EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to another edition of Road Racing Ireland, the world’s only magazine dedicated to between the hedges racing. Ireland has always been at the forefront of the sport and this month we remember the Temple 100, once Ireland’s oldest and perhaps most spectacular road race. Much has changed in the sport over the past two decades since the County Down event’s demise following a fatal crash in 1999. Other long standing Northern Irish events like the Carrowdore 100 and Mid Antrim 150 have also disappeared from the calendar during those years, despite the introduction of many new safety improvements such as Recticel bales and increased track time for competitors. The images from the Temple 100 races highlight the incredible spectacle road racing provides. Our proximity to the breathtaking action lights up the senses in a way no other form of motorsport comes even close to achieving. All too often though, we don’t appreciate what we have until it is gone. Nowhere has the excitement of between the hedges competition been greater than at the Ulster Grand Prix. All of the sport’s greatest riders have competed on the fast and flowing sweeps of Dundrod which Peter Hickman re-established as the world’s fastest race course in 2019. As with every other international road race, Coronavirus ensured the cancellation of the Ulster in 2020. The continuing restrictions plus the event’s ongoing financial problems mean a return to action this summer is highly unlikely. So now we look towards 2022 and the centenary of Ireland’s most famous road race. Rumours of a revival abound as negotiations continue behind the scenes to save the event. Let’s hope racing can return to Dundrod to ensure the Ulster Grand Prix’s 100th birthday doesn’t suffer the same, sad fate as that of the Temple 100 in becoming a celebration of a great race that no longer exists.
