orden Bridge Campground is a lovely natural park setting on the North Saskatchewan River bank with a very scenic view of all three Borden Traffic Bridges as well as the CP Rail Bridge.

Its setting is of great historic significance to Saskatchewan's history, and marks the place where the infamous stern wheeler, The Northcote, used to stop to refuel for its travels on the North Saskatchewan River during the period of fur trading and passenger transport in the latter part of the 1800s. There are two cairns on the riverbank. One commemorates the opening of the Borden Traffic Bridge in 1985, and the other commemorates the Steamboats that traveled this river. It is also where the CP ferry operated from 1902 to 1936.

The Borden Bridge Campground had been closed for a number of years and was recently re-opened by a local family in 2018. With years of work, the campground now offers powered (and non-powered) sites, flushable toilets, coin-operated showers, walking trails and the best view in the community.

The campground is close to many local amenities, including a spray park and museum in Langham, a golf course and museum in Borden, several antique shops and an outdoor swimming pool in Radisson.

The campground is an excellent spot for many activities, such as wedding parties, athletic events, family or school reunions, fishing, biking and hiking.

Marathon The dental hygienist lady was telling me that her husband had run a marathon race the previous weekend and I asked her if she also ran marathons. "Absolutely no chance," she scoffed but did admit that she travelled with her husband when he raced in other cities - "to provide moral support", she said.

And to provide vocal encouragement from the sidelines - "Hurry up, it's hot out here."

Marathon is a city in Greece famous for lending its name to a foot race, a foot race over a distance of about 26 miles. According to legend, in the year 490 BC a warrior ran the 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to warn his fellow countrymen that they were about to be attacked by an invading army. He managed to blurt out his message, "Gird your loins, fellas, the bad guys are coming" (maybe not a literal translation) before dropping down dead from the exertion of his effort.

To give you a concrete idea of how far that warrior ran, a roughly equivalent distance would be running from Saskatoon City Hall to Delisle or running from Saskatoon City Hall to Dundurn. Alternatively, if you were worried about running that distance and having history repeat itself, you could consider the possible convenience of running from Saskatoon City Hall to the Hochstadt Cemetery south of Hague.

The NFL scout was in the announcers' gallery watching these hopefuls run the 100-yard dash. He kept looking back and forth between the runners and his stop-watch. Looking confused and bewildered, he asked, "They know it's a race, right?")

As popular as it is, the Boston Marathon doesn't qualify as a race sanctioned for world records - its course is too varied in terrain and elevation. The London, England Marathon, however, does qualify - it held its annual Marathon in April of this year, 2026.

It was on this race that a young man from Uganda, Jacob Kiplimo, had his sights set. He was one of a number of fellow Africans registered for the race.

Jacob started the race confidently, thinking he had a good chance of winning it. He had come in second in the previous year's (2025) London Marathon and had followed that up by winning the Chicago Marathon later on in the year, with an improved time. He wanted to win, of course, but was also hopeful of bringing glory to his country by setting a world record winning time - Uganda had never had a runner with a world record Marathon finish.

That legendary run, from Marathon to Athens, fostered the idea of a 26-mile running race for the inaugural Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece in 1896. The race was to be called a Marathon and was proposed as a way of encouraging public engagement in and support for the Olympic Games, calling on Greek nationalist pride.

Jacob knew he had some very stiff competition, primarily from Sabastian Sawe, a runner from Kenya. Kenyan runners had held the world record time, continually improving it, for the last 14 years, since 2011. Another tough competitor was going to be a runner from Ethiopia, a young man by the name of Yomif Kejelcha. Ethiopian runners had held the world title for a couple of years before the Kenyan reign so Yomif couldn't be discounted. But it was really Sabastian, his Kenyan rival, that Jacob knew he had to beat.

The first Olympic Marathon race had 18 men registered to run but only 9 finished. And the third-place finisher was disqualified because he got a ride for part of the way thus becoming the founding member of the Olympic "Idiocy Has No Bounds" Club. Which, in a shake-your-head-sad kind of way, has not been under-populated with members.

When Jacob crossed the finish line his time flashed on the clock by the track and he was elated - he had beaten the world record. His elation however was tempered by the fact that the Ethiopian runner, Yomif, had finished ahead of him, not only breaking the world record but also breaking the iconic 'Holy Grail' two-hour barrier.

The idea of a Marathon race, cheating disgrace aside, immediately caught the public's attention and imagination and became a fixture of the Olympic Games. It was very quickly copied as an annual stand-alone event, distinct from the Olympic Games, by big cities all around the world.

Yomif himself was doubly thrilled, doubly elated - it was his first ever official marathon race and he had broken the world record and he had broken the two-hour barrier as well. Like Jacob, though, his excitement was less than it would have been if he had been the first to cross the finish line and not the second.

Boston, USA was the first of these, staging the event the very next year in 1897 and is the longest running (so to speak) annual marathon event. The Boston Marathon in the years since has become so popular that entrants are limited to runners who can finish the race within a specified period of time. ”This is not a jogging race,” warned the 1970 Boston Marathon rules.

And with so many Marathon races, so much competition, the finishing times have steadily decreased over the years. The times have decreased so remarkably that the guy who won that first Olympic Marathon in 1896 wouldn't qualify to run in the current Boston Marathon - he would be too slow.

The winning time in the 1896 Olympics was 2 hours, 58 minutes and 50 seconds; now a runner needs to be able to run the Boston Marathon in less than 2 hour, 55 minutes just to enter the race, never mind to win it. And as winning times have kept decreasing, getting closer and closer to the two-hour mark, running the Marathon in less than 2 hours has become the 'Holy Grail' of elite level runners.

(Watching these elite athletes run, it is hard to appreciate how quickly they are moving, how fast they are running. For a true appreciation, you really need to pluck some random guy from the bleachers and put him in the race for comparison. As an example, back in the '70's one of the NFL teams, in an effort to show appreciation for their fans and to encourage game attendance, organized a try-out day for the local citizenry which of course included armchair quarterbacks, weekend warriors and other, general all-purpose wannabees.

Because in front of him was that Kenyan guy, Sabastian, who crossed the finish line, breaking the world record, breaking the two-hour barrier, and most importantly, breaking the finishing line tape to come in first.

The first 3 finishers, all 3 of them, broke the world record and two of the three broke the 2-hour 'Holy Grail' finishing time - Sabastian with a winning time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds.

Incredible. What a race. What a finish. Wow. Wow. Wow. But there is only one world record, only one first 'Holy Grail' achiever, and only one winner and that was Sabastian Sawe.

When Sabastian returned to his home in Nairobi, Kenya, huge crowds were waiting to greet him. At the ceremony celebrating his achievement, the Kenyan President, William Ruto, presented Sabastian with a brand-new car complete with its own special, custom, vehicle license plate - 1:59:30 - his official record- breaking time.

It can be pretty much guaranteed that Sabastian, with that license plate, will never, ever receive a traffic ticket - not in Kenya, anyway. In Ethiopia or Uganda, though, even parked, he could well be arrested for speeding.

Robin’s Nest Cafe Celebrates 30 Years !

obin & Quinten Odnokon moved to Vanscoy in 1996 where, after getting a tip from a good friend in the food wholesale business, they opened Robin’s Nest Cafe on June 6th. Robin, originally from Outlook, and Quinten, from Saskatoon, have since been operating the successful business for 30 years.

Over-thinking by Tardij 1. Did you realize that if you sit on the toilet at 11:59pm and the clock strikes midnight, it’s the same sh*t, different day ?

2. The word FAT just looks like someone took a bite out of the first letter of the word EAT 3. If a liar tells you they’re lying, are they lying or telling you the truth ?

4. If your shirt isn’t tucked into your pants your pants are tucked into your shirt.

5. If the devil punishes bad people, doesn’t that make him good ?

6. Light bulbs were such a good idea that they became the symbol for a good idea.

7. If condoms are made on an automated assembly line, that means robots are already working to prevent human reproduction.

8. Lawyers hope you get sued, doctors hope you get sick, and mechanics hope you have car trouble. The only person wishing you success is a thief.

9. Both pairs of cheeks on our bodies have a big hole between them.

10. Christmas is the only time of year you can eat snacks out of an unwashed sock on the wall and not be judged for it.

During those years they have employed well over 100 local residents, mostly teenagers gaining their first work experience in a caring and responsible environment while they continued with their eduction. Some have gone on to successful careers in the food service, and almost all of them have maintained a friendship with them to this day.

They maintain an active presence in the community, supporting many local community organizations and events, and Robin is currently serving as Mayor of Vanscoy.

“Supporting our community has always been very important to us” says Quinten, “and we have found that in the end it all comes back to us 10 fold. Be sure to stop in and join us in our celebration through the month of July”.

TOWN OF DELISLE

ouncil held a regular meeting on May 14th at 7pm during which the following items were addressed:

· Council acknowledged the 2025 Audited Financial Statements · Council acknowledged the 2026 Education Property Tax Rates · Council approved the 2026-2027 Kitchen Lease Contract · Council approved a quote from Hillbillie Painting to paint the lobby of the Delisle AGT Centennial Arena in the amount of $10,058.34 (plus GST). · Council approved a goodwill contribution covering 50% of the repair costs, to a maximum of $1,998 (including GST), in relation to damage associated with a burst water service connection at the property legally described as Lot 2, Block 34, Plan 80S22827.

This contribution was made without any admission of liability. · Council approved a 10% annual charge to be billed to all user groups leasing or utilizing Town of Delisle land or assets, based on the Town’s overall general liability insurance costs, intended to offset increased liability exposure to the Town arising from third-party use. The 10% charge shall be applied as an administrative fee within applicable lease agreements. This includes adding the Delisle Curling Club to the list of applicable payees. · Council approved the CAO to transfer any public land which is sold for the price set by Council. · Council agreed to price Lots 6,7 and 8 of Block 36 Plan 102234732 on the northern portion of Parcel A to $55,000 per lot plus applicable fees and taxes. · Bylaw 7-2026, being a bylaw to amend Bylaw 32013, was read a second time.

VILLAGE OF VANSCOY

he Village of Vanscoy had contractors here this week flushing all the sewer lines in the Village. There were items found in the main lines that ended up in the lift station – a marker, a ball and plastic toys, to name a few.

Parents, please ensure your children are not flushing these kinds of things down the sewer lines.

Clogs will occur and you, as the homeowner will be responsible for clearing the blockages.

Street patching and gravelling will begin this month after street cleaning is complete.

The Asquith landfill will be open for branches, leaves, untreated wood and other clean yard waste every second Saturday from 9a.m. to 3p.m. beginning May 2nd. A map to the landfill can be found on our website.

MP Report The Prime Minister Must Protect Property Rights Last August’s BC Supreme Court decision in Cowichan Tribes v Canada has sent shockwaves throughout British Columbia and across the country. With potentially massive consequences for property owners, businesses and investment, Ottawa cannot continue to sit idly by.

That is why Conservatives have introduced a motion in the House of Commons demanding that the government put private property first and take meaningful steps to protect Canadians’ rights.

In September of 2025, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre wrote to Justice Minister Sean Fraser demanding the Liberal government stand up for property rights and overturn the decision.

Following the similarly worrying Musqueam Rights Recognition Agreement, Conservatives demanded that the government return to arguing that private property has priority over all other forms of title.

This argument, also called “extinguishment,” was rejected by the Liberals through Litigation Guideline #14 of the Attorney General of Canada's Directive on Civil Litigation Involving Indigenous Peoples, which discourages government lawyers from using all available arguments to defend private property.

When homes and property are at stake, Canadians deserve action from our elected officials. That’s why our Conservative motion calls on them to: Put private property first in the Cowichan case, with priority over all other title, while replacing Litigation Guideline #14 that prevents their lawyers from doing so; Enshrine explicit property protection in all future agreements with First Nations so that fee simple property rights are enshrined; Publish a plan within 30 days to protect the property rights for Canadians affected by the Cowichan decision and Musqueam agreement; and Appoint a special committee to study all legal, constitutional and political steps that can be taken to protect private property rights in Canada.

If the Liberal Prime Minister, and the government he leads, wants Canadians to trust that the results will match the rhetoric, then he should wholeheartedly support this motion.

Conservatives call on MPs from all parties to stand on the right side of history in defence of Canadians homes and businesses, and take steps that advance meaningful and lasting reconciliation.

Despite claiming to believe that property rights are “fundamental”, neither Prime Minister Mark Carney nor his Attorney General have taken any steps to change the government’s actual position in litigation.

unday May 3rd was the Mason’s supper and as per usual they do NOT disappoint. Fabulous meal, thank you to all of the volunteers who work hard to put this together. It is amazing to me to see so many people in our community gather together to share a meal and maybe a bit of gossip ?

Well, the season to plant is upon us, I am learning that some people are early planters and some people have a more relaxed attitude and plant their gardens in June. I have always been of the mind that the May long weekend was the time to plant, ingrained from my grandparents, I suspect. But let me tell you, I sure did not plant in the sleet and rain we received on the long weekend. Instead, my granddaughter and I braved it out by going camping at Eagle Creek. We spent the majority of time inside the camper playing a lot of cards and Charades. Yes, even two people can laugh and snort during a game of Charades.

Our garden is now planted but I have yet to get my flowers. I did see my first hummingbird on Monday morning while having a cup of coffee out on my patio. I was very excited to see and welcome them back even if they are only here for a short time. It is always an exciting time to anticipate the return of the little creatures. They are so incredibly tiny yet fly a journey of thousands of miles in a 2-3 week period. Flying time can be up to 20 hours per day.

They do this every year and their life span is between 3-5 years. They are beautiful amazing creatures. A little side note, if you come by my home and you see me talking away, I like to have conversations with my trees and flowers while I am out in my yard, everyone does that RIGHT ?

Our next bingo is this Friday May 29th as previously mentioned. We wonder will the jackpot go?

Our Forever in Motion fitness classes are starting the wind down. Our final class will be on Tuesday June 23rd, immediately after we will have a wind down lunch at the Asquith Bar & Grill. Please join us! We hope you all come back in September, the date has yet to be determined. I would like to thank Trudy Westad and Diane Haughren for a great first year.

I would like to take this time to thank our previous Vice President Carrie Latta, who resigned her position with the BLRA at the end of March. We were hoping that she would have a change of heart and stay on the board but we couldn’t convince her, (Sad emoji face) Carrie has been on our board since 2013 so 23 years and was the VP for (according to Carrie “Too long, don’t remember) She has been an incredible leader for us young’uns coming up. I think we are allowed to still ask her questions if we need to, right Carrie? We are happy to announce that she has agreed to remain the rental contact for our centre, so anyone requiring rental of the hall please contact Carrie.

As previously mentioned all events are welcome, if you require a rental of our hall for a meeting, an art/painting class, a dance class, a singing class, a cooking class, a craft class, is there an instructor out there that teaches line dancing, a book club, wedding shower, baby shower, funeral, memorial service, a murder mystery, shuffle board, Karaoke night, do you want to have a movie night, we also have a ping pong table that can be used, think outside the box and reach out to Carrie Latta.

Our summer hours for billiards continue as always, they are every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:00pm. Ping Pong can also be played on Wednesdays at 1:00pm, if you have a hankering to play Ping Pong come on down. Canasta (Hand & Foot) is every Monday and Friday at 1:00pm. All activities take place at the Asquith Seniors Centre. (Better Life Recreation Centre). Please come and check us out. Whoever is around during the summer drop by.

Our final senior meeting for the season is on Monday June 1st at the centre; anyone is welcome please come check it and us out. There are no meetings during July and August.

2026 Memberships have increased to 49 from 34 last year. We want to welcome all of our new members and are thankful that our previous members took the plunge again. With this membership you join a community of people who have like minded interests, and remember we can always use new ideas and energy for our club.

We have a fundraising committee that meets 2-3 times per year for an hour. It does not take a lot of time out of your busy lives but the results can be pretty YUMMY. Our goal is to come up with a meal that makes peoples mouths water, so we can earn some money to continue to keep our centre running.

We would welcome any new members that would like to join with their new and exciting ideas. Take some time to think about it then reach out.

Some history of Asquith for people who would like to know. Asquith was founded in the early 1900’s and named after a former British Prime Minister H.H. Asquith. The community grew around the homesteads of Ontario pioneers Andrew & Jennet Mather. It was originally settled in 1902 and was incorporated as a village in 1907. It was a railway and agricultural hub, today Asquith serves as a quiet commuter town. Our home was built by the Mathers in 1908 and was one of the first homes in Asquith.

The Platinum Martyr: Marilyn Monroe's 100th Birthday, Hollywood's Most Exquisite Casualty Marilyn Monroe, whose 100th birthday falls on June 1, remains the Dream Factory's most exquisite casualty. Her death became a global obsession that endures today. Marilyn was a shimmering speed-freak of fame who hit the wall at 200 miles per hour because she was the only one in Hollywood who truly felt the wind.

Toasting a birthday for a woman who hasn't drawn a breath since the Kennedy administration is a polite fiction. We aren't celebrating a life; we're examining a martyrdom. Marilyn's life was a slow-motion Technicolor execution, with the price of admission nothing less than Marilyn herself, a creature of pure surface who was swallowed whole by the very machinery that polished her.

The quintessential Hollywood tragedy didn't arrive softly. At approximately 3:30 AM on August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe's psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, broke her bedroom window at 12305 5th Helena Drive in the Los Angeles residential neighbourhood of Brentwood to find Marilyn lying face down on her bed, nude, covered by a sheet and clutching a telephone receiver. Her nightstand was cluttered with empty amber pill bottles, a testament to Marilyn's prescription-fueled survival strategy.

Fast-forward 63 years, and we still talk about "Marilyn" like she's in the next room, or off-set, fixing her hair in her trailer. That was the thing about Marilyn, she had this way of making everyone feel like they were in on a secret with her, even though the world was really just looking at a version of her that they'd decided was theirs to keep.

Marilyn's transformation into the ultimate sex symbol wasn't an accident of nature; it was a calculated survival strategy. Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, she began as a factory worker. She understood the grind and the power of leverage.

When the camera found her, she recognized that "Norma Jeane" was a low-yield asset destined for poverty, while "Marilyn" was blue-chip stock. "Marilyn Monroe" didn't just happen; Norma Jeane herself created "Marilyn Monroe."

"She was a master of a certain kind of cinematic alchemy," director Billy Wilder observed, witnessing her supernatural relationship with the lens. "I have never met anyone who was as much a ‘natural’ as she was. She had no technique, but she had a kind of luminous quality that the camera loved. You could have a room full of the most beautiful women in the world, and if Marilyn walked in, the lights would dim everywhere else. She didn't just influence the movies; she changed the way we had to light them, shoot them, and think about them."

Marilyn studied the masters—Dietrich, Harlow, Garbo—and reverse-engineered their magnetism. The breathy voice, the calculated walk, and the platinum hair were the technical specifications of a brand designed to dominate a specific market niche. Marilyn was very beautiful, and she had a way of looking at the camera that made you believe she was yours, which was a lie, but it was a good lie while it lasted.

Hollywood is a tough environment for beauty because its people are unkind and value only what money can buy. It does not nurture its own talent, and Marilyn was the first to reveal the price of that. She attempted to be more than the studio expected, challenging the executives for years. However, a world based on illusion is the worst place to find authenticity. In the end, the Dream Factory broke her.

Having grown up in neglectful foster homes, Marilyn had no institutional protection. She saw that the "girl next door" was easily replaced, but a Goddess was an institution. By leaning into a hyper-sexualized image, she built a brand too big to ignore and too valuable to be discarded by studio bosses. She was a brilliant strategist trapped in a "bombshell" caricature, much of it of her own making. She weaponized the audience's gaze to gain leverage over front-office executives.

But there's a brutal return on investment when you barter your psyche for your dream. The collective adoration of millions served as a toxic compensation for a childhood defined by neglect. The tragedy, of course, was that while the "Marilyn Monroe" brand was incredibly profitable, Marilyn herself was being liquidated to pay the dividends.

Long before the first social media platform existed, Marilyn mastered curated intimacy. She knew that "leaking" seemingly private, candid moments created a parasocial bond that felt more authentic to fans than a polished film role.

Today's digital creator economy mirrors this manufacturing of intimacy, balancing high-glamour aesthetics with strategic glimpses of personal struggle. Like today's creators, Monroe suffered from image-identity dissociation. When the product becomes extremely profitable, the person inside is eclipsed, leading to burnout and radical isolation.

Marilyn wasn't just a victim, though; she was a combatant. Her relationship with feminism, as it was in the 40s and 50s, is a study in the transition from objectification to agency. For decades, patriarchal history cast her as a casualty.

Today, Marilyn Monroe is cited as an early pioneer of professional self-determination. Marilyn challenged the studio system. She knew she was a high-level operator trapped in a mid-level contract. By 1955, she realized 20th Century Fox was raking in millions from her image while paying her like a replaceable commodity.

In a radical act of rebellion, she walked away to form Marilyn Monroe Productions, becoming only the second woman in Hollywood history to do so after Mary Pickford. She wanted intellectual property control. She didn't want to be a contract player; she wanted a seat at the table where she could dictate the terms of her own existence. She wanted to be the Chairman of the Board, selecting her own scripts, directors, and cinematographers. Real power in Hollywood isn't in front of the lens—it's in the hands of whoever owns the negatives.

Marilyn wanted to be Truman Capote's Holly Golightly, a role she fought for, which ultimately went to Audrey Hepburn, because it required nuance rather than just high-definition curves. Her relocation to New York City to study with the “high priest" of Method acting, Lee Strasberg, at the Actors Studio was a strategic move to shed the "dumb blonde" image and pivot to a serious actress.

She wanted to negotiate her power in a world that only wanted her to be a commodity.

As her contemporary Elizabeth Taylor later reflected: "Marilyn was the first one to truly show us the cost of the 'shimmer.' She was a pioneer in a way people don't like to admit—one of the first to stand up and say, 'I am not just a piece of property.' Every woman in this town who has ever fought for her own production company or for the right to be seen as a human being instead of a commodity owes a debt to her. She didn't just influence Hollywood; she warned us about it."

But the market demand for the "Platinum Martyr" was too high, leading to the liquidation of the person behind the brand. The industry's relentless commodification created a fatal disconnect between the manufactured bombshell and the vulnerable woman beneath. She achieved the neglected child's ultimate dream—to be seen by everyone—only to realize that when everyone is looking at the mask, no one sees the person.

If life denied her bodily autonomy, her death proved that the grave offers no sanctuary from exploitation. The post-mortem treatment of Marilyn's body is a horrifying postscript to Hollywood's hunger. The moment the news broke, paparazzi swarmed her home. Police photographs of her corpse were leaked. At the morgue, a photographer bribed an attendant with a bottle of whiskey to snap a photo of her unembalmed, freshly autopsied body.

Even in the funeral home, she was subjected to the beauty standards of the male gaze. Mortician Allan Abbott later capitalized on her corpse in his memoir, Pardon My Hearse: A Colorful Portrait of Where the Funeral and Entertainment Industries Met in Hollywood, callously remarking that she looked like an "average, aging woman" who hadn't shaved her legs in a week. When her body was prepared for viewing, the autopsy incisions had altered her chest. A mortuary employee stuffed her bra with cotton wool, stepped back, and exclaimed, "Now that looks like Marilyn Monroe!"

The sexualization of her physique was deemed acceptable even as she lay in a coffin. Her faux breasts and hair, removed by the embalmer, were later auctioned to the highest bidder.

This systemic violation followed her into the earth. Richard Poncher, a man obsessed with her image, bought the crypt directly above hers and demanded to be buried face down so he could spend eternity lying on top of her. Hugh Hefner, the mogul who launched his empire by publishing nude photos of her without her consent or compensation in the 1950s, bought the plot next to hers. Even today, tourists visit her grave and leave bright pink lipstick marks on the stone.

It's a grotesque irony for a woman who spent her life fighting to escape the caricature of a brainless, lipstick-wearing bombshell.

A century after her birth, Marilyn Monroe remains the ultimate blueprint for the modern celebrity. Socially, she bridged the gap between 1950s conservatism and the looming sexual revolution, redefining femininity as both a source of power and a public commodity. Yet her life stands as a stark warning about the price of chasing "the dream."

Marilyn's legacy isn't a fairytale; it's a cautionary tale about the price of chasing fame to fill an emotional void, which, in the end, becomes the skin you find yourself in. Our ongoing fascination with Marilyn stems from how we relate to her ache of being seen yet never truly heard or known. On Marilyn's centennial birthday, let's skip the worship of the "Platinum Martyr" and remember the woman who deserved to grow old, to have a messy kitchen and a quiet life, and to finally be the only one who got to decide who she really was.
