As we welcome the start of 2026, I am honored to greet you for the first time as your Mayor. Beginning my first term in this role is both a privilege and a responsibility that I hold with deep gratitude. Many of you know that I have had the opportunity to serve our community on the Chattahoochee Hills City Council for the past five years. That experience, listening to residents and working alongside the former Mayor, City Council, and Staff, has strengthened my commitment to our city and deepened my understanding of the work ahead.

This new year marks the beginning of a new chapter for Chattahoochee Hills. We have many new residents joining our community, as well as two newly elected Councilmembers, Angela Addison (District 2) and Tim Southard (District 4), who will represent you at City Hall over the next four years.

I hope everyone will take part in the planning efforts scheduled for this year. We remain grounded in our goal of being one of the most special communities in our region, and I would even say in the country. At our January meeting, we will kick off the five-year update of our Comprehensive Plan for 2026. The last Comprehensive Plan was completed in 2021. This plan serves as the foundational vision for our city, and we will work side-by-side as we refine and shape the future of Chattahoochee Hills together.

Please stay engaged, attend public hearings, and participate in this process. Great plans shape great decisions.

Our city is unique…defined by its rural character, thoughtful development, natural beauty, agricultural heritage, and our shared commitment to preserving what matters most while thoughtfully planning for the future.

In the months ahead, my focus is to lead with steadiness and integrity, to continue listening, and to ensure that people feel seen and heard in the decisions that shape our path forward. Working together with our City Council, Staff, Commissions, Boards, local partners, and engaged citizens, we will pursue initiatives that support quality of life and build an amazing future for generations to come.

Thank you for the trust you have placed in me to serve in this role. I look forward to the year ahead and to all that we will accomplish as a community. Let’s continue working together to keep our city special…after all, We Love Chatt Hills.

OUR COMMUNITY City of Chattahoochee Hills To Expand Campbellton Park With Support From Trust for Public Land, Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program Trust for Public Land, (Dec. 1, 2025)

Trust for Public Land (TPL), in partnership with the City of Chattahoochee Hills and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), has finalized the acquisition of approximately 78.8 acres to expand Campbellton Park and permanently protect 0.65 miles of Chattahoochee River frontage.

The $2.5 million project was funded through a $1.919 million Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program (GOSP) grant, with matching contributions made possible by a generous land donation from one of the property owners.

The addition grows Campbellton Park, a key destination along the Chattahoochee RiverLands Camp + Paddle Trail, from 18 to more than 95 acres, strengthening its role as a hub for outdoor recreation and river access.

“This project is a major milestone for the Chattahoochee RiverLands vision,” said George Dusenbury, Georgia State Director for Trust for Public Land. “By expanding Campbellton Park, we’re connecting more people to nature, recreation and the river that defines this region. It’s a model of what’s possible when local leadership, state resources and community generosity come together.”

The acquisition builds on the April 2025 ribbon cutting that celebrated recent improvements at Campbellton Park and sets the stage for future phases of development

focused on expanded trail connections and interpretive amenities.

“Chattahoochee Hills is proud to preserve this remarkable stretch of riverfront for generations to come,” said Mayor Tom Reed. “Campbellton Park has always represented more than a gateway to the river—it’s a gathering place for our community and a cornerstone of our city’s identity.”

“This expansion represents years of patient work and partnership,” Reed continued. “I’m deeply grateful to the landowner, the Trust for Public Land, the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for their shared vision and commitment.

Their support ensures that the people of Chattahoochee Hills and visitors from across the region will always have access to the river that defines us.”

Campbellton Park is the third official take-out site on the Camp + Paddle Trail, a 48-mile blueway stretching from the City of Atlanta to Carroll County. The site has seen continuous investment in recent years: in 2020, DNR’s Wildlife Resources Division funded a $200,000 boat ramp, followed by more than $1.3 million in capital improvements led by the City and TPL to build restrooms and showers, ADA-accessible campsites, a community gathering space, trails and ecological restoration areas.

“Through the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program, we’re helping communities like Chattahoochee Hills protect

the natural resources that make Georgia special,” said Trevor Santos, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources. “This project ensures public access to one of the state’s most important waterways while safeguarding critical habitats along the Chattahoochee River.”

When complete, the Chattahoochee RiverLands will connect nearly 1 million nearby residents and visitors to the outdoors where they will be able to kayak, swim, bicycle, picnic, walk, camp and wheel along the river. Stretching across 20 cities and seven counties, this network of trails will bring people to the water’s edge, spark a lifelong love of the river and reveal the magic of the Chattahoochee to all.

Dunaway Gardens to host Sundance fellows Six-day writing program moves from Park City, Utah, to Newnan. By Savannah Sicurella savannah.sicurella@ajc.com, courtesy of the AJC Though Atlanta lost out on its bid to become the next location of the Sundance Institute’s eponymous film festival, the metro area will become the home to one of its writers’ programs.

The nonprofit’s weeklong Episodic Program, which provides writers an opportunity to workshop a TV pilot and receive mentorship from industry veterans, will relocate its annual program to the historic Dunaway Gardens in Newnan ahead of its 2026 class. This is the first time since its 2014 inception that the program will be held somewhere other than Park City, Utah.

For six days starting in May, up to 10 fellows will work out of the Newnan property to develop their writing skills, pitch their TV series and participate in story meetings, panels and writers rooms focused on advancing their concept.

“I am so honored and just excited that we’re going to 6

be able to bring this to Georgia and particularly the Atlanta area,” said Dunaway Gardens owner Tena Clark, a longtime music producer, and Chattahoochee Hills resident, who acquired the property about four years ago.

The Sundance program adds another TV writing opportunity to Georgia, which long has lagged behind Los Angeles and New York in its writers’ rooms. Most of the scripts shooting in Atlanta are conceptualized and drafted outside of the state. In recent years, Georgia’s film programs have introduced programs to combat this.

The announcement comes less than a year after Atlanta did not make the cut to become the next host city of the Sundance Film Festival. It was one of six finalists to move forward after the festival’s leadership announced it would consider new locations after its contract with its longtime

Dunaway Gardens is set on about 64 acres overlooking Cedar Creek, says a National Historic Register of Places registration form. It was the passion project of actor Hetty Jane Dunaway, one of the highest-paid talents on the Chautauqua circuit, which were traveling performances of educators, speakers, musicians and other entertainers popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. She spent years turning the property into a training ground for performance artists with natural springs, a terraced outdoor amphitheater, woodframed dwellings and an inn, among other features, says the Historic Register.

Its facilities were used both by small-town and nationally recognized theater groups. Walt and Ray Disney, Minnie Pearl and Tallulah Bankhead were reported to have stayed at the gardens, Clark said.

“What she created here was like the original Sundance,” Clark said. “Her mission was all about teaching, writing, dancing, singing, producing, directing — all of the above to high school and college-age kids, and creating and performing the shows here.”

The property laid dormant after Dunaway’s death in 1961, slowly overtaken by kudzu and beavers bent on turning creeks into marshland, until it was acquired

by Jennifer and Roger Bigham in 2000. The duo helped restore the property into a venue for weddings, receptions and othersocial gatherings.

About four years ago, Clark and her business partner acquired the gardens and more than 200 acres of surrounding land with plans to turn the property into an arts hub and retreat over the next several years. It’s an ambitious, cost-intensive plan, one that already has required rezoning and consultations with conservation companies and master gardeners to preserve the gardens’ greenery.

But before shovels are in the ground and construction loans are secured, housing the Sundance episodic program is one step toward accomplishing her vision.

The relationship between Clark and the Sundance Institute, which was founded by the late actor Robert Redford, goes back several years. Clark said she has for many years been close with people involved in the nonprofit, including Pat Mitchell, who served as the chairman of the board for several years and now lives in Atlanta. Clark also attended the festival for decades.

Michelle Satter, the nonprofit’s founding senior director of artist programs and an architect behind the episodic program, was one of them.

“She stood at the amphitheater, and (as) I was talking about the vision of the property and the place, she said, ‘I feel like this was when I stood at that mountain with (Redford), and he was talking about what he wanted to create there,’” Clark said.

Sundance launched its TV-focused program to provide emerging to mid-career writers an opportunity to develop their writing skills. Past participants including Katori Hall, the creator and showrunner of the Atlanta-shot “P-Valley,” and Barry Jenkins, who created and directed “The Underground Railroad” for Amazon Prime, among others.

The six-day program is fully funded. This year, the Dunaway Gardens Foundation, the nonprofit created to restore and sustain the property, and the Sundance Institute are footing the bill.

Applications for the incoming cohort closed in November, and accepted writers will be notified by April. The next submission season will open in summer 2026. It’s possible there will be two programs held at Dunaway each year, Clark said.

The overall vision for the site won’t be completed for the next two or three cohorts of the episodic program. For now, the program will make use of existing structures at Dunaway, the amphitheater and the gardens itself, and the fellows will take their meals on site. They will be housed at a nearby resort.

Celebrating Placemaking . . . Down at Cedar Grove The Cedar Grove Community Center may look unassuming from the outside, but every Tuesday night this humble cinder-block building turns into a true rock star—lighting up with local country musicians who’ve been gathering here for more than 30 years.

When the City of Chattahoochee Hills joined the Georgia Placemaking Collaborative, the committee had no hesitation in choosing this beloved spot to celebrate. For its first project, the team designed, created, and installed a new sign honoring the musicians and the many makers of art and community who give this place its heartbeat. The result is a double-sided barn quilt titled The Makers Place, featuring a vibrant star framed by Arts-and-Crafts icons—a colorful tribute to creativity, history, and the people who make Cedar Grove shine.

Cedar Grove: Where Rural Traditions Take Root Bring a pie, a friend, and maybe an old acoustic you haven’t dusted off in a while—it’s music night in Cedar Grove. Every Tuesday for more than 30 years, folks have been drifting toward the Cedar Grove Community Center to “pick some music, sing some songs, and shake some hands.” At least, that’s how homegrown guitar picker Gene Terry puts it in his Ballad of Cedar Grove, and Gene ought to know.

This whole tradition sprouted back around 1990 in the cozy living room of Ruth and Gene West. They were die-hard Bluegrass fans who opened their door once a week so neighbors could gather, pick a little, grin a lot, and enjoy each other’s company. Word spread—as good things tend to do—and before long, the crowd outgrew the Wests’ living room. That’s when they found their perfect next home: the Cedar Grove Community Center, then owned by Fulton County.

From that simple start, the Tuesday night pickers grew 8

into a circle of more than a hundred friends and neighbors—a tight-knit bunch who show up for the music but stay for the fellowship.

In 2020, when the City of Chattahoochee Hills acquired the Community Center from Fulton County, it was with a promise in mind: to support the residents who had voluntarily annexed nearly 5,000 acres into the city. The Center officially became the city’s one and only dedicated community space—serving residents spread across farms, homesteads, and rural crossroads.

While the city worked on long-term plans for improvements, the Tuesday night musicians were simply grateful to have a roof over their jam sessions. Meanwhile, the Chatt Hills Community Outreach team rolled up its sleeves and started inviting others in. Before long, Zumba classes were bouncing to their own beat, photographers were swapping stories and settings, and town hall meetings were held on this side of town for the very first time.

Then, in 2024, the city’s economic development director encouraged residents to join the Georgia Placemaking Collaborative. A committee traveled for training, learning that “placemaking” is really just a fancy word for something Continued on page 9

rural folks have known forever—working together to turn good spaces into great ones by honoring what makes a place special. It’s about shaping the places where people naturally gather, using the stories, skills, and heart already rooted in the community.

By 2025, the committee had a placemaking grant in hand and a decision to make. Instead of trying to dream up a brand-new gathering place out in the countryside, they chose to honor the one that had been holding the community together for decades. Their first project: create a new sign for the Cedar Grove Community Center—one that celebrates the past, welcomes the present, and shines a little light on all the makers, musicians, and neighbors still helping Cedar Grove feel like home.

Heritage Story: Cedar Grove School The history of the Cedar Grove Community Center dates back to when the property was used for the first two wooden school buildings in the Cedar Grove Community.

The first building was only one room with no electric lights, or indoor pumping. The second school building was located where the first building had been. This building, which was the last framed building used in Fulton County, was financed by Cornelius A. Neely, a citizen of the community, who bought $3,500 in bonds to construct the school.

In 1936, construction on a new brick school building was completed next door, and the old wooden building was used by the county agents, and a voting place.

Georgia Cities Foundation Awards Placemaking Grants to Nine Communities

The Georgia Economic Placemaking Collaborative, managed by the Georgia Municipal Association, provides training, technical assistance, and peer learning opportunities to cities advancing place-based economic development strategies. Through the Placemaking Grant Program, communities can translate those strategies into on-the-ground projects that energize public spaces.

The grants are part of GCF's ongoing Placemaking Grant Program, funded through the Foundation and supported by the Georgia Power Foundation. The program is available to cities that have participated in the Georgia Economic Placemaking Collaborative (GEPC) - a statewide initiative helping local governments strengthen public spaces, expand civic engagement, and pursue place-based economic development.

Newnan High School senior linebacker Josiah Smith has been named a finalist for the Atlanta Falcons High School Man of the Year Award, a recognition given to student-athletes who combine athletic achievement with academic excellence and community service.

Smith, an outside linebacker for the Cougars, has been a steady presence on a young Newnan defense. Coaches describe him as disciplined, hardworking and reliable in high-pressure situations. His leadership style is quiet but respected, and teammates often point to his consistency during practice and games.

Off the field, Smith maintains a 3.9 GPA while taking advanced coursework in chemistry, physics, algebra and Spanish. School officials say his ability to balance academics with football reflects the same focus he brings to the program.

Smith is also active in community service projects throughout Coweta County, volunteering with youth sports groups and local efforts that support children and families.

Those who know him describe him as humble and motivated, with a strong sense of responsibility to his school and community.

“Josiah is the kind of young man every coach hopes to lead,” Newnan head coach Rodney “Chip”Walker said. “He works hard, treats people with respect and leads by example. His impact goes farbeyond football.”

Newnan athletic director Brandavious Mann echoed that sentiment.

“Josiah reflects the very best of Newnan High School,” Mann said. “He is academically andathletically talented, and we are extremely proud to see him recognized on such a platform.”

The Falcons High School Man of the Year Award is patterned after the NFL’s Walter Payton Man ofthe Year honor, one of the league’s top off-field awards. High school coaches, athletic directorsand principals are invited to submit nominations throughout the season.

In a world that moves quickly and often demands more than our bodies can easily give, opportunities for rest and restoration are increasingly rare. This winter, Creek Retreat in Serenbe has a new offering designed to support health, balance, and well-being: Tui-Na acupressure therapy.

Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Tui-Na is a hands-on therapeutic practice that has been used for thousands of years to support the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It is based on a simple but powerful understanding: good health depends on an open, balanced flow of energy throughout the body. When that flow becomes blocked—through stress, injury, or the cumulative strain of everyday life—discomfort, imbalance and disease can arise.

Tui-Na works to reestablish harmony within the body by opening those blocked pathways. Using a combination of acupressure, joint manipulation, and myofascial release, the practice engages the body as an interconnected system rather than treating symptoms in isolation. Many people experience increased energy, reduced tension, and a deep sense of relaxation after a session—feeling both grounded and revitalized at the same time.

Unlike oil massage, Tui-Na is performed fully clothed, allowing for a more structural and energetic approach to bodywork. Clients are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable clothing to support ease of movement and relaxation during the session.

This offering is facilitated by Ben Posluszny, a certified acupressure therapist who has been practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine since 2004. Drawing on over two decades of experience, his work integrates elements of Tui-Na, Jin Shin, and Shiatsu, along with insights gained from years of hands-on practice.

As a way of welcoming neighbors and community members in the new year, Creek Retreat is offering $20 off your first Tui-Na session for the month of January. Office hours are currently available Monday and Wednesday afternoons, with additional appointments arranged as needed.

OUR COMMUNITY Potato, Chickpea and Cauliflower Curry

This warming, lightly-spiced curry is one of my favorite winter dishes. It’s light yet satisfying and the coconut milk gives it just the right amount of richness.

3 tablespoons olive oil or Ghee 1 large onion, chopped 3-4 cloves garlic, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated or finely chopped 1 ½ tablespoons garam masala ¼ teaspoon cayenne 1 teaspoon salt 1 pound potatoes, scrubbed, cut into 1-inch chunks 1 medium cauliflower, cut into floret 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2 cups chicken or vegetable stock 1 can crushed tomatoes 1 can coconut milk (not coconut cream) Chopped cilantro for garnish Heat oil in a large heavy-bottomed sauté pan (with a lid) over medium heat. Cook onions for 6-8 minutes or until

golden. Add garlic and ginger and cook for 1-2 minutes, then add spice blend and salt and cook for 1-2 minutes more.

Add tomatoes, potatoes and stock. Cover, bring to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes. Uncover, add cauliflower and chickpeas and cook for another 7-8 minutes or until cauliflower is tender. Add coconut milk and simmer until slightly thickened and flavors are blended, about 5 minutes more.

Garnish with coriander. Serves on its own or over jasmine rice.

Arts Section Interview With Shawn Watwood, the New Executive Director of Art Farm at Serenbe

Congratulations Shawn. For those in Chatt Hills who don't know — What is the Art Farm?

Thank you so much. I am thrilled to join the Art Farm Team.

We strive to have the Art Farm be seen as a global creative destination dedicated to inspiring imagination, nurturing the environment, and fostering inclusive collaboration through art based here at Serenbe. We are a non-profit with a vision that centers on bringing people together through the arts while honoring diversity and practicing true sustainability.

At its core, The Art Farm builds meaningful partnerships that support programming, education, and community outreach. It is deeply rooted in the culture of its surrounding communities and committed to caring for the natural landscape that supports it.

We focus on the following pillars of programming include Film, Dance, Theater, Music, Environmental, Public Art and our Artist in residency program. We offer true one of a kind experiences where you can meet a film director, and see a live theater performances in our wildflower meadow.

The Art Farm provides spaces as an environment where creativity can flourish and innovative ideas can grow.

Tell Us More About Your Role as Executive Director?

During my interview process, I stated that my 3 initial goals are to rebuild our brand internally (that is within Serenbe, Chatt Hills and community) externally in greater Atlanta focusing on the artistic community and revenue through sponsorships. Mainly I want to help facilitate the growth and operations of the Art Farm.

During these first few months the team, who I have leaned heavily on during this time and I am so grateful to have such talented staff in Justin Oates-Marable who is our programming manager and Joe Luckett our Marketing Manager, we are really trying to build out the foundation processes and plans for our 2026 year.

What is Your Background? Are You From Georgia?

I am originally from Texas. I moved to Atlanta to join Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre as their Director of Marketing 22

and PR. From there I was the Director of Cultural Affairs for a Foreign Government Consulate here in Atlanta where I focused (they joke that I got to do all the fun stuff) building community and connection throughout the Southeast.

From film festivals, dance events, touring musicians to even sports, we highlighted global connection through arts and culture. I was fortunate enough to work at AMB Sports and Entertainment as Sr Manager of Corporate Partnerships building out a corporate sponsorship program for The Home Depot Backyard helping to fund 27 weeks of free community events and programming. Prior to joining the Art Farm, I was Sr Director of Corporate Philanthropy for Morehouse School of Medicine.

I am also a part of the Film Recommendation Committee for the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, board member of CHARRS, social justice environmental non profit, Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Beltline Public art review committees.

I am also involved in the Atlanta Roller Derby in their upcoming capital campaign.

I live in the English Avenue neighborhood of Atlanta with my wife Camille and two rescue pities Ollie and Andi.

I am a big advocate for the redevelopment of Historic Westside of Atlanta working with Westside Future Fund and Quest Communities.

What Do You Believe is the Mission of Art Farm in Context of the Greater Chatt Hills City and Surrounding Atlanta Areas? To be honest, I think we are at a point where we are trying to figure that out. As with all arts organizations, we are that key point of determining who we are and who we want to be. That being said, we have the

Arts Section goal of being a global destination for the celebration of arts and culture.

One of our goals is to continue to build our relationship with the greater Chatt Hills area where we are seen as not only an Arts and culture destination but also as a valued member of the community.

The mission of the Art Farm will always have a foundation of artistic excellence with an emphasis on programming experienced in magical outdoor places.

We value the perspectives and contributions of all people and are committed to being an inclusive organization that welcomes and respects everyone.

Art Farm Headquarters is Literally in the Middle of the Forest as are Many of Your Events. What Makes That so Unique to the Experience? It is magical. Truly. What we do, where we do it. The beauty of Serenbe is so special. In speaking with audience members who are sitting underneath the stars, sharing the moment of a live theatre experience, everyone had a similar feeling of how unique, how fun, how beautiful and how special the Art Farm is.

How Do You See Art Farm Growing in the Next Several Years? Our future is unlimited. I mean that honestly. We will continue to present elevated one of a kind experiences within the current programming offerings while we expand the areas of Public Art and our Artist in Residency program.

I think we are also looking at the possibility of several of our verticals taking the natural next step and maturing into a festival style event attracting a larger audience with larger cultural impact.

As we are already thinking about what 2027 will look like, I think as a team and I know the board is discussing how we can maximize our offerings, our community connection and continue to elevate Art Farm.

Also, we have a desire for a greater impact directly to the community. We are really laying the foundation for more authentic and relationship-based connection to our local schools.

Memorials Daniel Steadham Daniel Steadham, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, at the age of 59. Born on June 7, 1966, Daniel lived a life full of love, dedication, and joy.

For over 40 years, he was married to the love of his life, Kim Steadham, with whom he shared countless cherished moments. His family was his pride and joy, and he was a devoted father to Danielle Sewell and Jeremy Steadham, and a treasured grandfather to Alyxis Sewell and Landyn Sewell.

Daniel had a passion for grading and ran his own business, enjoying the work and the satisfaction it brought him. He had a deep love for his tractors, which he often used to work the land he cared for so dearly.

In his spare time, Daniel found great joy in spending time with his friends and family. His bond with his bonus brother and friend, Kyle Jones, was particularly special, and he valued the laughter and camaraderie they shared.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Dwayne Steadham. Daniel is survived by his loving wife, Kim; his parents, Jerry and Glenda Steadham; his children, Danielle and Jeremy; his brother, Mark Steadham; and his grandchildren, Alyxis and Landyn. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will miss their beloved uncle dearly.

Daniel’s warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for those around him will be remembered by all who knew him. His legacy of love and laughter will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

Spreading Warmth Coats, blankets, hats, scarves and gloves began arriving in our food panty just after Thanksgiving thanks to the generosity of the Terra School families and super organizer Nell Blain. This year, we were able to offer a new experience for our clients.Instead of receiving a coat in their size along with their groceries, families were able to come into city hall and select their own coats that were sorted by volunteers into size, age and gender. Each family member had the opportunity to try on and take home a coat that fit their unique personality. Thirty-four households (nearly 150 family members) selected coats along with warm blankets, hats, scarves and socks. Thanks to all in the community who helped us with this outreach. We have finished this year’s coat drive but will continue to accept donations of blankets to distribute to families throughout the winter.

Looking Ahead Brickworks has grown from our humble beginnings of a single bookshelf housing canned goods in the library to a fully stocked pantry room in 2025 offering a menu of over 60 food and personal hygiene items.

In 2026, we anticipate continued growth as the realities of the economy continue to challenge families in our community. Reduced hours at work, the unexpected cost of a home or car repair, and the rising costs of food and housing can be a breaking point for families with limited incomes and those who are underemployed. We will continue to be here, first, to assist individuals in our community who are facing food insecurity; and as funding is available, to offer financial assistance so families can remain safely in their homes.

Library 2025 was quite the year at the Library! We saw our space

completely transformed with fresh paint, a Chatt Hills inspired mural, new furniture and scores of new books. Our beloved director Nan McGuffy, stepped away from her post but continued to share her talents working with our Todder Tuesday program. We welcomed new volunteers and new patrons, and enjoyed a lovely reopening reception in August.

In December, Fire Chief Brett made an appearance as the conductor of the Polar Express. Nan and Catherine went all out with a snowy backdrop, a toddler sized train, games, crafts and holiday snacks. Chief Brett read The Polar Express and the children had a wonderful time! After all of the festivities wrapped up, and the final cleanup was complete, a bittersweet moment occurred as Nan handed over the reigns of the Toddler Tuesday program. We are sad that this day has come, and excited to see the program continue

South Fulton Parkway Alliance 2025 Holiday Luncheon By Camille Lowe The South Fulton Parkway Alliance brings cities and communities along the Parkway together to collaborate on issues that impact our future, As Mayor Reed concludes his service, our city will remain involved to advocate for quality and ensure we are informed and engaged on the issues facing the Parkway.

Mayor Tom Reed received the 1st ever Chuck Miller citizen award for his years of service and support of the organization.

Starting the New Year Early: Building a Healthier Community Through Wellness, Nutrition, and Functional Fitness As a city manager, my job is to help build systems that keep our community strong, resilient, and prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead. As a CrossFit trainer, my role is remarkably similar except the system I am helping to build is the human body. At the start of a new year, these two roles align perfectly. Strong cities are built by healthy people, and healthy people are built through consistent habits rooted in sound nutrition, purposeful movement, and a commitment to long-term wellness.

Too often, we wait until January to focus on health, only to lose momentum by February. This year, I encourage our community to start early, think differently, and prioritize sustainable habits that support both individual well-being and collective strength.

Just like roads, parks, and emergency services, health and wellness are foundational infrastructure. When individuals prioritize their physical and mental health, the entire community benefits through increased productivity, reduced healthcare costs, and a higher quality of life.

Wellness is not a luxury; it is a shared responsibility.

From my experience in public service and fitness coaching, the most effective approach to health mirrors good governance: consistency, adaptability, and preparation for the unexpected.

Good health begins with proper nutrition. Food is more than calories; it is fuel and information for the body.

A balanced diet built around whole, minimally processed foods such as lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates which support energy, recovery, and long-term health. Rather than extreme diets or short-term fixes, a practical approach works best: eat to support daily demands, prioritize protein, include a variety of vegetables, stay hydrated, and limit excessive sugar and processed foods. Nutrition should support your life, not complicate it.

As a CrossFit trainer, I emphasize that fitness is not about aesthetics, it is about capability. Eat for what you

want to perform like not for what you want to look like. True fitness prepares individuals for the physical demands of everyday life, many of which are unpredictable. Carrying groceries, lifting children, climbing stairs, responding to emergencies, or working long hours all require strength, endurance, coordination, and resilience.

CrossFit defines fitness as constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity across a broad range of physical skills. This approach mirrors real life.

Functional movements such as squatting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and running build strength, balance, agility, stamina, and flexibility. Variation prevents over-specialization, while appropriate intensity drives adaptation and growth.

Starting the new year early is not about perfection, but intention. Commit to moving most days, choosing nutritious foods more often than not, getting adequate sleep, managing stress, and surrounding yourself with supportive people.

Health is not built in a single workout or meal. It is built through repeated actions over time much like a strong city is built through thoughtful planning and consistent effort.

A healthier city begins with healthier citizens, and that journey starts today.
