Spatial Justice Package: The Spatial Justice Benchmarking Tool
The Spatial Justice Benchmarking Tool (SJBT) is the assessment and monitoring component of the Spatial Justice Package. While the Spatial Justice Handbook explains what spatial justice is and why it matters, the Benchmarking Tool helps users determine how just a policy, plan, project, neighbourhood, city, or governance process actually is.
The tool was developed in response to a common problem in planning and urban policy: many institutions claim to pursue equity, inclusion, and sustainability, yet often lack systematic ways of evaluating whether these goals are being achieved. The Spatial Justice Benchmarking Tool addresses this gap by providing a structured framework for measuring and comparing justice outcomes across different contexts.
At its core, the tool assesses three interrelated dimensions of spatial justice:
Distributive Justice
Examines how resources, opportunities, public goods, environmental benefits, and burdens are distributed
