General Practitioners Conference at the Shangrila The Fijian Sports and Spa. The annual event bring us all together especially our former colleagues now practicing abroad. This group have been sponsoring students from our two medical schools. Thank you Dr. Bram Singh and colleagues for the generous support. Conference 2019 has attracted a good section of the medical fraternity, to share and broaden our knowledge. This year’s theme “Climate Change, Public Health & Families” looks primarily at the changing pattern of diseases and emergence of microbial resistance. These are challenges facing us today. Local and International Experts have volunteered their time and effort to present relevant scientific papers. For the first time we have a Platinum sponsor MIOT ( Madras Institute of Trauma) for this event. FCGP 25k subsidy to members. Medica Pacifica and Pharmatec as Gold. Also note our regular associate sponsors, who sponsor our seminars on regular basis. Thank you conference organising team, volunteers and all service providers. We also welcome family members coming all the way to support this conference. The Five Star resort, that provides a wide range of fun filled activities. For any other assistance do contact us directly at the venue. Enjoy your stay with us. Dr. Dhirendra Lal | Conference Director

Trisha was born and raised in Sydney, Australia with close family ties in Fiji. She completed her Masters in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Sydney in 2012. After this she worked in the NSW government disability sector for 5 years providing communication and swallowing support to individuals across the lifespan with developmental or intellectual disabilities. She has experience working in community, school, and adult acute hospital settings. Trisha moved to Suva in mid 2018 and opened her business, Speech Pathology Services, which operates from Suva Physio Centre. Trisha has received over 75 referrals, mainly for young children who are late to talk, or have a developmental delay or disability. At this time Trisha is the only speech pathologist in Fiji, but she hopes this will change in the near future with growing awareness about the need for her profession in Fiji. Her areas of interest are paediatric feeding and speech/articulation. Ms. Trisha Khatri MSLP, Certified Practising Speech Pathologist
Speech and Language Milestones Summary: This presentation will provide an overview of the speech and language milestones for children aged 0-6 years, as this information can help doctors to identify children who may need extra support. It will discuss how applicable these milestones are for children born into multilingual households in Fiji. Trisha will also share some basic advice for parents of late talkers and parents from multilingual households.

Climate Change and the Heart Climate change and extreme weather changes have many negative effects on health. Whereas direct effects on conditions such as dehydration and heat stroke, and various health consequences of climate-change-associated natural disasters, are well documented and studied, little is known about its cardiovascular effects. This talk will highlight the negative impact of climate change resulting in increased cardiac events and cardiac mortality, especially in vulnerable populations.
