FUN2KNOW

Two things I really love are learning new stuff and lending a hand to others whenever I can.

When it comes to treats, nothing beats strawberries dipped in chocolate! My mom used to whip them up for me, and they’re just irresistible.

One thing I’m super proud of is getting to explore many different countries. It’s been such an amazing experience!

My mom is my superhero. She’s always been there, fighting tooth and nail to help me and my siblings chase our dreams.

Equipping All Ages for a Bright Future

Growing with Girl Scouts

Meet Addison Franklin, a vibrant 16-year-old from DeSoto Texas, whose journey with Girl Scouts began before she could even tie her shoes. From her pre-K “sproutling” days, too young to be a Daisy, happily tagging along with her troop leader mother and older sister, to blossoming into a Senior Girl Scout today, Addison’s story illustrates the transformative power of Girl Scouts in preparing young women for adulthood.

Beyond the regular troop meetings, Addison is heavily engaged in various additional activities within the program that have helped shape her into the confident, capable young woman she is today. As a member of the Product Sales [cookie] CEO club, she hones her leadership skills alongside her peers, providing feedback on program rewards and initiatives.

Addison’s participation in the Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI), sponsored by Amazon, has been instrumental in forming future business connections in the region. Through immersive experiences like the “Networking and Etiquette” class, she gained valuable professional skills and has been approached by professionals participating in the event who have invite her to apply for internship opportunities at their companies or offer to refer her to other business in her area where they have connections.

Some girls in Addison’s troop enjoy overnight camping trips to Camp Bette Perot and take part in Rainbow Ridge Day Camps. However, not all the girls enjoy being outdoors for long periods of time. Fortunately, Girl Scouts has something to offer for all girls! Because the program is designed to be girl-led in many ways and inclusive of a wide variety of interests, the troop also takes part in many indoor activities to make everyone feel welcome and heard. This shared leadership, under the supervision of their troop leaders, also enables them to work together to decide as a group how to spend money they’ve earned on activities for the whole group.

Girl Scouts “gives a leadership role to girls,” Addison says. “And because we’re always with new girls and new faces, it’s easy to talk [to new people] and not be nervous.”

As a dedicated Girl Scout Cookie entrepreneur, Addison achieved her 2024 sales goal of selling 1,200 boxes of cookies, earning enough program credits to cover $500 of an upcoming reward trip to Japan. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the invaluable leadership opportunities Girl Scouts offer, remarking on her own transformation from a quiet observer to a confident communicator.

“I used to be very, very quiet,” she reflects. “There were girls that were very loud and energetic. I didn’t know I’d become friends with them. And then when we did become friends, I ended up seeing them everywhere.”

Looking ahead, Addison envisions a future brimming with possibilities. Her childhood interest in STEM led to more specific potential career interests in cosmetics, culinary arts, and healthcare.

Some girls may be hesitant to join the program later in their teenage years, but Addison assures that Girl Scouts offers a warm and inclusive environment for all – at any age.

She cites the example of a fellow troop member who joined as a sophomore and quickly found friendship and fulfillment within the group.

Addison’s story showcases the many opportunities Girl Scouts provides for personal growth and development. Whether joining as a kindergartner or a high school student, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas welcomes you to embark on a journey of empowermentand discovery.

Some Mom Advice

As a mom, I’ve always believed in the wisdom passed down through generations. I often find myself reflecting on the teachings of my own parents and grandparents, realizing just how valuable they are in raising my own children. One of my greatest joys is applying these lessons to guide my 15-year-old daughter through life’s ups and downs.

One strategy that has proven effective in our household is negotiation. It’s like finding a balance between giving and receiving. For instance, when my daughter wants to spend time with her friends or desires a special gift, I propose a deal: bring me excellent grades from school. It’s not just about achieving good grades; it’s about instilling a sense of responsibility and hard work. And you know what? It works like magic!

We want her to know that she can come to us with anything, knowing that we will always have her best interests at heart. It’s about being her confidante and advisor, rather than just her accomplice. When she faces challenges or finds herself in difficult situations, we’re there to offer guidance and support until things are resolved

Love is the driving force behind everything we do as parents. Our daughter is our princess, and we cherish every moment we spend with her. Love isn’t just about showering her with affection; it’s about showing her patience, understanding, and unwavering support. It’s about being her rock, her safe haven in a world full of uncertainties.

“Trust is the foundation of our relationship with our daughter. We want her to know that she can come to us with anything, knowing that we will always have her best interests at heart.”

Being a parent, especially during the teenage years, requires a delicate balance between being a firm authority figure and a trusted friend. My husband often jokes about being our daughter’s friend “when she wants us to be her friend.” But in reality, it’s about being there for her, no matter what. It’s about understanding her struggles and offering support, while also providing guidance and boundaries. Trust is the foundation of our relationship with our daughter.

So, fellow moms, let’s continue to embrace the wisdom of our parents and grandparents as we navigate the journey of parenthood. Let’s negotiate, stand firm, and befriend our children, all while building a foundation of trust and love. Because at the end of the day, our children are our greatest treasures, and guiding them through life’s adventures is a privilege we hold dear.

Your Horoscope

Hey there, girl! Get ready for some big cosmic shifts this year! Your sign’s gonna feel the vibes differently, affecting your career, love life, and personal growth big time. ake a moment to breathe and set some goals ‘cause 2023 ended on a rocky note with Mercury’s retrograde messing things up. But don’t sweat it! It’s like hitting the reset button, giving us all a fresh start.

You’re pretty detached from what’s happening sometimes in your life, making you a good judge of what should happen next. If no one is around to tell you what you should be doing, it doesn’t mean you can just do anything you want. Figure it out and all will be good.

Your popularity soars in the next month, so do something that you wouldn’t normally do, and expect stellar results. You should be cautious about new people you meet at school. Are they really who they say they are? Be sure before you agree to anything. The Moon gives you insight that you’ve been waiting for.

Your friends aren’t as in tune with political issues as you are, and that’s OK. If they continue to shut you down when you want to get serious, find an adult to discuss more mature topics whever you feel a need. The Moon makes you feel like you’re swimming against the tide.

You have a plan and you’re sticking to it no matter what anybody says. Life is sometime about extremes. If you can find a partner in crime, the highs will be awesome and the lows will be bearable. Be careful not to judge anyone based solely on what you see. It could take you some time to solve a mystery.

You have to go deep to get to the truth but this new adventure, but anything worth having is worth fighting for. Your friends always want you to go out, but you have family obligations. Do the right thing. Your family really should come first on your priority list.

You worked hard for what you have, so it’s understandable that you don’t want to share it. You’re feeling more charitable, but sometimes giving up your time to help someone is better than throwing money at the problem. If you look back, you’re bound to miss something important that’s right in front of you.

If you aren’t sure about a new situation that just happened, it’s OK to hold back. Jumping right in isn’t your style anyway. You’re a little scattered on new ideas, but you need to find a way to pay attention when someone is telling you some important information. Someone is in a good position to help you.

Learn to let it go. If someone else wants to be in charge, let them. You have the ability to make someone feel good about themselves, so don’t waste that opportunity to build their self-esteem. Remember that building someone else up doesn’t tear you down. It only makes you stronger.

You aren’t the only person in the room, there are others but you’re certainly the most confident. Your strong sense of self-worth continues and allows you to take care of business coming your way. Mowing down your competition might not be your ultimate goal, but you do it anyway!

You aren’t feeling comfortable in new situations and that’s ok. Stick with what you know. The best time to meet new people and explore new places is definitely coming your way, because the Moon gives you a fun sense of adventure. Keep your eye on the prize and your nose to the grindstone.

The world doesn’t revolve around you on Monday - or does it? If you’re going to act like you’re the center of the universe, at least do some good deeds along the way. You feel like you might explode if you don’t express your feelings, but there’s a time and a place for everything.

You want to be, but you don’t have to be rude to people who are trying to help you. “Try to be kind” should be your theme throughout your life, especially when a friend needs your help. You’re feeling a little on the conservative side which might surprise your friends. Use it to your advantage and shine!

PROM

“Don’t forget, it’s your time to shine, to pop off and be you. This is the time when people from school see a newer/different side of you.”

Hey, it’s me again, Vanessa Rosales from Fashion Sense. It’s prom season, and as a senior, it’s a must that I go big this year. I’ve started looking for a dress but have yet to find THE DRESS. I’ve been scouring Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration. It’s not just about finding a dress, but also about finding the perfect shoes, nails, hair, and makeup. It can get quite costly, so instead of getting my hair and makeup done professionally, I’ll do it myself. I’ve been budgeting because senior year can be expensive.

This year, I have a lot of shopping to do—two proms, school dinners, college, and high school graduation. Last year, I found my dress in a week, giving my partner little time to find his suit. This year, I strive to have it two weeks before the big night. So, I’ve started looking now. I think it’s a fun experience to try on dresses with all your girlfriends. Similarly, getting ready with your girls on the day of prom is a bittersweet moment. Making as many memories as possible with your friends is crucial in senior year.

There are many types of dresses. I think pastel colors are very common this year, especially pink. There are many designs that are newly popular and others that are making a comeback, such as glitter, high slits, ruf-

fles, low cuts, and open backs, which have been very popular lately. I think my favorite trend must be the open back and slit. Long dresses are a must at prom; usually, homecoming is the dance where we gals wear short dresses. Long ballgowns or mermaid dresses are what you usually ask for when prom dress shopping. Having a good pair of heels that you trust and have practiced walking in is a must. Make sure to carry an extra pair of shoes for after prom, preferably something that sort of matches your dress.

Don’t forget, it’s your time to shine, to pop off and be you. This is the time when people from school see a newer/different side of you. Last year, I enjoyed seeing everyone’s own style. Prom night is the night you’re going to be talking about for years. Dance like no one is watching. Don’t forget to make many memories that night and enjoy and savor every moment of you being a teenage girl.
