HMCF Volunteer Appreciation Night - Saturday Night Fever at the Sideyard By Pat Tanabe / Resident The Hidden Meadows Community Foundation (HMCF) hosted a lively and memorable Volunteer Appreciation Night at The Sideyard on Wednesday, August 20th. The event was a heartfelt celebration honoring the generous donors and dedicated volunteers whose support fuels the foundation’s ongoing efforts. Embracing the fun and funky spirit of the 1970s, the theme for the evening was “Saturday Night Fever,” and disco music and dance moves took center stage.

Guests arrived dressed in dazzling disco attire—sequins, big hair, jumpsuits, silky shirts, and accessories that sparkled under the lights. The venue was transformed into a dance floor paradise, complete with a disco prop featuring face cutouts for a fun photo opportunity. Attendees eagerly posed and captured memories, adding to the festive atmosphere. The evening was filled with delicious food provided by The Sideyard, which offered a variety of pizzas—including a gluten-free option—along with wings, salads, and mouthwatering chocolate chip cookies. As the music played, everyone hit the dance floor, showing off their best Saturday Night Fever moves. The dance floor was alive with energy, and at one point, a conga line weaved through the crowd, bringing even more fun and laughter to the night.
A highlight of the evening was the appearance of Santasaur, who made a surprise visit to the dance floor—this brought smiles and cheers from all. Fans of Santasaur can see him again at Toys for Tots, where he spreads holiday cheer. The event was organized with great care and enthusiasm, with special thanks to Vickey Ciarlanti for her efforts in making the night both fun and memorable. The HMCF board members present included President Michelle Zipse, Vice President Vickey Ciarlanti, Treasurer Paul Schoos, Secretary Shannon Antekeier, along with Heather Davila, Rob Enfield, Pat Tanabe, Lynn Wheeler, and Debbie Lai. Thank you to all our volunteers and donors for their hard work in support of our community. The HMCF Volunteer Appreciation Night was a fantastic evening filled with laughter, dancing, and heartfelt gratitude. It reminded everyone of the importance of community support and the joy of coming together to celebrate shared accomplishments. By Hidden Meadows Community Foundation Did you know that there are three libraries located within the Hidden Meadows community? Okay, so maybe they are better described as “little libraries”, but these public book exchanges might be able to satisfy your desire to curl up with a good read just as well as one of the big guys. A public book exchange is a delightful grassroots way to share books freely within a community. It’s often as simple as a small cabinet, shelf, or box placed in a public space—like a park, sidewalk, or outside someone’s home—where anyone can take a book or leave a book. No registration, no fees, no due dates. Just trust and a love for reading. Public book exchanges are popular worldwide and can take many forms including: •
Little Free Libraries: These are charming, often hand-decorated boxes that operate on the “take a book, leave a book” principle. There are over 200,000 of them worldwide.

Public Bookcases: Originating in Europe, especially Germany, these are weatherproof cabinets placed in accessible areas for anonymous book sharing.
•
Street Libraries: Similar concept, sometimes run by local organizations or artists, blending community engagement with literary access.
Two of our neighborhood libraries are part of a nonprofit organization appropriately named “Little Free Library” whose stated mission is to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led book-exchange boxes.
