The HeART of Escondido The HeART of Escondido

By KATI COWAN At the turn of the century, picture a German band coming down Escondido’s Grand Avenue, playing on the back of a horse drawn wagon.

This Saturday night ritual was possibly Escondido’s first form of public art.

Perhaps simple and unrehearsed, it was nonetheless a heartfelt expression of the creative spirit that continues today.

Escondido now has a world class Center for the Arts.

According to Carol Rogers, chairwoman of the Escondido Public Art Commission (PAC), we also have more art galleries than any other city in the county and a proliferation of public art.

“Escondido’s public art program has long been a source of pride and identity for the community. It’s a reflection of the city’s rich cultural heritage, the city’s vibrant present and its aspirations for the future,” states the executive summary in the new Public Art Strategic Plan for the City of Escondido.

Public Art is seen by some as a frivolous endeavor that needs to be cut from city funding during difficult economic times.

But Randy Cohen, blogger and vice president of research at Americans for the Arts, concludes that the nation’s arts and culture sector is an $878 billion industry supporting 5.1 million jobs. (ARTSBLOG, The Rebuilding Power of The Arts in Rural Communities.)

“The arts are kindling for the economy—small investments that deliver big returns. They get people out of their homes and spending money in the community. Every visit to an arts event generates $31.47 per person beyond the ticket cost in spending on meals, retail, parking, and lodging. This provides vital income to local merchants, energizes the downtown, and puts people to work,” it reads.

from Community Services to the Economic Development Department perhaps for this very reason.

The Public Art Strategic Plan adopted by the City Council in September, describes a foundational shift in the role of the Public Art Commission as protector and builder of the City’s cultural resources.

The hope is to shape Escondido into a cultural hub and art destination that would draw artists, organizations and art lovers alike, not only from the region but from around the world.

Success would also confirm that art is a significant driver and energizer of the economy.

This new strategic plan is so pivotal that it has won The Devvies 2024 Award presented by the San Diego North Economic Development Council for Excellence in economic development achievements.

Consequently, with the downtown revitalization project, one can see why a sculpture in the roundabout at Broadway and Grand is part of the plan. An allocation of $500,000 has been authorized for this and other complimentary pieces.

In January 2025 a Call to Artists will invite sculptors to present their ideas to best reflect the “Authentically Escondido” theme that the city would like to promote.

Another PAC project, Escondido Expressions, piloted in 2023/24 is inviting local artists to paint utility boxes not only in the downtown core but also in the suburbs making art accessible to all residents. To go even further, the first Art, Culture and Creativity Month is being planned for April of 2025. In line with the mandate, this 8 ESCONDIDO MAGAZINE | WINTER 2024

monthlong celebration of the arts will showcase all that Escondido has to offer.

The event will include an Indigenous Culture and Art Festival on April 19 in Grape Day Park, and a week-long photography event organized by Donna Cosentino at The Photographer’s Eye Collective—just to name a few. MAGEC (Museums and Arts Growing Escondido Culture) members will participate as will all art involved groups throughout Escondido.

MAGEC—now under the auspices of the Downtown Business Association—has always been a driving force in promoting the arts and small businesses in Escondido.

Starting out with a handful of members; MAGEC now has over 40 members comprised of not only the arts but also business and nonprofit communities. They are, in their words, “an informal group of Escondido’s thriving museums and vibrant art and culture community with the purpose of growing and developing the businesses of the participants and to promote our rich Arts, Heritage, and Educational Culture.” For more info about MAGEC, email: MAGECesco@gmail.com.

One of MAGEC’s goals was to reinvigorate what has come to be known as Second Saturday, a day to celebrate the arts each month.

Second Saturday is special for Escondido. It is a day full of surprises as artists use pop-ups to display their works along Grand Avenue; galleries have their artists’ receptions for new monthly exhibits; there is music, children’s art activities, gallery openings, mural unveilings, education opportunities, theater and more.

Esco Alley Art has hung over 70 murals that can be found in the back alleys of downtown Escondido just to the south of Grand Ave between Maple and Juniper showcasing mainly local artists. Not only do they have a gallery on Grand Avenue where you can view and purchase fine art, they offer workshops as well for children and adults.

It is their yearly art auction and main fundraiser. alike. The main concert hall has featured a range of programs from world famous entertainers to local ballet school recitals.

The art museum has regaled its visitors with stirring works of art from all genres enough to please every palate.

And although the Center is going through some growing pains and economic hardships, the hopes expressed are for a solution that will work for all and assure the ongoing success and retention of this inspiring structure and institution so that it can continue to serve the people of Escondido and beyond.

Collette’s is a true farm to table dining experience

By JOY BLESSMAN “The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change” ~Heraclitus Who is Jeannette McBrearty?

Maybe you have heard of her, she is the woman who purchased Vincent’s Restaurant in historic downtown Escondido just before the pandemic. Determined to keep the doors open for her staff, and the community, she quickly pivoted to “The Flying Toad” with street side dining and carry out service offering simple foods done well. Once it was safe to open the world again, Jeannette opened her dining room and segued to an exquisite French inspired steakhouse called “Hunsakers.” The favorite of many for date nights, birthdays, special occasions and just because.

The End right? Nope not at all.

This fall, much to the surprise of many, she changed once again! So please let me introduce you to her latest inspiration: Collette’s Collaborative Collective Cuisine, a true farm to table dining experience.

One might be curious, and ask, “Who takes a seemingly very successful restaurant and changes everything about it?” …and I mean everything. The name, the concept, the menu, the chef, and even the color of the building! That’s quite bold.

“I have always wanted a restaurant called Collette’s.

It is something that has occupied space in the back of my brain for a long while. Collette is a name that has been in my family for generations, it means Victory of the People. And we need a victory!” was Jeannette’s reply.

OK, so now would be a good time to pause and give some back story for this latest inspiration, and this need for a victory of the people. There are a few influencing components . . .

Let’s begin with 1997: there were 88,000 California farmers. In the 2020 census there were only 63,000 California farmers. We are losing farmers, local food sources at a rate of three farmers a day. That is alarming.

Most of the seeds for growing crops in the country are owned by four major companies. They get to decide what seeds and how much the seeds are. Let’s not forget the middle man (or person) who helps to sell the seeds in this competitive marketplace. The middle person gets a cut too, and this further drives the industry of who gets the seeds and for what price. This makes it difficult for the small farmer to survive and nearly impossible for them to thrive.

crops, with large food industries providing most of the food, we lost a lot of seasonality of our crops. For example, we can eat strawberries all year long, not just in “strawberry season.” Forsaking freshness, we can simply go to the grocery store and enjoy what has been flown in from around the country and the world.

While grocery stores are convenient, and important, we do sacrifice the enhanced nutritional value of local foods, which taste better because they are fresher. They are also more cost effective and environmentally sustainable. Eating seasonally, also adds a lot more complexity and nutritional depth to our diet. Losing seasonality, is one of the reasons we have seen the diversity in our gut biome decrease by a third over the past 50 years.

Highly processed foods, also play a role in that decrease.

OK, so let’s talk about our gut biome for a moment. The diversity of our gut biome is of paramount importance. It is one of the Collette’s is a true farm to table experience. things that keeps us going. It is crucial for our overall health as it plays a vital role in digestion, how we break down foods and absorb nutrients. It is important for building our immune system, produce essential vitamins, and it even impacts our mental well-being by influencing hormone production; a balanced gut microbiome is essential to protect against harmful bacteria, and can potentially reduce the risk of various diseases like diabetes, obesity and certain cancers.

In other words, our gut biome is kind of a big deal, and well worth nurturing and increasing its diversity again!

How can it be that America is one of the richest countries in the world, it is also one of the sickest countries of the world. We spend more on healthcare than most countries, yet we are dying younger than most countries.

Old World Meat Co., brings Old World flavors to Escondido

The Old World Meat Co., which opened a few weeks ago at 2209 E. Valley Parkway, is the dream of Bosko & Laura Kresovich. If you try some of their food, you may find yourself dreaming about it too!

They had been working at opening the restaurant for five years, since they first opened their meat market deli across the parking lot from their new location.

It’s called “Old World” because when you try the dishes at their restaurant you will experience flavors and spices you may not be familiar with. As Bosko says, “You taste a lot of flavors and meat that comes from the Old World,” i.e. the Balkans.

ci (ćevapčići), a grilled dish of minced meat found traditionally in the countries of southeast Europe (the Balkans). It is considered the national dish of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The burgers, a combination of beef, lamb and pork, are pljeskavica, a traditional Serbia burger recipe. They are topped with feta cheese, special spices and a mixture of roasted bell pepper and eggplant (called ajvar)—which is incredible!—and enrobed by a fluffy pita bread, kind of like you’ve seen a Greek Gyros served, although they are com22 ESCONDIDO MAGAZINE | WINTER 2024

pletely different cultures and cuisines.

They keep the menu simple. You’ll find dishes like Old World Sausage Plate, the Old World Balkan Dog or Old World Mixed Plate, along with Greek Salad, Antipasto and the Balkan Fry. They are served with toppings like kajmak (feta cream/butter spread) and ajvar, a spread made from red bell peppers and eggplant. Everything is prepared on site.

The sausages are different from most that we are familiar with in that they don’t use

“skins” to contain the sausage.

To “Americanize” the menu they have added sides such as French fries, homemade cole slaw and potato salad.

The couple, married 31 years, had never ventured into the world of restaurants before. He had been a building contractor for 37 years and she was a stay-athome mom. But in 2008, after being on by friends who had sampled some of their food that they made for their local Serbian Orthodox Church, they got into catering.

They had won a contest with 10 pounds of cooked meat.

“People loved the flavor and texture and would ask, ‘Can we buy this?’” recalls Bosko. They would do small batches for fans. This grew into larger batches and they would be recruited to do festivals.

Of course, the streets are littered with ruins of businesses whose friends told them they should open a restaurant, but the Kresovichs persevered. They first grew their catering business before opening a deli in 2019. Then a few months later COVID shut them down for a year and a half.

When they reopened they “blew through the wall” and built a kitchen.

When the old American Discount Liquor—which Bosko’s parents had built in 1973—closed, they determined to move their operation across the parking lot. They spent two years remodeling the building, which saved them many thousands of dollars in contracting.

Although a fast food drive-through makes the claim— these folks have “got the meats!” “I get a lot of people who say, ‘I haven’t had this before,” says Bosko. “ ‘It’s such a different flavor. Once they try it, they like it.’”

Bosko wouldn’t tell me what the flavors are made with, except to say, “It’s a family secret spices passed down through generations. It’s very mild but tasty.”

They also do catering and for the holidays they will do a whole hog or lamb.

Occasionally on weekends they will offer ribs, both beef and pork, flavored with their Old World spices.

Bosko added, “I love to cater to local veterans and first responders.”

My Tribute to Tribute Bands

By JOSH BOARD I’ve always loved tribute bands.

As a kid who loved music, seeing a cheesy Beatles tribute band was the only way I’d hear those songs live (as the Beatles stopped touring five years before I was born and broke up the year after my birth).

Sure, we laughed when the wig on “George Harrison” almost fell off, but hey – we had fun. At age 14, I got a friend who was a few years older to drive us to the Back Door at SDSU to see Strange Daze, a Doors tribute act. They weren’t very good but it was still fun (their guitarist went on to become a member of Wild Child, an amazing Doors tribute band).

My musician friends give me grief over this. They think bands should be doing their original material and tribute bands are lame. Yet when I took one to see Led Zepagain, he admitted the guitarist was amazing. I took another doubter to see the Atomic Punks (Van Halen), and he was blown away.

The singer of that group always says after the third song, “Look, there will always be people in the crowd that were dragged here because their girlfriends made them come. They’ll roll their eyes, saying that I’m onstage thinking I’m David Lee Roth.

I don’t. We’re just doing the songs and mannerisms of a band we love and having fun with it.”

And here are some fun facts: the original guitarist of the Atomic Punks was taken by Roth to join his band.

And the singer of Wild Child was taken by two members of The Doors to lead their band for numerous shows.

I’m not a heavy metal fan, but loved the all-female Iron Maiden tribute band, appropriately titled Iron Maidens.

I was a classic rock DJ for years, and a writer for the San Diego Reader. This enabled me to interview many musicians. One time David Crosby told me a story about hating tribute bands. He said he was playing a theater somewhere in northern California and ticket sales were bad.

He asked the manager at the venue the last time a show sold-out there.

The manager said, “A few months ago, with Wild Child.” When Crosby asked who they were, and was informed it was a Doors tribute act, he lost his mind. He told me, “The people in that town could see me! I was an actual member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash. But instead they’d rather see a person pretending to be Jim Morrison!”

(He went on to yell at me for 10 minutes for being a Doors fan, and how he hated Morrison, but I digress).

I’ve told my musician friends that are haters, it would cost $250 to see the Rolling Stones or Eagles, but seeing tribute versions of them could be as cheap as $5 a ticket (or free at many of the casinos). And you’re not sitting so far away you need binoculars.

My friend Ric Root, a great local drummer, is currently playing with Fleetwood Max. Now, I’m not much of a Fleetwood Mac fan, but when I saw them live, I became one. There’s something about hearing the songs you love live, that is so entertaining.

When I moved to Escondido a few years ago, little did I know, I’d be able to get my tribute band fix in this sleepy town. I was used to going to the House of Blues downtown, or the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. Yet

recently, I saw the show “The 21 Club” at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. We were treated to four songs from each of the musicians who died at 27 – bluesman Robert Johnson, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse. It was terrific. They have a free show with a Stevie Wonder singer/pianist coming up in February.

The Grand Ritz Theater, located on Grand Avenue in Esco, has really hit it out of the park with their tribute shows.

My wife and I were blown away with Billy Nation (a Billy Joel tribute act, not Billy Idol). There was a Pink Floyd band with 10 members, including female backup singers, a sax player, and even an inflatable pig.

We got an Elton John impersonator that was incredible. And he’s coming back.

The Pettybreakers do a great Tom Petty recreation, but I did chuckle at the bad wig. It made him look like Jeff Spicoli from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” I’ve seen them twice here.

My friend Rock ‘n Roll Peg – who was the most famous DJ at my radio station Rock 105 decades ago, is from Detroit and a hardcore Bob Seger fan. So when the Grand Ritz had “Classic Seger” she was front row dancing and recording the festivities. One fan even asked her, “Are you the singer’s wife?”

I was bummed I missed the Journey tribute, but my take is – the real Journey took a guy from the Philippines that sounded like Steve Perry to replace him in the real Journey.

Oh, and CCR hasn’t had John Fogerty in decades.

When the singer of Boston died, they recruited a guy working at Home Depot who sounded like original vocalist Brad Delp.

So for all the musicians that make fun of tribute bands…the original bands have in many cases become a hybrid of original band members and tribute artists.

So go to a show, yell for “Freebird” or “more cowbell” and have a blast.

Meet Escondido’s revolutionary feature film studio that can upend Hollywood’s grip on making films

By MICHAEL HOWARD Several weeks ago, during the dog days of summer, a small little film school located in the heart of Escondido did something revolutionary in the film industry. It premiered to the public, as a regular

part of its curriculum, a full-length feature film.

If you haven’t heard about it yet, that small little film school is John Paul Catholic University on Grand Avenue and the feature film it premiered was “No Reception,” a comedy about a son coming home to close the estate of his late father, but who encounters heartwarming and quirky surprises along the way.

A film school releasing a feature film is revolutionary because film schools do not produce feature films. They produce graduates who are taught how to make them.

“You’ll have universities where they make a feature film as a kind of post-graduation thing, where a faculty member will recruit some of the top graduates and invite into a project, but no other university is doing it the way that we’re doing it,” George Simon, the school’s Chair of Communications Media and head of the feature film program confirmed to the Escondido Times-Advocate during a recent interview.

It is a tumultuous time for film studios. In a recent report by “The Hollywood Reporter,” only one studio posted profit growth in 2023—while the others were either in the red or suffered losses in profits from previous years. Notable of these was Disney—who operated under a $666 million loss.

Streaming profits weren’t any better. Only Netflix and Warners posted a profit, while Disney, Paramount Global and NBC Universal all operated under losses.

But during their premier screening of “No Reception” at Escondido’s Grand Ritz Theatre, JP Catholic enjoyed a full house of students, family, and faculty who shouted, laughed and applauded the comedy raucously, often at scenes where only the cast and crew knew the punchline, as the rest of the crowd sat back and enjoyed a well-produced, high-production

value movie.

So how do they do it?

“The technology has gotten to a point where it really is possible to make a feature film at a really high level of production value without having massive resources,” explains Simon.

Traditional film schools are not able to produce feature films because of the cost and the time it takes. Typical Hollywood movies take about four to five years to produce and range from $65 to $100 million.

But under JP Catholic’s program, a feature film is made every two years, with the costs embedded into their curriculum along with the revenue from past films.

This is the school’s third year producing films, so “No Reception” hasn’t hit distribution yet, but it’s previous film “O, Brawling Love,” a comedy about two rival acting students forced to play “Romeo and Juliet,” is now streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video for $1.99 to rent or $4.99 to purchase.

And while it’s already streaming, the school is just starting the marketing and distribution cycle for “O, Brawling Love.”

“Once we’re ready to go to market, we’re going to go to market, and then the strategy that we have to determine internally is what kind of rights are we willing to grant to distributors,” explains Simon.

These rights can include theatrical release rights and the rights to sell the films on DVD. “The plan is to assess what our opportunities are from a distribution standpoint and then determine what’s going to be most effective for our film to maximize its exposure to an audience,” Simon says.

And who exactly is the school’s audience? If you thought Catholics, or the Christian community, think again.

“The majority of the faculty and students here do not want to make overtly Christian or Catholic films that are really on the nose and acting as kind of a sermon for the audience,” Simon says.

The idea is to produce compelling films with an underlying theme of good, according to Simon. And while faith-based films are a market, the school recognizes the impact it can have on the wider, broader market and not to mention the business side of things too.

“The business focus is so critical because we don’t want to be graduating a bunch of starving artists, right?” Simon says with a laugh.

distribution and begin filming its next project “Pickle for Pickleball,” a story about an unlikely group of elderly women who find themselves caught up in a high stakes pickleball tournament.

We are going to be fully enmeshed in that project [“Pickle for Pickleball”] through 2025 and we will get a release date for No Reception hopefully in the next three to four months,” Simon reports.

As for advice to film students, Simon recommends visiting their website jpcatholic.edu for more information about enrolling into their film program, but also, don’t forget what really matters.

“The message that I would have is to reflect on what is going to ultimately make you happy, and I don’t mean happy like you own a yacht or you win the lottery, I mean deep peace and fulfillment in the way you live your life,” he advises, saying he tells this to all his new students.

But most of all, there’s a single piece of advice Simon has. “Don’t forget to have fun!” he laughs.

Local Art Association experiences rebirth

By ANNETTE JOHNSON Since 1959, the Escondido Art Association has been a cherished cultural gem that has been a home for artists of all levels located in the heart of Escondido.

Over the years, its programs have included student education, demos for artists and monthly receptions showcasing members’ art. With a membership eager to go beyond what they had done before, but not sure how, they brought on Tokeli Baker as president and in the three years since she took the reins, boy have things changed!

Baker saw the potential to grow and expand programs and community outreach in ways the organization had not done in the past. Her vision of going beyond the gallery walls has been the catalyst for a remarkable transformation. With changes big and small, Baker has reshaped the organization to be a respected voice in Escondido supported by businesses and city leadership alike, a key member of MAGEC (Museums and Arts Growing Escondido Culture), and a support for students of all ages. These efforts have resulted in a growing membership, a diverse board of directors and new collaborations with arts organizations and businesses alike.

Under Baker’s guidance, the association has revitalized its mission to foster artistic expression and community engagement. Baker has created a welcoming atmosphere that invites both seasoned artists and curious newcomers to participate in gallery exhibitions at their “friendly little gallery on Grand.”

This renewed focus on community and artistic inclusivity has increased membership by 48% in just two years and has changed the makeup of the membership, attracting younger members who push the organization to modernize. Baker has also significantly increased the EAA’s endowment, and cultivated corporate partnerships. Even more important, Baker says that her greatest accomplishment has been to establish a strong working board of directors and a critical team of volunteers and donors who make it all possible.

“By building strong relationships with business leaders and welcoming them onto our board, we have reinvigorated EAA’s standing in the community and expanded the reach of Escondido’s local arts and culture,” Baker said.

One example of EAA’s expanded reach is the collaboration and support for Mayor Dane White as he initiates his Mayor’s Art Contest. With the upcoming launch of Escondido’s first “Arts and Culture Month” in April of 2025, the mayor has a myriad of planned events across the city, the Art Contest among them. The inaugural Mayor’s Art Contest will be juried by Escondido’s Public Art Commissioner, Carol Rogers and Mayor Dane White is personally donating the cash awards for contest winners.

“I am so excited to work with Tokeli and the EAA on this project. Having the gallery serve as the host of my first annual art contest is a testament to the support I have received from this dedicated pillar in the community,” said Mayor White.

The “Arts and Culture Month” celebration will showcase partnerships with the City of Escondido, EAA, Downtown Business Association and MAGEC. For the contest, artwork from all over North County will be accepted in a variety of mediums. Including watercolor, acrylic, oil, mixed media, photography and digital media, sculpture and more. The exhibition will run from April 9 through May 1, 2025 at the EAA Gallery.

Baker’s vision has also extended the educational programming offered by the association through their Creative Collaborative Partnership with the California Center for the Arts, offering Open Studio and Watercolor weekly courses. Both classes are weekday morning programs for adult artists. There are plans to expand to a third weekly class in the new year.

“The EAA’s relationship with the Center for the Arts is one of our most treasured experiences. What an opportunity for community-building and growth! We are so happy to provide educational programming for the vibrant art center,” says EAA President, Tokeli Baker.

Recognizing the importance of nurturing artistic talent, the EAA Team implemented a range of educational programs for all ages. In March, the gallery belongs to kids for Arts Education Month. To show its commitment to students, EAA forgoes their monthly income from the take-in of art in March by dedicating the gallery to them.

Not only do these programs equip participants with valuable skills, they also build their confidence and portfolios. The success of these education initiatives has solidified the Escondido Art Association’s reputation as a leader Kids art camp. in arts education.

In addition to these exciting programs, membership for artists at the Escondido Art Association comes with another unique perk: the Rotations program. Led by former EAA President, Byron Marler, the Rotations program offers member artists a free opportunity to show their artwork at a variety of locations throughout North County.

This additional opportunity to display their work for sale is free to members.

Rotation partners feature everything from paintings and photography to mixed media installations. The art beautifies business environments while expanding the artists’ reach. Rotation locations include the Escondido Public Library, Ritz/Grand Escondido event center, Hoorah Restaurant (Rancho Bernardo), Brunch Point Restaurant (Vista), and our newest restaurant in town, The Villa on Grand.

Another blossoming relationship in the rotation program is North Island Credit Union. Nestled within the NICU’s branch on Auto Parkway, EAA’s second gallery has quickly become a vibrant showcase for local talent and a second home.

This innovative collaboration enhances the credit union’s commitment to community engagement by providing a beautiful space for locals to enjoy and gather while also providing a platform for artists to display their work. Because of the size of the room, EAA’s members are able to showcase large pieces which cannot be displayed at the original gallery due to the limited wall space, expanding reach and visibility yet again.

The board of directors has experienced a renaissance of its own under Baker’s leadership. The president (now in her second term) actively sought to diversify the board, bringing in members with varied backgrounds and professional business acumen.

“I am most proud of the supportive relationships we are building on the board with such a diverse array of expertise and I am so proud to say that our board now has not only talented artists, but also a magazine publisher, a fundraising and grant writing specialist, business owners, and so much more,” says Baker. “This gives us an infusion of fresh ideas and perspectives that has not only strengthened the decision-making process of our team, but has also enhanced the gallery’s programming and outreach efforts.” It’s this group that has led new ideas and created new opportunities for greater visibility of EAA. As a result of all of these efforts, the Escondido Art Association stands as a testament to the power of visionary leadership, demonstrating how a committed individual can propel growth, teamwork, and creativity, while fostering the community spirit of a “small town” atmosphere like that of Escondido.
