Share the Road: Help Keep Cyclists Safe

As School Begins It’s hard to believe summer is already coming to an end and another school year is here. I know many families are getting back into a routine, and I want to wish all of our students, teachers, school employees, volunteers, and parents a great start to the new school year.

As school starts back, I’d like to ask everyone to do one simple thing…slow down. Please pay attention to the speed limits and be a little more aware on our roads, especially during the morning and afternoon hours. Watch for children walking, riding their bikes, getting in and out of vehicles and golf carts, and school transportation picking up and dropping off students. We all have a role in helping children get to and from school safely.

One of the things I love about Chattahoochee Hills is that people really do care about one another. Let’s all do our part by slowing down, paying attention, and helping keep our roads safe. It’s a simple thing we can all do to help protect our children and everyone who shares our roads.

Have a safe and memorable school year!

Chattahoochee Hills’ scenic countryside, rolling hills and quiet rural roads make the community a popular destination for road and gravel cyclists. Routes such as the well-known “Silk Sheets” and “Dirty Sheets” bring both local riders and visitors through the area.

With bicycles and motor vehicles often traveling on the same two-lane roads, patience and awareness are essential. Under Georgia law, bicycles are considered vehicles, and cyclists generally have the same rights and responsibilities as other road users. Cyclists may also use the full travel lane when a road is too narrow to safely share or when they need to avoid gravel, potholes, debris or other hazards.

When approaching a cyclist, drivers should slow down and wait until there is a clear view of oncoming traffic before passing. Georgia law requires motorists to provide at least three feet of space between their vehicle and a bicycle.

Drivers should change lanes when conditions allow rather than attempting to squeeze past a cyclist within the same narrow lane.

Cyclists also share responsibility for road safety. Riders should travel in the same direction as traffic, obey signs and signals, use hand signals when turning or stopping, and use lights and reflective equipment when visibility is limited. Georgia law allows cyclists to ride no more than two abreast on most roadways.

A few moments of patience can prevent a serious accident. Whether traveling on four wheels or two, everyone deserves to arrive safely. Please slow down, stay alert and share the road.

OUR COMMUNITY Discovering a Sweet Haven in Chatt Hills New Residents Celebrate with a Barn Quilt

By Laurie Searle Missy Scott and Eddie Brock weren't looking for a new home when they first discovered Rico Road during a road trip to visit friends and family. But something about its winding, tree-lined road, working farms, and rural charm captured their hearts. Before long, they traded the hustle of their crowded Florida community for a Sweet Haven in Chattahoochee Hills.

To celebrate the move, Missy's sister, Andie, painted the Thistle Rose Barn Quilt as a housewarming gift. Inspired by their family's Scottish heritage and Missy's love of gardening, the design is a fitting welcome to the place she now calls home.

Finding her way home Growing up, Missy moved frequently as her father's landscaping career took the family from place to place.

After her parents divorced, her mother settled in Carrollton, Georgia, where Missy attended middle school and discovered the simple pleasures of small-town life. In 1973, she moved to Florida, where she built a life, raised her children, and spent the next five decades.

Over the years, Florida changed. The quiet communities she once loved became more crowded and busy.

After her children left home, Missy found herself longing for something she couldn't quite define.

Then came an unexpected road trip through Chatt Hills.

As she traveled along Rico Road, something stirred within her. The peaceful countryside, working farms, and sense of community reminded her of what she had loved as a young girl. For the first time in years, she realized what had been missing.

Finding a home in Chattahoochee Hills seemed unlikely. Homes rarely come on the market, and when they do, they are often beyond the reach of many buyers. Yet just one day before Missy arrived to tour properties, the future Sweet Haven became available. The home was everything she had hoped for—a manageable property surrounded

While visiting the property, Missy met Michelle, whose sister had long cared for the home. When Missy introduced herself, Michelle surprised her by saying, "I know you. I've been praying for the right person to come here."

Looking back, Missy sees a remarkable chain of events that led her to Chattahoochee Hills. Even selling her Florida home seemed to fall into place when a friend of a neighbor immediately stepped forward to purchase it.

Today, Missy is delighted to be reconnecting with her Georgia roots. Her mother was born and raised in Carrollton, her father grew up in Ashburn, and several members of her extended Entrekin family live nearby. She is especially excited that her first cousin, Patti, is building a new home less than three miles away.

For Missy, the move to Chattahoochee Hills feels less like starting over and more like coming home. Here, she has found exactly what she had been searching for all along: peace, quiet, community, and a place that feels like home.

OUR COMMUNITY Nearby Development to Watch: The Preserve on Bear Creek Here are a few important facts about The Preserve on Bear Creek: • The development will include 266 residential homes.

• Approximately 50 acres of green space will be preserved.

• Planned amenities and a Homeowners Association (HOA) will be part of the community.

• A community meeting with the developer will be planned in August, and additional details will be shared once available.

A proposed residential development known as The Preserve on Bear Creek is planned just north of the Chattahoochee Hills city limits along Cascade Palmetto Highway in the City of South Fulton.

Current plans call for approximately 266 single-family homes on the site, while preserving roughly 50 acres of open space. Although the project is not located within Chattahoochee Hills, its proximity to the city means it could have an impact on traffic patterns and future growth along the Cascade Palmetto Highway corridor.

The property is located near the intersection of Cascade Palmetto Highway and Rivertown Road, approximately 3 to 4 miles north of Chattahoochee Hills City Hall.

The site has been identified for residential development for many years, with previous plans never coming to fruition.

As the project moves through the City of South Fulton's planning and approval process, Chattahoochee Hills residents may wish to follow its progress due to its location near the city boundary. The development is one of several projects proposed in the broader South Fulton–Palmetto area that could influence transportation, infrastructure, and regional growth in the coming years.

Sitting on a fence post at Hutcheson Ferry Park in Chattahoochee Hills, she points out the 3 miles of trails that wind through the hilly 103-acre park, one of eight public outdoor spaces she helps manage as the Mayor of the City of Chattahoochee. With over 37,000 acres of farmland, preserved greenspace, and large residential lots, the city also boasts the state’s first scenic byway, and seven public parks and facilities on 1,200 acres of preserved parklands with access to the Chattahoochee River. Few communities can offer this kind of connection to nature, where residents and visitors can enjoy walking, reflection, learning and time outdoors with family. It’s no wonder Camille chose to make Chatt Hills her home in 2014.

“I first came to Chatt Hills in 2014 while looking for a place with nature in mind,” she says. “I lived in California right out of college, and when I came home to Georgia, it felt different. The beautiful character of some of the small towns was beginning to change, and I noticed that some areas were very quick to pave over most of their landscape. I needed to be near Atlanta for my work and not as far south as my hometown of Macon, and Chatt Hills made perfect sense.”

Since then, Camille settled in Serenbe, ran successfully for a City Council seat, and was elected Mayor (the city’s first female in the role) in 2025. Her day job as territory 6

account manager for a biopharmaceutical company takes her through other rural communities throughout the state so she recognizes how unique her hometown is in many ways.

“I wasn’t familiar with any other place in Georgia that was planning to preserve 70% of their land,” says Camille.

“This place wanted to try and be different and shoot for a better quality of life. As I spent more time here, I grew to appreciate not just the natural beauty, but the thoughtful vision and the people who care deeply about preserving what makes this place special.”

Being surrounded by nature suits her perfectly. Walking with friends on the paths of Serenbe or diving deeper into the miles of park trails, preserving the land and keeping it accessible are priorities, personally and as Mayor.

Local government shapes the places we call home, and thoughtful, engaged voices are always needed. Even small steps like volunteering, serving on a board, or participating in community conversations lead to meaningful and lasting impact.”

Caring deeply about the place we live makes coming home more meaningful and Camille believes service is the most wholesome expression of belonging.

“We will always have differences, but a strong sense of community makes a meaningful difference. I serve because I care and hope for a bright future, one where people feel connected and part of something meaningful. I love Chattahoochee Hills!”

OUR COMMUNITY New Climate Science Website Makes Trusted Information Available to the Public A new independent website, Climate. us, has launched to provide the public with access to climate science, data, maps and educational resources.

Created by members of the former team behind NOAA’s Climate. gov, the nonprofit website is designed to preserve and expand public access to science-based climate information.

The full site launched on June 23, 2026, and includes climate news and features, expert information, maps and data resources, climate indicators and educational materials.

The goal of Climate.us is to make complex climate science understandable and useful for educators, journalists, community leaders, planners and residents. Its resources cover topics including drought, extreme heat, rainfall patterns, El Niño and La Niña, long-term climate trends and future climate projections.

What Climate Trends Could Mean for Georgia & Chattahoochee Hills Georgia’s climate is projected to continue warming, with heat waves expected to intensify and higher temperatures increasing the rate at which moisture is lost from soils during dry periods. Although annual rainfall projections contain more uncertainty, most climate models project a modest increase in Georgia’s annual precipitation by mid-century, while the Southeast is also expected to experience increasing stress from extreme heat, heavy rainfall events and more persistent or intense drought conditions.

For Chatt Hills, these broader state and regional trends point to

issues that are especially relevant to a community defined by forests, streams, farms and large areas of conserved land. Periods of heavier rainfall may increase erosion and stormwater concerns, while hotter temperatures and more intense dry periods could affect water resources, agriculture, trees and other natural systems. These projections are not predictions of conditions in any particular year, but they can help

communities think about long-term land use, water management, infrastructure and conservation decisions.

Climate.us provides residents with a new resource for exploring these issues and understanding how changes in temperature, rainfall and other climate conditions may affect communities across the country.

Georgia Climate Outlook Maps Projected Number of Days each year with highs above 100°F Days over 100°F are an important indicator for public health, energy demand, infrastructure durability, and agricultural productivity.

The above maps compare current conditions with projected conditions in 2050 under three emissions pathways: Moderate climate action, a middle-of-the-road scenario considered to be the most likely trajectory given current policies and trends.

Limited climate action, a scenario reflecting slower emissions reductions and continuing reliance on fossil fuels.

Increased fossil fuel use and no efforts to reduce GHG emissions.

OUR COMMUNITY Georgia is losing farmland fast. A new state program aims to help save it

This coverage is made possible through a partnership between WABE and Grist, a nonprofit environmental media organization.

Russ Moon grows corn, soybeans and strawberries and raises cattle on his family farm in Madison County, Georgia, outside of Athens.

His family has worked that land for four generations, around 100 years. And he said he wants to keep it that way, and pass the farm on to his kids one day.

“Selling the land is really not an option,” he said. “I intend on remaining in agriculture for as long as possible.”

But he’s watched more housing and development come to the area over the years. It’s appealing to many, he said, to live near the University of Georgia in Athens and also enjoy the bucolic rural setting. Other farms around him have already sold, he said, and he’s worried that if left unchecked, the development rush will fundamentally change his community.

Moon said he’d only sell if he had to. But some day his kids could find themselves forced into the decision.

Farming can be an unstable business, subject to weather and changing crop prices and global markets.

“There may be a day where they have to sell, but I don’t want the land to be developed,” he said. “That’s my desire, that’s my family’s desire.”

In an effort to help farmers like Moon, Georgia’s legislature created a new program a few years ago meant to protect farms.

The Georgia Farmland Conservation Fund will help farmers sell development rights while keeping their land.

The first applications are now in, and property owners will find out in August if they’ve been selected to receive some of the $2 million allocated for this first round of funding.

Funding conservation The Fund coordinates federal, state and local match funding for conservation easements, and creates an advisory council to review and approve proposals.

Easements allow landowners like Moon to sell the future development rights for their property to outside organizations, like land trusts. The landowner receives an upfront payment, half of which comes from state funds 8

The landowner can continue farming, grazing livestock, growing and harvesting timber, or however else they use their land. They can even sell the land — just not to a developer who will turn it into housing, a strip mall or an industrial site.

“It’s a compelling alternative to our farming landowners that are feeling a lot of financial crunch and are just being inundated with offers for selling out,” said Katherine Moore, president of the Georgia Conservancy, which advocated for the new state fund.

Though this is a new program for Georgia, it’s not a new idea. Some 30 states already have what are known as Purchase of Agricultural Conservation Easement programs, though the amount of funding varies a great deal from state to state. Texas allocates $2 million annually, while Florida set aside $300 million in 2022 and $100 million in 2024.

Georgia’s law, modeled after these initiatives, was adopted in 2023. The state legislature passed the initial round of funding in 2024, and the first round of applications closed May 20.

“It is unprecedented for Georgia to have such a program, which is a little wild when you think that, you know, agribusiness in total is our number one economic engine in the state,” Moore said.

OUR COMMUNITY Balancing business Even though agriculture is Georgia’s leading industry, farmers face mounting pressure to sell to developers for housing, warehouses, data centers and other uses. The state could lose some 800,000 acres of farmland by 2040, according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

“That means 10% of our farmland will be gone in the next 15 years or so,” said state agriculture commissioner Tyler Harper. “And that’s a staggering statistic.”

It’s a concern not only because farms provide food and jobs and are a big part of the state’s economy, but also because farming is a way of life in much of Georgia.

State leaders often tout the booming economy, proudly calling Georgia the number one state to do business. But that gives Moon pause.

“The whole time we keep being the number one place to do business, we’re hurting our number one industry,” he said.

And then there are the potential climate impacts.

Converting farmland to other uses can increase greenhouse gas emissions, according to the American Farmland Trust. Topsoil is often removed, releasing the carbon that’s stored in it. Residential development and industrial operations often produce more emissions than farming does.

Conservation easements, on the other hand, can encourage farming and management practices that sequester more carbon, and they often protect non-agricultural land adjacent to fields — like woods and wetlands.

Some of Moon’s land is already in a conservation easement, which he entered into directly with a land trust in 2019. He said he hopes that getting more farmland into conservation can help maintain some balance before it’s too late.

“Once you develop a piece of property, you’re never gonna – it’s never gonna go back,” he said. “You lose farmland, it’s gone forever.”

OUR COMMUNITY Two Metro Atlanta cities receive $100k food system grant

Food Well Alliance and the Atlanta Regional Commission announced Chattahoochee Hills and Palmetto as the awardees for the 2026 Local Food System Plan, with a $100,000 grant for each city.

The grant package will include a $75,000 cash grant plus $25,000 of in-kind support to launch a strategic plan for strengthening the local food system.

Each city will co-create a strategic “Local Food System Plan,” formerly known as a City Agriculture Plan. City leadership will spend the next year working with community members on city-wide surveys about food access and gardening, focus groups with local growers and pop-up conversations at markets and more.

Ultimately, the plan will aim to expand healthy food access, support local growers, promote sustainable practices and expand agriculture. The cities will contribute an additional $50,000 in-kind match to help the planning and implementation period.

Palmetto Mayor Teresa Thomas-Smith said the project is about “cultivating health” and “restoring dignity” by centering food access for residents. Chattahoochee Hills is already an agricultural hub – 70% of the city’s land is designated for agriculture and forestry.

“We are thrilled to work with communities that are already regional leaders in conservation-based planning,” Food Well Alliance Senior Policy and Planning Manager Sarah Brown said. “This process will help connect existing farms, gardens and agritourism assets, lift up community priorities, and invest in projects that make the local food system more resilient and equitable.”

Food Well Alliance advances its mission through three focus areas: Grower Resources We provide centralized support to help community gardens, farms, and orchards thrive. Since 2015, we’ve equipped local growers with essential tools for success, including technical assistance, training, tractor support, grants, labor teams, volunteers, compost, seedlings, and more.

Local Food System Planning In partnership with the Atlanta Regional Commission, we convene policymakers, residents, growers, and community leaders to develop local food system plans. Since 2019, we’ve partnered with seven municipalities across metro Atlanta and continue to expand annually.

Community Education We collaborate with a variety of partners to offer year-round learning experiences for all ages and skill levels–from our K-12 compost program to outdoor events, volunteer opportunities, and workshops. Topics include soil health, fruit tree care, gardening, composting, beekeeping, and more.

People often ask if I have a favorite coffee. The truth is, I have favorite taste memories. Like the way some coffees wake you up with bright citrus. Our newest roast, WREN, is one of those coffees.

It comes from the mountains of Cubulco, Guatemala, where coffee grows slowly at elevations between 1,600 and 1,800 meters. That extra time on the tree develops a dense, sweet bean.

When I roast WREN, I’m trying not to change the coffee—I’m trying to reveal it.

In the cup, I find balanced body and comforting notes of dark chocolate and roasted almond, followed by a gentle brightness of red currant.

One of the greatest joys of roasting is watching someone discover a flavor they didn’t know coffee could have.

Maybe it’s the first time they’ve noticed sweetness without sugar.

Heirloom Tomato and Cheese Cobbler

This dish celebrates the best flavors of summer. Peak-season heirloom tomatoes are baked beneath a golden, buttery cheese and herb biscuit crust. As it bakes, the tomatoes soften into a lightly jammy filling, releasing their sweet-tart juices, while the topping becomes golden and crisp on the outside and tender inside creating a comforting dish that's both rustic and elegant.

2 ½ lb. heirloom tomatoes, cored, sliced ¼" thick 1 Tbsp. plus ½ tsp. kosher salt 2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 1 ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. baking soda 2 teaspoons sugar 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for surface 5 Tbsp. cold unsalted butter, cut into ½“pieces 2/3 cup buttermilk ¼ cup finely chopped chives 4 oz. coarsely grated sharp cheddar (about 1 ½ cups), divided 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 6 sprigs thyme 1 large egg Preheat oven to 400°F. Gently toss tomato slices with 1 Tbsp. salt in a medium bowl, then arrange in an even layer on paper towels. Let sit until most of the juices are released, about 15 minutes. Pat tomatoes dry with more paper towels.

Meanwhile, whisk pepper, baking powder, baking soda, 1 ½ cups flour, ½ tsp. salt and sugar in a large bowl to combine. Cut in butter with a pastry cutter or 2 butter knives until pea-size pieces form. Stir in buttermilk, chives, and ¾ cups cheese with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms. (See Note)

Turn out dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Gently knead 2–3 times until dough just comes together, being careful not to overwork. Roll out dough to 3/4" thick. Cut with a 2" flour-dipped biscuit cutter or small glass. DO NOT TWIST THE CUTTER. Twisting seals the edges inhibiting the dough from rising while baking. Transfer to a plate or baking sheet and chill until ready to use.

Pour oil into a large deep heatproof skillet or braising dish.

Arrange tomato slices in even layers in pan (you’ll have about 3 layers); top with thyme. Roast until tomato juices start to bubble, 15–20 minutes.

Discard thyme sprigs. Flatten tomatoes into an even layer with a spatula, then sprinkle with the remaining ¾ cups of cheese. Arrange biscuits over, spacing about 1" apart.

Whisk the egg and 1 Tbsp. water in a small bowl. Brush biscuits with egg wash. Bake until biscuits are golden brown and firm to the touch, 18–20 minutes. Let cool 5–10 minutes before serving.

Note: You can also make the dough in a food processor.

Start with the dry ingredients. Pulse to combine. Add the cubed butter and pulse again until pea-sized pieces form then add buttermilk, chives, and ¾ cups cheese and pulse until a shaggy dough forms.

Do Ahead: Dough can be formed into biscuits 8 hours ahead. Keep chilled.

• Modifiable Risk Factors: Nearly 59% of dementia caregivers possess at least one major modifiable risk factor for developing dementia themselves, and 24% have two or more.

• Extreme Physiological Stress: Chronic caregiving strain floods the body with cortisol. This suppresses the immune system, promotes systemic inflammation, and causes high blood pressure—which caregivers are 27% more likely to develop. High blood pressure is a direct cause of vascular dementia.

• Severe Sleep Deprivation: Roughly 65% of dementia caregivers suffer from severe sleep problems. Deep sleep is the period when the brain flushes out toxins and amyloid plaques; lacking it accelerates cognitive decline.

• Mental Health & Isolation: Up to 40% of family caregivers experience clinical depression, and 43% report severe loneliness and social isolation. Both chronic depression and loneliness are heavily linked to faster brain aging.

• Shared Environments: Spouses often share decades of the same environmental exposures, dietary habits, and lifestyle habits, which may also play a role in their shared vulnerability.

The 2026 season opened on Valentine’s Day with an intimate and memorable performance by Julie and David Coucheron, followed in March by Omnimodal, an innovative presentation produced in collaboration with Georgia Tech’s Music Technology Department and SCAD. 2026 Art Farm Jazz Series The 2026 Jazz Series brings two more extraordinary performances to the stage, each exploring jazz as both history and living art.

September 19, Mambo, Latin Jazz & Beyond Experience an electrifying evening of Afro-Cuban rhythms and Latin jazz mastery featuring Bobby Sanabria & Sexteto Ibiano. Three-time Grammy-nominated drummer, educator, and bandleader Bobby Sanabria brings infectious clavé-driven rhythms and sophisticated New York jazz harmonies together in a performance tracing the evolution of Afro-Cuban music to modern salsa.

By Campus Pastor Jeff Peek As a native south Fulton County resident, growing up in the small city of Palmetto was a real treat for me. I can remember sitting on the wooden bench in front of Pulliam’s gas station and listening to the stories told by various gentlemen that worked there.

These ole guys not only pumped your gas, but they also checked your oil, washed your windshield, and checked your tire pressure if you asked.

You could go inside and get a pack of peanut butter crackers out of a glass jar and a glass coke bottle out of the coke machine.

If you have never had a 6oz. glass bottle, cold, Coca-Cola, you have never had a coke. It truly was special and takes me back to my childhood. It was a real blessing to grow up this way.

When my wife and I got married 42 years ago, we moved into a small brick house inside the city limits. Bradley’s Big Buy grocery store was the place to shop where everyone knew your name. We were given 2 steaks as a wedding present from the owners, now that’s a small-town grocery.

A small white church has stood for over 150 years on a hill at the corner of Hutchinson Ferry and Sardis Road. This church like the small city has stood the test of time through the years. People have come and gone, growth has moved in, the landscape has changed somewhat, but the fabric of our society has stayed the same.

My Daddy was a simple man with two philosophies he lived by and instilled in me. He said live your life in this order, God, family and career in that order and the second thing is to have a system for everything you do. This was my Daddy instilling in me truths to live by.

As I have grown older the things in life that really matter are Faith, Family and Eternity. “So, we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal “ 2 Corinthian 4:18 At Crossroads Church Chattahoochee Hills we are a family that focuses on today and eternity. New RiverLands Park Master Plan The City of Chattahoochee Hills is taking the next step to elevate New RiverLands Park as part of a regional vision for the Chattahoochee River. The RiverLands, an initiative of the Trust for Public Land, is a 100-mile-long public greenway and blueway plan from Buford Dam to Chattahoochee Bend State Park. The City, in collaboration with Chattahoochee NOW, is poised to lead the way in its implementation by advancing the plans for this park's design. While the pavilion, kayak launch, and campgrounds are open and available to the public, the bulk of the 290+ acre property remains inaccessible. This master plan will define the future programming of the rest of this land and catalyze opportunities for greater regional connectivity.

Chattahoochee NOW has engaged HGOR, an Atlanta design firm, to design the master plan. Over the past month, HGOR has been developing a conceptual design that incorporates feedback gathered from the June 6th Community Event and an online survey. On July 9th, the firm presented a draft plan to a Joint Commission Meeting of relevant City Commissions and the CVB for their feedback. The team will continue to receive feedback in meetings with stakeholder groups this month and will present the draft plan to City Council at their next Work Session.

This City Council Work Session is on Tuesday, August 4th at 5:00pm at City Hall, and is open to the public.

Later in August, the team will host a second community event for the general public to view and comment on the draft concept plan. BRICKWORKS UPDATE Food Pantry Update - August 2026

Helping Families Thrive Through the Summer We continue to be amazed by the generosity of our community. Time and again, you show up to support neighbors in meaningful, practical ways—and we are so grateful.

Thanks to donations received this spring, our Food Pantry was able to add a second monthly food pickup for all clients beginning in June. We've been able to continue that extra support throughout the summer, helping families stretch their grocery budgets during a time when many are feeling the pressure. Every donation makes a real difference in our ability to care for neighbors facing hardship.

We're also thankful for the many community partners who help make this work possible.

For a second year, Global Learning Initiative brought its Grab & Go Meals program to City Hall every Friday morning during the school break, providing free, nutritious breakfasts and lunches for children and teens ages 18 and under. They had a wonderful response this year and hope to expand to even more families in our area.

Southside Church and the families of Serenbe generously donated backpacks and school supplies for the 145 children whose families visit our Food Pantry. Their kindness will help students head back to school this fall with the tools they need to succeed. We were also touched by a wonderful group of moms who donated and lovingly assembled monthly essentials kits for teen girls, helping them start the school year feeling healthy, confident, and prepared.

Our partnership with Midwest Food Bank continues to be a cornerstone of our Food Pantry. Every month, they provide more than 1,400 pounds of protein, fresh produce, pantry staples, and specialty dietary items that help keep

our shelves stocked. In July, we were happy to welcome members of their Agency Visit Committee for a tour of the food pantry. They took time to learn about our work, ask thoughtful questions, and see firsthand how our volunteers and partners come together to serve the community. They shared that Brickworks’ food pantry reflects exactly the kind of local impact they hope to support.

In June, the Food Pantry served 90 families, including 189 adults and 139 children. We also provided emergency financial assistance to seven families to help with housing and utility expenses.

Thank you to everyone who donates, volunteers, and partners with us. Your generosity continues to make hope and practical support possible for our neighbors every day.

When Saving a Life Means Giving Someone Hope Chattahoochee Hills Police Officers Recognized with Lifesaving Awards

By Kevin Digou, Chief of Police, Chattahoochee Hills Police Department During the July 7 Chattahoochee Hills City Council meeting, Detective Lee Martin and Officer Zachary Phillips were recognized with the Chattahoochee Hills Police Department’s Lifesaving Award for their actions during a mental health crisis at Cochran Mill Park.

When most people think of a police officer saving a life, they may picture a dramatic rescue from a burning vehicle, pulling someone from dangerous water, or providing emergency medical care at the scene of a serious crash.

But there is another kind of lifesaving that often goes unseen. Sometimes, saving a life does not require force. It requires patience, compassion, courage, and the ability to connect with another human being who has lost all hope.

On May 12, 2026, Officer Phillips responded to Cochran Mill Park after receiving a call about a young man experiencing a severe mental health crisis who had stated that he wanted to end his life.

When Officer Phillips arrived, he found a 25-year-old man who was visibly overwhelmed. He was crying, shaking, and believed there was no way out of the pain he was experiencing.

Rather than escalating the encounter, Officer Phillips approached calmly. He introduced himself, listened, and treated the young man with dignity and respect. Through 30

simple conversation and genuine compassion, he began building trust with someone who, just moments before, had lost hope.

As Officer Phillips spoke with the young man, he noticed a slight bulge concealed beneath his sweatshirt. Recognizing the potential danger, he remained calm and continued talking, carefully balancing officer safety with the need to preserve the fragile rapport that had been established.

A few moments later, Detective Martin arrived and immediately joined Officer Phillips in the effort. Together, they continued speaking with the young man until they were able to help him safely to his feet.

When asked if he had any weapons, the young man broke down emotionally and told the officers that he did.

“Just get it off of me,” he said.

Officer Phillips lifted the young man’s sweatshirt and safely removed a loaded 9mm handgun from the front of his waistband. The firearm contained a full magazine with a round already chambered.

The young man later explained that he had come to Cochran Mill Park with one intention: to take his own life.

Because of the professionalism, compassion, and teamwork displayed by Officer Phillips and Detective Martin, that intention was never carried out.

No shots were fired. No force was used. No one was injured. Instead, a life was saved.

The young man voluntarily left the park with emergency medical personnel to receive the mental health care he needed.

The incident is an example of a part of modern policing that often occurs outside the public eye. Officers are

frequently called upon to recognize not only criminal behavior, but also human suffering. They must sometimes make life-and-death decisions in seconds while balancing safety, compassion, and the need to protect someone whose greatest immediate threat may be themselves.

Officer Phillips and Detective Martin exemplified that responsibility.

Their actions reflected the values of the Chattahoochee Hills Police Department and its commitment to responding to people in crisis with professionalism, empathy, and respect.

During the award presentation, Police Chief Kevin Digou told those gathered that the department may never know where the young man’s life will lead from here.

“But because of these two officers, he has the opportunity to write the next chapter,” Digou said. “And sometimes, giving someone another chapter is the greatest gift we can ever give.”

For their exceptional judgment, unwavering compassion, outstanding teamwork, and actions that directly resulted in the preservation of a human life, Detective Lee Martin and Officer Zachary Phillips were presented with the Chattahoochee Hills Police Department Lifesaving Award.

Their actions serve as a reminder that heroism does not always arrive with sirens, dramatic rescues, or acts of physical courage.

Sometimes, it begins with simply sitting down beside someone who has lost hope—and refusing to give up on them.

Chattahoochee Hills Receives 2026 Visionary City Award The City of Chattahoochee Hills was honored to officially receive the 2026 Visionary City Award during the Georgia Municipal Association Annual Convention. Although the award was originally scheduled to be presented earlier this year, City leaders were grateful to accept the recognition in person.

The statewide award recognizes cities that demonstrate innovation, strong civic leadership, collaboration, and a commitment to improving quality of life for residents.

Chattahoochee Hills was recognized for its forward-thinking approach to conservation-based planning, including its long-standing commitment to preserving greenspace while allowing thoughtful, intentional growth.

This honor reflects the hard work of the City’s staff, elected officials, community partners, and residents who continue to support Chattahoochee Hills’ vision for a strong and sustainable future.

City leaders expressed sincere appreciation to everyone whose dedication and commitment helped make the recognition possible.

“It is truly an honor to be part of a team that is committed to serving our community and working together to build a stronger future,” said Mayor Pro Tem Ruby Foster. “We are grateful for this recognition and look forward to many more accomplishments as we continue moving Chattahoochee Hills forward.”

City Government Understanding Your Property Tax Millage Rate Each year, the City of Chattahoochee Hills adopts a property tax, or millage rate, to fund the municipal services that residents rely on every day. Because many residents have questions about how the millage rate is determined and why this year's schedule is different from previous years, we wanted to provide an overview of the process.

What Is a Millage Rate?

A millage rate is the amount of property tax charged for every $1,000 of a property's taxable value. The City Council adopts the millage rate each year after considering the City's operating needs, budget priorities, and the taxable value of property within the city.

Property tax revenue is one of the City's primary sources of funding and supports essential municipal services, including: • Public safety, including police and fire protection • Road maintenance and transportation improvements • Parks, trails, and recreational facilities • Planning, zoning, and code enforcement • Public works and maintenance of City facilities • Administrative services that support daily municipal operations These revenues help ensure that the City can continue providing the high level of service our residents expect while maintaining the infrastructure and facilities that serve the community.

How Is the Millage Rate Calculated?

Before the City Council can establish a millage rate, Fulton County must complete the annual property tax digest.

The digest reflects the assessed value of taxable property throughout the City and is prepared by the Fulton County Board of Assessors.

Once the digest is finalized and certified, the City can determine the revenue that would be generated at various millage rates, calculate the rollback rate required under Georgia law, and schedule any required public hearings before the City Council adopts the final millage rate.

Because these calculations depend on an accurate and certified tax digest, the City cannot complete this process until the digest is available.

Why Isn't the City Holding Millage Hearings in August This Year?

In prior years, the City has often been able to schedule its public hearings and adopt its millage rate during August.

This year, however, the Fulton County Board of Assessors has not yet completed the work necessary to produce a certified tax digest.

Without a certified digest, the City does not have the information necessary to accurately calculate the proposed millage rate or the rollback rate required by Georgia law.

As a result, scheduling public hearings before the digest is completed would not allow the City to provide residents with accurate tax information.

Temporary Collection Order To help avoid additional delays in issuing 2026 property tax bills, the Fulton County Tax Commissioner and other county officials have requested that the Fulton County Board of Commissioners authorize a petition to the Superior Court for a Temporary Collection Order.

The Temporary Collection Order would allow the issuance of temporary tax bills before final millage rates are adopted. Under the proposal, temporary bills would generally be based on the prior year's millage rate applied to the current year's assessed property values until final tax rates are established.

The court will determine whether to grant the Temporary Collection Order and, if granted, the terms under which temporary billing may occur.

Once the Fulton County tax digest is certified, the City will complete the required calculations, hold any public hearings required by Georgia law, adopt its final millage rate, and make any necessary adjustments to tax bills in accordance with state law and the court's order.

Our Commitment to Transparency The City of Chattahoochee Hills remains committed to conducting the millage rate process in a transparent manner and in full compliance with Georgia law. Residents will receive notice of all required public hearings once the certified tax digest is available, and the City Council encourages public participation before any final millage rate is adopted.

We appreciate your patience as Fulton County completes the assessment process and will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.

New City Hall Exhibit Explores the Future of Tourism in Chatt Hills

What makes Chattahoochee Hills unlike anywhere else?

That question is at the heart of a new exhibit now on display at City Hall.

Titled “A Place Defined by Experience,” the exhibit explores the unique qualities that make Chattahoochee Hills a destination rooted in nature, culture, agriculture, and community. Through a series of storyboards, visitors are invited to see how the city’s landscapes, parks, farms, trails, arts, and local businesses come together to create memorable experiences for both residents and visitors.

Rather than focusing on individual attractions, the exhibit illustrates how connected experiences create a stronger destination. Themes include our proximity to metro Atlanta, outdoor recreation, farm-to-table experiences, arts and culture, wellness, and the importance of preserving the rural character that defines Chattahoochee Hills.

The exhibit also presents several long-term concept ideas that demonstrate how thoughtful tourism investments can enhance quality of life while supporting local businesses and protecting our natural resources. These concepts are intended to inspire conversation and illustrate future possibilities as the City continues implementing its Tourism and Marketing Strategic Plan.

Whether you’re a longtime resident or visiting City Hall for the first time, we invite you to take a few minutes to explore the exhibit. It offers a fresh perspective on how conservation, community, and economic opportunity can work together to strengthen the place we all call home.

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper paddle cleanup from the DNR 166 boat ramp down to Campbellton Park.  2026 PARKING PASSES AVAILABLE The parking passes for Cochran Mill Park are: Residents – free with an annual parking pass sticker they may pick up at city hall. Parking Pass rate from $5 to $10 per vehicle daily and from $50 to $70 annually.
