The Declaration requires that the local or regional authority establish an "Assembly of the Tree as a permanent consultative body". As well, the authority must also establish a "Defender of the Tree - an independent person or body responsible for ensuring respect for the principles of the Declaration."

I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree . . . . . . . Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree.

(From "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer) "Trees" is a famous poem that I learned in grade school. And it sort of annoys me that I can remember it from all those years ago but can’t always remember why I’m standing in front of the fridge holding the door open.

That poem is what came to mind when I recently read that there are over 3 trillion trees (that's "3" followed by 12 zeros) in the world. And only 250 billion stars (that's "250" followed by 9 zeros) in our galaxy. Trees outnumber stars by 12 to 1. That's even more trees than Elon Musk has dollars (USD). Trees outnumber Elon Musk's fortune by 3 to 1 - but only 2 to 1 if you're thinking Canuck bucks.

And for some people, like the poet above, every one of those trees is special.

In relatively modern history, the first literal “tree hugger” was a middle-aged lady in India about 300 years ago. The Maharaja (King) had ordered the forest next to her village to be cut down so he could use the wood to build a castle. The lady, Amrita, protested that the trees were a sacred part of her religion and to prevent the sacrilege of the trees being cut down she put her arms around a tree, hugged it, to prevent it from being felled. But the small army contracted by the Maharaja to cut down the trees, cut her down instead, beheading her, and began to harvest the trees anyway. This prompted other fellow-religionists from her area, in a show of solidarity, to also put their arms around the trees but they all ended up suffering the same fate as Amrita all were killed, all 362 of them. The Maharaja, when he heard of the killings, was immediately penitent, cancelled the logging contract and apologized to the remaining villagers, promising never again to log their forest. (So, overall, not a bad guy, not really.)

Considerable progress has been made in the intervening years in the methods used to protect trees and to deal with protestors - certainly protestors are no longer beheaded.

In 2008, a group of university students in California protested the cutting down of some oak trees on campus. Instead of hugging the trees, though, they climbed them, reckoning the trees wouldn't be felled if they were occupied. And they were right. The university, as part of the negotiations, provided food and water to the protestors so that they wouldn't get faint, fall out of the trees and hurt themselves. The protestors accepted the food and water and eventually came down. They did complain, however, that the provided no-name brand protein bars were less tasty than their preferred Clif Bars. And all the trees were cut down anyway.

More recently, in 2018, The Universal Declaration of the Rights of Trees was issued in France. It is based on 3 articles which are, in short form: "The Tree is a sensitive living being . . . ; Life on Earth depends on the existence of the Tree; and, Human beings . . . must interact with the Tree in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity."

(You'll please excuse the sexism - that should read "fraternity-sorority and solidarity".

In June of this year a small town in Quebec, Terrasse-Vaudreuil, just west of Montreal, became the first municipality in Canada to pass a resolution to support the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Trees. The resolution was a "citizen-led initiative" prompted by watching a movie, 'Trees and the Arts', which "sparked a broad public debate on the legal status of trees and the possibility of recognizing them as living beings, rather than mere objects."

And in July of this year, not to be out-done, the town of Saanich, one of Greater Victoria’s municipalities (there's 13 of them, don't you know) recently entertained a motion to recognize that Nature has rights, just like people, to “exist, maintain, persist and regenerate as needed.”

The municipal council member who proposed the motion said that the motion was in accord with “The Rights of Nature" movement and added that “Appreciating the intrinsic value of trees is critical in decolonization and reconciliation" - which are also, umm, very important issues.

The other councillors all professed their love for trees but ultimately voted against the motion and referred it to municipal staff for further study and consideration. (It is rumored that this was council's way of delaying the motion until later in the year so that they could see in which direction the autumn breezes were blowing the falling leaves.)

One of the core principles of the "Rights of Nature" movement is that natural entities, like trees, should have "legal standing in courts of law, allowing them to be recognized as injured parties in legal battles." But as one astute local columnist pointed out, Nature, and trees specifically, can't speak so all those trees will need somebody to speak for them. So that would mean . . . more lawyers?

The legal profession is not generally known as being committed to charitable works and the lawyers would, of course, require payment for their services. And while Nature may be beautiful, and has many other wonderful features, cash-liquidity is not one of them - Nature is, indeed, penniless.

Hmm - I wonder how that will work out.

Another memory from grade school, along with the poem above, is not about trees - but it is about the products of trees. Mr Johanson, the very same teacher who got us to memorize the "Trees" poem was in a fit of exasperation at the unruliness of our 7th grade class. I'm pretty sure, though not positive, that he wasn't meaning to be poetic but all the same, his proposed method for ensuring our good behaviour came out as a rhyming couplet: Even if I have to hide behind the door And hit you on the head with a two by four.

Aah, the good old days. And simpler times.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Encounters of the RM kind

I

’ve lived in Saskatchewan all my life. Born in Dinsmore hospital; growing up in small rural towns; living in Saskatoon working. I was finally able to purchase my dream in the rural countryside in the RM of Vanscoy. It consisted of 80 acres and a house. I’ve lived here 38 years.

My encounter with the governing members of the Rural Municipality of Vanscoy (RM) began with a letter termed as a ‘PUBLIC NOTICE – Intensive Livestock Operation (ILO)’.I think many of us would think something termed as a Public Notice is an announcement to inform the PUBLIC. Public being all people in general, and open to everyone referring to collective people of a nation, province or municipality, rather than a single person, or few individuals.

However, after investigation, I found government is allowed to use the words PUBLIC NOTICE even when it is sent to specific individuals, and not the ‘public’. It obviously doesn’t matter if the recipient interprets such a letter to have been sent to the collective people of an RM or a district within an RM. When I read this letter as Public Notice, I took it as to all residents in the municipality, not just to 3-5 individuals. In looking back, I feel using Public Notice in a letter and only sending to an insignificant number of people in the RM is a scam, such that it seemed the less people that know, the less problems may show up and the easier it is to go against ‘Public’ opinion. The Vanscoy RM even has a section under the Community tab titled News & Public Notice. That would be considered more as a ‘Public Notice’ given that it is accessible to everyone. But I never saw the proposed ILO rezoning in this section (the question why not comes to my mind).

The public notice letter was sent to three individuals as far as I know; maybe it could have been five. The people who live right by us (three residences within shouting distances) didn’t get notices. Not to mention the many people, (with children, pets, crops and livestock) living on the gravel roads that lead to the ILO site. Again, it seems Saskatchewan authorities do not feel that anyone else (the public) who do not live 1.6 KM away from a proposed site, does not need to know what RMs are doing, even though it will impact those people living on roads that lead to the ILO. The RM council is only required to do the bare minimum, and they did. Ignoring their other constituents as they did not matter.

The Public Notice letter I received gave me the bare minimum of information, such as stating the RM received a discretionary use application for an intensive livestock operation; for a specific piece of land and that a public hearing was to be held; with a date and time. Granted the letter did state I could write in if I couldn’t make the meeting. It encouraged the residents to comment, provide feedback, and concerns at the June public hearing meeting. It also mentioned to contact the RM for more details. I received this letter one week before the public hearing in June. I was inexperienced in this type of encounter, and even though it was a busy time for me (not to mention my farming and working neighbours), I went to the public hearing with little to no information thinking I would get it in the council meeting. I had not realized then that the ‘public notice’ sent out was only to a handful of residents, and that the meeting was not to provide the letter recipients with information; it was only for the recipients to eloquently, logically and knowledgably state concerns as to how the ILO would negatively or positively affect our family’s way of life. My inexperienced self was definitely unprepared.

In that June meeting, we (I use we to describe those who received ‘public notice’ letters) had no information at the beginning; in the meeting we discovered the ILO was a broiler chicken operation. When well water was mentioned as a concern, one of the people of the public (the applicant of the ILO) stated none of us need to be concerned about well water contamination on our properties as it would be handled. No one said how or why we didn’t need to be concerned.

However, due to our distress caused by lack of information received from the RM and not given time in the meeting to be informed, we left the meeting thinking the Reeve and Council gave us time to provide our informed concerns in the July meeting.

In order to find out what our small community of residents on the east side of Rice Lake and on the two roads that we constantly use in our daily lives, would be having to look forward to if the RM approved an Intensive Poultry Operation, I met with the couple that would operate it. I also investigated the 1.6 KM set out as the distance to which governs on who gets a ’Public Notice’; who oversees RMs; what is Saskatchewan Dept. of Environment and the Saskatchewan Dept. of Agriculture doing to ensure a national important marshland, Rice Lake, is not compromised and will not be harmed now or after years of an IPO operation sends it’s air pollution into it, as well as possible manure spreading drainage contamination in both the lake and our wells.

In June I had gone into this encounter with an open mind and a willingness to understand the pros and cons of a situation, such that I even met with the applicants of the operation to educate myself. I was willing to be an active participant in the RM. But in the end, I left both June and July’s RM meetings feeling I had been talking with a brick wall, which, of course, did not answer. The Reeve always seemed to speak to the table or papers he had in front of him and not to us the constituents (some hard of hearing). Not many councilors would speak with eye contact and one even mentioned he did not want to be there and turned away, sitting with his back to us the public. Needless to say, I wonder why these people ran for this office if they do not at least empathize with or acknowledge concerns of their already established fellow residents (of 38-50+ years).

Where is the transparency, and accountability?

Why ask for feedback, questions, or concerns from the few residents when their responses are considered less than the applicant’s request for an IPO operation.

Did the votes of the councilors for the IPO depend on the information on the applicant’s application letter, or their knowledge of related lucrative poultry operations in the RM, owned by the businessman who had purchased the land surrounding and to be used for the proposed IPO? Can someone answer how councilors base their decisions?

On who brings in the most income to the RM? I see no transparency or accountability in this case as to why an IPO is to the benefit of the constituents of RM of Vanscoy over the lives and livability of established residents, and a nationally important marshland.

Is it because Saskatchewan Agriculture is wanting to increase IPOs? Two councilors voted against the IPO. What did they see and consider that the other councilors didn’t, or were they the only ones that read the letters written by the ‘public’.

The reason I feel the council did not base their decision on reliable data is: - one fellow on the council did try to address concern regarding increased truck traffic and road maintenance. While I appreciated his willingness to respond to the matter, and to talk to me as a person of the community. He stated the applicant mentioned traffic would consist of 1- 2 trucks every 8 weeks. My issue with this is, if it takes one truck to deliver 50,000 chicks, it doesn’t seem likely that 50,000 grown live chickens would only have one to two trucks to pick broilers up who are 4 to 5 times the size of chicks. Correct me if I’m wrong? Or is it multiple trailers pulled by 1 - 2 semi(s)? Even so, is it realistic? Then, there would be trucks delivering straw, feed, cleaning and sterilizing chemicals. Simple math does not make the extra traffic only two more trucks. The true number of trucks would also need to be multiplied by the number times replenishment is required in a year.

- the other thing is, not the RM council nor the chicken operators could tell me where they planned to spread the manure, or if it is liquid or solid, and where and how they are storing it? Not one of them showed any concern regarding the distance of around .9 km to Rice Lake an important national marshland. The thing is, the Saskatchewan Government doesn’t care, so why should the people who are honored to have such a habitat in their community care. There are no bylaws, regulations or such that protect it even though there are many types birds under the concern status that live around or use Rice Lake as a migrating stopping point.

- there was no mention of who would pay costs of extra road maintenance, manure storage/spreading contamination, or any of the other questions proposed in my letter.

The reeve had stated something like, he and his council had to look at what was best for the municipality as a whole. I can only think the council felt the poultry operation best benefited the RM rather than the small taxpayer. Money talks and moving the ILO further away from Rice Lake and further south was not something the applicant or RM wanted to consider?

I really hope the rest of the residents of the Vanscoy RM appreciate the sacrifice we, the very few, are now having to live with (smell, lower real estate prices, additional traffic …) so that everyone else, the very many, can benefit from the added revenues from the new ILO in our neighbourhood.

After my investigation, I felt that I was now able to address my concerns regarding the proposed IPO to the Reeve and councilors. I wrote a letter itemizing my concerns, and questions I felt needed to be addressed. This letter was handed to the staff at the RM office the Friday before the July meeting.

I attended the July RM council meeting along with the other ‘public notice’ letter recipients as well as other residents of the district who did not get a ‘public notice’, but live on a road that would attract traffic to and from the IPO. Here is the kicker.

While the three recipients of the ‘public notice’ letter who left the June meeting along with a few people that sat at the table of the RMs councilors, thought we would be given time to be heard about or our concerns, the Reeve shut us down.

We were told we had our chance in June, end of story. None of our concerns were addressed in the meeting other than a water evaluation/study to be conducted. Upset residents spoke out anyway. But this had no effect and the vote was conducted. I never received any answers to my written concerns set out in my letter.

COUNCIL REPORTS VILLAGE OF VANSCOY

esidents are to be reminded of Bylaw 3-22 regarding the use of Fireworks in the Village.

The Bylaw states that “No person shall discharge fireworks in the Village of Vanscoy unless a permit is first obtained from the Village Office and is signed off by the Fire Chief.” There is a permit application available at the Office. Recently there were fireworks set with no prior permission. This is a contravention of the Bylaw.

Residents are also reminded of the Odd/Even restriction for watering of lawns and the use of outside water. This is an ongoing restriction and residents are expected to abide by the rule.

Bylaw 8-05 – Nuisance Abatement Bylaw states that: No owner or occupant shall cause or permit their land to be overgrown with grass or weeds; No person shall cause or permit any land or buildings to become untidy and unsightly. The Village, from time to time will perform inspections to determine if they Bylaw is being adhered to. In the event Council determines orders to remedy need to be issued, action will be taken. The municipality may, in accordance with Section 366 of the Municipalities Act, take whatever action or measure necessary to remedy a contravention. This may include the Municipality taking steps to remedy; and adding the expenses and costs to the tax roll of the owner of the parcel of land. This may include removal of any materials so as not to constitute a nuisance or harborage for rodents and insects or the mowing of yards that are overgrown with grass and weeds.

The tender for paving Lunn Street from Mather to Railway Avenue and 700 block of Cory Street was awarded. The annual water/sewer main repair tender was also awarded.

Fall clean up weekend is scheduled for September 25th-27th. Large bins for waste and metal recycling will be available. The landfill will be open on the 26th for clean waste. This is in addition to the scheduled clean waste days.

he RM is currently exploring the idea of building a satellite fire hall to help enhance and strengthen fire protection and emergency response services within the municipality. A potential location being considered is NW 20-35-07-W3. At this time, the final location has not been confirmed.

The purpose of this proposed satellite fire hall is to improve service levels for RM residents by providing an additional location for fire equipment and response operations. The same dedicated volunteer firefighters would continue to serve the area and would operate from the proposed satellite hall as needed.

TOWN OF ASQUITH

The RM may be collecting donations to help fund the construction of the proposed building. More information will be provided as planning progresses.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9th, 2026, at 5:15 p.m.

Carney’s Economy is Not Working for Canadians

That’s the 17th consecutive month that food inflation has outpaced overall inflation, leading to 76 per cent of Canadians saying that grocery costs are having the biggest impact on their household finances.

High prices have also led to 38 per cent of Canadians experiencing food insecurity, according to United Way.

A year and a half ago, Mark Carney promised that he would deliver the fastest-growing economy in the G7, and that this growth would create an economy that works for Canadians with accountability coming ‘by their experience at the grocery store.’ The results show that none of his rhetoric has changed the reality people are facing every day.

Since the first quarter of 2025, while the rest of the G7 experienced average growth of around 1.7 per cent and Australia grew by 2.5 per cent, Canada’s economy shrank by 0.1 per cent under the Carney Liberal government. Even if growth rises slightly, the Canadian economy is facing ‘growth rates along a permanently poorer trajectory’ compared to the one before Carney took office, according to Trevor Tombe, a professor at the University of Calgary’s Department of Economics.

Not only have Liberal policies created a permanently weaker economy, but they are also hitting Canadians directly at the grocery store. Canadians are paying for the highest food inflation in the G7 as prices rose 3.9 per cent – almost double the inflation target – in June, according to the OECD.

Higher prices aren’t just leaving families with less money, they are pushing more of them to food banks. The Daily Bread Food Bank reported that client visits rose again to 3.8 million between July 2025 to June 2026, almost triple what it was five years earlier. Daily Bread had to distribute 8.1 per cent more food, providing 300,000 meal servings or 40.7 million pounds of food across Toronto.

Delisle Rebels Football Report

T

he Delisle Rebels football team is working with Delisle Minor Football Inc. to put up permanent lights on the school field. They have been raising funds, applying for grants and sponsorships, and are very excited to be able to put up all 8 poles and lights this fall. By the end of September the lights will be installed and be fully operational with the use of generators for the October Rebels games. Next year they will trench in the power to a permanent power panel. They have secured funds for the poles, installation and 6 of the 8 sets of lights needed to complete the second phase of the project and are on the lookout for a few more sponsors.

Asquith Better Life Recreation Centre Report

ow can you believe it, August is almost over? Where in the world did our summer go? It is difficult to believe that a new school year and a year of activities will soon be upon us. Back to exercises that begin on Tuesday September 15th from 10:00am-11:00am at the Asquith Senior Centre (BLRA). A new season of Pickle Ball will also commence date to be determined. How fun and exciting!

As previously mentioned, our first barbecue was on Wednesday July 22nd and our second was Wednesday August 19th. Both were a huge success and as always, this community has a wonderful group of people. We thank you so very much.

I know that many of you are wondering when the Corn Roast barbecue is and guess what it is very soon, the corn is ready to sink our teeth into. My mouth is already watering just thinking about it.

Thursday September 3rd is the date from 5:00pm7:00pm at the Asquith Seniors Centre. Please come and join us.

Our first bingo of the new season is Friday September 25th at 7:00pm at the Asquith Senior Centre (BLRA). The progressive jackpot is $100 in 50 numbers or less. New and exciting news at bingo.

We sincerely hope that the harvest in the fields as well as the gardens goes without a hitch and the weather cooperates.

We will be setting up a table at the Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society 43rd Fair, Saturday Sept 12th at the Delisle Community Centre from 11 am to 4pm.. We will be selling tickets on the beautiful quilt made and donated to VSCC by the Vanscoy Country Quilters. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. We look forward to seeing you there to support both VSCC and the AgSociety.

On September 17th will be our Quarterly Potluck Supper starting at 5:30 pm. We will be honouring those members who celebrated a birthday in July, August, and September. Birthday cake, tea, coffee, and ice tea provided. After the meal there will be a short meeting to plan any fall events.

We ask anyone attending to bring an edible entree. The evening is free for members. Non-members are $5 per person and very welcome.

On September 25th Kaiser night will resume. Doors open at 6:30 pm with games starting at 7 pm. Cost to members $5.00 and to non-members $10. Please consider coming for 2 hours of fun card playing and great camaraderie. Lunch is provided and cash prizes are handed out. Post for Yourself, The Internet Isn't Listening Anyway

ou spend twenty minutes editing a video, syncing the audio, and rewriting the caption three times before finally uploading it to TikTok, Facebook, X, Instagram, etc. Whether it's a 45second clip of you around a campfire with family and friends, announcing a gym milestone, or weighing in on trending political discourse, the post-upload ritual is predictable. You close the app, wait two minutes, then reopen it. Zero engagement. Five minutes pass. Three likes: one from your aunt, two from automated bots. You refresh. Wait. Refresh again. A knot forms in your gut, a mix of rejection and creeping regret. You second-guess the video, your timing, and ultimately yourself. It's a lowgrade erosion of self-esteem, looping through millions of minds every minute.

Taking a detached look at Domo's annual Data Never Sleeps report dispels any expectation that your work will be noticed, let alone engaged with.

Every 60 seconds, over 500 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube, 70,000 photos are posted to Instagram, and hundreds of thousands of posts are shared on X. Essays, podcasts, memes, comments, video, and corporate marketing propaganda pour into the digital abyss every second. Believing that your personal hot takes, pictures of your consumerism, and thought-provoking memes will rise above this deluge isn't just optimistic; it's statistically absurd. It reveals a subtle main-character complex, the delusion that your mundane thoughts and "life happenings," most of which are staged, are significant enough to cut through the endless chatter.

Think of the narcissism it takes to take a selfie and then think, "other people might want to see this."

Human attention is a finite, rapidly depleting resource. The constant flood of content buries your posts within seconds, but it's your lingering hunger for validation that keeps you posting repeatedly in hopes of being acknowledged. It's our need for recognition that makes social media psychologically

sticky. A University of California news feature titled Can’t pay attention? You’re not alone; research led

by Dr. Gloria Mark shows that our attention spans on any single digital screen have plummeted to an average of just 47 seconds. Your posts aren't just competing with millions of creators uploading content constantly; they're also up against multi-billion-dollar algorithmic engines developed by behavioural scientists to capture every microsecond of human attention.

This brings to light an uncomfortable truth about human ego. Expecting strangers scrolling through social media to care about your Italian vacation, bistro dinner, or latest career milestone is sheer selfdeception. What makes people think total strangers will pause their routines to congratulate someone on a routine moment? It's an overinflated ego whispering a nonsensical lie, making a person believe their mundane opinions and personal moments will matter to anyone outside their immediate circle. Yet this delusion is becoming our dominant career ambition. Morning Consult data show that 57% of Gen Zers want to be influencers. Beneath this unrealistic career aspiration lies a collective tragedy: millions desperately want to be heard in a crowded room, where everyone is so preoccupied with telling their own "look at me" stories that they aren't listening.

When you're constantly refreshing your feeds, you're chasing dopamine hits. Social media platforms are deliberately engineered around variable rewards, the same psychological mechanism that keeps gamblers glued to slot machines. When a notification pops up, the brain gets a fleeting chemical surge; when it doesn't, a psychological crash follows. As social psychologist Dr. Jonathan Haidt documents in his book, The Anxious Generation, social media intentionally reorients users away from real-world relationships and toward an endless quest for digital validation. Relying on an uncontrollable algorithm for your self-esteem leads to ongoing anxiety.

When you tie your self-worth to likes, shares, and comments, you're handing your mental health over to corporate algorithms designed solely to keep you glued to screens. Relying on digital approval turns authentic self-expression into a stressful public performance, leaving you perpetually waiting for approval that never arrives.

The healthiest approach to online self-expression is to post strictly for yourself, with zero expectation of an audience. When you share a thought, a photo, or a video, do so because the act of creating brings personal clarity, joy, or satisfaction, and for no other reason. Whether three people see it or three thousand, your internal state shouldn't waver. Life is too short to spend it begging an algorithm for a fleeting moment of Internet visibility. Real human value never needs permission from an algorithm. The lack of an audience is the ultimate freedom.

If you post on social media hoping for engagement or, worse, seeking digital stardom, consider ending the habit of wasting time in the void. Redirect that time and energy on your immediate surroundings: your family, true friends, and local community.

These are the physical spaces where your presence carries real weight, where character limits don't truncate conversation, human bonds aren't measured in double-taps, and your potential to "influence" is exponentially greater. Post online if you must, but do so with absolute indifference to the outcome. Your mental well-being is far too valuable to trade for meaningless digital applause, given the odds that it was never coming anyway.

Doylefest 2026: Music, Culture, and Community at Eagle Creek Regional Park

oylefest began in September 2014 as a birthday party, music-festival style celebration on Eliza Doyle’s land located outside of Saskatoon, near Asquith, SK. As it has continually grown, she has since developed the birthday celebration into the major fundraiser platform that serves to bring music and art lessons, experiences, residencies, projects and instruments to under-served and remote communities in Saskatchewan.

A new partnership with the Eagle Creek Regional Park (SK) is seeing the festival moved to a fully-serviced campground with amenities such as washrooms and showers, a concession stand, disc golf, mini-golf and 9-Hole golf, children’s area, walking trails, electrical and nonelectrical camp spots, and space available for your horses if you choose to ride there!

Doylefest features 34 different musical acts, children's performances, face painting, tie dying, old fashioned family games and late night jamming. Tickets are $35 for the day, or $50 for a full weekend and available at the gate or online. The festival runs Friday 5:30 pm - 12 pm, Saturday 11 am - 1 am, and Sunday 11 am - 3:30 pm. Dollars And Sense

armers understand this concept well. If your costs balloon, it doesn’t matter what your yield is. To put cash in the bank, you need a yield and a price above your costs. The best farmers focus heavily on the variables they can control.

Investors, on the other hand, often chase yield. They want high-yielding guaranteed investment certificates (GICs), and if they invest in the stock market, they want high dividend yields.

All else being equal, a higher-yielding GIC is better than a lower-yielding one.

But with GICs, there are a few key factors to keep in mind: 1. Credit Quality: In Canada, we are fortunate to have Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) protection, but that only covers up to $100,000 per account per financial institution. Institutions with weaker balance sheets must offer higher yields to attract capital, meaning investors taking those offers are accepting more risk.

2. Time Horizon and Inflation: Interest income in a non-registered account is taxed at your full marginal rate in Canada. Using 50% as an estimate, a 3% GIC yield leaves you with 1.5% after tax. If inflation comes in at 3%, you lose purchasing power every year. That trade-off might be acceptable for money you need in the next 1 to 3 years, but for longer horizons, exploring growth options is essential. (Holding GICs inside a TFSA or RRSP helps eliminate this immediate tax drag.)

3. Reinvestment Risk: When a GIC matures, you are at the mercy of whatever interest rates exist at that time. Compare this to a quality company with a history of growing its dividend payout. Dividend growth avoids that reinvestment cliff and helps your income compound over time.

When evaluating dividend-paying stocks, a very high yield can often be a red flag: 1. Yield Is a Function of Price: Dividend yield equals the annual payout divided by the stock price. If a stock priced at $100 pays a $4 dividend, that is a 4% yield. If the stock falls to $40 and keeps the $4 payout, the yield jumps to 10%. Double-digit yields often happen because the market has driven the stock price down due to deteriorating business fundamentals. Canadian telecommunication stocks are a prime example. Heavy competition and promotional pricing squeeze cash flows, leaving high yields at risk of getting cut. You can’t get blood from a stone.

2. Payout Ratios and Cash Flow: When a company pays its operating costs, employee salaries, and taxes, the remaining profit is its net income.

Management can reinvest this cash to grow future profits or pay it out to shareholders. The payout ratio measures the percentage of profit or cash flow going toward the dividend. A low payout ratio leaves plenty of cash to sustain the dividend and reinvest in the business.

It’s Not Just About Yield On the flip side, if a company's free cash flow payout ratio climbs above 100%, it is using debt or cash reserves just to maintain that payout.

That is unsustainable. Investors lured in by the income often end up with a negative total return when the stock price collapses and the dividend is cut.

Every year on Fuel Good Day, Co-op donates a minimum of five cents per litre of fuel sold at participating gas bars to local charities and non-profits.

This year, many local Co-ops led additional initiatives, such as BBQ events, prize games, c-store beverages, car washes and more, with proceeds contributing to the overall success of the event.

More than 220 organizations were selected as recipients for Fuel Good Day in 2025. Since the event began in 2017, we've raised approximately $5.6 million together, benefitting hundreds of organizations across Western Canada.

Weather, rainfall and humidity slowed crop development and harvest operations last week. While harvest has begun in some areas, mainly on early seeded pulse crops, spring and winter cereals, most crops are still developing and not yet ready to combine.

Harvest completion remains significantly below the five-year average of 15 per cent and the 10-year average of 12 per cent, but ahead of last year at this time, when 3 per cent of the crop had been harvested. The southwest leads in harvest progress at 9 per cent complete, followed by the southeast at 4 per cent, west-central at 2 per cent and east-central at 1 per cent.

Ag In Motion Reflects On 2026 Success Langham, Sask., July 27, 2026 – Ag in Motion is looking back on a strong and successful 2026 event, where innovation, collaboration and hands-on learning took center stage at Western Canada’s largest outdoor farm show near Langham, Sask. last week.

As Western Canada’s largest outdoor farm show, Ag in Motion offers producers a front-row view of emerging advancements through the Innovations Program, along with extensive live demonstrations and interactive exhibits across the site.

The 2026 show took place July 21 to 23 with three days of immersive demonstrations, crop tours, livestock features and cutting-edge agricultural technology. This year’s event attracted 31,877 visitors from across Canada, the United States and international destinations.

The Innovations Program also celebrated the evenings gold and silver winners. “Ag in Motion is built around sharing ideas and bringing the industry together to see what’s possible,” says show director Rob O’Connor. “The Innovations Program gives farmers an early look at new solutions and technologies, made possible through strong collaboration with our industry partners.”

Reflecting on the year, Ag in Motion show director Rob O’Connor emphasized the people behind the annual show and shared his gratitude for all the people who work hard each year to make this event happen.

Farmers saw and experienced innovations and practical solutions for their farming operations thanks to over 600 exhibitors attending the show from British Columbia to Quebec, as well as the United States, Australia and Poland.

International participation at Ag in Motion continues to expand, with official delegations visiting in 2026 from the United States, Australia, Ghana, India, Mexico, South Africa and Turkey.

This global presence reinforces Ag in Motion’s reputation for international collaboration and shows Ag in Motion is a critical world destination for agricultural advancement and development.

Post for Yourself, The Internet Isn't Listening Anyway

Y

ou spend twenty minutes editing a video, syncing the audio, and rewriting the caption three times before finally uploading it to TikTok, Facebook, X, Instagram, etc. Whether it's a 45-second clip of you around a campfire with family and friends, announcing a gym milestone, or weighing in on trending political discourse, the post-upload ritual is predictable. You close the app, wait two minutes, then reopen it. Zero engagement. Five minutes pass.

Three likes: one from your aunt, two from automated bots. You refresh. Wait.

Refresh again. A knot forms in your gut, a mix of rejection and creeping regret.

You second-guess the video, your timing, and ultimately yourself. It's a lowgrade erosion of self-esteem, looping through millions of minds every minute.

Taking a detached look at Domo's annual Data Never Sleeps report dispels any expectation that your work will be noticed, let alone engaged with. Every 60 seconds, over 500 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube, 70,000 photos are posted to Instagram, and hundreds of thousands of posts are shared on X. Essays, podcasts, memes, comments, video, and corporate marketing propaganda pour into the digital abyss every second. Believing that your personal hot takes, pictures of your consumerism, and thought-provoking memes will rise above this deluge isn't just optimistic; it's statistically absurd. It reveals a subtle main-character complex, the delusion that your mundane thoughts and "life happenings," most of which are staged, are significant enough to cut through the endless chatter. Think of the narcissism it takes to take a selfie and then think, "other people might want to see this."

Human attention is a finite, rapidly depleting resource. The constant flood of content buries your posts within seconds, but it's your lingering hunger for validation that keeps you posting repeatedly in hopes of being acknowledged. It's our need for recognition that makes social media psychologically sticky. A University of California news feature titled Can’t pay attention? You’re not alone; research led by Dr. Gloria Mark shows that our attention spans on any single digital screen have plummeted to an average of just 47 seconds. Your posts aren't just competing with millions of creators uploading content constantly; they're also up against multi-billion-dollar algorithmic engines developed by behavioural scientists to capture every microsecond of human attention.

This brings to light an uncomfortable truth about human ego. Expecting strangers scrolling through social media to care about your Italian vacation, bistro dinner, or latest career milestone is sheer self-deception. What makes people think total strangers will pause their routines to congratulate someone on a routine moment? It's an overinflated ego whispering a nonsensical lie, making a person believe their mundane opinions and personal moments will matter to anyone outside their immediate circle. Yet this delusion is becoming our dominant career ambition. Morning Consult data show that 57% of Gen Zers want to be influencers. Beneath this unrealistic career aspiration lies a collective

tragedy: millions desperately want to be heard in a crowded room, where everyone is so preoccupied with telling their own "look at me" stories that they aren't listening.

When you're constantly refreshing your feeds, you're chasing dopamine hits. Social media platforms are deliberately engineered around variable rewards, the same psychological mechanism that keeps gamblers glued to slot machines.

When a notification pops up, the brain gets a fleeting chemical surge; when it doesn't, a psychological crash follows. As social psychologist Dr. Jonathan Haidt documents in his book, The Anxious Generation, social media intentionally reorients users away from real-world relationships and toward an endless quest for digital validation. Relying on an uncontrollable algorithm for your self-esteem leads to ongoing anxiety.

When you tie your self-worth to likes, shares, and comments, you're handing your mental health over to corporate algorithms designed solely to keep you glued to screens. Relying on digital approval turns authentic self-expression into a stressful public performance, leaving you perpetually waiting for approval that never arrives.

The healthiest approach to online self-expression is to post strictly for yourself, with zero expectation of an audience. When you share a thought, a photo, or a video, do so because the act of creating brings personal clarity, joy, or satisfaction, and for no other reason. Whether three people see it or three thousand, your internal state shouldn't waver. Life is too short to spend it begging an algorithm for a fleeting moment of Internet visibility. Real human value never needs permission from an algorithm. The lack of an audience is the ultimate freedom.

If you post on social media hoping for engagement or, worse, seeking digital stardom, consider ending the habit of wasting time in the void. Redirect that time and energy on your immediate surroundings: your family, true friends, and local community. These are the physical spaces where your presence carries real weight, where character limits don't truncate conversation, human bonds aren't measured in double-taps, and your potential to "influence" is exponentially greater. Post online if you must, but do so with absolute indifference to the outcome. Your mental well-being is far too valuable to trade for meaningless digital applause, given the odds that it was never coming anyway.
