Lifesaving in the English Channel Janet Legrand KC (Hon) is the new RNLI Chair

NEW CHAIR AT THE HELM A big welcome to Janet Legrand KC (Hon), the new RNLI Chair.

Janet has had an extensive legal career and is experienced in chairing large organisations.

Janet takes over the role of RNLI Chair from Stuart Popham CMG QC (Hon), who has stepped down after nearly 6 years. Chief Executive Mark Dowie says: ‘I would like to express immense gratitude to Stuart Popham for the dedication and commitment he has shown the RNLI. He has provided the charity with steady and assured leadership.’

Towards the end of last year, we released new footage and a crew testimony to give a first-hand insight into what our volunteer crews often face when rescuing people crossing the English Channel at the request of HM Coastguard. RNLI Head of Lifeboats Simon Ling also gave an update on crew training and equipment for these complex rescues. Simon says: 'We are incredibly proud of our crews. They have responded in a humbling way to this increase in demand with continued dedication, commitment and compassion. The welfare of our crews is extremely important to us. We recognise there is more to be done in support of our crews and this work, and everyone at the RNLI remains focused on our core purpose of saving lives at sea.’

Crews have been testing new equipment more specifically suited for responding to incidents in the Channel, and much of it is now in use – including inflatable horseshoe liferings and rafts and translation cards to aid communication with people from a variety of different countries. We’ve also increased operational staffing, where necessary, so that stations are able to give breaks to volunteers who are being tasked repeatedly in the space of a few days.

New Year Honours Congratulations to our six RNLI volunteers and supporters, recognised in the 2023 New Year Honours for their contributions to saving lives at sea: Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) Denis Brophy from Walmer RNLI is recognised for 55 years' service to lifesaving in roles including crew member, coxswain, deputy launching authority and (presently) lifeboat operations manager.

Dupre Strutt from Kirkwall RNLI is recognised for almost 40 years' service to lifesaving, both in Kirkwall as crew member, mechanic and (presently) coxswain, and also as area lifesaving manager for Scotland.

British Empire Medal (BEM) Andrea Corrie is recognised for her relentless dedication to water safety campaigning, following the tragic loss of her son James in a drowning accident in 2005.

Edwin Luckin from Cromer RNLI is recognised for 62 years' service to saving lives at sea in roles including helm, winch operator, mechanic, treasurer and (presently) boathouse manager.

William 'John' Collins from Kirkcudbright RNLI is recognised for 31 years' service to saving lives at sea as crew member, mechanic and (presently) lifeboat operations manager.

BAREFOOT MARATHON RUNNER Last July, seasoned Omagh open water swimmer Chris Gallagher was rescued by the Irish Coast Guard after getting caught in a rip current in Donegal. Since his rescue, Chris has signed up to be an RNLI water safety volunteer and completed fundraising challenges in the Kerry Hardman Ironman triathlon, a 5km swim of Glencar Lough and, in October, the Irish Life Dublin Marathon – barefoot!

Proceeds from this marathon fundraising effort will go to Bundoran and Lough Erne RNLI. RNLI Community Manager Nuala Muldoon says of Chris: ‘We are delighted that he is now promoting water safety and are in awe at how adventurous he has been in setting himself courageous challenges in his pursuit to raise funds. Thanks to Chris, the proceeds raised will now power our lifesaving volunteer crews to continue their good work in saving lives both at sea and on inland waters.’

The modern purpose-built lifeboat station

New inland lifeboat station In November, Enniskillen RNLI volunteers were handed the keys to a brand new, state-of-the-art lifeboat station. The RNLI’s new inland lifeboat station on Lower Lough Erne houses the lifeboat and launching tractor, full crew changing facilities, a workshop, office and training room. Fitted with solar panels for electricity, the building is also designed to draw heat from the ground, keeping the temperature at 16°C. Excess heat is used for showers, washing up and washing down the boats.

Enniskillen Lifeboat Operations Manager Gary Jones says: 'The new station is a testament to the RNLI’s commitment and dedication to the community here locally, and a credit to the efforts of our crew in continuing to bring people to safety on Lough Erne.

FIRST FESTIVE FUN RUN

Letter of thanks In November, Lough Ree RNLI volunteers received a note of thanks from a young supporter. Eliza (9) was part of a local school group that visited the station. In her letter, Eliza expressed an interest in helping the charity and included this colourful drawing.

So impressed were the crew that they invited Eliza to the station for a personal tour, where Lifeboat Operations Manager Kevin Ganly and Station Visits Officer Paul Kelly made a small presentation to her. Paul says: 'The visits are a new initiative for us and this is one of the first responses we have received. The future of the RNLI is assured with the enthusiasm Eliza and her friends have expressed.'

Jingle mingle all the way!

LOUGH DERG LAP THE LAKE

A crew of RNLI volunteers invited locals and visitors to jingle mingle with them at Dun Laoghaire Lifeboat Station and shop ahead of Christmas. Not one to miss out on a festive celebration, Santa traded his sleigh for the Anna Livia, Dun Laoghaire’s Trent class lifeboat to Santa shows up for welcome one and all to the station. the festivities!

With the boathouse decked in Christmas lights, hot chocolate on tap and live music from the Steadfast Brass Band – a spirited time was had by all.

The first of many, Dun Laoghaire’s jingle mingle raised a fantastic €2,500 to help save lives at sea.

Lough Derg RNLI’s charity cycle is back for a second year, with 120km and 65km routes to choose from. There’ll be food, water, and toilet facilities along the route, and a goodie bag and T-shirt for each participant. Tickets are €50 (65km) and €65 (120km), and registration will be held at the yacht club on Friday 5 May 5.30–7.30pm and Saturday 6 May 6.30–8am. In December, Newcastle RNLI launched a festive 10km, 5km and 1-mile fun run to help save lives at sea. Seasoned athletes and fun runners all got into the Christmas spirit around the beautiful Castlewellan Lake. Facing an early winter cold snap, 398 runners braved freezing temperatures to raise almost £7,000 for Newcastle RNLI. A virtual team of fun runners went from Hawai'i to Nova Scotia!

RNLI Community Manager Nuala Muldoon says: 'Thank you to Newcastle RNLI Fundraising Branch and crew members, Castlewellan Park staff, Castlewellan Parkrun Committee who helped us with the route, all the businesses that supported us by donating prizes, Elite Timing for a fantastic job as usual, and of course thank you to all the runners who joined in to help keep our volunteers safe.'

1 SLOW AND STEADY SWANAGE | 1 OCTOBER Our volunteers spent over 5 hours at sea when a large trawler suffered gearbox failure and started drifting without power – posing a danger to navigation. The lifesavers towed the vessel through bumpy seas, getting the fishermen into Poole Harbour just after midnight. Coxswain Dave Turnbull says: ‘It was a long night but we were pleased to get the vessel and crew to safety.’

Two walkers called the Coastguard and scrambled for higher ground when they realised they had been cut off by the tide between Robin Hood's Bay and Boggle Hole. It was Leah Hunter’s first shout as RNLI helm as she landed Whitby’s D class lifeboat on the beach. Her crew helped the pair down a slippery bank and safely onboard.

Three Jersey lifeboats launched into heavy swell and force 7 winds when a small aircraft ditched in the sea.

St Helier’s inshore volunteers swiftly found the flight crew safe and well in a liferaft. The two men were transferred to the all-weather lifeboat and taken into St Helier where they were met by paramedics.

Two lifeboats launched after a fishing vessel, with two people onboard, broke its mooring during gale-force winds in Plockton Harbour. The fishing boat was drifting towards rocks.

Kyle of Lochalsh lifeboat Spirit of Fred. Olsen arrived at the scene just 15 minutes after being paged, to tow the boat and crew back to the harbour.

Our Atlantic 85 lifeboat crew towed a 9m yacht clear of the beach one breezy Saturday morning after it ran aground near the station. Once in deeper water, the yacht’s skipper was able to safely power her into Faversham. RNLI Helm Dave Parry says: ‘The yacht was anchored offshore overnight but got pinned on the beach when the wind increased.’

RESCUE Cleethorpes Main Beach shelves very gently – sounds nice, right? Easy.

Calm. Safe.

But when the tide comes in, it’s dramatic. ‘It comes in faster than you can walk; you’d have to run to keep up with it,’ according to local lifeboat Crew Member Matt McNally. There are large sandbanks, which look like innocent parts of the beach at low tide, but when the North Sea rushes in they quickly become islands, getting smaller and smaller until they disappear.

Tidal cut-off is common. But that doesn’t make it any less scary for those who get caught out. And when the lifeboat crew heard that three children were stranded one July afternoon, the adrenaline started pumping.

‘We knew we only had about half an hour before that bank would be completely gone,’ says Crew Member Phil Playford. ‘We had to get the boat in the water quickly. It does hit home when it’s children in danger. You can’t help but think: “That could be my child."

Our main worry was that they might try to swim or wade to safety before we got to them.’

That’s almost twice as fast as a rip current. An Olympic swimmer wouldn’t stand a chance, and nor would a frightened 13-year-old.

‘ We had to get the boat in the water quickly.

It does hit home when it's children in danger' took the lifeboat as close as he dared to the ever-vanishing sandbank where the children had been spotted. Then Phil and Matt jumped overboard, to wade ashore to help.

‘The sand underfoot was quite uneven,’ says Phil. ‘At one point, the water’s at your knees. Then you take a step forward and it’s at your waist.’ Back onboard the lifeboat, Steve and Jamie kept a close watch. ‘As soon as the crew leave the lifeboat, they become your casualties too,’ says Steve.

A chill day Pals Lucia and Ellie-Mae (13) had had a lovely time on the beach. ‘We went out for a chill day,’ says Lucia. ‘We were sunbathing and splashing in the water. We did walk out quite far, but we followed the water out, and we thought we’d be able to follow it back in too. Then as we were walking back the water came in around us.’

the sandbank. And that no one was angry with them. ‘The lifeboat people were lovely,’ says Lucia. ‘They were caring. They didn’t blame us.

They understood.’

For Phil and Matt, this rescue wasn’t about technical skills in seamanship or navigation, but something just as important. ‘It was all about people skills,’ says Phil. ‘Staying calm and relaxed so the girls wouldn’t panic. Explaining to them that it wasn’t safe to go back the way they’d come, and to come with us and we’d make sure they’d get back safely.

‘Also, the original call we got said there were three people stranded, so we had to make sure there was no one else with them. The girls were very calm and easy to deal with, and we assured them they’d done nothing wrong.’

By this time, Steve and Jamie had found a safer spot, with fewer seabed lumps and bumps, to get the girls and their rescuers back onboard. Once the volunteers were sure that the initial report was a mistake, and that there weren’t any more people stranded, they headed for the station, popping 12 Lifeboat spring 2023

lifejackets on the young friends and reassuring them.

But there was an opportunity to educate as well. ‘When we were nearly home, Steve stopped the boat to show the girls the sandbank they’d been picked up off, and there was only about 2 foot still visible. You could see the realisation on their faces that it was more serious than they’d thought.’

‘We were dead shocked,’ says Lucia. ‘When we saw that the water had come in over where we were and we were like: “Oh my God, no way!”’

Indeed, by the time they were back in the lifeboat station, the sandbank had completely disappeared.

Relief all round Then it was time for what every teenager dreads: calling the parents. ‘I think the parents were a little worried,’ says Phil, ‘but when Lucia’s dad turned up we explained that it was just one of those things and the girls hadn’t done anything wrong. The parents were grateful and relieved more than anything.’

It was a relief for Lucia too: ‘My dad was very nice about it. Like, he didn’t think anything like this would ever happen. None of us did.’

RESCUE building for them, which will be able to accommodate a B class lifeboat as well as the D class. It will also have more room for training and changing, and a new RNLI shop. Most importantly, for shouts like this, the new station is on the beach and will have its own slipway, so the crew won’t have to cross a busy road and packed promenade in an emergency. Launching will be quicker and safer.

New era, same fast tides Jamie, who has since taken a full-time job with the RNLI as area lifesaving manager covering Cleethorpes, Bridlington, Withernsea, Mablethorpe and Humber, says: ‘This new station will represent a huge change to the lifesaving service we provide, and also to the way our volunteers can train.

In fact, we’ll be looking to recruit more crew, because of the new, additional lifeboat, and because we’ll actually have space for more people!’

As the weather warms up, the people of Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and further afield will grab their buckets and spades and head for the sands at Cleethorpes. We know that some of them will get cut off by the tide. And we know that, thanks to your kindness, the RNLI’s volunteers will be ready to help.

They probably won’t find Lucia and Ellie-Mae stranded again though.

‘We’d never walk out that far again,’ says Lucia. ‘And we’ve learned about the tide times and to always check them. If I saw the crew again I’d just say thank you. They helped us so much and they were so lovely.’ ■

STAY SAFE: TIDAL CUT-OFF • Understand how tides work. Tide times and heights vary throughout the month – a clear beach at 5pm yesterday may be submerged at 5pm today.

• Check tide tables. Don’t judge the speed of the tide by eye. Instead use tide tables or tide apps to check times before you set out.

• Seek local knowledge. Read signs advising of tide times and hazards.

Speak with RNLI lifeguards, the National Coastwatch Institution and local people.

• Observe your surroundings. A waterline on rocks, debris line on the beach or demarcation between wet and dry sand can all indicate where high tide comes up to.

• Know where your exits are. If walking on a beach that becomes cut off at high tide, make sure there’s an alternative exit such as a path or track.

Don’t take unnecessary risks if there isn’t.

• If you do get cut off, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard. If it’s safe to, wait where you are. If not, seek higher ground.

TIP: Every 2 weeks, there’s a spring tide (highest tide). In between each, there’s a neap tide (smallest tidal range). Learn where they fall in a month.

KNOW THE RISKS: The UK and Ireland have some of the biggest tidal ranges in the world; changes in depth between high and low water can be as much as 15m.

SWEPT INTO DARKNESS

Ballyglass lifeboat volunteers dig in for a gruelling overnight vigil, bringing hope to a man trapped in a cave off the wild Atlantic coast Downpatrick Head in County Mayo commands some breathtaking views.

Opposite its iconic Dún Briste sea stack there’s a ledge leading to three tidal caves. ‘They look pretty inviting,’ says Coxswain Francie Gibbons of Ballyglass RNLI. ‘But that’s the problem. People look in but don’t look over their shoulder. It’s easy to get washed in by a wave.’

That’s what happened one evening in September 2022 when a couple were

swept off their feet in a strong surge.

Luckily, the woman escaped and was rescued by nearby paddleboarders, but the man was forced into the back of a cave and had to take refuge on a ledge 50m inside, high above the surf.

‘I was settling down to a nice Saturday evening with my daughters when the pager went off,’ says Francie.

‘It took me and the crew about 40 minutes to reach the scene and I had to carefully navigate our all-weather

lifeboat through a narrow channel and the shallows to get us close enough for a proper look. It was very rocky, with a huge swell and a serious wash in the cave mouth. It must have been horrendous for the man inside.’

A local Coast Guard unit was already on scene with their rigid inflatable boat and had made several attempts to get a line into the casualty. Entering the cave by boat was too risky and they were eventually stood down as darkness fell.

The gathered rescue agencies, including local gardaí, firefighters and Civil Defence, agreed that the best course of action was to send in the Irish Cave Rescue team when sea levels dropped.

In the meantime, the man would have to sit tight.

‘That’s when we stepped in,’ says Francie. ‘We knew he was alive, but we couldn’t reach him and we couldn’t even talk with him over the noise of the surf or get a clear picture of whether he was injured or not. There was a risk he could succumb to hypothermia or even decide to swim for it if he thought he’d been abandoned. We had to stick with him.’

Every half hour they moved into position, shone searchlights into the cave and asked him over the loudhailer for a sign he was OK. ‘We couldn’t hear him, but we knew he could hear us,’ says Francie. ‘That kept us going and probably helped to keep his spirits up.

We reassured him there was a plan and that we weren’t going anywhere.’

It was a challenging watch, with little room for manoeuvre. ‘We had a

relief crew on standby but we decided to stay put,’ says Francie. ‘Everyone did an outstanding job, whether that was sounding out the water depth, working the radio or checking in with the casualty. I don’t think anyone got much shuteye.’

At first light, the cave team began their descent of the cliff face, with the RNLI crew guiding them towards the cave mouth. Carefully drilling lines into the crumbling rock every metre or so, they continued their delicate task until around 3pm, when they finally managed to extract the man with a rope pulley. With sea levels now dropped, the man was guided safely back along the ledge and into a waiting Coast Guard helicopter which whisked him off to hospital. Despite his ordeal, he was in remarkably good spirits.

Francie says: ‘I am so proud of my crew mates for their actions over those 24 hours. We’d normally only spend such a long time away from home searching for someone out at sea, but this was different. We knew if we left the man, or didn’t keep in constant contact, he might lose hope. The work of all the agencies and the local community was incredible. It’s a callout we will remember for a long time.’ ■

RESCUE ‘It was a cold winter’s day,’ says RNLI Hovercraft Crew Member Emily Jones.

‘I’d just come off my nightshift as a firefighter when we got the call.’

Two dog walkers are stuck fast in the Leasowe Bay mud on Wirral Beach.

They’re waist-deep in water and at the mercy of an incoming tide.

‘When you hear that people are in mud and there’s a rising tide, you’re thinking: “they’re going to drown if we don’t get them out quick,”’ says Emily, who, like most of her crew mates, is a volunteer. Prior to 2002, the only way to reach casualties marooned in places like this was either by helicopter or by walking with the aid of crawling boards – a slow and laborious process.

Luckily for the dog walkers, nearby Hoylake is one of four RNLI stations that is home to a rescue hovercraft – the Hurley Spirit is swiftly launched, and the crew of four each has an important role. ‘Hovercraft handling is pretty challenging,’ Emily explains.

Piloting one is a bit like pushing a wonky-wheeled shopping trolley.

‘Especially when it’s windy. We often have to move around the craft to change the weight distribution, flag hazards to the pilot, and help them navigate a safe approach to casualties.’

Once on scene, the Hoylake crew find the dog walkers now chest-deep in water. Their eight dogs keep vigil nearby on firmer ground. Using specialist equipment such as mud mats, a mud lance and lifting gear, the crew eventually manage to free the two women and get them onboard. Four of the dogs, eager to reach their owners, have swum out to the hovercraft, and they hitch a ride too. While the remaining dogs are rounded up by the police, the casualties are flown to shore on the Hurley Spirit, where they are handed to the Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team.

second counted.’ Packs of daredevil dogs aside, rescues like this aren’t unusual for the RNLI’s hovercraft crews.

Each year, mudflats and sandbanks catch people out, and unless help arrives quickly, the consequences can be serious.

The launch of a real lifesaver Fast and manoeuvrable, hovercraft can reach 30 knots. They perform a vital role, enabling crews to take the direct route to casualties in areas where the land is too soft for vehicles and the water is too shallow for boats. They’re stationed at Hoylake, Hunstanton, Morecambe and Southend-on-Sea. In the 20 years since the first craft was introduced in 2002, RNLI hovercraft crews have saved 70 lives.

Those saved owe their lives to some clever design and some serious skills.

Two fans underneath the craft provide lift, while two more fans at the rear – working in the same way as aeroplane propellers – provide the thrust.

Steering is controlled via aerofoil-shaped rudders, which helps to explain why the hovercraft is flown by a pilot instead of being steered by a coxswain.

Ready for anything When their pagers go off, volunteers never know what sort of rescue they’ll be called to, so they have to be prepared for anything. Visitors to the coast can do their bit to stay safe, advises Hoylake Hovercraft Commander Chris Williams: ‘Always check the weather forecast and tide times and tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.’

‘We know all the danger hotspots,’ says Emily. ‘But, unfortunately, visitors from outside the area aren’t always aware of the risks. And my heart still goes every time I hear those beeps.’ ■

Exploring the courage, innovation and brute strength behind two essential elements of any RNLI rescue: lifeboat launch and recovery An RNLI volunteer knocks out a large brass pin and the lifesavers hold on tightly as they hurtle down the sheer slipway into the raging sea onboard their trusty lifeboat. Many of us will conjure this iconic image when we think about a lifeboat launch. But it’s not the full story of how RNLI volunteers have been getting their lifesaving machines, large and small, in and out of the water for almost 200 years.

Throughout the 1800s and early 20th century, the most popular method of launching without moorings was to physically pull lifeboats into the water. In those days, just as there were no engines to propel the boats, there were no tractors to tow them. Similarly, the traditional lifeboathouse with its iron piling slipway would not make an appearance until the late Victorian era. Instead, the crews relied on many strong hands and horses to haul their heavy craft across a beach on bulky wheeled carriages or over greased timber skids. Typically, the launch site would be some way from the boathouse and the weather would be horrible.

One stormy night in 1899, it took 20 men and 18 horses 11 hours to haul the 10-tonne Lynmouth lifeboat Louisa 13 miles overland to a safer place to launch at Porlock Weir.

Their combined efforts resulted in the successful rescue of all 18 people from the stricken ship Forrest Hall. Although this remains an exceptional feat, applying the true grit of every human and beast to hand was a common occurrence.

At Newbiggin in Northumberland, the saying was: ‘Every man to the boat, every woman to the rope’, referring to how the local women would drag the lifeboat across the beach before the lifeboatmen took up the oars.

Ladies that launched

Sometimes you would get a call when the doodlebugs were about. And there were minefields on either side of the slipway. There was only a little space left where the launchers could safely stand.

Teams of women known as the Lady Launchers put the lifeboats to sea at some lifeboat stations, like Dungeness and Newbiggin. At Dungeness, the women would drag heavy wooden skids across the shingle beach and lay them under the keel of the lifeboat before taking to the ropes. In the early days, wearing no more protective kit than their own coats and scarves, the women would then piggy-back the men into the boat. The Tart and Oiller families formed the backbone of this group – with Doris Tart, her mother-in-law Ellen and aunt Madge serving as launchers for around 50 years. Can you imagine the storms, blizzards and drenchings they endured?

And the huddles around a fire until they were called on again to run the whole procedure in reverse?

Staying on track The horse-drawn carriage launch was a familiar but magnificent sight for the best part of a century, with machine gradually replacing beast in the 1930s. It was with good reason – in The Life-Boat Journal of May 1920 Chief Inspector of Lifeboats Howard Rowley explained: ‘It is becoming increasingly hard to get the use of horses and the men to manage them, and they have frequently to be brought long

HERITAGE distances, with consequent delay, and the cost of hiring is rapidly becoming prohibitive. If we can find a mechanical means for launching, and get rid of this uncertain element, we shall greatly increase the efficiency, certainty and speed of the service.’

Breaking new ground With farm horses being replaced by tractors, the RNLI looked to agricultural machines to usher in a new age of launch and recovery. These vehicles could tackle terrain that horses could not, be operated by just one person and reduce the risk to volunteers. The first caterpillar tractor trial took place at Hunstanton in Norfolk to see if it could be adapted for beach launching. The 3-tonne Clayton and Shuttleworth tractor, with a 35hp petrol engine and 14-inch caterpillar tracks, was put through its paces over flat sand, dunes and uneven, rocky ground. It easily towed the Hunstanton lifeboat and carriage, a combined weight of 7½ tonnes.

Afterwards, Captain Rowley said: ‘Every conceivable form of trial was made, and a launch was successfully carried out on the steep part of the beach, over a distance of about 200 yards in 7 minutes, with the full crew and only four helpers. Under ordinary conditions such a launch would require 8 or 10 horses and as many helpers.’

Customisation The tractor was modified and it went on service at Hunstanton in 1921 as the first RNLI launch and recovery tractor. By 1927, the RNLI was experimenting with a larger four-wheel drive tractor to see if it was powerful enough to cope with the deep shingle and thick sticky mud

at other locations. Designed together with the Four Wheel Drive Lorry Company, the tractor and its special carriage were fitted with a roadless traction creeper track, enabling it to handle all kinds of beach conditions. It was powered by a watertight petrol engine, with four forward and two reverse gears. It also carried a winding drum with steel wire rope, which helped to haul the lifeboat off its carriage once it was in deeper water.

As waterproofing techniques improved, our launching vehicles moved into deeper waters. By the 1970s, the RNLI was driving the development of the Talus MB-764 tractor.

Looking somewhat like a lunar landing buggy, this marinised County tractor could wade up to 1.5m. The RNLI has continued to innovate, working closely with specialist tractor companies to develop new launch and recovery systems ever since. Today we have around 15 types in our fleet to meet the varying needs of all our stations and craft, as we move to standardise our kit to make it easier and more cost-effective to maintain.

Shannon launch and recovery The RNLI’s latest launching technology carries the DNA of these earlier vehicles. Known as SLARS (Shannon launch and recovery system), it was designed for our newest and most agile class of all-weather lifeboat. Both tractor and boat are revolutionising the way we save lives and making best use of every penny or cent you donate.

You can drive it directly onto the beach. SLARS can carry the 18-tonne lifeboat over all kinds of terrain – from steep, shelving shingle to wet, sticky sand. It can drive into big

surf and safely launch the lifeboat in up to 2.4m of water.

The lifeboat is launched at the touch of a button and the whole system requires minimal manual handling by shore crew, making for safer and more efficient operations.

When it’s time for recovery, the lifeboat beaches bow first onto the tractor’s turntable cradle which can rotate the craft 180 degrees, ready to be quickly launched again.

So far you’ve read about locations that don’t have harbours or slipways. What about those that do? Every lifeboat station needs a safe and rapid method of launch and recovery that suits its particular craft and geography.

Always afloat For an RNLI station based in an easily accessible harbour, with no tidal events drying it out, the lifeboat can be moored afloat. Ideally, they are tethered alongside a pontoon for easy access by foot or bicycle or, if moored further out, reached by boarding boat.

To launch an all-weather lifeboat at a location with no natural harbour or where there is a large tidal range or silting, a slipway is needed. Today, the RNLI has just 17 slipway stations. They each have a section inside, where the lifeboat is held on rollers. That section is connected to a sloped keelway of coated steel outside. The craft is released from the top of the slip and descends under its own weight.

Typically, the gradient will be 1 in 5 so the crews can reach speeds of around 30mph as they hit the water. Following a rescue, the lifeboat is recovered to the top of the slipway by winch.

Heavy lifting Launching an all-weather lifeboat by crane is rare, but there is one example at Workington. The lifeboat used to be moored afloat in the Derwent Estuary, where it was exposed to debris and heavy siltation. A unique solution was found: a bespoke davit system that launches today’s Shannon class lifeboat and her crew over the dock wall. The crane can operate in severe weather, meaning the crew can launch into heavy swells and winds of more than 100mph.

HERITAGE need their own launch and recovery systems. The D class is usually launched by a tractor and trolley system but the larger B class lifeboats will either launch from a drive-on drive-off carriage, shore-mounted crane, floating pontoon or floating boathouse. Meanwhile, inshore rescue hovercraft are moved from site to site by specialist transporter vehicles.

They can launch from any flat area, such as a car park or beach, provided there is enough room.

Hidden heroes Of course, the most vital ingredient in any successful launch or recovery today is the shore crew. These dedicated and highly trained volunteers are needed to help with every carriage, slipway and davit launch – covering everything from driving complex launch vehicles, to marshalling onlookers to safety. At slipway stations at least four are needed – including a head launcher, winch operator and two other volunteers. And every lifeboat station, whatever the class of craft, needs a team to refuel, clean down and make ready for launch again.

Throughout their tasks, the shore volunteers rely on personal protective kit to keep them safe and dry; radio headsets for clear communication over the noise of waves, weather and engines; and a nice warm cup of tea and shelter in the lifeboat station crew room.

PADDLEBOARDING Stand-up paddleboarding is one of the fastest-growing watersports. But does it live up to the hype?

And how do you get involved?

In its simplest form, standup paddleboarding (SUP) involves standing up on a board and using a paddle to propel yourself through the water. But it’s much more than that. It’s a fun activity that combines low-impact exercise with adventure in the great outdoors.

Gemma Palmer-Dighton, British Canoeing #ShePaddles Ambassador, says: ‘The wellbeing benefits for mind and body are immeasurable. You can do it kneeling or sitting down too. Sometimes I just sit, with my legs dangling in the water, enjoying a moment of calm.’

‘You can paddle all year round,’ says Gemma ‘But you should choose the seasons and conditions that match your capabilities. Some of my best paddles have been on my local river, early in the morning. Being out in nature first thing and watching the wildlife is phenomenal.’

GEMMA’S TOP TIPS • Do it safely! Make sure you have the right kit and check the weather and tide times. Make a plan and stick to it. Don’t stray out of your comfort zone.

• Let someone know when you’re going on the water and when you’re back.

• Wear appropriate clothing for the conditions. Whether that’s a wetsuit or T-shirt and running leggings, choose bright colours so you’re easy to spot.

• Be aware of your surroundings and who is sharing your space.

They say ‘paddle before power’, but assume that people on powercraft haven't seen you. Carry a whistle, and use it to let others know you’re there.

• Paddle in threes if you can. It means that if someone is in trouble, one person can stay with them and another can go for help.

• Practise getting on and off your board in a calm stretch of water – and make sure you hold your paddle correctly. Lots of people use them the wrong way around.

• Don't be afraid to chat with locals and other water users.

Celebrating the partne rship of the Haven, wit RNLI and h RNLI mas cot Stormy Stan

In a record-breaking year, Haven has raised an incredible £245,000 as part of its partnership with the RNLI. It’s the largest sum fundraised by the Haven Team and holidaymakers since the partnership began in 2018.

To mark the 5-year anniversary, Haven and the RNLI named five caravans at five different parks. Caravans at Craig Tara, Seashore, Littlesea, Lydstep Beach and Burnham-on-Sea now proudly display these special names: Mary Sinclair, William George Fleming, The Agnes Harriet, John Godfrey Morris and Grace Darling.

Georgie Stanton, RNLI Senior Partnerships Manager, says: ‘Haven’s outstanding fundraising efforts have helped to train and equip our lifeboat crews, and their spreading of water safety messages to their guests has undoubtedly saved lives. These caravans are a fantastic way to recognise the vital work our volunteers do for their local communities, keeping people safe while they’re enjoying the coast.’

WHO’S IN COMMAND? May I ask you to enlighten me about the different roles of a lifeboat crew please? Specifically, what are the responsibilities of the helm, coxswain and operations manager?

ADVENTURES OF BOB THE BEAR My daughter was given a teddy bear called Bob the bear and every trip/holiday we have been on we are accompanied by Bob in his trusty lifeboat hat.

As well as visiting as many lifeboat stations we can, Bob likes to post pictures of his adventures, and then post pictures on his Instagram page @Bob_the_bear2019.

Not only do we only enjoy this, but it is a great way to meet the crews/stations and promote the RNLI. Andrew Stout and Bob

Editor: For those of you who, like Stephanie, would like to know about the different leading roles at a lifeboat station, here’s a summary: • The helm is at the wheel of any lifeboat. The helm is also in command of the crew of a B class/D class inshore lifeboat and the lifeboat itself (see page 33 for a visual guide).

• The coxswain is in charge of the crew of an all-weather lifeboat and the lifeboat itself (Shannon, Tamar, Severn, Trent, Mersey – see page 33). They’re in command, but they aren’t necessarily at the wheel of the lifeboat.

• A volunteer lifeboat operations manager carries out the day-to-day management of the lifeboat station to ensure the lifeboat’s ready for service.

FOND MEMORIES The Lifeboat magazine often does stir memories of yore. On the front of your magazine [issue 641] I spotted Durham Coxswain Richard Muir, who was my boss and who became godfather to my two sons. And there was Scarborough Coxswain Bill Sheader, who taught me much about carriage launching.

I had many adventures from 29 years in the service. I started as crew at 16. I became a

Reserve Mechanic (RM) in the 1950s, when there was still a pulling lifeboat at Whitby's Number 2 station! In those days, we RMs were ‘given’ a boat for which we were responsible. I proudly adopted the City of Bradford II, which I had for two and a half years, nursing her like I owned her. As did other RMs with their charges!

My interest in lifeboats has never waned and I eagerly still glean as much knowledge as possible, your magazine assisting me.

FUTURE CREW? Jack, who’s 8 years old, is a big fan of the RNLI. He used Lego to build this fabulous RNLI lifeboat station and slipway, plus a tractor towing a lifeboat.

Celebrating the RNLI family, past and present

Like father, like daughter In Hartlepool, 16-year-old Grace is following in her dad’s footsteps by volunteering at the lifeboat station as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award. Grace’s dad Rob is an inshore lifeboat helm and has been part of the crew for more than 20 years.

Grace says: ‘I’ve been going to the lifeboat station with my dad all my life, so I was delighted when the chance came to take part in the award here. Unfortunately I’m not allowed to go to sea but as part of my project I just muck in with the rest of the crew. I’ve been shown how to navigate and learned first aid – plus many more skills needed when at sea.’

And her proud dad adds: ‘I don't think it will be long until I see her head out to sea on shouts, which will obviously be an emotional moment – but I know she’ll be in safe hands.’

There were celebrations in Lerwick, after Stephen Manson officially completed his training and passed out as a qualified RNLI coxswain.

It’s been a challenging 6 months for Stephen, who spent his summer in the classroom, at sea and at the RNLI College in Poole, Dorset, completing study units, and learning all about command navigation, towing and emergency procedures – to name but a few skills!

Now that he’s a qualified coxswain, Stephen can take command of the station’s Severn class lifeboat, and is responsible for the crew, the boat and any casualties.

Stephen’s local mentor, Second Coxswain Tommy Goudie, says: ‘Stephen has worked hard to achieve this qualification. It’s been an intense period for him – and on occasions for the crew as well. We’re all pleased to see him pass out as an RNLI coxswain.’

Congratulations Stephen, from all of us at Lifeboat magazine – what a fabulous achievement!

Huge congratulations to Salcombe RNLI volunteers Jen Hicks and David Moxham, who tied the knot in January.

Between them, the pair have 12 years on the crew.

When they’re not volunteering, they run the local Fortescue Inn. And, if they’re not on a shout, they’ve been known to open their pub to crew after a night at sea for a much appreciated 5am bacon roll!

Our very best wishes to Jen and David, and their daughter Amé. Here’s to a long and happy marriage.

The Lifeboat Enthusiasts Society are mourning the loss of Jeff Morris, who passed away in November.

Jeff had been the society’s long-standing honorary archivist until his retirement a few years ago, and a regular contributor to their newsletter. He also Lifeboat enthusiast and wrote many lifeboat station friend of the RNLI, histories, which are still in Jeff Morris demand, and several other books about lifeboats and the RNLI, which so many people around the coast have gratefully relied upon for research over the years.

Jeff will be sadly missed by many of us at the RNLI. Our condolences to the Lifeboat Enthusiasts Society, his friends, and his family.

We are sending our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Lord Boyce, former RNLI Chair.

After an impressive 42-year career in the Royal Navy, Lord Boyce joined the RNLI’s Council in 2003 and was elected RNLI Chair in 2009. Under his watch, the RNLI weathered the stormy financial climate following the financial crisis in 2008, expanded their lifeguard service across the UK and Channel Islands, and developed the Shannon class lifeboat. Lord Boyce also oversaw a growth in prevention, education and sea safety programmes and the start of the RNLI’s international work, helping to save lives all around the world.

Yet his first brush with the RNLI came in the mid-1980s, when he was rescued from choppy waters off the east coast of England while sailing in a small catamaran.

Reflecting on his years as RNLI chair, Lord Boyce once said: ‘I will always feel proud to be part of our charity; and forever will be touched by the generosity of our people, whether they give their time, talents or financial support – all for one noble cause: to save lives at sea.’

Remembering Steve Medcalf Steve Medcalf, Withernsea RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, sadly died in December 2022, 3 weeks after being rescued from a fire in his home.

Steve was just 52 years old and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, fellow lifeboat volunteers, and all those who loved and knew him in the wider community.
