Delisle Sports Celebrity Dinner

T

he Delisle Sports Celebrity Dinner is quickly approaching and organizers are announcing that they have secured three keynote speakers for the event. Attending will be Chico Resch, Bryan Trottier and Billy Smith. With the recent passing of Mike Bossy and Guy Lafluer, these speakers will likely be sharing some interesting moments they had with those icons. While advance tickets will not be going on sale until June 1st, some sponsorship packages are still available. Sponsors will be treated to a VIP Lounge experience ahead of the dinner, where they will rub shoulders with the celebrity speakers and will have an opportunity to receive once in a lifetime autographs and photos. Everyone that attends this event will be able to take part in both live, and silent, auctions featuring unique NHL memorabilia, as well as dining with the NHL celebrities. Tickets always sell out, but a sponsorship guarantees your entry to the event. This fundraiser supports local sports, culture and recreation organizations in and around Delisle. For more information call Kenny at 306-241-3725 or scan the QR code on the poster to visit them on Facebook.

I’m Gonna Write a Letter

I

’m mad as hell... and I’m going to write a letter. We all know that as Canadians we have a reputation of being polite... and that we show our anger by writing a letter ! This is not necessarily accurate, as we have recently seen that sometimes we lose our minds and set-up camp on the front steps of innocent people in Ottawa while enjoyng a month long pig roast complete with bouncy castles. But usually we just write a letter. The post office in Ukraine recently released a new postage stamp that commemorates the iconic moment when Ukrainian soldiers on Snake Island responded to the Russian flagship’s demand that they surrender with... “Russian Warship Go F*ck Yourself”

This stamp depicts the silhouette of a Ukrainian soldier flipping the bird at that, now sunk, Russian flagship. I suggest that as Canadians, we do what we do best, and purchase as many of these stamps as possible and use them to post letters to Vladimir Putin to let him know how the world feels about his insane attack on the people of Ukraine. Maybe insert a brief note asking him what his mother would think about his actions ? He could reflect on that this coming Mother’s Day. If the Kremlin mailroom is drown in letters bearing this stamp, postmarked from around the globe, he may consider that starting World War III may not be working out very well for him. You will need to search out the stamps on your own but I have provided the Kremlin’s mailing address here for you. President Putin 23, Ulitsa Ilyinka, 103132, Moscow, Russia I strongly suggest that you not put your return address on the envelope, lest someone put poison in your underwear ! Ken Sowter Editor

Mother’s Day M

y mother was born in Hamburg, Germany. When World War II started, she was just 13. She spent the entirety of her teen-age years - 13 when the war started, 19 when it ended - dodging bullets, sheltering from bombs, being deafened by air raid sirens - just like hundreds of millions of other people during those horrible, horrendous years of unspeakable atrocities. Horrible, horrendous atrocities that most of us, infinitely more fortunate than we realize, only know about from second-hand (at best) accounts or, disgustingly, from video games. By the time the war ended, my mother's parents were both dead and the country around her had been bombed into rubble and ruin. A year later, in 1946, my mother emigrated from Germany to England (of all places) where she worked as a nurse. Four years later she married my father, a British ex-soldier. Five years after that, in 1955, she was emigrating to Canada, spending a week on an ocean liner crossing the Atlantic with 3 children - a preschooler, a toddler (that would be me) and a new born not yet weaned. My father had gone ahead to a small town in BC to secure accommodation and finalize the details of his employment as a school principal (that's his story and he always stuck to it). My mother arrived at the port of Montreal, managed her way off the boat to the train station and embarked on the week long train journey to Trail, a small town in the south-east corner of the province. (One week on a boat followed by another week on a train with 3 small children - she survived 6 years of war, but this was getting to be just a bit too much.) In 1960 my father underwent open heart surgery - at that time, open heart surgery was relatively innovative, more of a theory than an established practice - and things weren't looking too good from my mother's perspective (nor my father's, of course). She was faced with the possibility of being a single mother of now four small children in a foreign country, thousands of miles from her homeland, speaking a language not her mother tongue with no family and meagre financial resources. But by this time, she was pretty lucky at dodging bullets, and she dodged that one, as well. (Dad, too, was quite pleased).

Life was good for Mom for the next 35 years - none of her children or her husband were killed or maimed or became seriously ill. After my father died in 1996, Mom carried on by herself for another 13 years. But they were largely lonely years, even with 4 children and multiple grandchildren. She continued to be somewhat selfconscious of her German accent and so found it hard to make new acquaintances and form friendships. She missed her husband incredibly, as do all bereaved spouses. Mom worried in her later years that my father, a staunch Catholic, would be in a separate part of heaven, a part not accessible, she thought, to her as a non-Catholic. In the last year of her life she converted to Catholicism and this gave her much relief and contentment, now believing to a certainty that she would be re-united with her husband in the life that comes after death. It's almost like she knew what was coming because not long after converting, my mother contracted cancer and within a few short months she was gone - a seemingly inextinguishable life force snuffed out. My mother, like everybody else's mother of course, was always loving and kind and generous. She was also a woman of great resolve, determination, and energy. That may have been due to her heritage, or her natural temperament, or the circumstances of her life - but more likely, it was a combination of all three. She could run a pretty tight ship when she had to and with four kids, she had to most of the time. And at those times when push came to shove, Mom didn't always offer a choice - it wasn't even a question of her way or the highway - it was her way. Period. Within an hour of Mom's death there was a sudden summer storm thunder, lightning and rain - the rain was pelting down hard but not hard enough to obscure the blindingly bright flashes of lightning nor to muffle the startlingly loud clapping of thunder. My youngest brother almost smiled and commented "Well, Mom made it to heaven - that's her having a discussion about who's in charge." Happy Mother's Day, Mom - RIP. And Happy Mother's Day to Moms everywhere.

Letters to the Editor Happiness Catch-22: Wanting More Makes Us Unhappy From 2001 to 2004, I worked/lived in India. I saw firsthand heartbreaking poverty. My takeaway from my experience in India is that North Americans have no real problems, just 1st world problems. Our financial stress, feeling unsuccessful, constantly seeking fulfillment is caused by marketing propaganda's influences and overabundance. It's no secret that marketers and advertisers keep us wanting more and more. This manufactured insatiable appetite to consume has eroded our ability to have any gratitude for all we have compared to most of the world. Canadians' lack of gratitude for living a 1st world lifestyle is truly appalling! In 2018 almost half the world lived on less than $5.50 a day. According to the World Bank, 3.4 billion people struggle to meet basic needs. Western society, especially North America, measures happiness and success by comparing oneself with others. For the most part, how we feel about our income, car, and house are moulded by our family, friends, colleagues, neighbours' income, car, and house. It's a national pass time to worry about relative status, which is why much of our consumerism revolves around trying to "look rich.". Marketing propaganda has made us believe we're entitled to a certain lifestyle. If you're not living the lifestyle you're supposedly entitled to, we're a failure. Not long ago, when I'd see somebody wearing a $5,000 watch, for example, I'd look at my $200 watch and think, "Maybe I'm doing something wrong." Buying a Breitling® watch, an Audi S6 Sedan or a Lardini single-breasted blazer may make you feel happier. Like with my aforementioned watch example, it has a keeping-up-with-the-Joneses status effect. However, the happiness doesn't last long, since eventually "the Jones" will either buy what you bought, or something regarded as "better." This makes us want to buy more stuff to one-up "the Jones." Let's be honest; we all want to be "the Jones." When the latest iPhone comes out, the lineup at Apple stores are people who have a functioning iPhone in their pocket, wanting to be "the Jones." (FYI, we're on iPhone13, the first iPhone came out on June 29, 2007.) Moreover, we tend to compare ourselves to those who appear wealthier than us, an illusion easy to create, given the ease with which credit can be acquired today, coupled with social media. Thorstein Veblen, the 20th-century economist who coined "conspicuous consumption" and "invidious comparisons," highlighted how people use luxury goods to display their social status, which in 2022 social media amplifies. As early as 1899, Veblen observed that people lived on treadmills of wealth accumulation, incessantly competing with others but not increasing their own wellbeing. Sounds familiar?

Wanting, and therefore constantly seeking, recognition (READ: validation) is the biggest driver of human behaviour, which explains social media's addictive quality. (Social Media = "Look at me!") You giving a $2,000 cheque to your favourite charity receives no social applause. However, post a selfie of yourself wearing a $1,500 COBB leather jacket on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter—you'll receive likes, comments, and egostroking. You'll temporarily be happy, but once the euphoria wears off, you'll want to buy more recognition. When it comes to ever-changing fashion, marketing propaganda tells you that your clothes will give you the recognition you crave more than your character or actions. Unfortunately, our society has gotten to the point where we feel recognition, respect, and love are more likely to come from owning a 65-inch flat-screen TV or driving a Tesla Model S than from doing good deeds or just being a good person. As social animals, status is naturally important to us. We're anxious to stand out from the crowd—to tower over our peers, gain their respect, and "hopefully" their love, which we believe will make us happy and fulfilled. For hundreds of years, we've inherently known that consumption doesn't lead to happiness. Every religion and philosophical tradition evangelizes this concept. Karl Marx's most important insight was his theory of alienation, which he defined as the sense of estrangement from the self that comes from being part of a materialistic society, in which we are cogs in a vast market-based machine. You don't need to be religious (or a Marxist) to see how absurd some of the claims our hyper-consumerist society makes. We're promised happiness with the next pay raise, the next new gadget—even the next sip of soda. In his book The Happiness Fantasy, Carl Cederström, a Swedish business professor, argues that companies and advertisers have promised satisfaction. Instead, they have led people into a joyless production and consumption rat race. As a result, though the material comforts of life have undeniably increased for Canadians, these "things" don't give our life meaning. We give our life meaning when we: • give more than we take • help someone in distress • share • empathize • develop meaningful relationships we can count on • are a good son, daughter, or friend • serve others

New Child Care Spaces Coming To Saskatchewan Communities

I

n March the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan announced the addition of 1,202 new licensed not-for-profit child care facility spaces in 21 Saskatchewan communities to provide better access to high-quality, affordable, flexible and inclusive child care. These additional spaces are part of a shared goal to create 28,000 new child care spaces in the province by the end of March 2026. Today’s announcement follows the December 2021 expansion of 601 new spaces. The Canada-Saskatchewan CanadaWide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, signed in August 2021, provides a federal investment of nearly $1.1 billion over five years for child care in Saskatchewan.

With an average of 50 per cent child care fee reductions already announced in the province, the goal is to bring down average fees for regulated child care to $10-a-day by the end of March 2026. The communities that will benefit are Asquith, Bethune, Bredenbury, Grayson, Gull Lake, Hague, Humboldt, Kindersley, Lloydminster, Martensville, Milestone, Moose Jaw, Montmartre, Pilot Butte, Outlook, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Warman and Zenon Park. More than half of Canada’s provinces and territories, including Saskatchewan, have either announced child care fee reductions or have already achieved an average cost of $10-a-day or lower for regulated child care.

306 - 931 - 6996 You could easily interpret this article as a lamentation against modern life and capitalism. For the record, I'm a very public proponent of democratic capitalism with a modern welfare state. My attempt here is to appeal to everyone to remember that material prosperity has both benefits and costs. The costs come when we allow our hunger for the trappings of prosperity to blind us from the timeless sources of true human happiness: faith, family, friendship, and work in which we earn our respective definition of success and serving others. These have always been, and will always be, the things that deliver the happiness I see so many trying to obtain through their consumerism. Nick Kossovan, a self-described connoisseur of human psychology, writes about what's on his mind from Toronto. You can follow Nick on Twitter and Instagram @NKossovan.

ur club is happy to be doing more this year! We set up a display at Pike Lake Provincial Park for the Festival of Lights. It was fun getting together to set up the display. We decided to do non-competitive speeches this year and held those on April 24th at the town hall in Delisle. For fundraising this year, we did a Mom's Pantry order before Christmas and it was very successful. We would also like to thank Farm Credit Canada for a very generous grant of $500, that we received for help with our Achievement Day! That money will be very useful for making our Achievement Day special for all our members! Thank You Farm Credit Canada! Our Achievement Day will be held on June 5th, in Delisle at the Lodge Room. ighlights from Catherwood 4H Club, April edition. We had our meeting on April 10 and we talked about our Achievement Day and when it will all happen and along with that we talked about beef and sheep shows that are happening outside the 4H club. Some of the 4H members went to Saskatoon for the AGM and they had a good time and met some people who are new to town that are in charge of some things. Had a recap on how the presentations went and how everyone felt about them. All the kids said they were fun and it was a good time and less work than speeches. Discussed our upcoming fundraiser which is our Stars fundraiser, we are raffling off a quilt with all proceeds going to Stars on behalf of our beef leader who tragically passed away due to an accident in January. Please support the cause by purchasing a ticket through any of our Catherwood 4H club members or emailing ladyoftheflock@yahoo.ca ( Mel StevensLeader). Watch for our show date, come support your local 4H. Submitted by Dayne Stevens

Ottawa, ON – Kelly Block, Member of Parliament for Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek, released the following statement on Budget 2022 tabled by the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Finance. Yesterday, the NDP-Liberal government introduced its first budget following the signing of the confidence and supply” agreement between the two parties. Canadians are worse off today than they were six years ago. What they needed was a break. What they were looking for was a plan. A plan to deal with the cost-of-living crisis, one that would bolster our economic prosperity and competitiveness, and provide them with the hope that they can be better off than they were when the Liberals came to power. Instead, the NDP-Liberal government has doubled down on their uncontrolled spending and higher taxes. Budget 2022 is exactly what we feared. Inflation is at a 30 year high, yet this budget does nothing to address it. In fact, with a projected deficit of

$52.8 billion for the 2022-2023 fiscal year, it will contribute to continued inflation. Canada’s federal debt is now $1.12 trillion dollars. Over the past seven years, the Liberal government has hampered Saskatchewan’s growth by increasing regulations, increasing taxes, and scaring away investment. Saskatchewanians and all Canadians needed a budget that would address record high inflation and a skyrocketing cost of living that has led to higher grocery and gas prices and a growing housing affordability crisis. What we got instead was more of the same. With this high tax, high spend budget, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau decided to buy the NDP’s support so that he can continue to govern rather than earn the trust of the Canadian electorate. The price tag for this NDP support is billions more in federal debt. The impact of this added debt will be felt by current and future generations of Canadians even more as interest rates rise in the future. The NDP/Liberal government has failed constituents in Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek.”

moke alarms and CO2 alarms play a very important role in keeping you, your family and property safe in the event of a fire or Carbon Monoxide exposure. In this issue we will talk Smoke Alarms. Please take a few minutes and check that they are functioning properly. Smoke alarms are powered either by a 9 volt battery or hard wired into your buildings power supply. It is recommended to use a combination. Where should smoke alarms be located? • In hallways that lead to each bedroom. • On ceiling at the bottom of any staircase leading to upper floors. • On floors without bedrooms install near living areas such as dens, living and family rooms. • Mount high on walls or ceilings (remember smoke rises). Wall mounted alarms should be placed 10 to 30 cm down from ceiling and ceiling mounted should be 10 cm away from wall. Make sure it’s working! Press the button monthly to make sure it has power and it will go off when it detects smoke. You can also do a smoke test by blowing out a candle and letting smoke drift towards alarm. Alarm should sound and you can fan the smoke away to cancel. Until next time stay Safe and stay Healthy! Gardening Season is Finally Here !

May 2022

Essential Probiotic Soil Inoculant(EPSI) Developed in Saskatchewan, for Saskatchewan Soils from Pastures and Lawns to Golf Courses and Gardens EPSI is the culmination of an 8 year research project spearheaded by Byron Tenkink. It began as a microbiology masters project; Byron took the project on while completing his master’s degree at Simon Fraser University, BC. The focus of the project was to see how to offset soil degradation caused by chemical fertilizers. The science behind this process is fascinating, according to Byron. “Essentially, chemical fertilizers were developed with a focus on Chemistry, but they never took into account the absolute devastation wreaked on the microbes within the soil.” These myriad local microbes are responsible for forming complex relationships with plant roots, cycling nutrients within the soil, and ensuring the whole ecosystem can thrive at maximum efficiency. A great example of such microbes is Rhizobium, sold as a powder in garden centers, which is key to improving pulse crop yields; there are literally thousands more such types of helpful soil microbes, all of whom die en-masse when we over-apply chemicals. The project unfolded in two steps: the first involved a partnership with a team from Texas A&M, and a hydrology institute in Kansas alongside Byron’s team from BC. By pooling the data collected from these teams, it was possible to apply rigorous scientific techniques to identify characteristics of useful soil microbes. The second part of the process was to pare down that list to soil microbes found locally in Saskatchewan capable and tough enough to survive our uniquely harsh climate. “There are a shocking number of microbes we studied that simply do not survive winter here” says Byron. “Thankfully we had the tools to find local heroes, isolate them in a lab, and grow them up at a scale where they can do the most good”.

That final step, producing at scale, required a few breakthroughs, which came to the team around the 5th year of the project. Generally, work in soil inoculants and compost teas tend to produce a product which has a shelf-life similar to raw milk. However, by using composted plant matter, earthworm castings, and locally-sourced biochar in tandem with a fermentation step similar to how Kombucha is produced, it was possible to make a compost tea which was not only teeming with high-value soil microbes, but also able to be kept on a shelf for up to one year! Finally, by balancing biological, chemical, and physical properties, EPSI is not only incredibly effective, but is also completely non-toxic, and free of synthetic chemicals. That chemical-free quality has the added benefit of making EPSI incredibly easy to use, since there is no risk of burning, or over-applying. Dilution is convenient when it’s time to spray it on pastures, gardens and orchards, as well as estate lawns and golf courses, but in each case dilution is not necessary! Once the product had been perfected, Byron was eager to bring his new discovery to his local market in Saskatoon. Last year Byron’s father Maurice joined the team, bringing decades of experience working with horses and other livestock, as well as his own degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and UofA. As a third-generation Saskatchewan native, Byron was eager to keep the scope of his focus squarely around the city he was born in. “I’d say it’s been pretty amazing so far. My dad gets to apply his master’s degree in Agronomy, I get to apply mine in Microbiology, my dear wife Cassie keeps the office firing on all cylinders, and we get to work every day to regenerate our neighbors’ soils”. by Byron Tenkink

April 6, 2022 (Calgary, Alberta) – The Government of Canada announced another temporary change to the Advance Payments Program (APP) that provides additional support for western Canadian agricultural producers experiencing cash flow difficulties in the wake of record-high input prices and last year’s drought conditions. Today’s announcement unveils that producers are now eligible to receive the entirety of their advance upfront upon the approval of their application. In previous program years, crop and honey producers received 60 per cent of their requested advance upfront and the additional 40 per cent upon the submission of additional reporting that verified seeded acreage or production. This latest change to the APP program, combined with last week’s announcement of increased advance rates, allows producers to access substantial cash flow and use their increased purchasing power to help maximize profitability on commodities experiencing alltime high market prices. “The change announced today is welcomed by producers struggling with their cash flow this season,” says Alberta Wheat Commission chair Greg Sears. “The APP has a deep-rooted history in helping producers stay ahead of the curve, but we have seen that agriculture is susceptible to the flux of markets and global events. In these unprecedented times, changes to business risk management programs are necessary to help producers and industry weather the challenges.”

S

For producers that have already applied to FarmCash and received partial funds, the remainder of their advances will be issued within twenty-four hours of the APP announcement. “We are committed to helping producers improve their profitability, and we could not be more supportive of the announcement made by the Government of Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada,” said chief operating officer of FarmCash, Syeda Khurram. “FarmCash is proud to provide producers with a convenient and efficient cash advance option to overcome current and future challenges in the industry.” Under the administration of FarmCash, producers in Western Canada of over 50 agricultural commodities from cattle to canola can apply via an easy online application for a cash advance of up to $1 million and receive their first $100,000 interest free and the remainder at TD prime minus 0.75 per cent. The use of the program is not limited to the purchasing of inputs, but can also be used to mitigate risk in the growing season, make timely investments, or even improve farmland value. For more information and to apply for FarmCash visit FarmCashAdvance.com or speak with a dedicated account manager by calling 1-855-376-2274.

Gardiner Dam Spillway Bridge Rebuild Starting on May 2nd

tarting on May 2, and continuing to the end of September, WSP contractors will begin rehabilitation on the Gardiner Dam Spillway bridge. During construction traffic on the bridge will be restricted to a single lane and be controlled with traffic lights. The single lane will have a clear width of 3.7m (approx.12 feet). Width restriction will make it difficult to move agricultural equipment across the bridge. WSP is willing to accommodate equipment moves for local residents and ratepayers by moving the concrete

barriers on the bridge to increase the width temporarily to allow the equipment to pass. You must provide WSP sufficient time (AT LEAST 24 HOURS NOTICE) to work with the contractors to move the barriers and ensure that the equipment can pass safely. Please contact the on-site representative, Kaleab at 306-807-4026 to make your arrangements well in advance. You may also contact the R.M. of Fertile Valley, if Kaleab is unavailable, and they will put you in contact with an alternate.

This project is part of the Government of Saskatchewan’s investment in improving safety and efficiency on key highway corridors. The estimated cost of this project is $22.8 million.

From April to November you can expect minor delays and disruptions along Highway 45. Traffic through the work zone will be one-way and will be at a reduced speed of 60 km/h. Flaggers will be present and traffic may be stopped for no longer than 20 minutes. Traffic information on the project will be available on the Highway Hotline http://hotline.gov.sk.ca/map.html
