*Rothesay Netherwood School (RNS), by decision of the Board, donated (or transferred) all of its restricted and endowment funds to the RNS Foundation Inc. (RNSF) in December 2023, to manage on behalf of RNS. The total value of the funds at the date of transfer was $9,273,044. All donations relating to restricted and endowment funds are now recorded in RNSF’s financial statements. RNSF distributes 5% annually by way of donation to RNS, and these funds are used towards program support and scholarships and bursaries based on the mandate of the restricted and endowment funds.

Giving back is a longstanding tradition at RNS, reflected throughout our campus—from benches, pathways, and lampposts to buildings, trees, classroom resources, athletic fields, and co‑curricular programs. For the past decade, your philanthropy has fueled Campus Renaissance, delivering meaningful infrastructure upgrades that support today’s students. As we approach our 150th year, we are excited to turn our focus to Residence Renaissance, enhancing the boarding experience that so many alumni remember fondly.

Netherwood gave me confidence, resilience, manners, lifelong friendships, and a broader outlook on life.”

“Having served on the RNS Board of Governors, the Board of Directors, and as a US Trustee, I have witnessed firsthand the school’s evolution into a progressive, nurturing, and globally engaged community. “My family is Cameroonian, and I grew up in Marseille in southern France. I have always been passionate about sports; I competed in track and field at a national level and played professional soccer. I also serve as the RNS faculty lead for the Black Student Union and as a member of the Safety and Inclusivity Committee.

It is important to me to contribute to young people’s academic success by supporting the RNS Scholarship and Bursary Program, giving everyone the chance to benefit from a high-quality education. Teaching French to students from around the world in a magnificent workspace is enriching for both the students and me.”

RNS Scholarships & Bursaries Program The RNS Scholarships and Bursaries Program is funded by the RNS Foundation Endowment, which is currently valued at over $12M. A priority goal in the 2025-2030 RNS Strategic Plan is to increase the Endowment to $20M. In a typical year, RNS offers scholarships and bursaries to more than 30% of the students.

The level of financial support the school is able to offer is the result of the generosity of our school community donations from our alumni, parents, and employees giving back to a school that means so much to them.

Fantastic Faculty: The RNS Difference

ith an MA from McGill and BEd from UNB, I pivoted in 2025 from an award-winning reporting and broadcasting career with CBC News to teaching English at Rothesay Netherwood School. As a born-and-raised New Brunswicker with a deep background in local stories and community, I’ve seen proof that this province offers world-class opportunities in its people, culture, and educational institutions.

RNS is an ideal setting to support young people in developing the critical thinking and literacy skills they need to thrive in today’s competitive job market. Small class sizes, unparalleled academic and social support, opportunities to travel, varied co-curriculars, and a beautiful campus are just some aspects of the RNS experience that equip students for success wherever in the world they ultimately arrive.

In addition to teaching, I also co-edit a small creative writing magazine and continue to publish my creative nonfiction and short stories - formats my students are also learning to appreciate and enjoy. While a passion for English literature has led me to teaching at RNS, great teaching goes beyond just subject expertise and enthusiasm. The most effective educators also possess the unwavering belief that every student can engage with language, and find their own voice, opinions, and confidence. I hope to continue to inspire students to find that spark here on the Hill.

REPORT CARD

A Greener Campus with Sustainable Infrastructure

As part of our proactive commitment to the globally recognized sustainability pillars of Environment, Social Impact and Good Governance (ESG), we are working to ensure our campus remains a vibrant learning environment while minimizing our ecological footprint. Following an energy audit conducted by MCW Group of Engineering Companies, we have launched a series of strategic infrastructure upgrades designed to maximize energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions across our facilities.

Strategic Retrofitting and Energy Efficiency

We believe that sustainability is not just about new construction but also about the thoughtful stewardship of our historic buildings. Our recent initiatives include: • Smart Building Technology: We have modernized the Irving Gymnasium, Science Hall, and School House with advanced building automation and control systems, ensuring energy is used only when and where needed.

• Thermal Envelope Improvements: Through the first phase of window replacements at Hibbard House and significant insulation upgrades at Jackson House, we are drastically reducing heat loss.

• High-Efficiency Mechanical Systems: We have transitioned away from older technologies by installing modern boilers and hot water tanks in Kirk House and replacing oil furnaces with high-efficiency heat pumps at Jackson House and 27 Netherwood Lane.

• Lighting & Operations: From hallway LED retrofits in Mackay House and modern stage lights in the Théâtre Susan B. Ganong to energy-efficient kitchen equipment in Heritage Hall, we are optimizing every watt of power used on campus.

Fiscal Responsibility through Partnerships

A key pillar of our ESG strategy is securing external funding to offset the costs of these green transitions. By actively seeking partnerships with government and utility agencies, we have secured grants that cover approximately 25% of equipment and installation costs for several major projects.

Looking Ahead

Whether we are retrofitting a residence, renovating the theatre, or planning new construction, ESG remains the lens through which we view all campus development. Our recent standardization of recycling receptacles across campus is a daily reminder to our community that sustainability is a collective effort that starts with smart infrastructure and continues with mindful habits.
