commencement regalia Significance of the Hood The hooding portion of the Commencement ceremony dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries and signifies special recognition of master’s and doctoral degree candidates. Faculty places the hood over the heads of the graduates, recognizing their success in completing the program and symbolically welcoming them as fellow scholars. The hood identifies the owner’s academic institution, degree, and field of study through the length and the colors of the lining and binding. Military Veterans Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions would like to recognize our graduates who are veterans. As members of the military, these students have demonstrated their commitment to the RMU core values of collaboration, authenticity, trustworthiness, inclusiveness, and service, especially that of selfless service. In addition to what these graduates will do in the future as health professionals, they have already given service to our nation, our state, and our community. Military veterans received a commemorative red, white and blue cord to be worn at this commencement ceremony, signifying Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions’ gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

featured biographies Dr. Brad Schoenfeld
Commencement Address 2021 Outstanding Alumni Award Recipient Dr. Schoenfeld is a professor of exercise science at Lehman College in The Bronx, New York, where he serves as the graduate director of the Human Performance and Fitness program. Dr. Schoenfeld has published more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers on various exercise and sports nutrition-related topics, and authored the seminal textbook, “Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy.” His research has been cited in over 10,000 peer-reviewed papers and he is currently ranked as the world’s top researcher on the topic of resistance training by ExpertScape, an independent site that grades researchers based on their scholarly activity. Brad was the recipient of the 2016 Dwight D. Eisenhower Fitness Award, presented by the United States Sports Academy for outstanding achievement in fitness and contributions to the growth and development of sport fitness through outstanding leadership activity, as well as earning the 2018 National Strength and Conditioning Association Young Investigator of the Year Award. In addition to his academic efforts, he has consulted with numerous professional sports teams and formerly served as Sports Nutritionist for the New Jersey Devils hockey organization.
Dr. Crystal Miskin
2021 Early Career Alumni Award Recipient Dr. Crystal Miskin, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT received her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University. After graduating from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in 2017 with her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, Dr. Miskin moved to Southern California and simultaneously entered private practice and began a residency. In 2018, Dr. Miskin completed an orthopedic

and manual therapy residency with Kaiser Permanente South Bay (Harbor City, CA). She went on to complete a sports and orthopedic physical therapy fellowship with Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center in 2019. She began RMUoHP’s PhD program with a concentration in sport and human performance in May 2020. Most of Dr. Miskin’s career has been focused on outpatient and private practice settings. While working in Southern California, she provided pro bono care at the Venice Family Clinic. Dr. Miskin is board certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) through the APTA and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (FAAOMPT). Now, she is working at RMUoHP’s Community Rehabilitation Clinic as the Clinic Director and as an Assistant Professor for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the university. When not at work, Dr. Miskin enjoys playing sports, exploring the outdoors, riding horses, and cooking with her husband.
Dr. Malissa Martin
Hartgraves Award for Excellence in Teaching Recipient Dr. Martin holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Education and Athletic Training from Indiana State University. She earned a Master of Science in Health Education and Doctor of Education, with an emphasis in Curriculum Instruction and Alcohol Drug Studies, from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Martin has served as the head women’s athletic trainer at the University of South Carolina where she developed and directed the first accredited athletic training education program in the Palmetto State. She held similar administrative roles at Middle Tennessee State University and Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her footprint in education for her exceptional contributions to her profession earned her the highest honor as a member of the most prestigious group of athletic trainers in this country, the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame. The NATA Hall of Fame is reserved for those few individuals who have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to the profession and are recognized as distinguished leaders in the field. Dr. Martin also holds the illustrious recognitions of NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer, Sayers Bud Miller Distinguished Athletic Training Educator, Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions’ Excellence in Teaching Award, the Greater Lakes Athletic Training Education Award, the Southeast Athletic Trainer’s Educator and Administrator Award, and is a recipient of the NATA Professional Development Award. Dr. Martin is a two-time recipient of the RMUoHP Presidential Award. 8 | DECEMBER 2021 COMMENCEMENT
Known in the athletic training profession as a renowned educator and for her work with professional development, Dr. Martin authored over 100 articles, books, home study programs, and grants. She has taken the platform for over 120 national and regional presentations and workshops. Dr. Martin serves on the editorial board for the Athletic Training Education Journal and the International Journal of Athletic Therapy and Training. Her research interests include various topics in education and female health issues. During her tenure at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, Dr. Martin has led the charge in developing and administering a “teaching effectiveness program,” an inaugural “faculty development program,” a program assessment process, a certificate in “learning and design in healthcare education,” and has guided and mentored over 80 current students and alumni in completing a terminal degree and becoming stewards of their discipline, scholars, and leaders in the profession and academic community. Dr. Martin enjoys cooking, hiking, kayaking, cycling, and fishing. She is an offcampus employee and resides in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Ms. Jan Reese
Adjunct Faculty Award Recipient Jan Reese is the Director of Instructional Technology for Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions (RMUoHP). As such, she consults with faculty to coordinate innovation in online learning and instructional design based on adult learning pedagogy and instructional design practices while promoting the effective use of technology in teaching and learning. She develops and delivers a multi-faceted training program to RMUoHP faculty, students, and administrators to promote the effective use of educational technology, including the use of the learning management system (LMS). Additionally, she teaches courses in utilizing technology in higher education. Ms. Reese received a BA in Professional Dance from BYU, and an MS in Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences from Utah State University. She is originally from Redondo Beach, California. Prior to her work with RMUoHP, she served as the Director of Dance at the Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, California. Her work included the creation of an original WASC accredited dance program, writing a UC “A-G” Arts Certified Curriculum, and teaching over 300 students annually.

Other affiliations have included serving as a technical director, manager, development consultant, and teacher for city, community, and professional organizations, including Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Anaheim, Arts Unlimited, South Bay Cities, Fred Astaire Studios, the Walt Disney Company, and BYU. Current affiliations include volunteering at Courage Reins, an equine-assisted therapy center, and the Food and Care Coalition.
Dr. Pamela Mullens
Adjunct Faculty Award Recipient Pamela Mullens, PT, PhD, C/NDT, has been a longstanding faculty member at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions (RMUoHP) for the last 21 years. While at RMUoHP, she has made numerous contributions to the educational environment: She taught in the Pediatric Science concentrations of the Doctor of Science (DSc) in Health Science program, transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy program, and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Science program. Dr. Mullens’ time spent at RMUoHP has been centered on academic coursework for doctoral students focused on analyzing the research evidence, clinical course, life challenges and successes, and pediatric therapy practice processes for individuals with cerebral palsy. She also addressed an interdisciplinary, lifespan perspective in analyzing and mitigating the effects of cerebral palsy from infancy through adolescence and into middle adulthood. Dr. Mullens’s efforts in her profession and at RMUoHP are recognized by many, including Jane Sweeney PT, MS, PhD, FAPTA, concentration track director for the RMUoHP PhD in Health Sciences – Pediatric Science program, and program director for the Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy – Pediatric Science program and the Neonatology Fellowship program. “Dr. Mullens has steadfastly remained available to teach, serve on dissertation committees, and advise former students long after graduation. Her meaningful, positive, respectful, and memorable clinical and scholarly discussions with students beyond the classroom are legendary,” said Sweeney. Alumna Lisa Katzman, PT, DPT, explained, “Dr. Mullens has been a force for change and growth in the field of physical therapy for over 72 years. During this time, I had the good fortune to experience her teaching excellence while attending the Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy in Pediatric Science Program at RMUoHP from 2018-2019. . . Dr. Mullens gently and permanently shifted my perspective and paradigms as a pediatric physical therapist working in early intervention.” Katzman

added, “She helped me realize that I needed to make changes in my approach to working with families and their very young children. I have a much deeper appreciation for the importance of educating families about the characteristics and long-term effects of cerebral palsy as early as possible.” To honor Dr. Mullens and her contributions to the healthcare profession, RMUoHP, and the Wasatch Education Foundation are jointly funding the Pamela Mullens Pediatric Science (PhD) Scholarship. The scholarship will award $3,000 toward tuition or other educational expenses to a deserving student in the pre-dissertation phase of the PhD in Health Science – Pediatric Science concentration for the Fall 2021 semester. Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions is proud to honor the time, efforts, and accomplishments of Dr. Mullens in advancing the education of students and healthcare as a whole through the 2021 Adjunct Faculty Award and the Pamela Mullens Pediatric Science (PhD) Scholarship.
