Regina, SK – Access Communications Co-operative (Access) is proud to announce that its registered charity, the Access Communications Children’s Fund (ACCF), donated $815,752 in 2023, to 87 recipients. This is the largest single year for donations in the ACCF’s history.

“This was a special year for the Children’s Fund,” said Carmela Haines, President & CEO of Access. “The Access Communications Children’s Fund TV Bingo saw a rise in interest during the pandemic. This has allowed us to make a significant impact in our province, this year, for children at risk or in need.”

The ACCF provides funding to non-profit organizations that help children at risk, in need, or are our most vulnerable. The funds are targeted for three key areas: Health and Wellness; Education and Literacy; Social Inclusion.

One of the organizations supported was a capital project for the SCEP Centre in Regina, an organization that is an intensive early intervention preschool program, which supports children with complex needs and offers guidance and support for their parents/caregivers.

"SCEP CENTRE - Early Intervention and Training Services has been providing intensive, therapeutic support to young children and their families for over 55 years,” said Shauna Forbes, Executive Director of the SCEP Centre. “With this very generous donation to our program from Access Communications Children's Fund, we have been able to continue our commitment to providing support to some of Regina's most vulnerable children and families. Access Communications Children's Fund has supported our program for many years in various ways! Thank you so much for your continued generosity!"

Access was also proud to support the “Break Room” at Bready School in North Battleford. This sensory room is designed to support everyone from students with specific needs, to those

who need a moment to practice mindfulness and regulation.

“The Bready Break Room, also known as the sensory room, is nearly complete and has already proven to be a valuable addition to Bready School. Every student looks forward to time in this multi-purpose space for a variety of reasons – to reset, to be active, to energize, to be ready to learn, to regulate, to calm, to cooperate, to connect with others, to restore, or to have fun,” said Rhonda Simon, Principal at Bready School. The generous donation from Access Communications Children's Fund has truly been appreciatedwithout it, students would not benefit from this room for many months yet. Our committee was emotional upon news of the donation, as we knew what it meant to us and what it would mean to students. Many thanks, on behalf of all staff of students.”

The ACCF’s main source of funding comes from player cards purchased for Access Communications Children’s Fund TV Bingo, which airs Saturdays at 5 p.m. on all AccessNow TV Community Channels and the AccessNow TV app. The funds are administered by a volunteer board of directors and allocations committee. My daughter has always been a ‘water baby’, she has always loved the water and always loved swimming. She started swimming lessons when she was barely a year old. Put her in the water and she would be as happy as... well, as happy as a duck. But cuter, of course, much, much cuter.

She continued with swimming lessons through all her grade school years and when she was old enough and her swimming skills had progressed sufficiently, she got hired on with the local municipal pool as a swimming instructor, And all the while, she continued to improve and upgrade her own skills, obtaining lifeguard certification and then working part-time as a lifeguard while she finished high school.

At the same time, I was continuing my efforts to prepare her for dealing with boys. I tried to advise her and counsel her about boys. I warned her even, telling her that I had some experience with the ways boys 'think' (for want of a better word) and I could absolutely and confidently assure her that none of that 'thinking' was good. Not good at all.

(And for the record, I also counselled my son similarly about girls - not that I knew how girls 'think', of course, because that is a mystery for the ages, but that encounters with girls could quite often be problematic and sometimes even seriously jeopardizing.)

(As a further aside: intimate relationships are veritable mine-fields that even mature adults don't always navigate with impunity. High-ranking corporate executives get fired, their careers vaporized; movie stars take turns raking each other over the coals in highly publicized court cases; heads of government go down in flames - all due to intimate relationships that went awry.

It is beyond me how on earth we can expect children - our children - not to become victims similarly.)

Other fathers at my workplace, those with daughters, would offer advice about how I should deal with the boys in my daughter's life. But most of that advice was just a tad on the harsh side and not particularly useful. For example, one father suggested that I should shoot the first boy who came calling on my daughter and leave his body on the porch as a warning to others.

I disregarded that particular piece of advice, of course, thinking it was just sort of cringey, dark humour. And of course, dark humour or not, I considered myself to be much more evolved than that, more nuanced. And I didn't have a porch.

But Cass, my daughter, was like most other teen-agers - a lot of what Dad says is just "yadda, yadda, yadda"just noise to be tolerated and ignored. Meanwhile, she really liked her job at the pool - she got to swim almost every day and she liked working in a recreational environment where people were having fun.

7,000 copies of the RM Review are published monthly and direct mailed for free to homes in the communities shown in the map to the right. Out of area subscriptions are available for $36/yr. As well, it is available for free pick-up at local news stands throughout this distribution area.

Porches

But she also took her responsibilities seriously - she was there to help people, to look out for them and maybe even save lives, too.

She would usually come home with some good stories about her day - stories which she would deliver in the vernacular of the lifeguard.

For example, a ‘dry save’ would be when a swimmer in distress would be thrown a life ring with a rope attached to it. The distressed swimmer would grab the ring, hopefully, and then be pulled ashore without the lifeguard having to jump into the pool and get wet - hence a dry save.

A ‘wet save’ then, of course, would be when the distressed swimmer was too panicked to grab the ring and the lifeguard would have to dive in and physically haul in the victim thus getting wet in the process,

Cass came home one day telling us she had to perform a ‘wet save’ on a young man. He was in the deep end of the pool and was floundering, calling for help. Cass was on duty at the time and immediately threw him the life ring with the attached rope. The young man, however, was too panicked to grab the ring and so Cass had to jump in, swim over to him and physically drag him to the edge of the pool and safety.

The young man, once he got his breath back and was sufficiently composed, then tried to explain himself by saying he had forgotten he didn’t know how to swim.

(Yes,yes, I know - my eyebrows headed north at this point, too.)

Cass then went on to say that a short time later she had to respond to another call for help - and quickly threw out the life ring. But again the swimmer was too distressed to grab the ring and again Cass had to dive in and haul in the floundering swimmer. It was the same young man - he had forgotten - again - that he didn’t know how to swim.

Cass got that far in her story before I interrupted her.

‘Cassie’, I said, ‘Cassie, Cassie, Cassie - that fella is obviously just way too stupid to live...‘

And here the wailing started ‘Dadddd...’

But I continued, ‘Or he’s hitting on you...’

And the wailing went on ‘...ddddyyy...’

But I soldiered on and continued to the finish, ‘In either case, the bottom of the pool is a good place for him."

The wailing subsided as my daughter started to wonder if maybe I was just teasing.

And just to keep the noise level down, I told her that, yes, I was just teasing.

Honest.

MP Report

Kelly Block MP April 22, 2024 Costs are out

After eight years of Justin Trudeau, the budget is still not balancing itself.

Trudeau has spent, Canadians are broke, and the country is broken.

Costs are out of control.

Housing costs have doubled, and middle-class Canadians are forced to live in tent encampments in nearly every city across Canada. Food prices have skyrocketed with thousands of Canadians joining a Facebook group to discuss ways to get a meal out of a dumpster and an inflationary carbon tax that, with the help of the NDP, Trudeau plans to quadruple to 61 cents a litre.

Instead of learning from his costly mistakes, Trudeau has doubled down on the same failures with $40 billion of new spending. That's to say, $2,400 for every family in new government debt and new inflationary spending. And now, for the first time in a generation, we're spending more on debt interest than on healthcare.

That's money for bankers and bondholders rather than doctors and nurses.

Corman

And now, Justin Trudeau’s Finance Minister says that what Canadians really need is a "stronger" government. Their idea of a stronger government is to make for weaker and more miserable citizens. While the Liberal government pretends to give Canadians everything they want, it's a government that is taking everything they have.

Common Sense Conservatives want big Canadian citizens with a smaller and more efficient government. A state that is the servant and not the master. Where our priorities are to axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget and stop the crime.

As soon as the NDP takes away its support from Justin Trudeau, Canada will have a carbon tax election where the people will be able to make decisions for themselves.

A Canada where people can earn powerful paycheques that can buy affordable food, gas, and homes in safe neighbourhoods.

A Canada that is based on the common sense of the common people.

Park Official Community Plan Open House Meetings in May

Residents, business owners, advocacy groups and other stakeholders are invited to attend a come-and-go Open House to discuss Corman Park’s proposed Official Community Plan (OCP).

Wednesday, May 8, R.M. of Corman Park Council Chambers 3:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Discussion will include topics such as: the future land use map, residential development in Corman Park, and an updated vision and growth strategy for Corman Park. The open houses will also provide an update on the South R.M. Area Development Plan project. This project will help inform and guide the development of the OCP policy framework moving forward.

Social Media Wants Your Money

The American way (read: capitalism's primary goal), which greatly influences the Canadian way, has always been about separating you from your money. I'd wager that within moments of the Internet becoming available to the public on April 30, 1993, many asked themselves, "How can I use this new medium to hawk stuff?" In 1997, SixDegrees launched the first online social networking site, marking the birth of social media. Almost immediately, Hucksters, charlatans, snake oil merchants, and outright fraudsters tumbled out of the woodwork alongside

corporate advertisers. Have you seen the online ad for the Bluetooth-enabled Shiatsu foot massager? How about the one for the organic mushroom supplement powder? How about the micro-magnetic slimming earrings? Initially, social media thrived on feel-good content. However, social media companies have bills to pay and profits to make; thus, understandably, monetization became their focus, resulting in social media being flooded with ads for cheap, bright, and shiny items. Today, you can't scroll through your feed without being inundated with

ads promoting supplements, subscription services, or self-proclaimed "experts" teaching a craft they've never mastered.

Remember the days of browsing the Internet and having to venture off to visit the seller's website? The creation of social commerce—the marriage of e-commerce with social media—eliminated the need to venture off. Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and TikTok now have native social commerce features baked into their respective platform. This feature, when leveraged by Svengali-like marketing strategies introducing you to products you didn't know existed, not surprisingly, leads to impulse purchases.

Who knew there was an avocado slicer 3-in-1 tool for hassle-free avocado preparation for only $3.47? According to the ad, there are less than 400 left. At that price, it's a must-have. Never mind that I can't recall the last time I ate an avocado.

As kitchen junk drawers, closets, garages, basements, and storage lockers will testify, creating fear of missing out (FOMO) by offering a cheap product and claiming inventory is dwindling is a proven marketing strategy. It's anyone's guess what percentage of our online and offline consumerism are impulse buys.

Thanks to social commerce, a "marketer" can present you with a wellpriced hoodie as you scroll through TikTok. To take advantage of this deal without overly interrupting your viewing of shuffle dance videos, simply click "Buy."

I find it exhausting to scroll through my social media feeds, feeling that everyone is trying to sell me something. Social media has become cluttered with "Buy me!" and become an algorithmic traffic driver for targeted advertising. Then there's the fakery factor.

•Despite all the claims, there's no "free." Everything has a price: time (attention) and/or money.

•There's no genuine "I want to help you" advice, only pitches and sales funnels.

•The freebies are shallow. A life improvement e-book offered for "free," in exchange for your email address, is just recycled advice you've already heard or read. There's nothing revolutionary or exclusive about the advice, as was promised.

How many businesses behave on social media irritates me. Naively, I assumed social media would evolve into a peopleto-people medium, like the whole world sharing one big kiss, as opposed to the business-to-consumer digital marketplace it has become.

Weight loss programs, get-rich-quick schemes, influencers shilling products that don't produce results, Facebook friends selling beauty products, salons pushing Botox and fillers and ads that intentionally make asterisk text impossible to read. Companies that stretch the definition of "free," "guarantee," and "unlimited." Products designed to wear out quickly. Subscription-based models for everything. At some level, social media and the Internet thrive on veiled scams.

My angelic side believes that those behind the transformation of social media into a Turkish bazaar simply want what we all want: money to buy time and freedom. Because our economic system works like a Ponzi scheme, everyone, to some degree, tries to make money, to move around with their consumerism, by taking advantage of others. In other words, who am I to judge those who sin differently than I do?

When you consider how social media companies generate their revenue, it's hard to condemn their monetization efforts.

Your role in social media isn't that of user. You're the product offered to advertisers and those who are dreaming of making money on social media. Platforms aggregate your attention (aka views), which they then sell to advertisers. It shouldn't come as a surprise that your attention span and actions are being commodified when you're on social media.

In economics and finance, there's an adage that's especially relevant here: "There's no such thing as a free lunch." From an economic perspective, nothing is ever free. In general, if something appears to be free, like a social media account, you're paying for it in some tricky way.

Always consider where your money is going. Consider your life goals more carefully. Don't let social media dictate your dreams. Sadly, social media has replaced the American dream of working hard and making money with the dream of not working hard and making money, resulting in our social media feeds being inundated with shameless attempts to separate us from our money.

REGINA, SK – From June 18-20, 2024, farmers, developers, industry professionals, and exhibitors will converge in Regina to explore the latest advancements in agricultural technology and to visit the many exhibitors that will be in attendance, at Canada’s Farm Show Regina, SK, presented by Viterra (CFS).

Over 30 industry leaders gathered in Regina to launch the 2024 show with AgTech being the focus of this year’s show. Building on our pillars of innovation, education, and collaboration, the 2024 show will have some returning favourites and brand-new elements. “Agriculture is at the heart of our province, and it is integral to REAL,” said Roberta Engel, Acting President, and CEO of REAL. “In 1884 we started with a fair that brought together 150 community-minded individuals to exchange goods, information, and experiences. This year marks 140 years, for REAL, and CFS is an evolution of that first fair. It highlights all that makes our community strong- innovation, education, and collaboration, and we look forward to welcoming you all in June.”

A highlight of the show is the return of Cultivator’s 24 Hour Start Up|AgTech. This event brings together the best and brightest in agriculture, technology, and business to pitch ideas, form teams, and build a minimum viable product in just 24 hours. The Global AgTech Summit will further connect farmers, founders, and funders for a one-day session, featuring industry guests and experts sharing insights into ag tech and innovation.

Viterra is proud to once again sponsor Canada’s Farm Show Regina, SK, in support of such innovative initiatives.

“For 46 years, Canada’s Farm Show has showcased the best products and latest innovations in agriculture. It provides our industry an excellent opportunity to come together to engage in meaningful dialogue about how we can continue to improve together,” said Kyle Jeworski, CEO of Viterra Canada. “This makes the relationship between Canada’s Farm Show and Viterra a natural fit. We have a mutual interest in improving the business of agriculture, and supporting Canada’s reputation as a safe, reliable, and sustainable supplier of food and feed products.”

Returning this year is the Premier’s breakfast, where Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe will deliver his State of Agriculture in Saskatchewan address on day one of Canada’s Farm Show, presented by Viterra. This event is done in partnership with the Regina and District Chamber of Commerce, watch for ticket details.

HThe 2024 Innovation Awards sponsored by Farms.com and Greenwave Innovations will be presented at the Premier’s breakfast. They are awarded by a panel of judges who have a practical understanding of how productivity on farms can be improved through innovation. All innovations will be on display throughout the show.

The Launch Pad presented by Deloitte will once again serve as the platform where innovations become reality. And we are pleased to announce that Degelman Industries will be launching their highly anticipated Heavy Duty Staggered Ripper (HDSR) on the launch pad stage on day one of the show.

“For over 40 years Degelman Industries has always viewed Canada’s Farm Show as a premiere venue to launch new products into the agricultural landscape and this year is no different,” said Derek Molnar, Marketing Manager with Degelman Industries. “We can’t wait to take to the Launch Pad stage for the exclusive Canadian introduction of our next line of high-performance tillage equipment; the HDSR Series of Heavy Duty Staggered Ripper.”

Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (STEP) is working closely with CFS to ensure international buyers and exhibitors attend the show. We anticipate over 100 international delegates.

As always, exhibitors at Canada’s Farm Show Regina, SK, presented by Viterra, will be ready for visitors wanting to learn more from those behind the products they rely on. Exhibitors are ready to launch new products at this year’s show and showcase their latest innovations in our extensive indoor space. Additionally, a new Exhibitor Reception will take place on Wednesday night, poised to become a staple of the show.

The 2024 show will once again provide an opportunity for companies to recruit with our Launch your Career Ag initiative. We are pleased to partner with the Agricultural Manufacturers of Canada where we will host a career fair on Thursday afternoon. All students will be given complimentary entrance to the show on Thursday to attend.

Single day passes ($15 plus taxes and fess)are available this year as well as a three-day pass ( $30 plus taxes and fees). Guests under 17 get for free. They can be purchased in advance by visiting www.canadasfarmshowreginask.com where complete show details can also be found.

ay is once again available to producers for salvage at no cost in provincial highway ditches during spring and summer months.

Before and including July 8, landowners, or lessees nearest/adjacent to the ditch have the first option to cut or bale material, but after that day anyone can cut and bale without permission from the adjacent landowner or lessee if no salvage operations have already begun. It is recommended that participants contact their local Ministry of Highways (ministry) Office to provide contact information and limits on where they are salvaging hay to avoid disputes.

Hay must be cut at a uniform height in ditches and bales must be placed at least eight metres away from the shoulder of the highway. Farmers may salvage hay anytime during the spring or summer months. Landowners or lessees nearest/adjacent to the highway ditch have the first option to cut or bale this material unless the mowing contractor has begun salvage. Bales must be removed by August 8, otherwise they may be subject to removal and disposal by the ministry. After August 8, bales must be removed immediately following hay-

ing operations. The ministry may also remove and dispose of hay bales in locations deemed unsafe for motorists.

Ministry staff may either make a courtesy call to participants or place orange flags in bales that have exceeded the specified removal period. Flags will be marked with a removal date, that allow participants one week to remove bales, if public safety is not at risk. Participants not adhering to the requirements may become ineligible to hay on the highway right-of-way.

The ministry hires contractors to mow along the highway shoulders. Mowing may also be completed near some highway intersections and interchanges, railway crossings and tourism facilities.

The hay salvage and mowing program provides:

•free hay to farmers

•a neat appearance

•improved visibility

•better control of brush and noxious weed growth

•adequate snow storage in ditches during the winter months
