Thanksgiving Day

hanksgiving Day is the day of the year when we celebrate our gratitude for all the good things in our lives, the day of the year that we 'give thanks'. But with so many things to be thankful for, one day seems an insufficient amount of time to give a sufficient amount of thanks.

And the thing is, 'thanks' is such a small word, sometimes way too small to do justice to the action or occasion that precipitated it.

Because sometimes what we are saying thanks for is not just an action of the moment.

Sometimes it is also for the memory that goes long unforgotten, for the example it sets, for the memory of a "Wow" moment, for something that can have a profound impact on your outlook on life.

A few years ago, not long after getting my first driving license, I was out driving around the back roads of my home town, happy to have wheels, happy to be independent, happy to be able to go wherever I wanted to go.

Those were the days when cars, like my old Rambler sedan, didn't have locking gas tank covers and the whole tank cover was part of the fender and could be detached; it was also when the hood on the car didn’t have an internal release and also could be opened from the outside of the vehicle.

I was always 'losing' the gas tank cover. I suspected, and not without reason, that it was covering somebody else's gas tank. I was also always 'losing' the oil spout cover (located under the hood). I didn’t know how that got lost or where it went but suspected, perhaps uncharitably this time, that it was, like the gas spout cover, on somebody else’s oil spout.

The oil spout cover prevented oil from being blown out from the inside of the motor and making a mess, spraying oil over everything outside of the motor and under the hood.

While I was trying to figure out what to do about that lost spout cover, I stuffed a rag in the spout as a temporary fix - it seemed like a good idea at the time.

But of course, if it had been such a good idea, I wouldn’t have been parked on the side of the road with the hood up watching the oil-soaked rag on top of the motor smouldering and smoking.

While I was watching and dithering what to do, a pickup suddenly pulled up on the other side of the road. Three teen-agers piled out of the cab and two more hopped down out of the truck box, all of them holding the bottles of beer they had been drinking.

They swarmed over the front of my car, pouring beer over the burning rag under the hood - dousing the smoke and flames. Just as quickly, they all jumped back into the truck and took off, laughing and hooting, not even waiting long enough for me to stammer out my thanks.

by Brian Brannagan Sometimes, watching what other people do, with no thanks expected, is a lesson tucked away in how other folk comport themselves and on how I might want to consider comporting myself.

The south coast of BC isn't renowned for producing skilled drivers. This apparent lack of skill is particularly evident in winter. So I was sympathetic but not surprised when the neighbour lady told me about her son who had skidded off the road into a ditch after a light snowfall. The kid was a new driver not used to driving in the snow and had slid into a shallow ditch, shallow but still deep enough that he couldn’t get back onto the road.

A pickup with 3 husky young men stopped to help him and seeing the New Driver decal on his car rattled his chain a little, telling him that most people preferred driving on the road rather than in the ditch. Then the three young men managed to push, heave and wrestle the car back up out of the ditch, onto the road and ready to go. The lady's son tried to thank his rescuers but the driver of the pickup just shook it off saying, “Aah, I got laid off from my job today and I was looking for something good to do."

There's a "Wow" moment for you.

I learned another lesson at a funeral - this one about turning grief into gratitude.

(Notice that I use the word "learned" quite loosely here - in this case, I mean only that I was present for the lesson, like I was present in French class.) I was offering my condolences to a close relative of the deceased when she started to cry, saddened by the loss of the loved older family member.

She was grieving but also well aware of why she was grieving - she was grieving because she had, in her words, "married into such a wonderful family and has such a wonderful husband". Her tears were of grief for her loss but also tears of thanks for having been a part of the happiness and content that had occasioned the loss.

Another "Wow" moment.

And yet, sometimes the most vivid memories are the simplest.

I was standing on the sidewalk outside of the neighbourhood recreation centre waiting for my son to finish getting changed after his swimming lesson. It was a warm, sunny Saturday morning and I had my face turned up to the sun, enjoying the warmth on my face. I heard the front door of the recreation building slam and turned to see a young girl, maybe 5 years old, running out of the building and down the sidewalk.

About halfway along the sidewalk, she threw her arms in the air, calling out, “Yay, yay, I can run without falling, yay”.

What a bright, warm, sunny day it is remembering that - and being thankful for the memory.

I wish you all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving.

And may you all have as much reason to be thankful as the turkey who gets to wake up the day after Thanksgiving.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A Response to the Rebuttal of September 2025

I

've read both the original article (August) about wildfire smoke and coal, and last month’s (September) rebuttal, and I wanted to offer another perspective. What I appreciate about this discussion is that it shows how much people in Saskatchewan care about our province, our power supply, and our future.

First off, I share the gratefulness expressed towards our SaskPower workers.

Through blizzards, heatwaves, and storms, they work tirelessly to keep the lights on. That reliability is something we all depend on, and it deserves recognition.

As the original article points out, the smoke we’ve been living with is not just an inconvenience. It affects our health, our ability to enjoy the outdoors, and even our sports and community gatherings.

The rebuttal is right that many fires are started by people — sometimes accidentally, sometimes on purpose. But as forest experts, firefighters and insurance companies remind us, what makes today’s fires burn so much bigger is the hotter, drier climate conditions we’re experiencing. The spark may be human, but the fuel is the changing environment around us.

When it comes to power, the rebuttal writer is right to stress the importance of reliability. Coal and natural gas have been dependable sources for decades, and nobody is saying that we can simply switch them off overnight.

And as the original article mentioned, other provinces like Ontario, Manitoba, and even Alberta have already phased out coal. Their lights stayed on because they leaned on a mix of hydro, natural gas, and renewables.

Saskatchewan has some of the best wind and solar resources in the country — it would be a missed opportunity not to make the most of them.

The rebuttal also brought up CO₂. It’s true that plants need carbon dioxide to grow. But as scientists have explained, too much of it is like too much fertilizer — it throws the system off balance. As the original article noted, even courts around the world are recognizing that excess emissions carry real costs for health, economies, and communities. Here at home, farmers see it in unpredictable rains, drier soil, and tighter harvest windows. That’s not ideology — that’s lived experience.

I also understand the frustration about policies, taxes, and politics that don’t always feel fair. Nobody likes to feel blamed or preached at.

But while it isn’t about pointing fingers at any individual, we can’t ignore that the decisions that Premier Scott Moe and the Sask Party are making influence our environment. Accountability matters when those choices move us further from the climate goals we share as a country. Investing in clean energy isn’t about punishment — it’s about opportunity: cleaner air for our kids, healthier communities, and new long term jobs and employment right here at home.

At the end of the day, whether you agree more with the original article or the rebuttal, I think we can all agree on this: we want Saskatchewan to thrive.

We want reliable, affordable power. We want our families to breathe easier on summer days. And we want to leave a strong, stable foundation for the next generation. That’s why it makes sense to continuously improve on our energy system — not by clinging to the past, but by investing in a future where we can have both reliability and clear skies.

Delisle Library “Dino-Mania” Summer Reading Club Winner Receives New Bike & Helmet

D

elisle Branch of the Wheatland Regional Library held a very successful Summer Reading Club this year entitled “Dino-Mania” with a total of sixty-nine children participating.

A kickoff concert featuring children’ s performer, Mr. Eric (Eric Petkau) was held on July 9th in the Lodge Room.

Children who joined the program were assigned a dinosaur player piece.

Every library day that the participants borrowed a book from the library, they were allowed to roll the dice to advance along a pathway with

the goal of reaching the Big Valley by the end of summer.

A weekly prize of a family swim pass valid at any Saskatoon indoor pool was provided by the Delisle Co-op.

The Goose Lake Lodge #99 of the Masons again partnered with us by providing a bicycle and helmet, funded by their “Bikes For Books” program.

Emerson was the lucky winner of this prize.

Congratulations to all the winners and the library staff look forward to seeing everyone again next summer.

Vanscoy Senior Citizens Club

hank you to all who brought food to our quarterly potluck supper on September 18th. A total of 35 people attended. Karen Sondergaard did the honors of blowing out the candles on the birthday cake and Marten Sondergaard was our draw winner.

A short meeting was held after in which Daryl Giesbrecht volunteered to be our representative on the Vanscoy Rec Board and Linda Stevens stepped forward to be our treasurer. A huge thank you to these two for taking the positions. A special thanks was given to Jo Ann Howdle for her time as our treasurer, wishing her well as she makes the transition to her new home.

You Do Not Own Your Social Media

S

ocial media platforms offer a compelling deal: they provide, for free, the infrastructure, the audience, and the tools that promise exposure (read: ego-boosting recognition). In return, they quietly hold your audience hostage. On the surface, this seems fair. After all, the platform is providing a valuable dopamine-ensuring service.

A skeletal village is what I see when I look at my over 23,000 subscribers to my Substack job-hunting newsletter, The Art of Finding Work. Those subscribers aren't mine; they belong to Substack. I built my audience, but I can't truly reach them on my terms. The same applies to my over 12,500 Instagram followers, my 165,000 X/Twitter followers, or my 19,850 LinkedIn connections.

Because it's uncomfortable to acknowledge, social media users, especially creators, overlook the truth that social media is fundamentally about renting, not owning. Essentially, I'm a tenant on someone else's property, paying rent with my time and content. For a long time, I celebrated (Okay, I admit, "boasted.") the number of followers I have, as if they were assets I own.

They're not.

While I own the content I create, the social media platform holds a broad license to use my content, since they technically own my account and its following. If you read a platform's terms of service—who does—platforms grant

themselves extensive rights to your photos, videos, and other intellectual property, without requesting your permission or compensating you. Platforms have significant carte blanche control, which you agreed to when you signed up and created your account, over your content, even being able to use it for commercial purposes. Furthermore, they can change the rules at any time, which is unnerving.

Several years ago, I finally established in the back of my mind that I'm only a "guest" on any social media platform and that my participation is dependent on my adherence to a long list of terms and conditions, which, like most people, I haven't read.

The way platforms lock you in is by ensuring that your posts have a short visible shelf life, reminiscent of the days when slaves on ships had to keep rowing to get the owner of the ship to their destination. A short shelf life enslaves you to the platform, as you need to continue posting to maintain ego-boosting likes and comments, which is how the owner of the platform metaphorically steers their ship to profitability.

Then there's the algorithm, akin to a ship's rudder, which the platform owns and controls without input from its tenants. When Instagram tweaks its algorithm, as it habitually does, my reach can drop by 80% overnight. There's also the issue that platforms are free, without having to consult their tenants, to pivot their business model, or can simply cease, such as Friendster, Orkut, Vine, Google+, and Bebo, without warning, my followers, whom I worked hard to grow, become unreachable, trapped behind the platform's walls. Additionally, there's the real possibility of your account being suspended or shut down, which happens frequently due to a misstep outside of the platform use guidelines, which you agreed to when you signed up.

Social media companies exemplify the adage, attributed to the artist Richard Serra, who was referring to television, "When the product is free, you're the product." In the eyes of a social media company, its users are commodities to be sold to advertisers. Personal data, attention (eyeballs), and digital interactions are collected and analyzed to create targeted advertising, which is the primary revenue stream for these "free" platforms.

Platform-provided metrics can be seductive; however, they only tell part of the story. Having 28,500 Facebook followers sounds impressive, but what does it mean when you can't reliably reach even a fraction of those followers? The metrics that truly matter aren't visible on your profile page.

They're found in the depth of engagement, the quality of connections, and most importantly, the sustainability of your posting efforts.

My experience as a heavy social media user has led me to the conclusion that social media platforms are masters at the art of making their services feel essential, especially to businesses, as if they're a public utility, and fostering pseudo feelings of a sense of community and belonging. Platforms start you out with generous organic reach that inevitably encourages you to build a following. Steadily, they dial back your ability to reach the very audience you've built. It's a subtle form of vendor lock-in, masked as a free service.

The real price we pay isn't measured in dollars. It's measured in the amount of time spent, time we could be spending nourishing our real world, chasing views, likes and comments. Every time a platform tweaks its algorithm, people, particularly creators, scramble to adapt their content, voice, and entire creative process to match what they believe is the platform's new preferences. The constant pursuit of what platform owners strategically keep out of reach is the Greek tragedy of our times, keeping us glued to screens that we voluntarily allow to influence our emotions and self-esteem.

Bottom line: Your existence on social media is at the whim of the companies that provide those services.

Canadian Hopelessness On The Rise

fter nine years of Justin Trudeau, life has never been so hard for Canadians. Housing costs have doubled after Trudeau created the worst housing inflation in the OECD, while Canadians are having to pay $700 more for food this year than they did in 2023. Millions of people are having to rely on food banks to survive, including one in ten people in Toronto.

The damage that Trudeau has done to Canada was exhibited again today through a Statistics Canada report on the well-being of Canadians. In this, Statistics Canada reported that life satisfaction is on the decline. In fact, only 48.6 percent of Canadians now feel “highly satisfied” with their lives.

This is down from 54 percent just three years earlier.

Canadians are also feeling more pessimistic about their futures. “Hopefulness about the future” dropped from 65 percent in 2021 to 59.7 precent in 2024.

The decline in life satisfaction is especially apparent in young adults. Life satisfaction for younger adults is declining 4% per year since 2021.

This year, less than 4 in 10 young adults were highly satisfied. No wonder young people are feel-

ing hopeless after Trudeau doubled the costs of rent and downpayments, with seven in ten Canadians (72 percent) saying they have given up on ever owning a home, according to an Ipsos report.

But this sense of hopelessness is not limited to young adults. In 2024, “Canadians of all age groups were feeling less hopeful about their future” than they did in 2021.

As Statistics Canada noted in their report, “rising consumer prices have coincided with an increasing proportion of Canadians facing financial challenges.” Life is getting worse for Canadians because Justin Trudeau poured billions of dollars of spending onto the inflationary fire while his carbon tax hiked up the cost of everything.

Canadians deserve a government that will turn the hurt Trudeau has caused into the hope that people need. Only Common Sense Conservatives will build a better future for Canada by axing the tax, building the homes, fixing the budget and stopping the crime.

We would also like to encourage community members to come forward with new ideas, do you have an event you would like to put on, do you require a rental for an art class, a dance class, a book club, wedding shower, baby shower, think outside the box and reach out to our President Genevieve Innes, VP Carrie Latta, Secretary Karen Duguid or myself Sue Sawicki Treasurer.

We are hoping to resume our weekly exercise classes as soon as possible and will let everyone know once we have secured a start date, days of the week and time. A reminder billiards are every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:00pm. Canasta (Hand & Foot) is every Monday and Friday at 1:00pm. All activities take place at the Asquith Seniors Centre. verall harvest progress has remained steady; however, the rain and high humidity stalled progress in the eastern portion of the province and caused a delayed start in the west. As a result of the rains and high humidity, areas with cereal crops still in the field are seeing poor quality and sprouting. High temperatures over the weekend and into this coming week will help farmers progress or finish up.

Harvest is complete for winter wheat and fall rye with field peas sitting at 99 per cent combined and lentils at 96 per cent. Spring wheat is 73 per cent combined, durum 78 per cent, oats 70 per cent and barley 86 per cent. Many farmers moved to combining canola this week and 42 per cent of that crop is now combined. Other oilseeds – flax, soybeans and mustard – sit at 18 per cent, 23 per cent and 62 per cent, respectively.

Minimal rain was seen this week across the province. The most rain fell east of Yorkton recording 44 millimetres (mm) in the Rhein area and 18 mm in the Calder area. The only other significant rainfall events were in the Carnduff and Blaine Lake areas which both received 20 mm.

Topsoil moisture conditions declined across the province this week with many areas not receiving any rain. Cropland topsoil moisture sits at two per cent surplus, 59 per cent adequate, 32 per cent short and seven per cent very short. Hayland topsoil conditions are three per cent surplus, 51 per cent adequate, 29 per cent short and 17 per cent very short. Pasture topsoil conditions are two per cent surplus, 40 per cent adequate, 36 per cent short and 22 per cent very short.

Since August, pasture conditions have decreased slightly. Provincially, one per cent of pastures are in excellent condition, 31 per cent in good condition, 39 per cent in fair condition, 20 per cent in poor condition and nine per cent in very poor condition.

This week most of the crop damage reported was caused by wind and dry conditions. There were also some reports of low-lying areas being lost to water accumulation. Waterfowl damage was more present this week as geese, cranes and other waterfowl move across the province.

With an increased number of machinery fires being seen, we would like to remind producers to have fire mitigation resources ready, blow off their combines regularly and take precautions when working around powerlines. The public is also reminded to exercise caution when encountering machinery and equipment travelling on roadways.
