IN LOVING MEMORY OF NACY GALLANT Ronald (Nacy) Gallant! The man, the myth, the legend! We lost a dear friend back on June 17th, 2020, but his legacy and spirit will continue to shine endlessly, and although he is no longer physically with us, his contributions and his impact on all of us, will never be forgotten. Just over 20 years ago, I was one of those fortunate people who had the privilege of crossing paths with Nacy. As an aside, I keep using the name “Nacy”, because for the last 20+ years I never knew his real name to be Ronald, I guess that is part of the mythical, legendary side of Nacy!! Nacy at the time I met him, was running a league called CANFIR, where I was first introduced to curling. Nacy and his wife, Barbara were active members of the Montreal West Curling Club (MWCC), and Nacy held many different titles at the club over the years. Little did I know on that Sunday after having met Nacy, we were about to embark on a journey together. To know Nacy, is to know someone who was passionate, ambitious, charismatic, and always ready to lend his support. When Kurling for Kids (K4K) came knocking at the door of MWCC, the first person to open that door was Nacy. Nacy introduced K4K to MWCC, and with that he set off on his campaign of helping sick kids and to help grow K4K. Nacy was the catalyst for the growth of K4K at MWCC, always pushing the envelope, and he always had a surprise in his back pocket, that would help K4K achieve their financial goals. Over the years, Nacy helped grow the K4K event to 24 teams and 6 draws running the entire day, and year over year breaking the club fundraising objectives. He had this way of recruiting his organizing committee and bringing in new individuals year after year. His dedication towards K4K was undaunted because even when Nacy was in the hospital, he was still following K4K and making calls and sending instructions. Nacy even made a special guest appearance at the last live K4K event in 2019. In his own unique and special way, Nacy set us on a path for success all because a gentleman by the name of Nacy tapped us on the shoulder and asked for our support. LETTRE DU PRÉSIDENT PRESIDENT’S LETTER Cette année, Curling pour les enfants honorent (encore une fois) ses superhéros. Qu’arriverait-il si on rassemblait nos pouvoirs pour être plus fort ensemble? Nous pouvons travailler pour créer un monde dans lequel les enfants peuvent être que ça: des enfants. Alors nous vous invitons à aider Curling pour les enfants à voler plus haut que jamais en étant des héros, tous les jours. 2020 et 2021 ont été des années difficiles pour tous, mais je suis vraiment impressioné par la générosité et la persévérance de nos membres à donner au prochain. Lors d’une année que nous aurions pu abaisser nos attentes, nous avons pousser plus fort et atteint plus haut. J’aimerais exprimer mon appréciation à tous les membres du comité Curling pour les enfants et tous les bénévoles de chacun des clubs. J’aimerais également remercier tous les commanditaires qui ont encore une fois démontré leur grande générosité en nous aidant à atteindre des objectifs inimaginables. Et surtout, n’oublions pas tous les participants et amasseurs de fonds. Sans vous tous, Curling pour les enfants n’existerait pas, et notre fondation est un succès sans précédent grâce à tous vos efforts, votre travail acharné et votre bienveillance.

This year, Kurling for Kids is (still) honoring its superheroes. What if we all came together and combined our powers to be stronger together? We can work towards creating a world in which kids can be just that: kids. We invite you to help Kurling for Kids fly higher than ever before by being heroes, every day. 2020 and 2021 have been difficult years for all but I am so impressed by the generosity and determination of our members to give back. In a year that would have been understandable to lower our expectations, we pushed harder and reached higher. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to all members of the K4K Committee and all of the volunteers at each club. I would also like to thank all our corporate sponsors who have come through once again to help us reach fundraising amounts we never imagined possible. And most importantly, let’s not forget all of the participants and fundraisers. We have finally completed funding the Monteris NeuroBlate MRI System neurosurgical laser with our 2020 event! Kurling for Kids has finalized the long-term funding of a new, state-of-the-art neurosurgical laser called the Monteris NeuroBlate MRI System. The NeuroBlate System employs diode laser energy delivered via a gas-cooled fiber-optic probe, which allows safe targeting and selective ablation of soft tissue and lesions in the brain, including some that may have traditionally been deemed “inoperable”. This allows to operate the brain without touching the unaffected areas surrounding the epileptic lesion or tumor and thus, protects the neurodevelopment of the child, which is the main mission of the Integrated Center Network in Neurodevelopment of the Child (CIRENE). In other words, the device allows a neurosurgeon to see the tumor live on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. Côut total : $600 000 sur 4 ans

Grâce à vous, le Children a acquis un chariot pour voies respiratoires difficiles, dont il avait urgemment besoin, pour le département d’anesthésie. Cet outil qui permet de sauver des vies est principalement utilisé dans les cas où le patient doit subir une intervention chirurgicale qui nécessite l’insertion précise et délicate d’un tube respiratoire. De plus, vous avez rendu possible l’ajout d’un physiothérapeute pour la réadaptation des patients ayant subi des traumatismes cérébraux. Despite a difficult and unusual year, K4K overcame many challenges through sheer persistence and creativity. We are very grateful for this continued support of the Children’s. K4K’s impact is felt in every corner of the Hospital! Thanks to you, the Children’s acquired an urgently needed difficult airway cart for the anesthesia department. This life-saving tool is used primarily in cases where a young patient must undergo surgery requiring the precise and delicate placement of a breathing tube. Furthermore you have made possible an additional physiotherapist for the rehabilitation of patients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. Thank you to the organizing committee, sponsors, donors and participants for your generosity and commitment to making the tournament’s 23rd edition another great success. MONTREAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL WHAT WE’RE GIVING

Difficult Airway Cart (DAW) These carts contain specialized intubation equipment to assist the physician in emergency situations whereby the patient may have an anomaly in the trachea, making it difficult to pass the breathing tube. As a result of prematurity or anomalies of the airway, many infants and children require specialized intubation scopes and intubation equipment to introduce a breathing tube – the lifeline of the patient – prior to anesthesia. However, with the increasing number of ENT (ear, nose & throat) surgeons, it’s becoming more urgent for the Hospital to add to its fleet and better serve the needs of its patients. The Montreal Children’s Hospital has asked K4K to commit for the multi-year funding (2 years) of the Difficult Airway Cart. Total cost : $300,000 over 2 years

The addition of one full time (FTE) physiotherapist The Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) Program with its Concussion Clinic is a tertiary care ambulatory program that is in keeping with this designation. The current complement of two (2) physiotherapists, who are integral members of the MTBI team, is no longer sufficient to keep up with the increasing volume of patients. The addition of one full time (FTE) physiotherapist would have an immediate and dramatic effect on the number of patients being treated and the quality of care. Among other things, the physiotherapist plays a key role in clearing patients for return to sports and other recreational activities. The Montreal Children’s Hospital has asked K4K to commit for the multi-year funding (3 years) for the addition of one full time (FTE) physiotherapist for 3 years. Total cost : $300,000 over 3 years

CHU SHERBROOKE CE QUE NOUS DONNONS

Appareils acquis en 2020 pour l’Hôpital Fleurimont En 2020, le montant amassé par Curling pour les enfants a permis à la Fondation du CHUS de financer l’achat de deux appareils PNI et de trois balances à quatre décimales pour le service de pédiatrie de l’Hôpital Fleurimont. Les appareils PNI servent à mesurer la pression artérielle, la saturation d’oxygène et le pouls des patients. L’acquisition de ces appareils concorde avec l’ouverture imminente d’un nouveau Centre mère-enfant à Sherbrooke qui offrira d’importantes améliorations au niveau des traitements offerts aux jeunes patients. En ce sens, l’ajout d’appareils PNI permettra une meilleure planification des soins. De son côté, la balance à quatre décimales sert à suivre les patients en nutrition. Les bébés sont très fragiles et l’administration des aliments et des suppléments alimentaires doit être faite avec une rigueur et une minutie absolues. Cet appareil permet au personnel hospitalier de peser avec une grande précision les aliments ou les suppléments alimentaires qui doivent être administrés aux tout-petits.

Financement d’équipement pour les transports de Néonatologie et Pédiatrie inter hospitalier Appareil I-stat L’appareil I-stat est un appareil qui permet d’analyser le sang des enfants gravement malades que nous allons chercher avec nos équipes de transports inter hospitalier pédiatriques et néonataux. Ces analyses peuvent se faire au chevet de l’enfant (incluant dans l’ambulance) ce qui nous permet d’avoir le résultat plus rapidement. Les résultats nous permettent d’ajuster nos traitements et d’assurer la meilleure prise en charge à ces enfants qui seront transportés vers une unité de soins intensifs. Coût unitaire = 14 000$

Chers amis, En mon nom et au nom de toute l’équipe de la Fondation du CHUS, félicitations pour votre belle initiative. C’est un honneur de compter sur la contribution de l’équipe de Curling pour les enfants dans notre belle ville qu’est Sherbrooke. Nous en sommes très reconnaissants. La pédiatrie est un département qui touche l’ensemble de la population, et nous sommes toujours ravis de voir des partenaires soutenir les enfants de notre région. Tout le monde connaît un enfant qui pourrait nécessiter des soins un jour ou l’autre. La pertinence de soutenir les projets de cette spécialité dans nos deux hôpitaux de Sherbrooke prend tout son sens considérant que la cause des enfants nous tient particulièrement à coeur à la Fondation du CHUS. La première édition à Sherbrooke a eu lieu en 2020. Le tournoi de curling a malheureusement dû être annulé à cause de la pandémie de la COVID-19 et des mesures sanitaires l’entourant. Malgré tout, vous avez réussi à amasser 17 000 $ qui ont été remis à la Fondation du CHUS et qui ont permis l’achat de matériel pour le service de pédiatrie de l’Hôpital Fleurimont. C’est exceptionnel comme don dans les circonstances actuelles! Mon équipe et moi tenons à remercier du fond du coeur toute l’équipe de Curling pour les enfants ainsi que tous les donateurs qui font une différence dans la vie de milliers d’enfants en Estrie. Plusieurs projets prometteurs en pédiatrie sont encore à financer, et nous sommes chanceux de pouvoir compter sur l’appui de votre équipe pour la santé de nos tout-petits. Merci! WELCOME TO THE KURLING FOR KIDS FAMILY TO THE

STOLLERY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION & SICKKIDS HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Funding for the Garron Family Cancer Centre and the SickKids Hospital Kurling for Kids has committed to directing all funds raised in Toronto through Kurling for Kids to the general needs of the Garron Family Cancer Centre (GFCC). SickKids sees a new cancer patient every day. The Garron Family Cancer Centre (GFCC) is the largest pediatric oncology center in Canada and our support of the GFCC contributes to the Centre’s vision for better outcomes for children with cancer, through collaboration, innovation, and discovery.

Funding services for 24/7 Mental Health Support for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Kurling for Kids has committed our first year of funding to be added to the 5 year project for Mental Health Support for the Stollery Children’s Hospital. This project is an overall 5 year commitment of $6.5 million from multiple donors. As our first year of fundraising will have unknown results, we have chosen to dedicate all funds raised by the Edmonton region of K4K to this very deserving project. To help close some of the gaps that exist when it comes to accessing vital child and adolescent mental health care, SCH have launched a five-year fundraising campaign to bring integrated, clinical mental health services to the Stollery Emergency department. This expanded care model will eventually deliver round-the-clock, expert pediatric mental health services in the moment of crisis and will include specialized bedside support for kids and adolescents who present with mental health concerns. For mental health service providers to get a firm understanding of the type of care required, they must meet directly with children and youth, and their family members. The emergency room is not an ideal location. Juliette a 7 ans. Jusqu’à l’année dernière, elle pouvait faire de 10 à 12 crises d’épilepsie par jour. Une situation critique qui, depuis sa naissance, assombrissait toutes les sphères de son développement. Grâce au laser neurochirurgical, un équipement de pointe acquis grâce à votre générosité, les experts du CHU Sainte-Justine ont retiré en 2019 la masse de tissu qui était à l’origine de ses crises. Logée entre son hypothalamus et ses nerfs optiques, la pseudo-tumeur affectait le fonctionnement global de son cerveau de manière importante. Depuis son opération, Juliette a retrouvé sa vie. Sa vraie.

ÉVÉNEMENT VIRTUEL VIRTUAL TOURNAMENT Bien qu’il n’y ait pas de tournoi de curling cette année, nous devons encore amasser des fonds pour les hôpitaux pour enfants. Nous avons donc décidé d’organiser un tournoi virtuel. Qu’est-ce qu’un tournoi de curling virtuel? Ce sera un tournoi où les gagnants seront choisis au hasard parmi toutes les équipes inscrites dans le tournoi de manière amusantes et uniques et où les fans pourront regarder en ligne dans le confort de leur maison! Le 10 avril, les spectateurs se sont joints à nous devant leur écran pour encourager les équipes dans l’espoir de gagner le tout! Les matchs ont été «joués» le jour de l’événement via Facebook Live et nos hôtes incroyables, Christine Tourigny et Stan Fong, ont célébré la journée avec les spectateurs qui sont venus encourager les joueurs, équipes, amis et famille. Félicitations aux Infinity Stones qui ont gagné première place! Il y a eu un tirage moitié-moitié, ainsi que des concours variés tout au long de la journée, tout comme nos événements réguliers! Plusieurs participants ont pris l’opportunité d’acheter des bières, hot-dogs et hamburgers virtuels pour un ami. Nous espèrons pouvoir se réunir l’année prochaine sur la glace, mais jusqu’à ce que ce soit possible, nous avons tout de même amassé 2514.36$ en une journée! Continuons comme cela!

Although there was no physical curling tournament this year, we still needed to raise money for the children’s hospitals, so we decided to go virtual. What exactly was our virtual curling event? It was a tournament where winners were randomly picked from all registered teams in tournament style in fun, different ways and fans watched online in the comfort of their home! On April 10th, viewers gathered around their screens to cheer on their teams in hopes to win the grand title! All games were broadcast on game day via Facebook Live and our amazing hosts Christine Tourigny and Stan Fong were joined by viewers who came to encourage players, teams, family and friends. Congratulations to the Infinity Stones who won first place! There was also a 1/2 and 1/2 draw, as well as other assorted contests throughout the day, just as there would have been at our regular events, so it was tons of fun for all who joined. Many participants took the opportunity to buy virtual beers, hot-dogs and burgers for a friend. Hopefully next year we can all get together on the ice, but until then, we were still able to raise $2514.36 the day of! Let’s keep going!

Dans une année qui a été difficile pour tout le monde, nous ne pouvons pas vous remercier assez et nous sommes tellement reconnaissants d’avoir pu amasser autant d’argent en 2020. Cela démontre vraiment notre résilience et notre générosité de donner aux autres, même en période difficile. Même si ce n’était pas le montant monumental de 500 000$ que nous visions, nous aidons tout de même les enfants et nous allons revenir en force et viser encore plus haut en 2021.

In a year that was difficult for everyone, we cannot begin to express our gratitude and we are so amazed we were able to raise as much money in 2020. It truly shows our resilience and generosity to give back even in times of hardship. So although it was not the monumental $500,000 we were aiming for, we are still helping children and we will bounce back and reach even higher in 2021.
