The Original Winter Boot Mukluk is an Indigenous word for winter boot. Our ancestors created mukluks thousands of years ago to survive and thrive in the coldest places on Earth. Today we’re proud to continue the tradition.

The North American fur trade leads to the birth of a new people – the Métis.

Sean McCormick registers a Canadian corporation and begins manufacturing Indigenous footwear.

Métis entrepreneur Sean McCormick establishes a trading post in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Indigenous artisans trade handmade mukluks and moccasins for Sean’s tanned leather skins and furs.

Manitobah partners with Vibram® to develop a high-abrasion sole for the urban market and launches the Storyboot project to create business-building partnerships with Indigenous elders and artists.

The art of our soles. When it came time to develop footwear for the city, we worked with VibramÂŽ to design a sole that could withstand the effects of cold and high-abrasion urban environments. It also serves as a canvas for Indigenous art and stories. Designed by Heather Endall (Wolf Clan, Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation). Together we build function and tradition into every step.

Turtle Sole A whole circle connects the life energy, yet it is divided to show man and woman, mother and father, the spirit world and the physical world. Throughout the sky, flowing lines represent energy flowing through all beings. Turtle swims towards the prairie grasses that have always sustained life. Legends speak of Turtle Island, a land created when a clump of soil on Turtle’s shell grew into what we now call North America. Markings on Turtle’s back represent the moon cycles.
Tipi Vibram® Sole The Sky represents life-giving water falling as rain and snow. Trees to the left of the tipi represent the Woodland People. To the right are the western mountains. This is the doorway we walk through together as modern hunter-gatherers. Fire tells us our People will always survive. Prairie plains behind are home to the Great Horse and Buffalo People. The swirling Four Winds cleanse as the Sun circles our Mother Earth. 5

Storyboot School Classes in our boardroom and beyond
In 2014 we partnered with Indigenous artisans to offer five-week courses in mukluk and moccasin-making in our Winnipeg boardroom. We called this “The Storyboot School.� In 2015, for the first time, the Storyboot School was offered outside of the Manitobah boardroom. Universities, museums and community organizations embraced the opportunity to host Indigenous-led courses, where students could learn a timeless craft while raising the profile of Indigenous artistry within the public sphere. In 2020, we continue to expand our reach both nationally and locally, offering courses in remote communities and developing a digital archive of instructional videos, accessible to people everywhere. Canada’s First Peoples descended of marriages to Europeans, mainly French. The Métis are one of three officially recognized Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
The Métis People wove floral art patterns into the lives of most tribes on the Northern Plains. These designs became a defining cultural symbol for us. For this reason, the Dakota Sioux and Cree called us the “Flower Beadwork People.” Métis women had always adorned tipis and clothing with geometric beadwork, but the patterns changed when Roman Catholic missions along the St. Lawrence River introduced the Métis to European folk art. By the 1830s, vibrant floral designs were found on most of our products. Floral beadwork reached unrivaled levels of artistry throughout the Red River region during the mid-nineteenth century. About the Artist

Born and raised in Norway House, Cree Nation (population 5000), Rosa Scribe is a soft-spoken and inspirational artist. Having learned the art of handcrafting mukluks from her grandmother, Rosa has spent 25 years perfecting her art. Today, Rosa has become a renowned teacher at University College of the North, instructing ever-expanding classes of students who are learning to make mukluks, moccasins and mitts the traditional way.

Heavily beaded, sinew-sewn deerskin moccasins with wrapped cuff and black velvet apron. Upper has centre seam and T-seam at the back. Apron of black velvet edged in silk thread wrapped around horsehair. Both the apron and the upper are beaded with floral designs. Wrapped cuff has pinked edges and thong is laced through the moccasin upper and then wound around the cuff. Traces remain of the original Stroud cuff in the seam between the moccasin and the cuff.

Unsmoked, moose hide two-piece moccasins with white wool apron and back T-seam. Hide welt around apron. Rabbit fur collar. Decorated with moose hair tufted floral design in red, green and yellow on apron, with green dyed quill stems. Handsewn with dental floss.

Smoked deerskin moccasins decorated in three shades of blue, two shades of yellow, red, gold, white, green and pink beads. Apron of green khaki wool with floral motifs worked in beads. Strip from apron to toe decorated in red silk appliqué and trimmed in beaded linear patterns. Collar of khaki wool decorated in floral patterns of beads, tongue lined in printed floral cotton. Handsewn with sinew.

Smoked moose hide bottom units with deerskin cuffs. “Rabbit nose” front T-seam. Apron tightly beaded with four–petal flower in blue with gold centre, six–petal flower in plum/brown with turquoise centre and bud motif design in garnet, green and pink, all on white ground with green beaded surround and edged with twisted garnet and ecru silk braid. Handsewn.

Pair of mittens attached to each other by way of long hide thong, all decorated with porcupine quill work inpurple, turquoise, orange and fuchsia. Fringe inserted at seams and cuff. Protection: Use a silicon–based leather/suede protector. Do not spray fur, as it contains natural protective oils.

To Clean: Leather can be cleaned using a gentle soap and soft brush. To Dry: Once wet, allow your footwear to dry naturally. Wear: Never pull fur when putting on or removing boot. Cross laces over before tightening to avoid tearing leather eyeholes.
