Student Support Help Desk Robertson provides support on matters that are non-academic in nature. For these types of requests, students may request assistance through the Student Support Ticketing System. Students may access the ticketing system by clicking on the “Virtual Student Support” widget located in Brightspace as follows: Please ensure you are using the “Virtual Student Support” and not the Online link.

Updates to Your Personal Information Students are required to update the College on any changes to their personal or contact information, such as address, phone number, or email address. Changes should be made through your Robertson student portal.
Course Schedules Students are provided with a program schedule prior to the start of their program. Robertson will automatically register students in the courses required for their program. Please refer to your program schedule throughout the program as needed. Robertson reserves the right to adjust course schedules and to cancel and/or merge courses.

International Student Support Services Roberson offers a number of support services to help our international students adjust to living and learning in Canada. Student ID In order to get their student ID cards, students can send a picture or have a picture taken at the campus. ID’s will be printed and the instructor will be informed via email when student ID badges are ready to be distributed to the students. There is a $5.00 charge to replace a lost or damaged ID badge.
Enrollment Letters An enrollment letter is issued upon request free of charge. There will be a $20 fee charged for the second copy. A request must be submitted through email to international.admission@robertsoncollege.ca along with full name, program and intake, and purpose of the letter.
Lockers Lockers are scattered throughout the campus for use by all students. Only locks issued by Robertson College can be used. Students can rent a lock for $10.00 at reception. If the lock is returned, the student receives $5.00 back. Lockers themselves are not individually assigned. Students are free to use whatever locker does not already have a lock on it. If a non-Robertson College lock is found on a locker, a notice will be posted on the locker asking the owner to remove it. If not removed in a timely fashion, the lock will be broken, and the contents of the locker will be left at reception for the student to claim.

Navigating Around Winnipeg
Airport Pick-Up Available to the students who are registered for a homestay program. For those who are not registered for a homestay program but in need of help, contact international.admission@robertsoncollege.ca
Post-Secondary Student Bus Card For students that choose to take the bus to school, a post-secondary Peggo Card can be used to keep your monthly bus pass, weekly bus pass, or just money to use for individual fare rides. The Peggo card has a one-time fee of $5 and is available at the Robertson reception desk. Students need to load their card after their card after it has been purchased and activated. Students can load their cards online, by calling 311, or certain retail agents. If the card is lost/defective, students can visit reception if they would like a replacement. For more information about bus passes and ticket outlets, please visit the Winnipeg Transit website. Registering a Peggo card online is recommended because if an unregistered Peggo card is lost, any fares left on the card cannot be retrieved. If a registered Peggo card is lost, the owner of the card would have the ability to recover the remaining value from the card. Parking All students who drive to school can purchase hourly, daily, or a monthly parking on the street or from Impark lots. Students wishing to find daily or monthly parking, please visit Impark’s website for more information and a map of parking areas. Students who are interested in hourly parking can download the City of Winnipeg pay by phone app.
Health & Wellness Support Guard.Me Insurance All international students who are ineligible to enroll in provincial healthcare plans must enroll in the Guard Me insurance plan through Robertson College. Guard Me fees are paid along with your tuition. Any necessary extensions will be facilitated by the international team. If your health insurance has expired and you have yet to receive your new card, please contact your Robertson team at international.admission@robertsoncollege.ca as soon as possible. Campus Safety Robertson is committed to providing a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Knowing what to do is your responsibility and your form of protection. In the event of a health, safety, or environmental emergency, please contact campus management immediately. Students should be familiar with the fire safety procedures, evacuation routes, and the locations of emergency equipment for their campus location. Students are expected to understand and follow Robertson’s Health and Safety protocols as outlined below: ● Students should immediately report any hazard or unsafe situation to their instructor
or campus management. ● Students are required to report an accident, an injury, a “near miss,” or any equipment damage to their instructor or campus management immediately. Reporting includes completing written documentation related to the incident. ● Students are responsible to ensure they are using all personal and protective equipment
and take every reasonable precaution to protect themselves and others at the college. ● Students must cooperate with responding emergency personnel and comply with all
directions and/or instructions they give. ● Robertson adheres to all public health orders and will communicate changes in policy,
programs, or safety in accordance with those orders.
Emergency Closures Robertson will make every effort to communicate emergency closure details to students via media or electronic communication. In the event of inclement weather, Robertson will follow the local public school board closures. Due to the flexibility of virtual education, should an emergency closure of the Robertson College Administrative Office occur, students will be notified through the News tool in Brightspace, the Robertson App, and by email.

COVID-19 Q & A
Does Robertson require vaccination for on-campus activity? No, Robertson is committed to the continued promotion of the health and safety of the Robertson community from the spread of COVID-19. Robertson complies with public health guidelines and orders and monitors national and provincial recommendations regarding reducing the spread of COVID-19.
Do I have to wear a mask on campus, even if I am fully vaccinated? Due to the lack of ability to social distance, masks are mandatory in the classrooms. Masks are not mandatory in public areas of the campus, but are recommended.

Holidays
Religious Holidays
Robertson is closed on provincial, civic, and national holidays. The online learning management system, Brightspace, will be available to all students during holidays and administrative office closures.
Students may choose not to attend class or write exams or tests on holy days of their religion. Students must inform their instructor – in writing (via email) of their intention at least one week before the holy day. If the student informs their instructor of their intention, the instructor will make arrangements for the student to make up any work missed without penalty to the student.
Robertson will be closed on the following holidays as well as the period between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Textbooks/eBooks & Course Materials Course instructional materials are in the form of eBooks, or other electronic materials, software, and/or media which will be provided to students by Robertson. Students must bring their laptops with them to class every day to access the required materials.
Laptop/Computer Requirements All students must have a PC laptop or desktop computer and a reliable internet connection before the start of their program. Macs are accepted for most programs. Tablets and mobile devices are not sufficient to complete required coursework. Students should also ensure they are running the most current version of their browser for an optimal experience. Students must ensure that they have a minimum of 4GB Memory and up to 2GB of free hard drive space.
Software Requirements All students at Robertson must purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription prior to beginning their studies at Robertson. Students will require Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook for their programs; therefore, the Microsoft 365 Family Account or Microsoft 365 Personal Account will suffice. 2013, 2016 and 2019 versions of MSO software are acceptable.

Graduation Graduation Requirements Robertson Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas are awarded to students who have met the following graduation requirements: ●
Successful completion of each course in the program, by achieving a grade of 70% or higher in the course.
●
Successful completion of the program with an average of 70% or higher.
●
Financial account is in good standing.
Diplomas, certificates, and transcripts are available to students approximately four weeks after the last day of their program provided that the student has successfully met all graduation requirements and given that the student is in good standing with Robertson College. Additional copies of transcripts and diplomas may be requested for a fee of $20 per document. The document request will be processed via Robertson International Team only.
Graduation Ceremonies Robertson International holds graduation ceremonies at least twice a year. Eligible graduates will be invited to participate. Information will be provided by your International team prior to the event.

Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba, Canada. The city is centered on the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, near the longitudinal center of North America. Known as the "Gateway to the West", Winnipeg is a railway and transportation hub with a diversified economy. This multicultural city hosts numerous annual festivals, including the Festival du Voyageur, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Jazz Festival, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, and Folklorama.
Canadian Culture Canada’s multiculturalism is our identity. More than one in five Canadians are foreign-born and two in five Canadian children have an immigrant background. Canada is the first country in the world to affirm multiculturalism as a fundamental value. We value people of all cultures, ages, religions, abilities and talents.
Tips for Managing Culture Shock ● ● ● ● ●
Ask questions if you are unsure of something. Get involved in group events, sports or other activities in Winnipeg. Try new experiences and be open to new ideas. Talk to other international students about their life in Canada. Remember that everyone adapts at their own pace to life in a new country. Take the time to adapt to your new life in Canada.
Time Zones Canada has 6 time zones: Pacific (PST), Mountain (MST), Central (CST), Eastern (EST), Atlantic (AST) and Newfoundland (NST). Winnipeg is in the CST zone.
Social Insurance Number (SIN) In order for international students or foreign nationals to work in Canada, they need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) as well as a work permit. Visit one of the Service Canada Centre with a passport, study permit/work permit that states you “may accept employment” or “may work” in Canada.

Canadian Currency Canada’s currency is the Canadian dollar (CAD). It’s available in 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar paper notes. Canadian coins circulate as: 5 cents (nickel), 10 cents (dime), 25 cents (quarter), CAD 1 (loonie), and CAD 2 (toonie).
Tipping In Canada, people tip service providers such as bartenders, waiters, hairdressers, concierges, spa service providers and taxi drivers. A tip is a sign of appreciation for the service you receive. It’s not included on your bill. Generally, tips range from 10 to 20 percent of your total bill.
Tax Remember that there is a 12% tax added onto the price of non-essential goods you purchase. GST rate in Canada is 5% and the PST(RST) rate in Manitoba is 7%.

Bank Account & Financial Advice Students should open a bank account as soon as they arrive in Canada. It is unsafe to carry large sums of money or to leave large sums of money in your home. In order to open a bank account, students should call or visit a bank that is a convenient distance from your home and book an appointment. Be sure to ask what documents are required. Some documents that may be required include: Passport, Letter of acceptance, Study permit, Canadian driver's license, Proof of address (bills or rental agreement/contract), Traveler’s cheque or Cash to deposit. ● ● ● ●
Chequing Account - useful for everyday financial transactions and purchases Saving Account - a safe place to store money, and it accumulates more interest Debit Card - allows bank customers to spend money by drawing on funds they have deposited at the bank Credit Card - allow consumers to borrow money from the card issuer up to a certain limit in order to purchase items or withdraw cash

Driver’s License A new resident in Manitoba can drive a passenger vehicle with the valid license for up to three months. Those who have never held a driver’s license will need to successfully complete Manitoba’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) program. In order to apply for a Manitoba license, visit any Autopac agent or MPI Service Centre with the following documents: ● ● ● ●

Weather and Clothing
Average temperatures by month in Winnipeg Wind chill in the winter - Sometimes called the wind chill factor, wind chill is a way to measure temperature based on the effect of wind. High winds blowing on a cold day lower the temperature and it feels even colder. For example, a day of -5°C with a wind of 20 km/hr will feel like -12°C. The -12°C temperature is the wind chill for that day. Clothing for winter - Wearing layers of clothing and waterproof boots will help you stay warm
Humidex in the summer - Charting the humidex is a way to measure heat based on the effect of moisture (humidity) in the air. A high level of humidity on a warm summer day makes the day feel hotter. For example, with a humidity level of 85%, a day with 25°C temperature will feel like 34°C. Clothing for summer - Some warmer clothing (jeans, pants, long-sleeved shirts, sweatshirts...) will be needed throughout the summer. Evenings can be quite cool even in July and August. Summer is also a good time for layering.

Safety, Emergency, and Medical/Dental Care Personal safety and care of valuables:

At the bus stop, stand close to the entrance of the shelter, so that you can come out in case that you feel unsafe when someone coming in the shelter
●
Travel safely on buses, trains and taxis. Know your bus route and schedule before you leave. Do not hitchhike.
●
When you come across panhandlers (someone who asks people for money in a public place) on the street, politely say “No, thank you” and keep walking.
●
Be cautious toward strangers, just as you would anywhere.
●
Make a copy of important documents, such as your passport and credit/debit card and keep it somewhere safe at home.
●
Open a bank account as soon as you are able to.
●
DO NOT CARRY large sums of money. Cheques are mostly used for large amounts, such as tuition fee, rent and bill payments. Your bank can issue personalized cheques when you open an account.

911 Emergency Reporting 911 is the emergency telephone number for North America. Call 911 for any crime in progress (break & enter, robbery, etc), any situation where people or property are at risk (fire, children on ice, etc), or any medical emergency (heart attack, accidental poisoning, etc) When dialing 9-1-1: ●
Stay on the line, stay calm and explain the emergency, as well as the full address where the emergency is occurring. The address and telephone number from which you are calling is automatically displayed to the operator (unless you are calling from a cell phone).
●
Through appropriate questioning, the 9-1-1 operator will determine what you are reporting and then transfer you to the appropriate Emergency Service (Police, Fire or Paramedics).
●
Let the operator control the conversation and stay on the line until you are told to hang up.
●
On very rare occasions, you may get a recorded message when dialing the 9-1-1 emergency line. Do not hang up. Your call will be answered as soon as an operator is available.
●
If you are unsure if something that is happening is actually an emergency, dial 9-1-1 and report what is happening to the operator. If they decide it is not an emergency, they will simply ask you to hang up and call the non-emergency telephone number.

Medical Care Guard Me covers some medical expenses. Some clinics deal with Guard Me directly, so there is no out of pocket expense for the service. However, for clinics that do not deal with Guard Me directly, you will need to pay for the service upfront and then make a claim to Guard Me online at: https://www.guard.me/claim.php. Be sure to know what is covered and what is not, before you visit the clinic.
Family Doctor & Walk-in Clinics Your family doctor or primary care clinic is your medical home where most of your health issues can, and should, be addressed. You should always try to seek care for non-emergency issues with your family doctor or walk-in-clinic first. See your doctor or walk-in-clinic for things like: ● ● ● ●
minor illnesses, flu, rashes or infections diagnosis and specialist referral ongoing management of health conditions and preventative care prescriptions, vaccinations and inoculations
Medicine In Canada, you can buy medicine at a pharmacy or drugstore. For prescription medicine, you will need an authorized prescription from a doctor. You must see the doctor in their office or at a hospital to get a prescription. Other medicines, such as pills for a headache or ointments to help a cut heal, are called “over-the-counter” drugs. They’re available in any drugstore or pharmacy, as well as some grocery stores. You don’t need a prescription to buy these types of medicine. If you use a prescription drug in your home country, talk to your doctor about how to get your prescription filled in Canada.

Emergency Room & Urgent Care Urgent care centres are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to address urgent but not life-threatening health concerns. Urgent care centres are able to provide services not available in many doctors’ offices, such as stitches and casts, but are not equivalent to emergency departments. Urgent care centres help conserve emergency department resources for more serious, life-threatening conditions. Patients are seen based on their medical need, not order of arrival.
