It’s a privilege to address you in this special edition of Escondido Magazine. I encourage you to explore every page to discover the amazing stories and remarkable people who make our city great.
Lately, there’s been significant focus on challenges facing Escondido, such as homelessness and financial issues. While these are important, I believe it’s equally vital to highlight the positive developments happening around us.
Have you visited the mall recently? The new management has revitalized it with innovative tenants like Kids Zone and a family entertainment center coming soon to the old Nordstrom’s building. The addition of The Grand Comedy Club will make it a vibrant destination for families once again. If you have not visited in a while head on down!
Downtown Escondido is also on the rise. With Palomar Heights set to lease soon and plans for new developments, including nearly 100 residential units on Lot 1 behind Filippis, we’re poised for economic growth. The Grand Avenue Vision Project is enhancing the area, with Phase 2 fully funded construction will begin the week after the close of Cruisin Grand, to widen sidewalks and introduce roundabouts at the intersections of Broadway and Juniper. The third and final phase has yet to be fully funded. The Deputy Mayor Christian Garcia and I went to Washington D.C. to advocate for additional funding through our Congressional and Senate Representatives. Keep your fingers crossed!
Let’s not forget Escondido’s AgX initiative, which will bring Agriculture Technology, a new industry, to our city. We’re also embarking on the renovation of nearly a dozen parks, and fulfilling dreams like the long-awaited splash pad.
Lastly, I want to commend the dedicated team at City Hall. From the City Manager to every staff member, their hard work and dedication are commendable. They deserve our appreciation for all they do with limited resources. I’ve been impressed and inspired over the last eighteen months by their dedicated service and focus on improving Escondido.
It’s been my honor to serve you. I look forward to what lies ahead for Escondido!
Warm regards,
Dane M. White City of Escondido - Mayor

Escondido native Anna Adams has been named Pastry Chef at Georges at the Cove in La Jolla. The 2014 Orange Glen High School graduate replaces Aly Lyng, who departed for a position at downtown’s Pendry San Diego.
Adams was inspired to bake at a young age while visiting her uncle’s bakery in Ruiz, Nayarit, Mexico. She began working at Georges as an intern in 2015 while attending Art Institute of California – San Diego. Adams then became a pastry cook in 2016, an assistant to Lyng in 2019, and she was named Pastry Sous Chef in 2022.
For nearly a year during her time as Lyng’s assistant, Adams also had a stint with North Park’s Blackmarket Bakery, working overnight shifts in addition to her daily schedule at Georges.
Adams, 28, joins Foshee and Executive Chef Masa Kojima on the kitchen’s leadership team.
“I am honored to take the reins from Chef Aly, who is a trusted mentor and friend,” Adams said. “She and her predecessor Chef Lori [Sauer] were instrumental in helping me hone my craft. I am forever grateful to them, and I going to make them proud by continuing to wow our guests.”
Adams earned an Associate of Science degree in Baking and Pastry from The Art Institute in 2018. Her late grandmother Jean Adams pushed her to pursue a career in baking and helped pay her way through culinary school.
“Anna caught our eye when she took that second job and worked around the clock – all without skipping a beat,” Foshee said. “Hard work pays off, to be sure, and I am always excited to promote well-deserving individuals from within.”

Nestled in the Country Club area of Escondido is the best little chicken joint around. Chicken Lisa’s and Your Mexican Favorites is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Escondido. The people who live in the northern part of Escondido probably want to keep
this little gem a secret, but the secret’s out!
Chicken Lisa’s is not your average fast food restaurant in Escondido. They are a family-owned business and have been for over 17 years. When you’re craving charbroiled chicken or your Mexican favorites, they have it all.
It’s a popular restaurant to hang out with family and friends and also enjoy high quality food at an affordable price. They offer dine-in, take-out and catering services.
Their front patio has undergone a beautiful facelift, providing even more room and a picturesque setting for customers to dine in. If you have a special occasion coming up, you can reserve space for 15 to 25 people and enjoy the full service from Frankie’s beer and wine bar. It’s the “Cheer’s” of the neighborhood, if you will.
Go check it out at 555 West Country Club Ln Escondido, CA 92026. Visit their website to see their menu. Chickenlisa.com

ESCONDIDO RESIDENT ALEX NYE TAKES A SELFIE DURING HIS JUNE 3 AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR (NBC) APPEARANCE WHERE HE QUALIFIED FOR THE SEMI-FINALS. PHOTO COURTESY ALEX NYE
ESCONDIDO PEOPLE OF NOTE
By MICHAEL HOWARD
Escondido resident Alex Nye remembers the first time he seriously considered competing for NBC’s obstacle course reality show American Ninja Warrior. He and his brother were fans and decided for his brother’s bachelor party to attempt a ninja course at a New Jersey gym.
“We were kind of naturals based on our history and our monkeyish background—the things that we like to do—so yeah that was kind of an opening moment that maybe I could actually pursue this,” he told the Escondido Magazine in a recent interview.
Now Nye is a regular on the program, having appeared in three previous seasons, this year being his fourth. During the program’s 16th season opener on June 3, he qualified for the semi-finals round for the third time in his career. But not without some drama.

“I did have a pretty dramatic near fall on obstacle four where I slipped in one hand and somehow recovered with one arm,” Nye said with a bit of relief.
Originally from upstate New York, Nye says he has always been a bit of the “monkeyish” type.
Nye explains: “I grew up in Upstate New York on a bunch of land. So we kind of lived out in the middle of nowhere. So my brother and I were very outdoorsy kids. Cable TV didn’t play much video games, so we spent all of our time outside climbing trees, snowboarding, skateboarding, all these just fun activities. My dad made us a rock climbing wall out of our chimney and he’d to take us rock climbing. And so, it’s kind of just in my nature to be like a climber and be outdoorsy and adventurous.” Those types of activities led him down a path of alternative sports such as rock climbing and parkour, the urban obstacle course racing. But the big shift really came when he moved to California. He first lived in the Santa Barbara area where there was a gym that featured rock climbing and gymnastics. There, he trained with fellow rock climbers, gymnastics athletes and parkour enthusiasts.
“It wasn’t formal training,” Nye emphasized, “it was just kind of learning-through-doing as an adult – just really a love and a passion for creative movement, and things like that. And through all those things this kind of old idea of trying ninja became more realistic.”
Then, in 2018, he took the plunge and competed in the season

ESCONDIDO
10 show.
“Everything up to the fifth obstacle went really well and it kind of played to my strengths,” Nye recalled. “But then the fifth obstacle was a version of the flying bar. It was the lightning bolts, but that is where I had never really done a flying bar at that point. And so that’s what took me out,” he said. “I fell in the water.”
Despite the fall, he still qualified for the semi-finals his first year and competed the very next night, but was disqualified when his foot skimmed the water during the very same obstacle - the flying bars. And as the saying goes, if you don’t learn from history, you’re doomed to repeat it.
“My second season I came across another flying bar type obstacle and unfortunately, I didn’t learn my lesson from the first time,” he admitted.
Not one to give up, he used the lesson to formulate a plan.
“That experience is what kind of motivated me to build my own course,” he explained. Around that time Nye was looking to buy a home in San Diego and came across the property in Escondido
he eventually purchased in 2020.
“So, the very first thing I built once I had my house here was the Flying Bar and just repped that for a few weeks,” Nye said. “And before I knew it, it became one of my biggest strengths because I got really good at it. So now, I was able to conquer that weakness and apply that moving forward to the show.”
Nye’s obstacle and training course in his backyard does more than just give him and fellow professional ninja competitors a place to train. He opens it up for amateurs and kids too as a way to promote the sport.
“Whoever is available or wants to come by and play around,” is invited. And while, “sometimes it’s like just a couple of training buddies of mine, other times it’s like a bunch of kids.” Nye says to visit his Instagram page “the.jungle.sd” to learn more about visiting his obstacle course.
When not training or competing for the show, Nye owns a fine art and architectural photography business as well as being a licensed drone operator. “I fly drones,” he explains, “I’d say a lot of it is in the architectural industry. So I’ll shoot the final beauty

shots of a building for architects or developers and time lapses.” Those interested can see his work at alexnyeart.com.
As Nye and American Ninja Warrior fans await his next appearance on the show airing August 12 at 8 p.m. on NBC or streaming on Peacock, he is keeping busy by qualifying for various other ninja league competitions, appearances on commercials and getting ready for the next season which begins accepting applications in July.
“Hopefully they’ll let me on the show again,” Nye says. “I’ll take another stab at the show and see how it goes.”
Meantime, stay tuned. Sources at NBC say our hometown ninja is no flash in the pan. They recommend watching this season to see exactly how far he goes in this year’s competition.
“This season is going to be really fun,” Nye says, “I’m super excited— I think it’s going to be fun for people to watch.”

ESCONDIDO ROTARIANS SEE A RAPTOR AT THE SAFARI PARK UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. THIS PROGRAM IN MAY HIGHLIGHTED ROTARY’S INFLUENCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PARK FROM ITS BEGINNING.

By COLLEEN MACKINNON
The creation of the San Diego Wild Animal Park is a testament to the power of collaboration and vision, largely driven by members of the Rotary Clubs of San Diego and Escondido.
In the early 1950s, Dr. Charles Schroeder, zoo director and San Diego Rotary Club Member, and his colleagues recognized a need for additional space to house surplus and roaming animals, and conceived a vision that would expand beyond traditional zoo confines. Clayburn LaForce of Alpine and the San Diego Rotary provided the crucial connection to a location below the Sutherland Dam, laying the groundwork for a revolutionary approach to wildlife conservation.
By 1965, the integration of this site into Escondido’s master plan, supported by a citizen study committee and research from the Stanford Research Institute, began to shape the future San Pasqual Zoo project. This endeavor, underscored by a commitment to education, conservation, and entertainment, highlighted the Rotary’s influence in pioneering new community assets.
As construction commenced, Anderson Borthwick, named Mr. San Diego in 1957 by San Diego Rotary, played pivotal roles in securing funding, ensuring the project’s financial stability, and integrating it deeply into the community’s fabric. The subsequent years saw significant Rotary involvement in navigating municipal challenges and fostering public support, which was instrumental in realizing the park’s construction and broadening its impact.
Community engagement efforts, led by figures such as J. Ray Baker of the Escondido Rotary Club, propelled the park forward through initiatives like the Proposition B bond issue, which funded further development. These efforts showcased the Rotary’s capacity to
mobilize community resources and influence local infrastructure, such as adjusting State Highway 78 to serve the park and its visitors better.
Moreover, Rotary Clubs didn’t just support the zoo in building a park; they used it as a platform to enhance international relationships and support local communities. Programs like hosting a Japanese study team and the American Host-Meet the Americans program leveraged the park’s attractions to enrich cultural exchanges and understanding. Locally, initiatives such as outings for handicapped youth and community events like auctions to name baby animals at the park have woven the Wild Animal Park into Escondido’s social and cultural tapestry.
The journey to the park’s grand opening, marked by community-driven events and a dedication ceremony that navigated unexpected challenges with humor and grace, reflected the enduring spirit and commitment of the Rotary members. Their unwavering dedication brought the Wild Animal Park to fruition. It set a precedent for how Rotary Clubs can push the boundaries of what is possible, building more than just physical structures—they build community, foster education, and bridge cultures. Through initiatives ranging from altering highways to accommodate growth, facilitating international cultural exchanges, and supporting diverse community needs, Rotary members demonstrated that monumental achievements are within reach with collective effort and shared vision. This narrative celebrates past successes and inspires future generations of Rotary members to continue exploring innovative ways to make a substantial impact in their communities and beyond.

As we stand at the threshold of our second year together, I am filled with immense joy and gratitude for the incredible progress we have made. When we embarked on this journey, we envisioned a future where our community thrived on engagement, collaboration, and shared success. Today, I am thrilled to say we are well on our way to making that vision a reality.
In our first year, we set ambitious goals. Through your unwavering dedication and collective effort, we have not only met but exceeded many of these targets. Our community has come together in ways that have been truly inspiring, demonstrating that when we work as one, there is no limit to what we can achieve.

lenges, but we will also discover new opportunities. By continuing to support one another and working collaboratively, we will achieve even greater heights.
I am confident that this coming year will be marked by further advancements, deeper community connections, and events that will leave a lasting positive impact. Let us embrace this new chapter with enthusiasm, determination, and a spirit of unity.
Thank you for your hard work, your dedication, and your belief in
our shared vision. Together, we will make this second year even more remarkable than the first.
Here’s to another year of success and growth!
Sincerely,
Deanna Contreras Smith Madam Chairman

THE ESCONDIDO HISTORY CENTER’S DISPLAY AT NORTH COUNTY MALL
THE SECOND FLOOR, ACROSS FROM BATH AND BODY WORKS.

Escondido History Center - Executive Director
How it started....
Today, the collection of historic buildings located in Grape Day Park between Broadway Avenue and Escondido Boulevard is known as the Escondido History Center, but our story goes back to February 1956 and an organization known as the Escondido Historical Society.
The organization was initially founded with support and sponsorship from the Escondido Women’s Club, focusing on the preservation and interpretation of Escondido’s history. It went on to be formally registered with the state of California as a non-profit on June 28, 1956.
At its founding and in the decade that followed, the Escondido Historical Society had no formal headquarters. In fact, had it not been for the efforts of Mrs. R.C. Mathes, we would not have our office, which is located inside the building that served as Escondido’s first public library until 1910.
Built in 1895, the small yellow building was located on the corner of E. Grand Avenue & Hickory Street. After Carnegie Library was built and began operating as Escondido’s primary library, the building went on to serve as a private residence and business office. Through extensive research, Mrs. R.C. Mathes located the building and notified the owner, Mrs. Margaret Stewart, to inform the Historical Society if the status of the building ever changed. In 1971,

ESCONDIDO HISTORY CENTER DUO (LEFT) EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CYNTHIA CASTAÑEDA AND ASSISTANT DIRECTOR HANNAH RAMIREZ, WITH THE MUSEUM COMPLEX BEHIND THEM. TO THE RIGHT IS THE VICTORIAN HOUSE. STRAIGHT BACK IS THE CURRENTLY INACTIVE BLACKSMITH HOUSE AND THROUGH THE FENCE YOU CAN SEE THE TRAIN STATION.
the building was slated to be demolished after the land it was built on was leased. Through negotiation, the building was donated to the City of Escondido and relocated to Grape Day Park. Since then, the building has served as the Escondido History Center’s main office. Meantime, what was initially one historic building in Grape Day Park has grown to four historic buildings and a replica.
Today, the Escondido History Center comprises the Santa Fe Train Depot (1888), Tom Bandy General Blacksmithing (1993 replica), Penner Barn (circa 1907), Hoffman House (1890) and the former Escondido Public Library (1895).
Where we are and what is next....
As we approach a new age, it is important to show what has changed at the Escondido History Center, beginning with the reopening of the Victorian Hoffman House, in February 2024 after an extended closure. This would

not have happened without the dedication of our current Escondido History Center team and our volunteers, Courtney Cabral and Efrén Pedroza, who have taken on the challenge of presenting the building’s history to modern day audiences. Currently, the house is open on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month but is contingent on available volunteers. For that reason, we recommend you visit our website or social media accounts for possible updates.
Following the topic of change, Tom Bandy General Blacksmithing is currently undergoing an extensive

remodel. But our intention is to reopen it in the coming months as part teaching facility and part living museum, allowing the public the opportunity to interact with our docents and step into an early 1900’s blacksmith shop. Aside from our onsite changes, a large goal is improving the visibility of the Escondido History Center by increasing our social media presence. Our social platforms are dedicated not only to history center information or updates, but also sneak peeks into what we house, including artifacts and photographs. It is the perfect way to combine visibility with fun and learning, whilst connecting with the younger generation to increase the community’s love for Escondido’s history.
In addition, earlier this year we were graced with the opportunity to partner with the North County Mall and its marketing manager, Veeya Salvaggio, by displaying some of our historic photographs; giving shoppers a glimpse of what is available at the Escondido History Center.

• Have you lost your Employer Health Plan?
• Are you about to turn 65?
• Have you recently moved to San Diego County?

The original exhibit consisted of large photographic prints, and accompanying descriptions, but has since been upgraded to a joint photograph and artifact exhibition. Focused on the themes of education in Escondido and the late 1800’s, the exhibit is currently on display on the 2nd floor of the North County Mall across from Bath and Body Works. This exhibit is contingent on available space and if the status changes, updates would be provided through our website and social accounts.
As the Escondido History Center moves forward, future and past accomplishments would not have been achieved without the support of our current team, donors, members and patrons. Their contributions have helped us get to where we are and will allow us to continue. For that, we are grateful and are excited to move forward.
