JIM BRENNAN Chair of the RNS Board of Directors

Preparing students for
a rapidly
changing future
The lessons learned, friendships forged, and memories created here have shaped many lives. Now, we invite you to join us in ensuring that future generations experience all that an RNS education offers.
As Chair of the RNS Board of Directors and Chair of the RNS Foundation, we see firsthand the incredible impact our alumni, parents, and families can have on the school’s success. With your support, we can continue to innovate, grow, and provide the exceptional programs and unique experiences that define RNS.
We believe in the power of this community to make a difference.”
Every much-needed gift strengthens our everyday priorities, grows our endowment, expands scholarships and bursaries, and enhances our campus. Your donations empower the school to prepare students for a rapidly changing world while upholding the traditions and values that make RNS so special.
We believe in the power of this community to make a difference. Thank you for helping us build a culture of philanthropy at RNS.
With gratitude,

WHYI Give McKenzieDEBBIE

The ‘McKenzie 5,’ pictured above in Edinburgh, Scotland (l to r), Ella
Clive
and Sophie ’19 all attended RNS. Their mother, Debbie, is an RNS Governor.
When Jon and I moved our five children from Alberta to New Brunswick, we were looking for a school to help ease that transition. It was apparent from our first visit to RNS that our children would be warmly welcomed into the tight-knit RNS community and encouraged to learn in an academically challenging environment with exceptional support.
We appreciated the caring culture RNS provides each student through dedicated, empathetic teachers, small Advisor groups and diverse co-curriculars. Like my own children, each student is different and the RNS experience nurtured individual growth in a very supportive way. Our kids graduated with a strong sense of values, compassion, a drive for personal achievement, and the ability to work hard. And the traditional events at RNS helped me form lifelong friendships as a parent alongside my children.
I’m a Governor because I have a passion for the school. I believe RNS is important to the community of the Kennebecasis Valley, the City of Saint John, and the province of New Brunswick. I hope I can help RNS remain a leader of independent schools with a unique focus on its students and the community at large. Any amount of time, talent, or financial gifts from parents, grandparents, and alumni can allow RNS to give more to its students and sustain its special place in the Maritimes and internationally.”
’19,
’13, Joe ’17, Jack ’15,
Community is a core RNS value
Afew years ago, when we introduced a refreshed brand for RNS, we took the opportunity to add “community” to our school’s values of character, courage, and creativity. We did that because the evidence was undeniable: for students, parents, alumni, and employees, the power and strength of the RNS community are at the heart of our school. The Hill is a special place for so many – it’s where the business of learning how to live and who you want to be is taught, and there’s nothing more powerful than that.
In that spirit, I want to share a vision that is as important as the curriculum we teach—building a stronger, more connected community and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our school through the endowment. Within this report, you will read about people who believe in the transformative experience of an RNS education and who are committed to staying connected for the betterment of our school.
But going from good to great means a bigger endowment. A robust endowment not only secures our financial future but also enables us to do more for our students by enhancing programs, improving our campus, and providing scholarships and bursaries. We have to fundraise $1.2M every year to meet our annual budget. A healthy endowment would relieve this burden and allow us to dream bigger for the benefit of our students.
Your support plays a vital role in these efforts and shapes the future of our school. Please consider how you can play your part. We are all connected through this special community – preserving and protecting it is up to us. So is securing RNS into the years ahead.
Thank you for being a community builder, and enjoy the read.

TAKING SHARED RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR SCHOOL
This year, we are pleased to introduce four new giving levels - The 1877 Society, The Head’s Circle, The Top of the Hill Club, and The Blue & Green Society - to recognize the generosity and commitment of our donors. These new tiers allow us to honour their contributions and offer exclusive opportunities to engage with the school community. Whether it’s through special events, public acknowledgement, or personalized communications, our goal is to ensure that every donor feels valued and connected to the impact their gift is making in the lives of our students and employees.

thank you
for showing your community spirit
When we first arrive on the Hill, we instantly become a part of a caring, inclusive community. And, when we leave, we take RNS with us because we develop a love of this place, its people, and all it represents. This report honours the alumni, parents, grandparents, employees, and friends who love RNS and make generous gifts to ensure its students have the opportunity to succeed on the Hill and long after they have left. Because of this community of loyal donors, RNS is one of the best independent schools in the country! Thank you for being a part of our community.

Did we miss your name? We may not know of your planned gift. Call one of us below today so we can say thank you.
Generous, thoughtful people in our community have made the decision to make a difference in the lives of students at RNS by including a legacy gift when planning their estate.
Planned gifts can be made in a variety of ways, including bequests, gifts of life insurance, and charitable remainder trusts. They are designed to suit an individual’s area of interest while providing significant tax benefits to the donor. Your charitable endeavours through a planned gift can provide permanent benefits to RNS students for years to come through scholarships, financial aid, and new and improved facilities.
When donors let us know of their estate plans, all information regarding their donation is kept in strict confidence. Some donors wish to share with others their legacy intentions, while others wish to stay anonymous. No matter the case, we thank each for their leadership and philanthropy.
If you are thinking of making plans in your estate, contact us in the RNS Development Office to chat more about creating your legacy at RNS.

I Give STEFANIE WHY
“
Mortimer’00
Attending RNS has had a large impact on shaping who I am and choose to be in society and to my children. It provided several fundamental influences: the importance of a community that supports and shapes you to be the best version of yourself so you can serve society in positive ways; a commitment to education, knowledge, and always striving to learn and understand more; and the balance of academics with arts, culture and sports.
I choose to give back to RNS because it gave me so much and set me up for a fulfilling career and life. I strongly believe in paying it forward. RNS is continually investing in the generations of tomorrow - future leaders, educators, and changemakers.
We need to embrace change and support it and supporting RNS is one way to do that.”
Stefanie Mortimer ’00 and husband Jeremy Niskala, children, Jack, Odin, and Isla, and family pups, Cocoa and Prince, live in Morgan Hill, CA. Stefanie serves as the Vice President of Research and Early Technology Development at Guardant Health, a diagnostics company specializing in non-invasive blood-based approaches for the early detection of cancer, headquartered in Palo Alto, CA.

Committed to the RNS Community One family’s compelling reasons for staying connected

Bob and Jeff Owens ’98 know that in order to make something better, it takes action and commitment. Thirty years ago, Bob and his business partner, Dave MacFadyen, decided that good was not good enough for clients of their boutique financial services firm, Owens MacFadyen Group. They disrupted their industry by providing products and services with a new approach. That mindset—the transformation from good to great—motivates Bob and Jeff to do the same for RNS.
Since 2019, the Owens family has funded the RNS OMG Changemakers Speaker Series, which brings together Senior School students and business leaders three times a year to listen to a keynote speaker, ask thoughtful questions, and gain valuable networking skills. A new program is currently under development,
also sponsored by OMG, tailored to students interested in the investment sector. Both of these programs teach business acumen, financial literacy, communication and negotiation skills, and open new avenues for our students to explore.
Though they do not seek recognition, we would be remiss in not offering the Owens family as an example of dedicated community builders. Staying connected to RNS is important to their family. Bob was an RNS Director from 1993 to 2006 and Board Chair from 1997 to 2001. Jeff is a graduate of the Class of 1998; his brother, Jonathan Owens, graduated in 2002, and his sister, Natalie Owens, is part of the Class of 2005. An RNS Governor since 2023, Jeff explains why his family shares the RNS school value of community:
Bob and Jeff Owens ’98 of the Owens MacFadyen Group sponsor the RNS OMG Changemakers Speaker Series to offer a unique experience to students.
Whether it’s your time, a financial donation, sharing knowledge or talent, this community is worthy of your gifts and becomes stronger because of it.”
“RNS gave me a foundation and friend group that has stood the test of time. It’s also where I met my wife, Holly McMackin ’97, and our son, Heath ’32, will attend RNS this fall, followed by Nathan ’34 and Tessa ’36. The campus has changed over the years, but the RNS culture and values remain unchanged. Retaining that culture isn’t an easy task, and that’s the biggest factor for me when it comes to how we can enhance the RNS community – helping to preserve it. Many educational institutions are one-sizefits-all, but RNS is the complete inverse of that. Just like a parent has to adjust to the different needs of each child, RNS has a similar principle embedded in its culture, which makes the school so special.
I believe in giving back some of what we’ve gained over the years, and supporting the school is important to honour the relationships I built when I was there. Whether it’s your time, a financial donation, sharing knowledge or talent, this community is worthy of your gifts and becomes stronger because of it. My advice is to get involved and pay it forward.”

The Owens family recognizes the value of an RNS education. Bob and Carol sent their three children to RNS, and now Jeff and Holly (McMackin) Owens ’97 will provide their three children, Heath, Nathan, and Tessa, with the same opportunity.
If you would like to attend the RNS OMG Changemakers Speaker Series as a guest or have an idea about how you can support one of our unique and exceptional programs, please reach out to Nic Carhart in the Development Office.
RNS Sustainability REPORT CARD
2
Last year, we introduced our first Sustainability Report Card. As a commitment to our community, these report cards identify and share information related to the three globally recognized sustainability pillars: Environment, Social Impact, and Good Governance (ESG). As a future-forward school nurturing a regenerative mindset in tomorrow’s young leaders and global citizens, we want to share with you our efforts and progress on pursuing the greater good on our campus and beyond the Hill.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions
Our energy audit by The WCM Group, supported by NB Power, indicates we output 961 tonnes of CO2 for 15 commercial buildings. We have a long-term plan to mitigate these emissions by upgrading our facilities to new efficiency standards as yearly operating budgets allow. In recent years, we have performed lighting retrofits to reduce energy consumption in the Irving Gymnasium, Dr. C.H. Bonnycastle Memorial Arena, Hibbard House, and squash courts. Next steps include a building control renewal process, which will improve operation and increase efficiency.
Learning for a Sustainable Future: Cross-Curriculum Teaching
We work in partnership with LSF, a Canadian charity that empowers students to change the world by integrating sustainability education into the RNS curriculum. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are visible throughout our classrooms and activated through student engagement. The SDGs of the LSF are embedded in our culture and are woven throughout the school cross-curricularly. In this way, we are promoting knowledge, values, and practices essential to a sustainable future.

Board Policy on Pluralism
As part of its covenant to modern Board governance and practices, the RNS Board of Directors must ensure that Pluralism exists within its membership and at the school. Part of that duty is to make certain that its members understand that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) are synonymous with excellence in education. The Board Policy on Pluralism promotes social justice by acknowledging that all cultures, races, and identities coexist harmoniously within the RNS community and by recognizing and amplifying historically marginalized voices and identities.

Environmentalism
The RNS Environmentalism Round Council: Wishlist
The RNS Environmentalism Round Council (ERC) is composed of 21 students across all grades. The ERC is one of six Councils we offer at RNS that aligns with the Round Square IDEALS. They meet every two weeks throughout the school year and are supported by RNS faculty members Brett Pineau and Matthew Dalglish. To be effective changemakers, the ERC has requested community donations for the following:
• Additional paper and plastic collection boxes for classrooms and residences - $2,000
• Exterior redeemable collection bins throughout campus: $10,000
• Hydroponic towers and liquid nutrients: $500
• Rain collection barrels: $500
