Escondidans get a chance to watch a movie being filmed

BY JOSH BOARD As a movie critic for over 30 years, I’ve seen thousands and thousands of films. I was at a party at James Cameron’s house where I saw props in his backyard from movies he made.

But I’ve only ever seen one movie being made. I was at a movie in Mira Mesa with friends and as we walked out, another friend who recognized me came over to tell me that a Sylvester Stallone movie was being filmed on Miramar Road at the pyramid building. It was around 11:30 p.m. so we didn’t think they’d still be filming, but they were.

We ended up standing there for two hours, watching as they filmed the same scene over and over. A ‘60s muscle car was driving through the front door with glass going everywhere. It was a stuntman, not Stallone, driving said vehicle. The door would be replaced, and they’d do it again, filming from a different angle. It’s amazing that we got bored and left before they were done, and it was merely a 30 second scene in the film. It makes you realize just how much money can be wasted making a movie.

A professor I had in college told us how she was obsessed with Clint Eastwood and she found out he was filming in Carmel. She went and was an extra and was thrilled when Eastwood kept yelling to her and calling out. Then she realized it was just for him to snap that she was ruining the shot by standing in the wrong place.

A friend told me about watching “Tin Cup” (Kevin Costner) being filmed. And he and his friend yelling out to Cheech Marin (of Cheech & Chong fame) about pot, and at one point they pulled out grass from the golf course and yelled for him to try to smoke it.

Cheech angrily got into a golf cart and drove over to yell at the guys because they were ruining the shot with their yelling. When they expressed that they were just big fans and trying to be funny, Cheech lightened up and took photos and signed autographs with them.

Filmmaker writer/director, Hussain Ahmed, who is making part of “The Night the Line Was Crossed” in Escondido.

I heard about a movie that will be filming in Escondido in March, and while it may not be the film that introduced the world to Sandra Bullock (as “Demolition Man” did), it’s your chance to watch a movie be made and possibly be an extra.

Word got to me that a movie was going to be filming on Grand Avenue. I talked to Sabrina Covington, a local Realtor, and she said, “I had made friends with Loretta from the new business ‘The Prism and Pendulum’ and gave her my business card at some point.

“Thomas from the production crew walked into the store and asked if there was anyone that had a vacant building where they could film. She gave him my card, he called, and I told him I had the perfect vacant building for him, which is 224/228 E. Grand. We toured the building and they also needed a home, so I offered mine. Currently, neither of those will be in the movie but it opened the door for me to be able to audition for a part.”

She added, “I’m currently playing a receptionist, and hopefully will be filming in 8 ESCONDIDO MAGAZINE | SPRING 2025

City Hall. It will double as a luxury hotel lobby. My daughter will be in that scene as a hotel patron. I feel like I’m really lucky to live in a town that feels so collaborative. It reminds me of my hometown in Shreveport, Louisiana.”

I talked with the writer/director, Hussain Ahmed, who’s been making movies for a decade now. He told me “The Night the Line Was Crossed” is about a Middle Eastern U.S. Army veteran who suffers from PTSD. Ensnared between rampant xenophobia and his community’s hostility, he gives a new meaning to his life by rescuing a young working girl.

I asked if it was hard getting permits and permission from the city for filming and he said it’s gone smoothly so far.

When I inquired about the cast, he told me, “We have great talent across the board, including four time Emmy winner Jade Harlow and Ken Davitian.”

I asked Ahmed what made him decide to film in Escondido and he said, “I was filming a scene in a studio in San Diego last year. I had a few extra days so I took a ride

down here and fell in love with the setting of the city.”

The premise of his movie reminded me of “Black Snake Moan” with Samuel Jackson and Christina Ricci. I was wondering if he had seen that, but didn’t want him to think I was implying he borrowed any ideas. I instead asked what his favorite movies were and what inspired him to become a filmmaker. He replied, “One of my favorite films ever is “12 Angry Men” which inspired me to be a filmmaker. “There Will Be Blood,” “Collateral” and “13 Samurai” are also up there.”

When I asked if local residents could be extras he said, “Yes. We will need more extras. Filming will be from March 11 until the 25th.”

Local art zealot becomes art commission chair

By KATI COWAN Carol Rogers’s love of art has created a “MAGEC” place.

Her passion united artists and those involved in the arts, leading to the creation of the Museums & Arts Growing Escondido Culture (MAGEC) organization, which has been pivotal to the expansion of the arts in Escondido.

After nine years of hard work and dedication to the arts, her appointment as chairwoman of the Public Art Commission (PAC), is more than magic and comes as a significant milestone on her journey that has led her back to her roots.

Born in Escondido, Rogers grew up in Detroit in a housing project where everyone worked for a better life and took care of each other. This provided her with valuable first-hand experience of the support that can exist within a caring community that she has fallen back on throughout her life.

In 2004, she moved to San Diego.

But, for Carol, Escondido was the art-focused town and the perfect place to locate her business. This is where she decided to etch her mark, and it would be nothing short of unforgettable!

In 2015, she opened Stone and Glass on Second Avenue with her husband, glass artist James Stone.

Looking for ways to become connected and to promote their business, Rogers didn’t waste any time in reaching out to the Chamber of Commerce and subsequently to Visit Escondido as soon as Stone and Glass opened their doors. With the help of Visit Escondido, Rogers was introduced to a handful of people who were either artists or affiliated with the arts. She began meeting with the group regularly.

It was a diverse collection of individuals, each with their own needs and goals, but all shared a common desire to restore Escondido as a vibrant arts and culture center.

Once thriving, the area had fallen into decline due to various political and economic challenges.

They quickly discovered the ideal title for their assembly: they named it MAGEC. That opened the door to a cascading series of events and projects, the result of which we see to this day. And they have only just begun.

MAGEC, which began with just 12 members, now has over 40 and continues to grow under Rogers’s leadership. The group has become a central hub for the arts in Escondido and is showing signs of expanding to other cities in North County. They continue to hold monthly meetings to discuss and plan projects and activities that focus on the arts.

“We are an informal group of Escondido’s thriving museums and vibrant arts and culture community with the purpose of building and growing the participants and to promote our rich arts heritage and educational culture,” said Rogers.

Rogers, along with the MAGEC participants, have reinstated the “2nd Saturday” event. This monthly celebration offers a variety of cultural experiences on the second Saturday of each month. Activities include art gallery receptions, theater performances, museum exhibitions, individual artist pop-up displays, and family-friendly art activities and workshops, all taking place throughout the day.

COVID struck. Everything came to a dead halt. Still, MAGEC members met and planned on ZOOM, and magic continued to happen.

In the words of Thoreau, “This world is but a canvas to our imagination.”

A group of artists proved this to be true when COVID’s gray gloom descended on the city.

Validating Rogers’s belief that the arts bring people together and lifts spirits, two artists from MAGEC, Suzanne Zanniki Nicolaisen and Jinx Lennon, recognized an opportunity to transform the dull barriers set up along Grand for safe outdoor dining.

The pair quickly organized a group of artists to invite and encourage community members to contribute their own paint strokes to these structures.

The once concrete grey barriers became vibrant canvases filled with colorful images. People were having fun and smiling again— despite the ongoing challenges of the epidemic.

This initiative exemplified community art and support at its finest and has come to be known as the “Coloring Book of Hope.”

It earned the prestigious Helen Putnam Award for Excellence, given by the League of California Cities for outstanding efforts and innovative programs that enhance the quality of life and services in communities.

Creativity often sparks more creativity; one project can inspire another, and perhaps art, much like an epidemic, is contagious.

Heather Moe of Design Moe Kitchen & Bath had always envisioned art murals along the alley wall behind her business on Grand Avenue. This dream led to the founding of Esco Alley Art, which established a committee of five members, including Rogers, and which perhaps was fueled by the painted barriers.

town Escondido.

It is an outdoor Art Gallery consisting of murals of various sizes painted by mostly local artists who donated time and talent to further embellish the city.

Always on the lookout for new and interesting art endeavors, it was Rogers’s idea to bring the America Connects West Mural Mosaic’s Global Roots project to Escondido in collaboration with Esco Alley Art and the Downtown Business Association (DBA) of which Rogers is a member.

The Mural Mosaic’s Global Roots work is right down Rogers’s alley.

It is a distinctive enterprise to unite people from around the world through the power of art.

With each piece of the mosaic painted by different local artists and some from all over the continent, the piece is truly an expression of unity through the joy of art. It is located just off Maple Street Plaza and is a glorious testimonial to the project’s goals. With this, Escondido is further established as an international art destination.

And there’s more.

Rogers’s involvement and representation with the DBA has been crucial for the arts in Escondido. She recognizes the beneficial relationship between the arts and businesses and how each can support the other.

For this reason, Rogers is pleased that the Public Art Commission is now under the Economic Development Department’s oversight.

Spann, received the 2024 Excellence in North County Economic Development award—commonly known as a DEVVIE. This recognition honors the plan’s efforts in uniting stakeholders to enhance cultural expression while also creating economic opportunities for local artists and businesses.

The plan delineates the role of the PAC and all public art-related activities for the coming year.

Among them are the call to artists to propose and create a sculpture for the roundabout on Grand Avenue, further painting of utility boxes, and Rogers’ soon-to-be-realized vision of a month-long dedication to arts and culture in April of this year with a myriad of arts-related events and activities.

A self-described doer with a background in accounting and psychology, Rogers had worked in a construction-related industry. She started as a front desk clerk and, in nine years, rose to Vice President of regional operations.

She brings this type of go-getter energy to her position and to the citizens of Escondido she serves.

“I am a systems person,” said Rogers. “I get things done, but while I do that, I am always looking for a better way to do it down the road.”

Escondido and its artists can look forward to an exciting, action-packed year with innovations and new systems in place to streamline public art and expand on Escondido’s ambitions to be known as the art and culture center of North County and beyond.

With Rogers at the helm, we can all believe in MAGEC.

nization, successfully campaigned for the State of California to recognize and celebrate the arts by declaring April as Arts, Culture, & Creativity Month (ACCM).

This month-long free event offers resources, and advocacy opportunities across the state, aimed at engaging supporters of, and raising awareness about the arts and its impact within communities.

In 2024, the Escondido Public Art Commission (PAC) and City Council adopted a plan for an Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month. The goal is to stimulate interest and make it easy and educational for residents and visitors to participate and discover all that Escondido has to offer.

Emphasizing that “artwork is real work,” the city along with the PAC are building on the belief that artists are essential workers.

Artists significantly contribute to community pride, placemaking, health, education, and economic development vital to Escondido’s well-being and economic prosperity.

Escondido takes pride in its well-established, diverse and inspired ethos.

According to PAC Chair Carol Rogers, there are more arts organizations that support hundreds of artists in Escondido with numerous associations also offering youth programs, internships, and scholarships than many other California cities of similar size Among them, The Escondido Art Asso-

ciation, established in 1959, began with a mission of enriching the community through art. They later opened a gallery on Grand Avenue to support their artist members, hosting monthly shows open to artists of all levels.

The California Center for the Arts, established in 1994, serves as a vibrant cultural hub that enriches lives, fosters creativity, and empowers communities through special events, transformative performances and museum exhibitions.

The Escondido Arts Partnership (EAP) on the corner of Juniper Street & Grand Avenue, founded in 1995, aims to strengthen and enrich the community through the power of the arts. EAP provides a space for artists and the community to explore and appreciate creativity through exhibitions, sales, education and events The Queen Califia Magical Circle Sculpture Garden in Kit Carson Park, opened in 2003. It is the only American sculpture garden of its kind and the last major international project created by Niki de Saint Phalle—attracting visitors from around the world.

Distinction Gallery, located at 317 E. Grand Ave., opened in 2004. It is renowned for its extensive collection of pop surrealism, highly detailed figurative art, and Western-style oil paintings.

ArtHatch—at the same location, provides

affordable, juried exhibition and studio spaces for local painters and creative small businesses. Teen artists get free exhibition space, supplies, and education.

The Photographer’s Eye Collective, located at 326 E. Grand Ave. presents high-level works by photographers from around the world.

Finally, Esco Alley Art, established in 2021, creates outdoor gallery spaces for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to Escondido.

To promote participation the PAC is funding nine projects celebrating ACCM throughout April. The recipients are: 1) ArtHatch for hosting an April Arts Showcase titled “Spring in So Cal” offering a mini succulent in a pot to the first 60 people in attendance 2) Esco Alley Art and Downtown Business Association for completing a Community Unity School Initiative project working with Elementary and High School students from Calvin Christian School under the leadership of artist Suzanne Zanniki Nicolaisen.

Several teams of children guided by teachers will compete to develop a concept for a mural. The teams will present their proposal to a panel of judges who will select a winner. All proposals will be on display at H Brothers. Prize money will go to the winning piece, and it will go onto the wall of John Paul the Great Catholic University’s administrative building next to the Global Roots mural off Maple Square.

5) Escondido Choral Arts Foundation and California Center for the Arts for hosting First Wednesday at The Center Concert Hall highlighting the Center Chorale, Pacific Coast Chorale, The Center Children’s Chorus, City Ballet Orchestra, Cinballera Dance Company, esteemed soloists, and professional ensembles.

In addition to the events listed, MAGEC (Museums and Art Growing Escondido Culture) group is planning a full month of activities, including art scavenger hunts, guided sculpture and mural walks, educational opportunities, pop-up art galleries and shows, hands-on art activities, and, of course, the 2nd Saturday Art Walk.

L&L HAWAIIAN BARBECUE:

It’s barbecue, but with an Aloha twist

By DAVID ROSS Got a hankerin’ for the taste of the Islands, brah? The Hawaiian Islands, that is? Then look no further than the justopened L&L Hawaiian Barbecue.

When the old Rubio’s location became available, franchise co-owner Alix Soto snapped it up. Now L&L Hawaiian Barbecue has opened right in the middle of the action: Vineyard Square off East Valley Parkway, near the big Home Depot, 1485 E Valley Pkwy, Suite G. Soto and Erwin Corpuz are partners in the venture. They own several other L&L franchise locations, including one in San Diego State University, El Cajon, Point Loma, Carmel Mountain and San Marcos.

Here is a variation on Biscuits & Gravy, except that it’s called Loco Moco (a combination of hamburger, gravy, and egg over rice)—very tasty and hearty.

A plate lunch with BBQ mix, rice and macaroni salad.

Soto, who is 32, has been in the business since he was 16—when he started as a dishwasher and worked his way up. His partner Corpuz, who has been his mentor in the business, “taught me everything.” Soto’s first location was in Nashville, Tennessee and he later ran a franchise in Fresno. “I definitely love the job,” he told Escondido Magazine: “It’s hard work but I’m working with a lot of people I have worked with for years.”

L&L is known for the value, says Soto, which starts with making everything from scratch. Not to mention the very generous portions included in one of the “plate lunches” which you can easily make more than one meal out of. The Katsu Plate is the most popular menu item, but I could easily develop a lot of personal favorites, particularly any dish that includes the savory macaroni salad as a side.

“We’ve had a really good reception since we opened,” said Soto, who lives within walking distance of his franchise.

Which is good, because he spends a lot of time there! He has been able to hire quite a few local people—but also pulled some from the other franchises.

“A lot of people say they have never tasted it before,” he said. The menu includes traditional items such as SPAM Musubi, which is a variation on sushi and yes, is made with SPAM. I have to admit that I liked it! They call it the “Hawaiian Power Bar.” The meats of the Katsu dishes, such as the Garlic Chicken Katsu, (fried and then tossed in garlic sauce) are extremely flavorful, a very moist and tender.

One thing is for sure, you won’t leave hungry or unsatisfied.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue was founded in 1952 by Eddie Flores, who is still active in the business, and who has also been a mentor to Soto. “He’s always on the move,” he says.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue is open seven days a week, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., except for Thursday-Saturday when hours are 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

vironmentally friendly and artistic way.

For Leahy there is value in the old and she sees her work as holistic preservation of what we have done in our lives.

“As we get older, our culture gets older, we lose sight of where we came from,” said

Leahy. “During the horrendous fire in Altadena, it was so sad to see all the historical treasure and memories associated with them that these people were losing.”

Leahy grew up in historic Old Montreal, Canada, in a Brownstone which was the starting point of her infatuation with old architecture.

A family move to San Diego into a Craftsman-style home brought her to furthering her fascination for classic old buildings.

Craftsman-style homes are also known as Arts and Crafts homes.

The craftsman style originated in Britain in the late 19th century and was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement that emphasized handcrafted goods over mass-produced items. The style highlights the beauty of natural construction materials and handmade shapes.

This style was popular in Southern California and became known as the “California Bungalow.” Other Craftsman-style home types found in California and the northern United States are the Foursquare and Tudoresque styles, and the Prairie style is mainly found in the Chicago area and the Midwest.

In her work, Leahy strives to preserve the historic look of such dwellings all while upgrading them with little modern touches she calls her secret nuggets. These touches can be as simple as a straight line replacing a curved one to introduce a little modern into the traditional.

With over 20 years of knowhow, Leahy welcomes any Interior Design project and if her customer is amenable, she will suggest ways to restore and refurbish what they have with flare.

Leahy lives by her three R’s rule: re-using, re-purposing, recycling. She always encourages homeowners to refurbish and recycle good quality used construction material.

“There is just a lot of waste, said Leahy.”

Thirty percent of what is in the landfill is construction debris. This is a big no-no!

If you take items out of your house, you can sometimes re-purpose it or Habitat for Humanity might take it, and you can have a write-off.”

Leahy shops at various salvage companies to find some of the materials she uses.

They will take construction discards like vintage tiles and will sell them at a fraction of the cost.

Leahy often works on historic homes under the California Mills Act, like the ones in the Old Escondido Historic District.

for homeowners voluntarily declaring qualifying homes as historic structures. Under the act homeowners agree to restore and maintain the property to historic standards.

“As charming as these historic districts are you have so stay within their parameters,” said Leahy.

She knows these historic designated homes are subject to many city design guidelines if upgrades or repairs are needed. For instance, the City of Escondido requires maintaining traditional architectural features, landscape patterns, and building orientation.

It stipulates using traditional building materials, even for fences, walls, porches, doors, windows, roofs and following site planning criteria for building setbacks and more.

Leahy recalls one historic district in San Diego County where the exact paint and color match was required to repaint the front door.

Her knowledge of Craftsman style materials, identifying and locating them even when they are no longer made, along with the ability to work with Historic Districts and city regulations is evident.

After graduating from Mesa College, she soon discovered a knack and interest in remodeling kitchens and bathrooms.

She joined the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and has been serving as a board member for 15 years.

In 2024 she remodeled a laundry room for which she won the NKBA Star Design Award for Best Other Room.

or even make it eclectic,” said Leahy. “I can mix traditional with modern and even more. Say you like Bohemian, Traditional and Chinese. Maybe there is an element to work in all three that make it harmonious together. I can do that.“ She finds that knowing her customer is crucial to achieve a successful outcome.

“It requires a lot of communication,” said Leahy. “I need to be sensitive to the customer’s comfort levels to change.

Sometimes I go shopping with them to determine their style and taste. An 80-yearold’s taste will often be quite different from a 40-year-old. After all it is your home, and you want it to reflect you.”

For Leahy, love and respect for the old is essential to be able to transform it.

And she is all about “old”!

So much so, that Leahy seeks out old architecture when she travels. Even her wedding ring is an antique, and she collects old record albums and classic cars.

“When I see old homes, I get really excited. This love of old things goes back to my childhood, to simpler times when you sat in your backyard and sipped iced tea,” said Leahy. “Life was simpler. Now it is zoom-zoom-zoom with no time to savor and appreciate. “ Leahy’s reverence for all things old becomes a deeply personal affair when refurbishing a home.

DOWNTOWN METAPHYSICAL STORE is quietly building a community of spiritual seekers, artists, and the sublime

By MICHAEL HOWARD A new metaphysical store named The Prism and Pendulum recently opened in the center of downtown Escondido, on Grand Avenue & Maple Street. And akin with its mystical nature, the store originally wasn’t meant to be.

“I thought I was opening a rock shop,” says Loretta Scott, proprietor of the store, with a laugh.

Scott opened the business in July of 2024, with very little fanfare, but a big dose of serendipity. “My husband decided to throw the doors open one night, on a Friday during Cruisin’ Grand,” she said.

Hailing from the educational field, Scott says the entire journey leading up to the shop opening has been a mystical experience. “So I recently retired in December from teaching high school for 31 years.

This is my retirement plan,” she said. “The grand idea for the shop came actually from a tarot reading that I had done in December in Denver.”

Scott was visiting her mother who was in a hospital for an extended period of time.

Once the nurses observed Scott was spending too much time inside the hospital, they suggested she get out a bit. They asked her what she liked to do. “I said, well, I’m a rock hound. And they said, oh, there’s some fun rock shops on the street here.”

During lunch each day, Scott would explore the stores. “One of them had a tarot reader attached, so I thought, well, I’ve never had a tarot reading done, so I said, what the heck, you know?”

Some say tarot card readings can be a mixed bag. There’s those cliche messages you think of when imagining fortune tellers, and then there’s some oddly specific details that can give you goose bumps. Scott got a little of both.

“She said you’re going to have one chapter of your life close and another one open this year sometime. And the new chapter is going to be in the spiritual space somehow.”

Scott’s reaction was classic. “I looked at her like she had three heads.”

Upon returning home that December, she began to prepare for the school year and planned to put in her notice, but not retire yet. Then, serendipity played a part yet again.

“They put out something through the district that I was eligible age-wise to retire,

and they were doing a little incentive. And I was like, well, that’s interesting,” Scott recalls.

She took the deal, and with time on her hands, Scott began supporting her daughter’s artistic efforts making jewelry and tarot wrap fabric bags at pop-up craft fairs.

Perhaps it was the tarot wrap fabric bags that did it, but the realization came. “Oh my God, this is what the tarot reader was talking about!”

“So we came up with Prism and Pendulum being that, you know, prism for rocks and pendulum for crystals, and the metaphysical – stuff like that,” Scott explains.

And there’s a little play on the Edgar Allan Poe short story “The Pit and the Pendulum,” she admits.

What Scott didn’t expect was the journey the shop has taken her on. “So I kind of feel like I had almost, like, a spiritual awakening last January because I learned a lot,” she

says. “I went out into Rocky Mountain National Park with a guide and we kept seeing a particular deer for a long time, and that tarot card reader had said that’s one of my spirit animals. I didn’t know anything about this. So I’m learning a lot. I have learned so much in the last six months.”

The shop isn’t just a retail store, though, it’s an art gallery too. The storefront is divided into three spaces, each with its own distinct purpose.

“The front face is purely retail - it has its own website, Instagram and everything like that, said Scott. “The gallery has taken a life of its own. So while it’s tied to the shop and you have to walk through the shop, it now has its own website, Instagram, social media and everything. It’s really its own space.”

With the store up front, and the gallery in the middle, the back portion of the store is geared towards the metaphysical com-

munity, focusing on providing services that a surprising number of people seek, Scott declares.

“This community has been forming and at some point I realized it, and thought, this is really cool and it’s very similar to what I did as a teacher,” she recalls. “It’s become this place, like my classroom was, you know, where people just come and gather and you’re accepted for who you are. And you know your talents are recognized and appreciated.”

The store has what Loretta Scott calls a family wall with pictures of the various service providers and an explanation of the services they provide. “There’s, I don’t know, fifteen people on our community or family wall now,” she claims. “And every single person besides Lindsi, the original tarot reader, wandered in.”

That’s Lindsi Hawkins, a tarot card reader and spiritual advisor who lists ritual workings, spiritual education, and magickal goods as the services she provides. Her introduction to the Prism and Pendulum runs more along the lines of the mundane, but the end result has turned out to be a bit of providence.

“I get a message on my website from Loretta saying, you know, hey, I’m opening this spiritual store and we need a tarot card reader,” Hawkins recalls.

Hawkins says she knew it was more than just a store from the start. “I’ve gone into other spiritual stores and people aren’t incredibly welcoming,” she says. “And with Loretta, I never got that. I met her and I was just so blown away at her character and her approach to this whole store and what she was trying to accomplish that I knew immediately we just connected.”

She adds, “So she’s been a huge person in my life this last year. She’s really been there for me through a lot of stuff and it was just really powerful that we connected.”

Hawkins says Loretta’s approach has attracted the same type of service providers.

“It’s just generally good people that mean well with their practice and aren’t doing it for the money,” she says. “They’re doing it because they really want to help people. And I think that’s really attracted an awesome group of individuals to our store of people that are really excited to learn more. Or, you know, they have an open mind about spirituality and it’s more about gathering people together that have a similar perspective on this whole spiritual world and giving them

a place that they feel comfortable to talk about, like experiences that they’ve had or things that they’re curious about without judgment.”

Hawkins is available for tarot and Lenormand—an alternative fortune-telling system— card readings on Tuesdays and most Fridays. She also holds a full moon circle ceremony at the store. But don’t let the ceremonies and card readings scare you away.

“The Prism and Pendulum is a space for everyone, regardless of spiritual belief,” Hawkins emphasizes.

Jaime Allen, a medium, psychic, and paranormal investigator says the same thing. “You walk in and you feel home,” she says about the shop.

Allen provides medium, psychic and intuitive readings on Friday mornings and most Saturdays at the store. She also runs a paranormal investigation company called the Paranormal Road-Trip, which investigates active spirits in spaces. “We’ve done private investigations at the Whaley House with our own group, which is great that they allowed that. We were invited up to Catalina for three nights to investigate a building from a client of mine and make sure that it was ready to be sold. We go wherever.”

Allen says the vibe of the store is what has helped build the community that is forming.

But, mostly it’s the owner Lorretta Scott.

“We started talking and I realized that she wanted to know about me, about my gifts, about how this or that works,” she recalls.

“No one ever asked me that question somewhere like this, and I’ve been trying to work in shops for years and I just kind of threw my hands up and said ‘When it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.’ ” Scott reports she’s been welcomed by the community at large too. “We have not had a single bad experience,” she says. “Everybody’s been really welcoming. Everybody on the street has been fantastic, the city has been great. The art community has been really welcoming to us. Escondido is be-

coming a huge arts destination intentionally, and that’s been fun to be along the ride for that.”

But most importantly, with the art gallery, metaphysical store, and the growing community around her, she just wants people to know there’s a safe space where you can come and you’re not judged for who you are or what you believe.

“And we can all learn from each other,” Scott says. “It’s so fun to be able to learn from each other.”

An Eye on hidden treasure

And the Photographer’s Eye Gallery is a gem.

There you can treat yourself to a smorgasbord of photographic works of art that not only please the eye but feed the soul.

Created by photographer Donna Cosentino, this is a love affair, and a personal dream come true.

With years of experience in the craft and a lot of serendipity she was able to make her dream a reality by making this salon a happening place displaying pieces by world class photographers.

Her goal now is to expose gallery visitors to various forms of art in photography.

With cell phones, photography is accessible to everyone. According to Cosentino, it allows young people to easily get into photography. Even casual snapshots are now an art form called snapshot aesthetics.

Cosentino appreciates all forms of photography.

As a former Palomar College photo instructor, teaching her craft is a passion.

“I love that education component of teaching the community about what photography is and how wonderful it is,” said Cosentino. “As a nonprofit organization, the mission of the gallery is to educate and enlighten. I do not stick to a particular kind of photography but rather show various genres. The gallery is to boost local photographers and have the community discover photographers from afar.”

change lives either by viewing or engaging in the art form. It can be about healing or be cathartic or it can just simply be about beauty.

The past present and future exhibits speak to this very fact.

March is Women’s History Month The gallery is presenting two women photographic artists who are displaying works depicting grief, recovery and resilience, each through their own interpretation, experience and culture.

They are Diana Nicholette Jeon with her

“when stars fell from the sky” and Sandra Klein with her “Grieving in Japan” exhibitions.

The images are hauntingly beautiful with soulful messages that inspire and move the viewer.

April is also Arts and Culture month in Escondido, a Public Art Commission and MAGEC (Museums and Arts Growing Escondido Community) initiative.

Cosentino will be participating by dedicating April 13-19 to photography.

There will be demonstrations, workshops, family events and even an outdoor skateboarding photography slide show with Grant Brittain.

While visiting the gallery you can relax and enjoy the exhibit or sit and go through some of the many books in their library or take a tour of the darkroom or even participate in a workshop “I really like to turn people on to photography in all its forms,” said Cosentino. “ ‘The Photographer’s Eye’ is unique in San Diego. It is edifying because people tend to discover that photography can tell a story and be something deep or beautiful.”

BRUSHING AWAY LONELINESS: how one arts organization is keeping seniors connected

By TOKELI BAKER Loneliness among senior citizens has become an epidemic in the U.S., with many older adults feeling isolated due to the loss of loved ones, limited mobility, and shrinking social circles.

Despite living in an era of constant digital connection, seniors often struggle to find meaningful interactions and enriching activities. But in Escondido, one non-profit arts organization has been coloring outside the lines to combat isolation in creative The Watercolor Group meets on Mondays.

The Escondido Art Association (EAA) may not be a spring chicken—it’s been around since 1959—but the arts organization has remained a vibrant hub for artists of all ages. For over six decades, EAA has been a cultural staple, offering senior-friendly art classes and exhibitions at its gallery on Historic Grand Avenue. The secret to its longevity? A deep commitment to fostering community and creativity, especially among those 55 and better.

EAA’s monthly free gallery receptions remain a staple offering of Escondido’s Second Saturday activities. Members and non-members alike bring potluck dishes to this community event and enjoy taking a look at recent artworks by community members in categories ranging from oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media and digital art and photography. Award winning artists “take the stage” to tell a little bit about how and why they made their art and what inspired them. The EAA Gallery is a gathering space for artists and art lovers of all ages.

In recent years, Escondido Art Association has also expanded its reach, welcoming a younger generation of artists while still prioritizing programs for its senior members. Through its Community Partnership with the California Center for the Arts, Escondido (CCAE), the association offers two weekly classes at the CCAE Education Wing: the Watercolor Monday AM Class with Kene Lohmann and the Open Studio

for Artists on Wednesday mornings with Craig Reesor. EAA also regularly recruits artists from local senior centers, offering scholarship opportunities to make art accessible to all.

But the creativity doesn’t stop there.

EAA’s influence now extends to the walls of the North Island Credit Union through its Rotation Program, bringing art to unexpected places. The credit union hosts its new Community Room and Gallery, a very large space adjacent to the new bank, which is conveniently located in the Target mall off of Auto Park Way. The NICU also hosts a weekly Writing Class and a quarterly Mixed Media Workshop—proving that self-expression comes in many forms. Best of all, these programs are open to both members and non-members, ensuring that anyone with a creative spark can join in.

MONDAY MORNINGS ARE NEVER A DRAG Watercolor Mondays with Kene Lohmann Watercolor Mondays with Kene is for the beginner with little or no experience up to the more advanced water colorist. There is something magical about a teacher who inspires students to come back week after week, Monday morning after Monday morning. Kene’s charm, his wit, his compassion and passion for the arts are the secret sauce to his teaching style. Kene Lohmann has been teaching watercolor for the past 15 years in various galleries and studios in North County, and has been teaching through Escondido Art Association for the past year and a half. His student roster is engaged and committed.

Lohmann’s class is more than a watercolor class. It’s a supportive, encouraging environment with learning opportunities from the instructor as well as fellow students. It’s a group of artists who enjoy their water medium and each other. Lohmann’s charming personality and sense of humor make the class a fan favorite. The watercolor weekly course helps students of all ages develop their own style—while gaining valuable technical artistic skills and knowledge about the medium. Students explore basics like technique, composition, value and some problem solving.

Lohmann, who grew up in North San Diego County, studied under noted watercolorist Thelma Speed Houston. His colorful landscapes were influenced by his time living in beautiful Hawaii. His love of nature and world around us is notable in his works. “I strive for that emotional reaction connecting the viewer to my work,” says Lohmann, who also teaches children and

emotions from and/or invent a scene for their audience. Creative writers use words to help their readers picture the story they are telling. Both practice art forms that draw on others’ imaginations.

In this class, the focus is on using life’s experiences as the foundation for creative writing. Students draw from their past to create memoirs or fictionalized versions in many genres. The class also uses visual art as inspiration for creative writing. All levels of experience are welcome. The class meets at the North Island Credit Union, 1230 Auto Park Way in Escondido on Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m. The only cost is a $5 donation each week for the Escondido Arts Association.

A COMMUNITY OF ARTISTS Wednesday Morning Open Studio Group Open Studio sessions are held every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at California Center for the Arts, Escondido in Studio 2. Open Studio focuses on the practical aspects and techniques of creating art. Participating artists can work in any medium: pastel, oil, watercolor, acrylic, collage, charcoal and so much more.

Artists bring their own easels and supplies to the class and work together on personal art projects, supporting and holding each other accountable for making art on a regular basis. The group prides itself on calling the group “A Community of Artists” and that is exactly what co-facilitators Craig Reesor and Tim Cline have fostered. Both facilitators bring a lifetime of experience in fostering artistic growth. Their shared passion lies in helping fellow artists refine their vision and achieve their creative aspirations.

From an early age, artist Craig Reesor was captivated by the world of fine art, finding inspiration in the galleries of Laguna Beach. During high school, he was hired by the North Clackamas School District to collaborate with his mentor, Dee Boyles, a respected graphic artist and oil painter in Portland. Together, they created print materials and murals to enhance educational initiatives. Reesor continues to explore various artistic mediums and takes joy in sharing his expertise with others.

Describing Tim Cline is no simple task— his talents span a remarkable range. He worked full-time at Fallbrook’s renowned foundry, Artworks of Fallbrook, under the leadership of Wendell Perry. He also contributed to designing nuclear waste casks at General Atomics in Torrey Pines. “Tim’s skill set seems to be all in his head,” remarks Escondido artist and friend Darrel McPherson.

come six to ten artists at a time, allowing each to work at their own pace across a variety of media. Which includes drawing, watercolor, acrylic, oil painting, mixed media, and digital art enhanced by AI. Some artists also experiment with 3D constructions and other innovative forms of creative expression.

Held at Escondido’s California Center for the Arts, Education Wing: Studio 2, the studio space is a versatile, high-ceilinged room bathed in natural light, which the artists deeply appreciate. A wall of mirrors adds to its charm, prompting Cline to remark that it evokes the essence of an Edgar Degas dance studio painting.

For more information, visit the Education Page of EAA’s website at www.escondidoartassociation.org THE FULL EXPERIENCE OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION Kat Furrow’s Mixed Media Quarterly Workshops Quarterly workshops presented in cooperation with the North Island Credit Union are available to adult beginner artists with teacher Kat Furrow, who is also the VP of Programs at the Escondido Art Association.

Students learn new artistic techniques and experience the healing and transformative power of art. Kat highlights the importance of making art accessible to all through her fun, engaging step-by-step workshops.

Students will learn to combine abstraction with the beauty and essence of flowers, the rawness of humanity, and the spirituality inspired by nature. This focuses the artworks on conveying emotions, ideas, or impressions through bold shapes, vibrant colors, and dynamic composition.

Mixed-media artist Kat Furrow, a selftaught artist living in Carlsbad, has found a home in Escondido through the Escondido Art Association (EAA) Gallery. Furrow, a retired Navy Chief Torpedoman, Surface Warfare, is a lifelong learner and a senior at Arizona State University. She is now EAA’s gallery Vice President of Programs.

Perhaps most importantly, Furrow is a mentor, mom, grandmother, and community volunteer whose guidance has left a lasting impact on those she has worked with. She is also a dedicated veteran and volunteer with North County Veterans Standdown.

She supports area school theater programs, Shivela Middle School, through her mixed media set designs and is a champion of the EAA children’s and veterans’ art outreach programs.

very air I breathe. I enjoy making the painting process approachable, exciting, and inclusive through color, texture, and layer-up approach. It boosts confidence and ignites the creative spirit for myself and those I work with,” says Kat Furrow.

Having been an art teacher for 10 years, Furrow’s workshops are designed with the beginner in mind, as she is unwavering in her commitment to using art for healing and hope. She has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of art on veterans, women, youth, and their families. Her goal is to extend this impact to a broader audience, and she does so through her mixed-media workshops. All supplies are provided at Furrow’s workshops, including refreshments.

First annual Southern California Indigenous Culture & Art Festival Debuts April 19 This family-friendly celebration at Grape Day Park will feature inspiring Native speakers, modern Indigenous fashion show, youth art contest, local food & beverage, and Indigenous arts and entertainment.

Southern California’s rich Indigenous heritage will take center stage at the first annual Southern California Indigenous Culture & Art Festival, a vibrant public celebration held April 19, at Grape Day Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This exciting family-friendly festival presented by the City of Escondido and San Pasqual Band invites the community to experience the traditions, creativity, and stories of Native American cultures.

This will be a terrific opportunity for local and regional residents to experience arts, culture and entertainment provided by our tribal neighbors.
