The results of that collaboration speak for themselves: a simple comparison with any city in the region shows better we’ve become because of it. I have great faith that our community will again come together to build upon that foundation.

This season also brings so many chances to reconnect in person: Chatt Hills Porchfest in Serenbe, the Fall Festival at City Hall, and all the gatherings that remind us why we chose to call this place home. Every handshake, smile, and real-world conversation helps us build the kind of city that just can’t be created from behind a keyboard.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the passing of Bonnie Goode, a beloved community member, civic booster, and friend. Bonnie’s love for this place and her tireless support for its people will be deeply missed, but her legacy of kindness, service, and commitment will continue to inspire us all.

Thank you, as always, for caring about Chattahoochee Hills, for showing up, for listening, and for helping make this community a beautiful model of what small cities can be when neighbors work together.

Announcing the 54th addition to the Chatt Hills Barn Quilt Trail, featuring “Deer in the Woods” at the Johnson Homeplace, located at 12445 Whiteside Rd, Chattahoochee Hills, GA 30213 (Barn quilt is on their fence).

Lee and Rhonda Johnson are the kind of couple who’d rather fall asleep to a whip-poor-will’s song than to the hum of city traffic.

Back in 1998, their search for a quiet place to call home led them to Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia, where they settled deep in the countryside and built a log cabin that feels like it grew straight from the woods around it, warm, sturdy, and perfectly at peace with nature.

When it came time to choose a pattern for their barn quilt, Rhonda picked “Deer in the Woods” by MontgomeryGraphix, a fitting tribute to the gentle wildlife that wanders through their property each day.

Lee & Rhonda Johnson…Rooted in Nature Lee and Rhonda Johnson both grew up on farms not far from Chattahoochee Hills, where the fields and forests became their first classrooms. Lee was an avid bowhunter who could read the woods like a good book, each track and rustle telling a story. His fascination with wildlife led him to study taxidermy while still in high school. Rhonda was just as at home outdoors, often spending her afternoons sending arrow after arrow toward a target until her arms ached and her aim was true. Fate stepped in one day when Rhonda brought her dog to the local veterinarian—Lee’s father, who was as much a matchmaker as a

healer. When Lee and Rhonda finally met, it was like two rivers joining; their shared love of nature flowed easily into something deeper.

As the years rolled on, Rhonda attended college in South Carolina, where her curiosity about life’s building blocks led her into cytology—the microscopic world of human cells. Lee apprenticed under a master taxidermist, honing his craft until he opened his own shop, Uniques Taxidermy, in Fairburn, Georgia. Before long, the couple married, started a family, and began dreaming of a place where their roots could run deep.

They found it in Chattahoochee Hills, a stretch of land wrapped in trees and quiet, just a few miles from where they’d grown up. There they built a log cabin that feels more like it grew from the earth than was built upon it, a place where wind in the pines hums along with their laughter. Rhonda homeschooled their three children—Jason, Kel, and Summer—turning their backyard into both classroom and playground. Science lessons took place under the open sky, where the kids studied nature by living it. They grew vegetables, raised animals, and learned that hard work and wonder often walk hand in hand. they swapped gym shoes for fishing poles and archery bows, learning skills that stitched them even closer to the land and to each other.

Those lessons clearly took root. Jason carried his steady hands and big heart into dentistry, running his own practice and using his gifts to help others, both at home and on mission trips abroad. Kel followed his love of adventure from the ball field to the clouds, earning his wings as a pilot and teaching others to fly with the same calm confidence he learned growing up in the woods. And Summer, always full of cheerful determination, found her calling in caring for others—first as a volleyball captain during college, and now as a critical-care unit nurse, where her compassion runs as deep as her courage.

That courage showed itself early. When Summer was twelve, she was at a baseball game cheering on her brother Kel during a Team USA tryout when a foul ball struck her in the eye—a tragedy that would test the family’s strength.

During that frightening moment, Hall of Fame Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, who was seated just behind her, rushed to help. Weeks later, he made a surprise trip all the way to their cabin in Chatt Hills for his 86th birthday, to visit the young girl whose spirit had inspired him.

Today, the Johnsons’ log cabin still stands among the whispering woods—a living scrapbook filled with memories, laughter, and love. Their six grandchildren now roam the same paths their parents once did, chasing butterflies and stories. For Lee and Rhonda, home isn’t just where they live—it’s part of who they are. In Chatt Hills, their hearts beat in rhythm with the land they love.

The Dirty Sheets Gravel Grinder The Dirty Sheets Gravel Grinder put on by MTB Atlanta, who maintains most of the trail system in our city's Cochran Mill Park, was held Oct. 12. Benefiting storm relief for western Carolina and eastern Tennessee, the Gravel Grinder consists of 60/40 dirt to paved road race. The finish line featured a bonfire for the folks gathered in the early morning chill who preferred to observe rather than peddle. Food trucks provided lunch as well.

OUR COMMUNITY Placemaking the Future: How Chattahoochee Hills is Turning Vision into Place

The project includes a new handcrafted sign, solar lighting, and landscaping improvements, all built with donated materials and community labor. A vibrant barn quilt – painted by local artist Laurie Searle – will soon adorn the façade, linking Cedar Grove to the region’s expanding Barn Quilt Trail. These enhancements, costing under $500, symbolize something far greater: how thoughtful design and volunteerism can spark renewed civic energy.

A Rural City with a Big Idea In the rolling hills southwest of Atlanta, a small city is redefining what it means to grow thoughtfully. Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia, known for its 70 percent greenspace zoning and storybook hamlets, is proving that progress and preservation can thrive side by side.

When the Georgia Economic Placemaking Collaborative (GEPC) selected Chattahoochee Hills in 2025, the city saw an opportunity to do more than build projects – it set out to build identity. Through GEPC, city staff, artists, and residents began a shared mission: to turn creativity and conservation into catalysts for connection and tourism.

“We’re not just preserving our landscape; we’re designing how people will feel when they’re here.”

Small Places, Big Impact One of the first GEPC demonstration projects focused on an unassuming local landmark, the Cedar Grove Community Center. Once a quiet gathering space, it’s now at the heart of a transformation that shows how small investments can yield lasting pride.

Connecting the Dots Across Chattahoochee Hills, placemaking is becoming a guiding philosophy. City staff are coordinating new wayfinding signage, art installations, and trail networks that make exploration intuitive and inspiring.

At Bouckaert Farm, more than 5,000 acres of greenspace are being preserved through new Hamlet Mixed-Use zoning. The development will include 10 miles of the Chattahoochee RiverLands Trail and two public river access points, bringing regional connectivity and recreation to the city’s doorstep. Farther north, partnerships with The Trust for Public Land have produced two stunning new parks: Campbellton Park and New RiverLands Park. Together, they offer kayak launches, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks that link the city’s rural heart to the Chattahoochee River corridor.

It’s fall, and that means SOUP TIME! This is one of my favorites.

It combines the subtle sweetness of cauliflower with the rich, pungently salty flavor of blue cheese. To serve, top with a sprinkle of chopped chives and some crunchy croutons.

Serves 4-6 1 medium onion, finely chopped 2 celery ribs, strings removed with a vegetable peeler and finely chopped 1 head cauliflower, cut into 1-inch florets 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 cups chicken broth 1 cup whole milk ½ cup (4 oz) crumbled blue cheese (Gorgonzola, Danish Blue, choose your favorite) ½ cup light cream or half-and-half ¼ teaspoon white pepper pinch of salt Chopped chive for garnish Cook onion, celery, and cauliflower in butter in a 3 ½ - to 4-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until onion and celery are softened, 8 to 10 minutes. Add broth and 1 cup milk and simmer, covered,

until cauliflower is very tender, about 20 minutes.

Purée cauliflower mixture in 2 batches in a blender until very smooth (use caution when blending hot liquids –remove the lid plug and cover the opening with a paper towel). Return the soup to the saucepan that you’ve wiped clean and bring to a simmer. Add cheese, cream, pepper, and salt and cook over low heat, whisking, until cheese is melted and soup is smooth, about 1 minute.

Arts Section South Fulton Resident Authors Groundbreaking Book on Workplace Safety Dr. I. David Daniels South Fulton resident Dr. I. Daniels, former Fire Chief of Fulton County and a nationally respected advocate for occupational health and safety, is making international waves with the release of his landmark book, Psychosocial Hazards Are Real! A Guide to Understanding Non-Physical Hazards. More than a publication, the book serves as a strategic call to action—challenging organizations to confront the psychological risks that silently erode workforce health, morale, and performance. Drawing from decades of frontline leadership and scholarly expertise, Dr. Daniels blends empirical research, lived experience, and practical frameworks to equip leaders with the tools to recognize and mitigate hazards such as burnout, bullying, moral injury, and organizational dysfunction. His approach reflects a deep commitment to advancing total worker health and reshaping how safety is understood and implemented across industries.

To launch the book, Dr. Daniels participated in a hybrid release tour—virtually and in person—across Canada (Toronto), Australia (Perth, Melbourne, Sydney), and New Zealand (Auckland). The reception in these countries was especially strong, as employers are increasingly expected to address both psychosocial and physical safety hazards.

In Australia and Canada, the book has been widely celebrated as a foundational guide for creating healthier, more resilient workplaces. Back in the United States, Dr. Daniels participated in book signings at two of the country’s most influential safety conferences: the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) conference in Denver and the National Safety Council (NSC) Congress & Expo in Orlando. He also serves as Chief Safety Officer for End Workplace Abuse, a national advocacy organization working to pass the Workplace Psychological Safety Act—legislation aimed at establishing enforceable standards for psychological safety in U.S. workplaces. Through these roles, Dr. Daniels continues to shape the national conversation around workplace health, pushing for systemic change that protects employees from both physical and non-physical harm. Dr. Daniels is also the host of the Psych Health and Safety USA podcast, a weekly show that features conversations with experts in occupational health, leadership, and mental wellness. I am so excited to introduce myself as the new owner of Hills & Hamlets bookshop! Shree Summerlin As a young girl, I used to spend a lot of time at the library and would often find myself reading in my bedroom, as my mother was a single parent and worked full-time. That passion for reading continued to grow as I became a teenager and then an adult. I always knew from a very young age that I wanted to one day own a bookstore, because I had such a desire to learn, but I thought that it would be something that I would do much later in life.

When the opportunity to acquire Hills & Hamlets arose in August, I was just finishing up a five year stint at Auburn University, where I had been obtaining degrees in Philosophy and German. As I walked into the store and greeted Patience - like I’ve done many times before - she told me that the owners were looking to sell. If perfect timing ever existed, it was in that very moment.

I feel incredibly lucky that Josh and Megan have decided to trust me with this opportunity and I'm thrilled to learn from them, Sandra, and Patience as we make this transition together. I can't wait to grow this beloved bookstore and continue serving the Serenbe community.

Arts Section Featured Artist ~ Kenneth Niles Ken was raised in Buffalo, NY. He started making models as a boy, inspired by watching his father and older brother working on model kits. While his brother built custom model cars, Ken struck out on his own path, choosing aircraft, and has never looked back.

With a lifelong love of history, Ken’s passion lies in recreating small-scale slices of the past that can be held in his hands. His modeling combines research, precision craftsmanship, and heartfelt storytelling to bring each subject vividly to life.

Now retired after a 32+ year career in FedEx operations and sales, Ken has been married for 41 years and is the proud father of four children and grandfather to one. He shares his home with his wife, Dale Niles, an award-winning art photographer in her own right, who has published her first photographic book, What Lies Within: The Eclectic Collections of Andrea M. Noel.

From the Workbench: Recent Builds and Commissions Lockheed Constellation “Connie” This 1/72 scale model of a Lockheed Constellation was built for a collector and aviation enthusiast in St. Louis to commemorate his father’s 1950s immigration flight to the U.S. aboard a TWA Constellation. Known as one of the most beautifully designed propeller-driven commercial aircraft, “Connie” was meticulously detailed with accurate TWA markings, antennas, navigation lights, and landing gear bay structures rarely found in kits. The model won first place in its class at the 2022 IPMS National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska, and was featured in Fine Scale Modeler magazine. True to the artist’s signature style, subtle oil paint washes replicate the exhaust patterns of an active, flying aircraft.

Delta Boeing 757 “Keep Climbing!”

The Boeing 757 remains a favorite among today’s pilots, 20

and this 1/144 scale version was built for a Delta pilot in Peachtree City as a special gift from a friend. Using a standard injection-molded kit, the artist enhanced it with custom antennas, lights, and other Delta-specific details— many of which were verified through research visits to the Delta Museum for accuracy. The polished finish reflects the sheen of a modern jet in flight, while subtle weathering adds realism and life to the model.

Lockheed L-188 “Electra” “The Wings of Man” This 1/144 scale Lockheed L-188 Electra was commissioned as a gift for a retired Eastern Airlines pilot. The gift giver discovered, through a bit of reminiscing, that the pilot’s favorite aircraft to fly had been the Electra, which he once described as “feeling like driving a hot rod.”

When presented with the model, the pilot was delighted and touched to see his favorite aircraft finally represented among his aviation memorabilia—a true “bullseye” moment for both giver and builder.

Arts Section excerpts from her father’s service, the model was finished with authentic wear, weathering, and detail, titled “In the Shadow of Vesuvius.” The family now proudly displays it as a cherished keepsake. The model has won numerous awards, including third place at the 2016 IPMS Nationals in Columbia, SC.

Lockheed P-38 “Lightning” “White Knight” This 1/48 scale model of the legendary Lockheed P-38 Lightning was inspired by a neighbor whose father flew the aircraft during WWII. Using original photos and squadron information, the model was built to represent the “White Knight” fighter in authentic bare-metal finish, a challenging surface achieved through carefully polished metallic paints in multiple shades of aluminum and steel. Displayed under glass beside the pilot’s photo, the piece stands as both a technical triumph and a heartfelt tribute to a family’s wartime legacy.

Supermarine Spitfire “Lonesome Polecat” This 1/48 scale model of the legendary British Spitfire Mk VIII represents an aircraft flown by a U.S. Army Air Force pilot in the Mediterranean during WWII. Remarkably, the pilot’s daughter discovered the model kit bearing her father’s exact markings, “HL MM – Lonesome Polecat,” while shopping, and later commissioned the artist to build it for her family. Using original photographs and diary

WWII Auxiliary Pilot “ATTA Girl” “For Mary” A completely different kind of commission, this 75mm sculpture of a British auxiliary pilot from WWII was created as an anniversary gift for a fellow award-winning modeler’s wife, herself a pilot. Based on a Life magazine cover story about the women’s auxiliary air force, the figure captures both strength and grace. The artist used a small touch of “artistic license” — a flower lifted from the bouquet at her feet and placed in her hair — to balance the rugged flight gear with a hint of femininity. The detail is remarkable down to the watch face on her wrist and the touch of nail polish that delighted young onlookers.

Closing Reflections From iconic aircraft like the Constellation and Electra to wartime tributes such as the P-38 and Spitfire, each build represents more than technical precision — it’s storytelling in miniature. Whether honoring a veteran, commemorating a family legacy, or celebrating aviation history, these models capture the enduring spirit of flight and the people who lived it. Obituary for Bonnie Melear Goode Bonnie Melear Goode of Chatt Hills passed away on October 20 just days after celebrating her 83rd birthday. She leaves behind her husband of 62 years David Goode, daughter and son-in law, Melea and Greg Brett, and granddaughter Chloe, the light of her life.

Her brother Carl (Faith) Melear, and numerous cousins and in-laws are also left to cherish her memory. She loved Greg’s children: Taylor (Sasha), Duncan and Anna Claire, and grandchildren: Jayden, Nixon, Selah Grace, Everly and Arabella. Bonnie cherished her nieces and nephews like her own and anyone who knew her would agree.

Bonnie was born at home in the Rico Community of Chattahoochee Hills and lived there her entire life except for her years away at college. She graduated from Campbell High School in 1960; West Georgia College in 1962; and the University of Georgia in 1963. In 1967, when David was drafted to serve in Vietnam, she began earning her Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia. In 1970, she proudly became a “Double Dawg.” In college, she was a cheerleader and a member of the soccer team. After she

retired, she enjoyed volunteering with community and civic events even briefly working part-time for the city of Chattahoochee Hills.

Bonnie lived out the instructions given to us in Micah 6:8: “the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” She was born with a servant’s heart that was evident in every aspect of her life. She faithfully served in many ways at Providence Baptist Church in Rico teaching Sunday School for 45 years and serving as church pianist for 60 years. She loved mission trips and helping with disaster relief projects locally and nationwide. She was also wellknown for her famous “whipping cream pound cake” which she brought every church function. She was asked by her son in-law to donate one to the Chattahoochee Hills Fire Department Auction and was pleased that it raised $400 for the department.

Bonnie taught Business Education for 33 years at Western, Campbell, Palmetto and Creekside High Schools.

She loved teaching “life skills” such as typing, personal finance, and business math knowing her students would use these skills their entire lives. Her greatests joy was seeing students throughout the years and learning of their successes.

A cutback in hours at her factory job led one single mom to make the decision to pay her mortgage and let her gas bill go unpaid last March. With evenings getting colder, she reached out to us. Brickworks was able to clear her unpaid balance and have the family’s gas turned back on this month. Several families are facing empty propane tanks as the seasons change. We are here to provide once-a-year help with rent and utility expenses to these and other clients in times of extra need.

Anticipating a higher demand for food and financial assistance in the coming year, we are looking to add another needs-assessment volunteer to our team. If you are available a few hours a month (Wednesday afternoons from 3-5 as needs arise), we would love to talk with you. Library With the days growing shorter and the temperatures cooling, there is no better time to stop by the library to check out a few good books. With each passing week, we have been delighted by the steady stream of newly donated books and our volunteers are working diligently to get them onto the shelves for you!

Our community is fortunate to have so many individuals who are willing to share their passion with their neighbors.

We had a wonderful turnout for our first Local Author Talk. Juliet Cutler shared stories from her latest book Lessons in Hope and it was inspiring to learn about the 24

difference individuals can have in their own communities. You can pick up your own copy of Juliet’s book at Hills & Hamlets Bookshop, or borrow a copy from the library.

October was Fire Prevention Month and Chief Brett joined us to help educate our youngest patrons. Toddler Tuesday is always a fun time for the kids and their parents, but it was even more exciting with the addition of a few firemen and their truck!

Special thanks to Laura Richards and Bridget Arrington for leading the Make and Take Fabric Pumpkin Class. Not only did we have a wonderful time learning a new craft, we were treated to homemade muffins and heavenly banana bread. We are also grateful to Pamela Kamor for lending her expertise to aspiring Mahjong players. Our classes offer a great way to learn a new skill and to get to know some of your neighbors!

Chattahoochee Hills Receives 8th Distinguished Budget Presentation Award The City of Chattahoochee Hills is proud to announce that it has been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the eighth year in a row. This national recognition reflects the City's ongoing commitment to excellence in governmental budgeting and financial transparency.

The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program to encourage and assist state and local governments in preparing high-quality budget documents that reflect the highest principles of governmental budgeting. The award represents a significant achievement and demonstrates that the City has met nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation.

These guidelines are designed to assess how well a budget serves as: • A policy document • A financial plan • An operations guide • A communications device To receive the award, budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories.

“We are honored to once again receive this prestigious recognition from the GFOA,” said Mayor Tom Reed. “This award is a reflection of the dedication, professionalism, and transparency upheld by our finance team and city leadership. It underscores our ongoing efforts to serve the community with integrity and fiscal responsibility.”

City Manager Robert Rokovitz added, “Achieving this award for eight consecutive years speaks volumes about our commitment to sound financial planning, clear communication, and effective governance. We strive to make our budget not only a financial tool, but a transparent guide for residents to understand how their tax dollars are being used to support the services and future of Chattahoochee Hills.”

The audit conducted by Mauldin & Jenkins, CPAs &

Advisors, covering the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025 was also just completed. The audit’s purpose was to express an independent opinion on the fairness of the city’s financial statements, to assess internal controls, and to report any material noncompliance or findings.

Overall, City received an ‘unmodified’ opinion, meaning statements present fairly, in all material respects, in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Assets of the City exceeded liabilities by $12,847,605 (net position), representing a $2,438,639 or 23.43% increase over the prior year. Unrestricted net position decreased slightly, from $6,688,205 to $6,427,051, a decrease of $261,154 or 3.9%. As of June 30, 2025, the City’s governmental funds reported combined ending fund balances of $6,728,199, a decrease of $386,236 or 5.43% over the prior year.

The City levies an 8% lodging tax.

The Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.) 48-13- 50 requires that all lodging taxes levied of 5% or more be expended or obligated contractually for the promotion of tourism, conventions, or trade shows. During the year ended June 30, 2025, the City received $486,112 in Hotel/Motel taxes and expended $487,562 for the promotion of tourism, conventions, or trade shows.

One of the areas noted a deficiency is known as segregation of duties. If one person is responsible for initiating, approving, recording, and reviewing a transaction, there's a much higher risk of fraud or error going undetected.

However, this is due to the lack of additional staff within the finance department. Management has committed to a corrective action plan, including prioritized tasks, timelines, and responsible staff.

The City of Chattahoochee Hills remains committed to maintaining high standards of fiscal integrity, transparency, and community accountability. Both the GFOA award and the positive audit results reaffirm the City's focus on responsible stewardship of public funds.
