Artist's Statement Roberta Ahrens Lamos Petaluma, California

I have always had an affinity for the shapes, forms and colors in nature. In the beginning of my creative path I studied ornamental horticulture. I’m interested in the beauty of natural structure, it’s balance, and how one shape or form plays against the other and the power of its color.

I have a professional background in murals and decorative painting.

Working on a large scale has always been easy for me. With these botanical paintings, I hunt for the image in nature with my camera, then, I decide which image to bring to the canvas. Once the image has been found, I create a special canvas of thick plaster embedded into fabric. This is left to dry and crack. Once the image is painted on the “cracked linen” I take my favorite tool and carve in the details and abstractness.

One of the influences that fuels my desire to paint, is that I love seeing people excited about my work and knowing that somehow it affects them.

There is a certain balance in the feeling of the piece that works. It’s a feeling that is immediate. It’s right now, bright, intense and happy.
