New Perdue Arena Has Grand Opening

he community of Perdue celebrated the long awaited Grand Opening of their new arena on February 23rd. The day began with an Initiation hockey game before the crowd gathered in the lobby at 1pm. Mayor Dave Miller made a brief speech after which all of the Perdue hockey kids held a lengthy ribbon which was cut to officially open the new arena. This was followed by a cake cutting and a Senior Pirate alumni game. A supper and social at the Rec Complex capped off the long road back since the old rink burnt down in 2015. Through the efforts of volunteers the $1.8 million arena is now ready for generations to come.

Delisle Student Receives $5,000 Scholarship

T

he Horatio Alger Association of Canada provides $1.2 million annually in need-based scholarship support for deserving students in all Canadian provinces and territories.

One hundred and sixty $5,000 Canadian Scholarships are funded through the generosity of the Members of the Canadian Association and applicants must meet the following criteria: - Be graduating high school (or be in the final year of CEGEP) with plans to enter university in the fall of 2019 - Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university - Demonstrate critical financial need ($65,000 or less annual net income per family is required) - Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities - Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity - Maintain a minimum grade percentage of 65 - Attend high school (or CEGEP) and reside in Canada - Be Canadian citizens

One of this year’s recipients of a Canadian Scholarship is a Delisle Composite School student, Myles Wright. Myles is in grade 12 and heard about the Horatio Alger scholarship from his mom who saw a poster at Hanley school on October 20th. He had only a week notice to submit an application, but made the deadline. He was surprised when in February he heard he won $5000 ($1000 x 5 years). He is one of six from Saskatchewan that were accepted for this award. He is glad to receive the award, and plans to graduate high school and continue his education at the U of S to complete a degree in Electrical Engineering. He hopes to get more scholarships to help pay the $45 000 for his post-secondary education. Myles plays clarinet and saxophone in the Prairie Spirit West Concert Band and Jazz Band and is a member of the Saskatoon Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Warman Community Band and the Diamond Jazz Band. He is also a senior member of the Vanscoy Multiple 4-H club where he has been a member for the past 12 years.
