EDITOR’S NOTE

It was wonderful to be back in a road race paddock at May’s Scarborough Spring Cup. I hadn’t been to a Scarborough race since the Gold Cup meeting in 2017 so there was lots to chat about with friends, old and new. With heats, qualifying sessions, warm ups and racing there was hardly a moment when there weren’t bikes on track, giving the large crowd enjoying the relaxation of the virus restrictions plenty of action to watch. The event enjoyed all of the ingredients any road race fan could hope for with a grid full of quality teams and riders from the Irish paddock adding to an impressive local turnout. Paul Jordan, Mike Browne, Thomas Maxwell, Darryl Tweed, Adam McLean and Neil Kernohan joined exiled Fermanagh man, Lee Johnston, Dean Harrison, Davey Todd, Jim Hind, Rob Hodson, Mike Norbury and Jamie Coward plus a host of others to provide a weekend of brilliant racing. Sadly, it is unlikely the same feast will be repeated in 2021 at either Scarborough or Armoy and Cookstown because of date clashes. The Oliver’s Mount Festival scheduled for 31 July- 1 August shares the same weekend as Armoy on 30-31 July. The Cookstown 100’s 10-11 September date falls on the same weekend as the Gold Cup meeting at Scarborough. Those clashes mean fans, teams and riders will have a limited choice of which events to attend. The problem is compounded by BSB meetings also taking place on those road racing weekends. This will almost certainly prevent some of the star names such as Harrison and Johnston from competing on the roads. Although there isn’t much that can be done about the BSB situation, road race organisers might be able to avoid such issues with better communication. Sometimes clashes are unavoidable but all too often our sport operates in a tightly confined bubble that doesn’t look outwards. There was no liaison before the 2021 dates were decided. Given there will only be two Irish road races this summer, the date clashes have created an unfortunate situation, diminishing both the talent on the grids and the spectacle for the paying fans who have been deprived of race action for almost two years. IMC 2021 TRAINING DAY The Irish Mini Bike Championship competitors enjoyed their first outing of 2021 at Nutt’s Corner on May 9. “Although not in a position to run a race event, we know the importance of getting our members out on track, especially our youth and our newcomers.” IMC chairman, Mark Boyd, said. “We took the opportunity to put together a structured training event that would instil confidence in our competitors so that when we receive the green light to return to competition, they will feel ready to roll onto the grid.” Attendees received guidance and advice from the scrutineering team, a detailed safety briefing, and an informative track walk. Riders were accompanied by skilled and experienced instructors on track who provided constructive feedback on racing lines and a reassuring presence for some of the youngest attendees and their parents. They enjoyed some agility, control and balance activities and many practice starts in a race setting.
