THE RM REVIEW

Most of us, probably, like to think that we have grown and matured since 6th grade, but sometimes I wonder about that (I wonder more often than sometimes, truthfully)

Bubble Gum Politics Down the Road

The teacher, in an attempt to make the lesson in civic politics interesting and relevant, had us stage a mock election

In those days, one of the popular candies was Double Bubble bubble gum, which sold for a penny each It was a small pink square of gum, which could be split into two pieces to make it easier to chew (which nobody ever did, unless you were maybe a girl) and had an inner wrapping of a colour comic with a joke or a riddle (of the 'Why did the chicken cross the road?' variety)

That grade school election has forever stained my political consciousness

I wonder just how much growth in maturity has there really been over all those years Has there been a growth in maturity or has there just been an increase in the selling price? But as cynical as that may sound, it wasn't that cynicism that deterred me from seeking a career in politics After all, at that point my future was golden I was "The Mayor" and Judy K had voted for me (me!) I was wearing shades my future was so bright

Ken Sowter Editor Endless Summer E? ditorial Announces their... 13th Annual Far m Sale 960 Valley Road Saskatoon, SK Friday September 16th 9:00am 5:00pm Saturday September 17th 9:00am 4:00pm Tr ees, Shr ubs & Shelterbelts For listing visit: www lakeshoregardencentre com Payment accepted: Debit, Visa, M/C, Amex, or Cash

Obviously this isn’t how I, or anyone, would ever plan their summer I have complete empathy for those that have to deal with loss, I am happy to have relatives from away stay with us and I am more than happy to be able host dinners to help out as well, but I have now booked a campsite for the month of September and will fish and golf every day that is left of my summer, before I become funeral #6 !

The campaign largely consisted of preparing and giving an election speech: what the candidate would do if elected mayor The rest of the class (The Citizenry) would then vote on who the winner (The Mayor) would be just like a real, big person, election

It was to be an exercise in democracy

It’s that time of year that I take stock of how my summer has gone Let’s see May 17 house guest arrive for a week May 22 attend wedding in Regina June 18 funeral #1 June 23 house guests arrive for a week June 25 funeral #2 host dinner for 30 July 17 house guests arrive for a week July 19 funeral #3 July 26 funeral #4 Aug 26 funeral #5 host dinner for 20

About four or five students were selected as candidates for election to the office of "The Mayor" The candidates were then to choose a classmate to act as a campaign manager

The vote, after all the speeches were given, was unanimous everybody, and I mean everybody, (even Judy K), voted for me voted for the free Double Bubble bubble gum, that is Judy K may have been the smartest kid in the class but the rest of them were obviously no dummies, either Winning that election cost about 30 cents (Mr J, the teacher, strong armed a piece for himself as well) and Wes and I split the cost (To pay off that debt, we had to collect 15 pop bottles and take them to the store to get the 2 cents per bottle deposit back )

The thing is, I just wasn't smart enough to be a politician (not then and, turns out, not now either) I just couldn't figure out a way to convince other people to collect pop bottles and then give the money to me Gum, anyone? It's free honest!

The smartest kid in the class at that time (and cuter than two buttons) was Judy K and she was one of those selected to be a candidate She delivered an absolutely excellent speech It was a speech so excellent that even I, as an opposing candidate, wanted to vote for her She promised to shorten the school day and reduce the number of school days She declared that she would fire all the mean teachers (including the big, burly, strap wielding principal) And she was going to put Coke instead of water in the drinking fountains who wouldn't vote for that? (And also, did I say?, she was as cute as two buttons )

Wes The Campaign Manager came up with the idea that in my election speech I would make the promise that anybody who voted for me would get a free Double Bubble bubble gum

My campaign manager, Wes T, wasn't as school smart as Judy K (nor was he even one button cute) He was just a guy more interested in playing baseball than in spelling or geography He was also one of my best friends and, as it turned out, he was more than smart enough he came up with an absolutely brilliant campaign strategy

The comic was always read just as quickly as the gum was chewed and was a big part of the gum's appeal (hey, we were kids!)

More than 50 years later, that election is still a significant and memorable moment in my life

In the spring of this year, a gentle man by the name of P J O'Rourke died at the too early age of 74 may he rest in peace Mr O'Rourke, among many other laudable achievements, was also a journalist and an author (with many books to his credit) as well as being a gifted public speaker He was also a cynic of the first order one of his novels was entitled "Don't Vote It Just Encourages the Bastards" He was my hero When I was in elementary school Grade 6, to be exact we had a class called Social Studies

Not long ago, to legitimately call yourself a filmmaker, you would have needed a distributor A novelist would need a publisher A musician would need to get a record deal A journalist would need to be affiliated with a news organization The education and work required to genuinely be part of the professions I just men tioned are no longer necessary After reading this article, you can pick up your smartphone, take pictures of your coffee table, upload them on Flicker, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or whatever platform you choose, and call yourself a photogra pher

With a smartphone and a few choice words in your social media bio(s), you can call yourself anything, from writer to musician to documentary filmmaker to photogra pher Being able to self identify as whatever we want to self identify as raises the question: Is this pseudo professional culture being created another harmful conse quence of social media?

Increasingly, individuals with lim ited social and family connections across Saskatchewan are receiving unwavering support in their time of need, thanks to the Red Cross Friendly Calls Program Since 2019, the program has grown exponen tially Friendly Calls Volunteers have made over 7600 calls to older adults in over 30 communities across the province The program is free to join, and the demand is high for volunteers “I thought there is something that I can do to reach out to someone just to make their day a little bit better,” adds Gisele Yarbrough, a Friendly Calls Volunteer “Quite frankly it has turned out to make my day bet ter as well ” For more information on being a Friendly Calls Volunteer or becom ing a participant, please visit www redcross ca/skfriendlycalls or call 1 888 335 3345 Media’s Hack on Journalism, Filmmaking and More Nick Kossovan Well Aged Compost

While I blame social media for many of our current social ills, social media has one undeniable positive, albeit a double edged sword Social media provides platforms for all voices to be heard Unfortunately, we're increasingly abusing this amazing digital soapbox; such is the human ego's need to be heard, recognized, be right, and feel entitled to self identify as it wishes the world to see it Is there a better medium than social media the Internet to be whatever "pseudo" we want to project?

Since they are not subjected to any editorial interference, they are free to push what they say are "creative boundaries" to succeed as a pseudo "whatever " Social media's incentive structure isn't designed to amplify accurate content In stead, it's designed to amplify and spread attention grabbing content, creating an "attention economy," leading to people creating content that is more likely to grab your attention than be accurate or unbiased

Nobody expects your content to be perfect; it's understood it'll be shaky What's im portant is that your content resonates with people Connecting with people is the key to a successful social media strategy There is no exact science to determine what will resonate with the general population or what will offend people beyond the obvious, which is why most social media learning is done by simply putting stuff out there and seeing what happens Yes, I'm saying social media is a game of "hit and miss "

As social media multiplies, competition for our attention also multiplies Thus, con tent considered "successful" isn't created to deliver unbiased news, beauty, art or even entertainment, but rather to trigger a response Not surprisingly, the easiest emotion to trigger is anger and outrage (Most outrage these days is virtue sig nalling, but some is sincere )

In the digital age, anyone can be a journalist; actually, anyone can claim any title they want Having a journalism degree or being affiliated with a news organization is no longer necessary Smartphones enable us to record and broadcast "news hap penings" to a public increasingly reliant on social media to find news and informa tion (READ: opinions) that confirms their beliefs

It's often Ukrainian citizens and enterprising individuals, rather than mainstream journalists, who capture what's happening in Ukraine through their photos and videos Similarly, Turkey's artillery bombardment on Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region being recorded by civilians

Smartphones have made us dangerous It is estimated there are more than five billion mobile devices in use today Studies predict that by 2025, 70% of internet users will only use smartphones to access the Internet

Every day, millions worldwide use their smartphones to take photos, make videos, or write texts documenting their reality and then share them on social media Until recently, journalism and filmmaking were difficult to break into, let alone make a decent living in, without proper training or connections Now, with almost everyone having a smartphone and access to social media, anyone can be a pseudo journalist or pseudo filmmaker; herein lies the danger Anyone can have the power to publish content, be it news items, opinions, videos, graphics, music, etc and create a follow ing Not only had our information consumption experience changed significantly, but who is creating the content we are consuming has also significantly changed

Media outlets used to decide when and how you would receive the news; the Inter net has changed that Now you don't receive the news on TV at 6:00 PM or 9:00 PM, with the morning or evening newspaper edition, or on the half hour on a news radio station Instead, 24/7, social media delivers the news and plenty of passionate dif fering opinions from conventional news sources, citizens who were on "the scene," and self identified "journalists " Thanks to the Internet, journalists no longer oc cupy an elite, authoritative platform from which to broadcast to a captive audience

Back in the day, when there were only four or five TV channels, the television sta tion didn't really have to worry about you clicking away; they just made the best shows they could Then cable came, and the choices multiplied tenfold Cable, paired with a remote, which meant the viewer didn't have to get up to change chan nels, forced television stations to offer content that kept you glued to the tube Today, globally, there's an infinite number of social media platforms providing every type of content (pictures, videos, news, fiction, information, opinions, movies, podcasts) imaginable, vying for your attention

“We can talk about any thing I can let go Relax a little bit and talk about something else You see life in a different perspective when you get a call like I do,” recalled Chantal Bisson, a participant of the CRC Friendly Calls Program in Saskatchewan “It’s very beneficial and for a little while you can forget your problems, your situation and listen to the other one It’s a two way Communication and it’s a benefit to both of us ”

RM Review S3 eptember w2022 ww.rmreview.net Social

This is why social media posts are becoming more outrageous Much of the content posted on social media by those seeking recognition as a journalist, filmmaker, pod caster, singer, or whatever, is created to gain attention, aka clickbait, and generate the two most sought after Internet metrics, clicks and views

A tweet from Tom Harrington (@cbctom) has as much journalistic weight as a tweet from a 23 year old Starbucks barista who filmed police violently arresting a home less man outside their store

Canadian Red Cross Friendly Calls

Making a difference in the lives of Saskatchewan residents

Nick Kossovan, a self described connoisseur of human psychology, writes about what's on his mind from Toronto You can follow Nick on Twitter and Instagram @NKossovan Regina, SK, August 15, 2022 Older adults in Saskatchewan have hailed the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) Friendly Calls program in sisting the program has trans formed their lives While the COVID 19 pandemic has significantly disrupted people’s way of life, the Red Cross in Saskatchewan is determined to con tinue providing support to isolated and/or lonely individuals through the Friendly Calls program According to Statistics Canada, so cial isolation and exclusion are re lated to serious negative health effects and reduced quality of life for seniors Friendly Calls is working to change this, by matching volunteers with participants over the phone of those who participate “If you are feeling lonely and you are feeling a little bit isolated The Red Cross can help you, ” says Luc Mullinder, CRC, Vice President, Saskatchewan The CRC Friendly Calls program pairs a trained Red Cross volunteer or staff member with an older adult who is feeling isolated or lonely, who may have limited social or fam ily connections, or who feels they could benefit from more social inter action

The value of having a measurable audience to speak to is obvious to anyone with even a passing understanding of social media (If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?) Therefore, you must offer something different to stand out among celebrities and influencers on social media platforms

Thanks to smartphones empowering its owner with the ability to instantly broad cast worldwide and being able to self identify as a "journalist," "filmmaker," "writer," "photographer," "graphic artist," "recording artist," or "radio (podcast) per sonality" to name a few of the professions now available to everyone, is merely a matter of semantics No one is qualified, and everyone is qualified With a smartphone in your pocket, you can become Canada's most read restaurant critic Want to be a travel reporter? Travel and blog with your smartphone Want to be a nature documentary filmmaker? Using your smartphone, film anthills or Japanese beetles mating in your local park and upload it to YouTube (Fun fact: 500 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute )

There's a saying, "Freedom of the press belongs to those who own one " The first thing the Internet devoured was journalism, the acquiring, processing, and publish ing of information When you're holding a smartphone a hand held mass commu nication tool you're holding a press

30 years ago, would any of the pseudo professions I mentioned have been possible?

The same holds true for filmmaking Smartphone made films can be uploaded to countless platforms No film distributor is necessary No need to attend film school

Successful online bloggers, vloggers a person who creates and shares video con tent online pseudo journalists, pseudo filmmakers, et al understand the impor tance of curating an audience They know a large audience will draw attention to their content who will like and share Additionally, they consider how their content may comfort the comfortable, afflict the afflicted, or court controversy As a result, the content they publish is often regarded as newsworthy or exposes injustices
