I shaped my first boards beneath my parent’s home, 30 years later and our shaping room is still at the heart of the company, both physically and metaphorically. Living up to our philosophy “non-stop research and development” wouldn’t be possible any other way.

While you have the choice to outsource your resources, our choice is to keep a direct connection between shaper and our testers, graphic designers, and marketing team, all working together in the same building.

With so many thoughts it’s hard to say which was the key decision along the way, though if pressed I’d have to say starting with a blank sheet opened the possibility to analyze and re-think what the perfect wave board you’d use every day would look like.

We were influenced by a new line of short boards that appeared to have their nose and tail cut off, it’s what we now call the COTAN board (Cut Off Tail and Nose).

While we found lots of innovative inspiration, going for a radically shorter length and accompanying wider tail and nose we were limiting the “allround” nature of the board which is a key feature of the Wave Cults.

FIRE WAVE LTD / WOOD V1 FAST WAVE BOARD When you think you have tried all the possible wave boards shapes, you will wake up one day and be able to try one of our new boards in the RRD collection: THE FIREWAVE. It’s really fast, quick to plane, and accelerates like a freeride board, yet it turns smoothly and precisely on the face of any waves.

It’s a magic shape that combines a long flat section of rocker line with a new wave outline which we developed for the highly successful 5th generation of Wave Cult boards. The other important shape feature is the volume placement of the board. Its main difference from our classic Wave Cults is the concentration of the maximum thickness in the footstraps and tail area. This allows us to not only create a quick planing surface that combined with a reduced tail outline area, compared to a freestyle wave board, increases tremendously the Firewaves turning capacity and control at high speed.

All in all the FIREWAVE boards open up a whole new way of riding a wave board.

Firstly, you can increase the amount of times you can use a wave board when the conditions are marginal, then you will also have a faster, better planing board when trying to get back out through the surf, and you will also be able to carry more speed through both your back- and frontside turns.

FREESTYLE WAVE LTD / WOOD V3 FREESTYLE WAVE As the trend of wave board shapes keeps going towards multifin hulls, we have preferred to retain a “classic”, reliable and fast planing single fin board line that would be suited for those who wish for a “do it all” type of short board. The new Freestyle Wave boards, Version 3, are four new simple, refined, retuned shapes that will cover the whole range of use of this program.

The Rocker is now a little more kicked up in the very last 40 cms from the nose, to allow a small amount more volume displacement towards the nose and thereby create a better balanced feeling in the boards floatation.

The Rocker in the mid/rear section is the same as the previous V2 version. Straight and fast. The Volume displacement has now changed with less volume on the tail and more volume on the nose, to create an amazingly well balanced board which ensures more accurate trim on the water both in planing and non-planing conditions. The simple slight double concave/ V rail to rail configuration of the hull allows a perfect flow and balance over the roughest waters in any conditions.

TWINTIP LTD V5 FREESTYLE PRO The Twin Tip V5 is RRD’s pure blooded long running and highly popular Freestyle Board line.

The version 5 brings one new shape into life, the 91lts. This shape has been shortened down to 228 cm to achieve a more free and easy to jump board. It is also changed in the rail profile: a 5 mm extra bevel on the edge of the hull has been added to create a looser, more free sliding behaviour of the board in the water during power manouvers and doubles.

The Rocker line is essentially the same as the previous version, except that we have taken out the small kick we previously had and this keeps the whole tail area of the rocker line completely flat, and therefore the TT V5 is even quicker to plane.

The very end of the tail features the re-introduction of the so called “spock tail shape” that helps while switching stance, and also enables a more central position of the body during landing, and also prevents the board from sinking on its tail.

As the new school style keeps progressing we want to make sure that our shapes follow the latest trends and deliver pure performance support to serious freestyle riders!

X-FIRE LIGHTWIND LTD V2 SLALOM / RACE This is the new X-Fire LIGHT WIND LTD V2. A new great light wind machine that will make every day the perfect day to go fast on the water.

Finally a real light wind “killer” that proves that windsurfing is starting to be fantastic already from 8 knots.

Specifically designed to be used with big sail sizes from 8.0 square meters and up, the X-Fire Light Wind LTD takes inspiration from our racing machines used

by Antoine Albeau in the PWA world tour and goes one step further in using the physics of light wind weather and pushing the boundaries of efficiency in this very special conditions.

The board is 236 x 91 cms of width, with a very wide tail area designed with a Toro tail profile, to help the planing capacity but also keeping the importance into account of getting the board as free as possible and out of the water once going.

Reaching great top end speeds with such light air has never been easier, also thanks to the big cutouts in the tail area that help releasing the wide tail from the water, making the board rolling onto one side and keeping the low nose profile high enough but perfectly trimmed so that it never flies out.

Once the board is up and going it is so simple to go fast and keep the whole system in control. Also jibing this big monster is quite easy thanks to the Toro Tail, and it’s going to be interesting to learn to never loose the plane with such light wind.

FIRESTORM LTD / WOOD V3 FAST FREERIDE /FREE RACE Originally designed and trimmed to combine early planing, speed, control and easy jibing, the new Firestorm V3 line has been completely re-considered, not only in terms of shape and details, but mainly for its program of use. During the last 48 months since the first introduction of the Firestorm V1 Line, we have consistently kept on shaping new prototypes trying to improve the magic mix of the existing boards. But we could only improve one or two parameters, better upwind or better jibing while keeping the same top speed, but then either early planing or manouverability was getting worse. 48 months of development, over 25 prototype boards and over 300 hours of testing time in the water have not been able to improve the magic mix of the V1 and V2 Firestorm shapes. Then we have started to reconsider the program of use and we have understood that when you choose a new board around the program of “fast freeriding” the most important parameter is SPEED. So the whole concept of creating a 30% faster board whilst keeping early planing and control have given life to a completely new line of Firestorm boards: the VERSION 3.

The Firemove concept is based on an oversized middle width, an extra reduced volume thickness and rail shape, combined with a very long flat section scooprocker line. An impossible combination for most at first, a real innovation for all after testing this magic breed of board shapes.

Rig a wave sail and you can still plane quickly and manouver like on a freestyle wave board, use a freeride or a two cam sail, and off you go... full blast at top speed, keeping the same track as those freeriders around you.

After over 2 years of testing, the Vogue Mk7 is now with 4 battens throughout the entire range. Thanks to changes in the outline and shaping of the larger sizes we were able to offer the same control and stability of the previous 5 batten model, but with the lighter and more responsive feel of the 4 batten design. At the request of the team we also increased the power slightly, therefore increasing its range of use and improving its global usage.

GAMMA MK2 3 BATTENS WAVE The Gamma is our 3 batten wave ripper. Our lightest and most reactive sail, with plenty of drive in the bottom turn, plus lots of release off the top. This is the sail for the pure wave rider.

The Mk1 Gamma proved to be hugely popular, but like always with RRD, we continued our non stop research and development program searching for more performance. After countless hours of testing we continued to utilise a slightly modified cross batten design to maximise stability and offer a light in the hands feel for the rider that wants to focus on riding. Through a small increase in the boom length we were able to both increase the power slightly, whilst at the same time reducing the head width and therefore increasing control over the top of the sail.

Optimised for surfing the wave, but equally at home in the air. This is the sail for the rider who prioritizes wave riding.

EVOLUTION MK8 FREERIDE Optimised for early planing, the Evolution gets the rider moving quickly, and with great control and ease of use the fun factor is huge.

The Mk8 sees an additional sail in the line up. Offering more in the key 6.0-7.5 size range, we now feature 6.3, 6.8 and 7.3, giving more options to everyone. Learning from our Firewing development program we modified the lower leech tension, increasing the bottom end power and locking this power low down in the sail. We then added negative leech curve to the outline to improve the control and by doing so increase the overall range of the sail.

For the rider who wants to get up and moving quickly and maximise their fun on the water.

Learning from our Firewing development program our goal was to further increase the already wide range of the Fire. By increasing the lower leech tension we could improve both the low end power and also the stability of the sail. Learning from our work on the Gamma we reduced the number of battens to 3, massively reducing the weight of the sail and offering increased response, which is often hard to find in tiny sails. Built around the new 320 mast, the goal was to get everything as light as possible, particularly up high in the sail, where it is most noticeable. A mixed carbon content mast, mixing the affordability of a C60 base, with the light weight of a higher carbon content top section. Giving the ultimate balance of price/performance.

The Kid joy has had a complete makeover. New sizes, new concept and a new look.

The goal after working with our numerous schools around the world was to have the smaller sizes in particular, much lighter and also offer additional models to make life as easy as possible during the learning stages. An additional 0.8 size gives the smaller riders more time on the water and a closer spacing of 0.8/1.0/1.2/1.5/2.0, gives them the perfect tool for learning as they grow and progress. New concepts in the complete package further help to keep weight to a minimum and make life easy. Split luff sleeve, full x-ply and fixed booms, help keep the weight to an absolute minimum particularly up high where it is most noticeable when uphauling.

BOOM COLLECTION For 2015 RRD introduces a new collection of booms. Covering everything from pro level carbon, through to entry level alloy, this is the most comprehensive and thought out collection ever.

Perhaps the most exciting is our 25mm carbon wave boom, taking comfort and performance to new levels. A super slim tube diameter massively increases grip strength and endurance, plus a completely redesigned back end works in harmony with the modern wave and freestyle sails. Our T9 Alloy booms have improved tail ends to fit better with the modern sail designs, including increased tail width on the highly successful MR “reduced diameter alloy” All booms feature harness line indicators to help get the rig set up and balanced perfectly, as well as a reworked ‘abrasion resistant’ graphic. By studying the wear and tear on used booms we were able to move the key graphic elements to abrasion free areas, helping the booms remain looking great for even longer.

They are both produced with these special new features: End reinforcements laminated with hi-tenacity carbon to prevent damage onto the UD fibers of the body of the mast. FAHRENHEIT The Fahrenheit is the latest development available for a super quick drying wetsuit combined with extra durability and stretch. The whole wetsuit is made without any stitches, it’s fully liquid taped on the outside and fabric taped on the inside to offer superior stretch and longer lifetime. Internally, it’s made with an especially engineered quick drying linen that features two layers of fibers on top of each other, woven with a squared pattern design that allows water to flow through it to the oustide and quickly downwards. It’s like pulling water towards the oustide and channeling it downwards so it can dry quickly. We have tested the Fahrenheit in European autumn sunshine, with an air temperature of 20°C, and we got it dry in less than 20 minutes! This special linen also keeps you warmer and longer in the water! Now also available in the hooded version only in 6/4 thick neoprene to be used in real winter waters.
