Thinking BIG this autumn...

As we bid a fond farewell to summer, the evenings are already starting to draw in, and we turn our thoughts to preparing our gardens, allotments and spaces for autumn. Here at The Conservation Volunteers however, autumn means only one thing – the most exciting weekend of our year – October’s Big Green Weekend!

We’re working flat out to make this the biggest, greenest and most exciting BGW yet – so make sure you’re a part of it on the weekend of 4-7 October!

If you’re happy and you know it, you’re a gardener!

We’re a cheerful bunch here at The Conservation Volunteers, particularly now that it’s official – gardening really makes you happier!

A recent BBC Gardener’s World survey confirms that gardeners are healthier and more fulfilled than non-gardeners. The survey of 1,500 people in the UK found gardeners have a more positive outlook on life, with 93% of people believing it improves their mood.

TCV wins Silver at BBC Gardener’s World Live!

We’re so proud that TCV’s show garden was awarded silver by judges at BBC Gardener’s World in June! Our garden, designed by Debra Nixon (see photo) and assembled by TCV volunteers, showcased how a small residential plot can promote healthy eating and exercise. It’s a fantastic achievement – congratulations to Debra and her team and thanks to Mondelēz International Foundation for their generous support.

On solid ground with RBS! Transforming Pex Hill!

At The Conservation Volunteers, we’re incredibly proud of our continued and growing partnership with Royal Bank of Scotland through our innovative Employee Action Day programmes. Each year hundreds of RBS staff discover untapped personal capabilities and team skills, while helping people and communities reclaim green places together.

David Salthouse, Manager, RBS Group Sustainability, recently told us; “TCV’s Employee Activity Days provide a valuable element to our employee volunteering programme. Activities are tailored to the needs of the teams and organised with a minimum amount of effort from the team’s point of view. Not only do they bring people together in a non-office setting but they also provide real insight into environmental issues in a practical way and raise awareness amongst our employees of the work performed by TCV. “Engagement and satisfaction scores are very positive following these events as employees feel they have made a real contribution to their local environment. From a partnership perspective we are pleased to work with TCV as we know that the events will be managed efficiently and provide value for money for the teams.”

Pex Hill Country Park in Merseyside was a disused quarry which has become a haven for wildlife, boasting a small fossilized beach and now home to some locally rare flora. Recently, a TCV Employee Action Day team from Balfour Beatty Workplace, worked in two groups alongside our regular volunteers with one group focusing on heathland and the other on the access to footpaths. The heathland group significantly boosted the site’s biodiversity action plan by transplanting foxgloves and self seeded trees into wooded areas of the site. Foxgloves were also planted to create a wildlife garden and the woodlands restocked with a more diverse species of trees.

Works on the footpaths have seen a vital enhancement of disabled accessibility to the site, with the construction of 120m of footpath, shifting 8 tons of stone; a mighty task – fortunately the rain held off!

Balfour Beatty’s enthusiastic team enjoyed the hard graft, knowing they’ve made a significant contribution to the park’s future for the entire community.

Marie Porter – a life in volunteering

Our volunteers mean everything to us at TCV and we’ve been so proud to celebrate their hard work and dedication during National Volunteers Week this summer. We want to say a massive THANK YOU! to each and every one of our volunteers – we simply couldn’t do it without you!

We’re absolutely ecstatic that the BBC News featured TCV in a news item highlighting the recent BBC Gardener’s World survey linking happiness with gardening. It is with tremendous sadness that we note the passing of Marie Porter – a TCV volunteer – in her home of Preston for over 20 years. Marie dedicated herself to TCV, receiving many volunteer awards including a special one from Prince Philip. Her daughter June said: “It was mum’s total passion in life – she absolutely loved TCV, nature and conservation”.

Matthew’s prospects take to the skies!

The Conservation Volunteer’s partnership with Derbyshire Youth Mandatory Action Project (DYMAP) is helping young people get into rewarding work through volunteering. For Matthew, (pictured right, with saw) participation has seen his prospects soar, since being offered a support role with the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance Service.

Matthew told us:

“Without the help and support from TCV and DYMAP, I would not have had this opportunity and I’m really enjoying my role.”

Helping people back into work was a priority for Marya and David Marriott when they opened a new licensed café in Swindon, so they turned to us for advice.

TCV provided suitable candidates, and the use of a room to conduct interviews. Subsequently, several applicants have been offered jobs. Marya and David said:

Run like a Wolf!

On 7 September, 22 lupine adventurers challenged their wild side in the TCV Wolf Run. Teams of courageous wolfpacks and solo runners took to the wilds of Warwickshire to raise money for TCV’s vital work with people and spaces. The runners coped with a gruelling 10k run on open ground, woodland, lakes and lots and lots of mud! We’ve been overwhelmed with demand, so register now for the April 2014 Wolf Run – places are filling up fast! Oasis in the concrete jungle!

It’s possible to grow food just about anywhere, as 53 resourceful volunteers are demonstrating – crafting a new food-growing garden at the Oasis Sports Centre in Holborn, Central London in partnership with Greenwich Leisure Ltd and the London Borough of Camden. Despite battling dreadful spring weather to get it completed, the new garden, situated in an under-used area behind the sports centre, will now be managed by the Oasis Garden Green Gym to become a productive community food growing space. Sessions run every week and anyone can volunteer, so why not join in this autumn? www.tcv.org.uk/oasis

Barnet Green Gym opens!

TCV have been awarded a £24,000 grant from the Big Society Innovation Bank to develop a new Green Gym at West Hendon Playing Fields in Barnet. Gym-goers will sow wildflower meadows, plant native trees and create new wildlife habitats as part of plans to transform the Playing Fields for the whole community. Barnet Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Dean Cohen, said: “This is an exciting and worthwhile project which I hope makes its mark in Barnet.” Contact: www.tcv.org.uk/barnet and join in!

Skelton Grange’s surprise VIP guest Staff at TCV Skelton Grange are accustomed to visitors, but rarely as distinguished as Vice President of Zambia, Guy Scott! Mr. Scott, a passionate conservationist, was fascinated by the work staff and volunteers have done and said; “Whether in Lusaka or Leeds, it’s crucial to preserve natural spaces in urban areas so children do not grow up having never stood under a tree canopy or played on grass.” www.tcv.org.uk/skeltongrange

The Big Green Weekend is back!

The Big Green Weekend is TCV’s biggest weekend of conservation action, where we showcase the tremendous work our staff and volunteers do – all across the UK. Last October’s Big Green Weekend was huge: thousands of people from all over the country got outdoors, got involved, and learnt how they could make a difference in their own communities and green spaces, but most importantly – had a great time!

There were activities for all ages: visitors learned dry stone walling and built wildlife habitats. In Kent, kids got messy making bird feeders and fat balls to put in their gardens; in Staffordshire there was face painting and snail racing and in Scotland, children got to try their hands at pond dipping. Above all, everyone joined in and felt great!

Sounds brilliant, doesn’t it? Well, The Big Green Weekend is back, bigger than ever, from Friday 4th to Monday 7th October, so you can join in and feel good this Autumn!

Josh Sutton’s Smokey bonfire pasta Chef and guyrope gourmet Josh Sutton shares one of his seasonal favourites This recipe was first described to me by fellow camper and dear friend Rob. I love his description of ‘quality’ smoked bacon, which truly demonstrates an appreciation of good food; “really good smoked bacon should have yellow fat approaching the colour of straw, the meat should be more purple than pink, it should be dry to the touch and it should make your car smell like a garden in November, like someone’s burning autumn leaves”. This dish has become a firm favourite at home as well as in the tent.

A great time saving device for preparing a fresh tomato sauce is to halve the tomatoes and rough-grate them, cut side on to the grater, leaving only the skin behind. Gone are the days of steeping them in boiling water!

Ingredients to feed four: 12 rashers of smoked streaky bacon 8 tomatoes (the size and colour of snooker balls) A sprig of fresh thyme 3 cloves of chopped garlic 1 teaspoon of paprika Half teaspoon of smoked paprika A glug of olive oil A lump of grated Applewood smoked cheddar Dried pasta of your choice Lay out the bacon in a large frying pan, with just a splash of olive oil. Cook on a low heat until crispy and the fat is the colour of amber. Remove the rashers from the pan and allow them to cool down.

Into the frying pan add the chopped garlic and cook gently for two or three minutes. As soon as the garlic begins to colour, add the thyme, the paprika and grate in the halved tomatoes. Stir it through to make a rich vermilion sauce.

Bring a large pan of salted water to boil for the pasta. Keep simmering the sauce gently for the time it takes to cook the pasta.

When the pasta is nearly ready, snap the cooked bacon into small pieces and add to the tomato sauce and stir it until heated through. Drain the pasta and plate up, cover with the sauce and a generous garnish of the smoked cheddar. Don’t eat this dish wearing a white shirt!

Landscaping the future

Discovering you have a calling has been a catalyst for many successful careers, so when William Goddard finished his recent ‘Steps to Work’ placement with TCV Northern Ireland, he discovered he had a real aptitude for soft landscaping.

William immediately decided to continue as a volunteer to gain a full landscaping qualification – assisting a project on the grounds of Rock Castle in Portstewart. Now, as his skills grow, William’s employment opportunities can only blossom too!

Scouts go wild in Gortin Glens!

TCV and Omagh Explorer Scouts united in the Gortin Glens, Northern Ireland, for a challenging weekend of open-air activities, aimed at teaching them outdoor and conservation skills and the importance of helping others. Scouts assisted the TCV Owenkillew Development Group clear scrub and invasive immature trees to help transform their plot into a community allotment and nature garden. Thanks to the group’s hard work and enthusiasm, TCV Owenkillew’s plans to make Gortin a local centre for horticulture have taken root!

Big space for wee tots!

Woodacre Nursery in Glasgow has an extensive new play and planting area thanks to the nearby TCV Green Gym, with funding from ‘Awards for All’.

Toddlers will now enjoy an outdoor classroom and storytelling area so there’s space aplenty for learning as well as play – there’s even a turf snake! Anna Hamilton, Volunteer Development Officer, tells us:

“It’s lovely to see the wee ones scampering about all the different features having so much fun.”

Novice swimmers show mettle in Coniston

Recording biodiversity Citizen Science is where scientific research and the public engage at ground level; volunteers gather data vital to protecting and improving our environment. The core message of Citizen Science is that everyone can help record and classify the biodiversity within their communities.

TCV recently organised a Citizen Science training day for delegates at Redhall Walled Garden in Edinburgh. Stevie Jarron from TCV Scotland told us: “The information gathered through Citizen Science contributes to the bigger picture of our wildlife knowledge and can help shape our conservation priorities, both locally and nationally.”

Three novice swimmers from Barrow-in-Furness completed a challenging 500 metre swim in Coniston Water for The Conservation Volunteers.

The first-time-trio were supported by TCV staff who organised training sessions and also took part. Marley, Jordan and Izaak are recent recruits to TCV’s CLIP project supporting 16-25 year olds across Cumbria. CLIP project manager Charlotte Robinson said: “Completing the swim has given them a great sense of achievement and a brilliant introduction to volunteering.”

Tim’s 400 candles!

Our volunteers never cease to amaze us, and recently, Tim Madariola achieved a magnificent landmark – his 400th TCV project day. Tim joined TCV’s Croydon group in 2009 and has hardly missed a day since. Dave Johnson, Croydon Project officer said: “Tim’s gained skills and confidence since he joined and has become an important part of the team.” Having shared his celebratory cake with fellow volunteers Tim’s looking forward to his next goal – his 500th project day!

Honey has them dancing in the streets!

Helston Flora Day is an ancient spring festival where revellers dance through the streets from dawn through the picturesque Cornwall town. Honey, a stalwart TCV Volunteer of 10 years, raised £100 for us selling Lily of the Valley buttonholes from her own garden to participants.

Bushcraft Play Scheme

TCV Skelton Grange hosted more brilliant ways for kids to get off the sofa and into the wild this summer, with two new Bushcraft events.

‘Bushcraft – Into the Wilderness’ were two-day camping events for 10-14 year olds encompassing outdoor skills, games, crafts and general mayhem in the woods. ‘Skelton Rangers’ was about getting outside – all day, every day.

5-day activities included games, walks, fire lighting, crafts, den building, nature study and camp cooking.

Guess who we bumped into?

What are you looking forward to this autumn?

A lot of my border plants are growing into each other, so I will dig everything up and replant for next year. I’ll do this as early as possible to avoid disturbing hibernating wildlife, while creating areas for insects to overwinter.

Your top tip to encourage wildlife into our gardens no matter where we live?

No matter what size your plot, ensure mammals and other wildlife can travel easily between gardens. Hedgehogs travel great distances at night in search of food and a mate, and if they can’t they're forced onto the road.

Kate makes a new friend

We recently met up with gardener, journalist, wildlife advocate and author Kate Bradbury and talked about her twin passions of gardening and wildlife...

What inspired you down the 'wildlife gardener' path?

I've always been passionate about gardening for wildlife. It’s something I’ve done since childhood and I love it! It seemed like a natural progression from Gardener's World to write a book. If we work together, we could create the UK's biggest nature reserve – creating homes for wildlife in our gardens!

Your highlight of summer 2013?

Finding hundreds of peacock caterpillars in a clump of nettles. Butterflies have had it tough for the last few years, due to poor weather and habitat loss. But this year the sunshine has helped them bounce back!

Why do you think gardening has such a positive impact on wellbeing?

We evolved with the land, we belong outside. I’m never happier than when I’m in my garden. Gardening keeps us active, helps us interact with the seasons, connects us with nature and wildlife. It’s good for us!

Your ultimate 'great green adventure'?

I’d love to see Borneo before the rainforest is completely destroyed and the orang-utans are made extinct…
