Spatial Justice Conceptual Model (SJCM)
The Spatial Justice Conceptual Model (SJCM) is a framework for understanding and analysing how justice is produced, distributed, and experienced across space. Developed by the Centre for the Just City, the model helps planners, policymakers, researchers, and community organisations examine the social impacts of planning decisions and urban development processes.
The SJCM is built around three interconnected dimensions of spatial justice: distributive justice, which concerns the fair allocation of resources, opportunities, services, and environmental benefits and burdens; procedural justice, which focuses on participation, representation, transparency, and democratic decision-making; and recognitional justice, which addresses dignity, identity, belonging, and the acknowledgement of diverse communities, histories, and forms of knowledge.
