THE RESIDENCE Engaged by a multi-generational pair of clients, I was tasked with creating a harmonious side-by-side living residence. The site is nestled in the beach-side town of Lewisham, Tasmania, where the clients secured a recently subdivided lot, strategically set back from the street and neighbouring homes. This unique property offers an open expanse of grassed and lightly treed land, boasting a captivating view of Tiger Head Bay while maintaining privacy. The clients envisioned a multi-generational dwelling that would accommodate their evolving family needs. The underlying concept for the project was to create a generational living space where family members could reside side by side, fostering close connections but still maintain independance. In the future, the daughter will transition into the main house, and the unit will serve as a rental property to support the family's evolving needs. The clients, who presented their initial design with budget constraints, collaborated closely. Together, we refined and simplified their concept, rationalizing the programming, optimized the overall building footprint and reduced the probable construction costs. Then a proportion of those cost savings were reinvested in elevating the quality of design, fixtures, and finishes. The result, the primary residence was meticulously cared for, with simple and modest design, featuring an expansive open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, seamlessly integrated with a thoughtfully designed study nook. Two private bedrooms, a separate bathroom, and laundry area conveniently tucked away from the main living spaces. The grandeur of this spacous open plan living extended to a generous deck, perfect for indulging in ocean views, entertaining guests and bbq`s. Adjoining the main house stands a self-contained unit, complete with a single bedroom and a walk-in robe. The open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area provide a cozy retreat for its occupants. Essentially, a smaller version of the main house. To support work/life balance, the property incorporated an artist's studio, allowing for creative endeavours and working from home. The property also offers the convenience of a double carport, kept open to incease trasparency and allow the new landscaping to embrace on all sides. Development Approval received with few changes required. The final result is a modest and careful tailored solution; a contemporary interpretation of the Tasmanian traditional farmhouse.
