Down the Road Birds

Eagle-1 chased the sea gull who swooped down low over the water, and being more agile, made a sharp turn upwards and left Eagle-1 behind. But Eagle-2 had remained high in the air and was waiting for it, forcing the sea gull to again sweep down low and make a sharp upward turn to escape only to find that now Eagle-1 was waiting for it and chased it down again.

I saw a birdie in the sky, It dropped a poop right in my eye, I'm a big boy, I didn't cry, But gosh I'm glad cows can't fly.

There’s some truth in that bit of childish folk wisdom, namely that cows can't fly - but most of us probably knew that already.

There is also a whole lot of misdirection - that is, that birds, when it comes to poop, aren’t as dangerous as cows. Not true: there are only about 1.5 billion cows in the world but about 85 billion birds - that's billion with a b - about 60 times more birds than cows which ups the nuisance factor of birds considerably. Especially when you consider that cows only poop out in the field or in a barn but birds dump all over the place.

Most everybody knows the damage bird poop can cause - Canada geese in particular ruin lawns, playgrounds, parks - Canada geese poop up to several times per hour putting out about 2 pounds a day.

But in Canada it is illegal to kick geese and you are not allowed to throw rocks at sea gulls or pigeons. So some jurisdictions try different methods of reducing the bird population and thus, the poop factor. In Toronto, for example, the municipal government embarked on a program to limit its pigeon population by putting out bird seed laced with contraceptives to render them infertile thus inhibiting their procreation.

This idea of using contraceptives to inhibit population growth has long had an attractive appeal to well-intentioned but ineffectual groups. In Ontario, back in the 70's, there was a ban on shooting wolves which resulted in an increase in the wolf population and a corresponding increase in the loss of sheep stock. The local sheep farmers complained and the provincial department responsible came up with a plan to put contraceptives into wolf-bait to curtail the growth in the wolf population and thus reduce the predation. Government officials were delegated to hold a town hall meeting in the area to inform the sheep farmers of the birth-control plan. The young lady leading the group of officials had barely started her presentation when an irate and disgruntled farmer stood up and complained: "Lady, the wolves aren't f**king our sheep, they're eating them."

On the west coast sea gulls are a big problem - they poop whenever and wherever while on the ground, while flying - even, for example, dropping their detritus on a lawabiding, tax paying citizen who was innocently admiring the view while on the deck of a BC ferry.

It was with interest then, that this particular citizen watched as a herd of the flying rats harassed a pair of eagles flying over the harbour. The eagles were making a stoic attempt to ignore the little buggers and fly to a different neighbourhood but the sea gulls persisted in harassing and annoying them. And of course, like the bird brains they are, the sea gulls pushed too far and crossed the line. The eagles lost their cool and took retaliatory action - they singled out one of the sea gulls and double-teamed it.

After a few rounds of this, the sea gull, perhaps tired, mis-calculated its upward turn and got grabbed. Both Eagle-1 and the sea gull hit the water with a splash, the sea gull firmly in the eagle's talons. Eagle-2 flew off to the nearest rocky beach and stood guard while Eagle-1 swam to the shore, using it's wings as oars and still grasping the sea gull.

Once on the beach there was a flurry of white sea gull feathers. Not a pleasant way to go, of course, and I sort of felt bad for the sea gull, but considering the condition of my jacket (in the landfill) I didn't feel all that bad.

Another bird here on the coast that causes a lot of poop damage is the heron. A heron looks like a crane but you can tell the difference by the way they fly - the crane flies with its long neck extended like a swan or a goose; a heron, however, flies with its neck curled up against its chest.

And herons, like sea gulls, poop while flying. One of them flew over the balcony of our house and dropped it's load on a perfect trajectory, hitting the leading edge of the glasstopped patio table, the entire content then shot-gunning across the surface of the table, completely covering it before continuing on to splatter the glass railing as well. I was disgusted. It could have been worse, of course - just the day before we had been having lunch there - there had been food on the table, plates and cutlery and drinks on it, people sitting around it. But biological-weapon bomb dodged or not, I was still disgusted.

So I was somewhat amused when I read an article about a local heron who, umm, stepped in it, so to speak. The heron had been standing in the shallow water along a rocky shore, hunting, waiting for a fish it could spear with its long beak. It stepped between a couple of rocks and got its foot stuck, couldn't pull it out from between the rocks.

That was because an oyster had glommed on to one of the heron's toes and wouldn't let go. Nor when the heron tried to pull its foot up, would the oyster fit between the rocks.

The heron was stuck. A couple of locals (who probably didn't have a patio table) noticed the heron's predicament and it was soon rescued - the rocks were moved and the foot, oyster still attached, pulled out. The heron was given a mild sedative and, with the oyster, taken to a vet. There, because the oyster still refused to let go, it was given a sedative as well so that it would relax its grip and release the toe. The heron was then taken to another vet for specialty surgery to have its toe amputated - it would remain in recovery (and perhaps physio?) for a few days before being released into the wild again. (But shucks to say, no word on the oyster.)

Just as I did for the sea gull, I felt some sympathy for the heron but considering what it did to my patio table, not so very much.

Karma bites - and so do oysters.

TOWN OF ASQUITH

he Town of Asquith held its regular council meeting on June 8th, 2026. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8th, 2026, at 6:15 p.m.

The 2026 budget was adopted. The mill rate was not changed, and Council authorized the levy of 2026 property taxes.

Join us for a Canada Day Celebration on July 1st featuring free breakfast and lunch, bouncy castles, lawn games, face painting, and fireworks.

A special thank you goes to AH Bar & Grill and SoSo Beverage Co. for providing the meals, and to the Government of Canada for funding through the Celebrate Canada Grant.

TOWN OF DELISLE

ouncil held a regular meeting on June 11th, 2026 during which the following items were addressed: - Council awarded the 2026 High School Grad Bursary to Nikia Schlosser upon proof of enrollment into post secondary schooling - Council approved new cemetery fees (all exclude GST): Standard Plot = $500 Cremation Plot = $150 Columbarium Niche = $1700 - Council approved new proposed tax abatement incentives for new builds and upgrades and directed administration to prepare the necessary bylaw - Council directed administration to redraft lease agreements for all organizations utilizing town assets to require them to provide annual proof of insurance coverage, including general liability up to $2,000,000 as well as confirmation that the Town of Delisle has been listed as an additional insured - Council agreed to initiate fees for the Delisle Playschool’s use of the hall at a rate of $4 per child for the months that the school is in session and also agreed to provide the hall to the Delisle Playschool for the annual Christmas concert, gratuitously.

- Council agreed to refund Delisle Minor Baseball $40 for their use of the concession for a recent tournament.

After securing this unelected majority, the Carney Liberals tightened control of Parliamentary committees to avoid accountability and prioritized passing divisive legislation, such as Bill C-9. Despite the objections of hundreds of thousands of Canadians, C-9 was passed in the House of Commons and the Senate last Wednesday.

Additionally, the Liberal government rammed Bill C-22 through the House of Commons using programming and time allocation motions. Even though Bill C-22 has significant implications for the privacy rights of Canadians, it passed second reading in the House of Commons with limited debate and limited ability for Conservative members to propose amendments in committee.

The implications of Bill C-22 are very concerning.

This bill would give the Liberal government sweeping powers to monitor the online activity of Canadians, with very little oversight.

While the Liberal government has prioritized passing such divisive legislation, I had the privilege of introducing a common-sense and unifying Private Members Bill (C-255), which would better protect places of worship in Canada.

It is a privilege to serve as your Member of Parliament. I, along with my colleagues, will continue to fight for Canada when the House sits once more in the fall. We will fight to hold the Liberals accountable and we will continue to fight for Canadians to afford food, homes, and fuel.

Conservatives will continue to lead that fight every day and in every way in Parliament, across the country, and in the next election, when Canadians reclaim the country we know and love.

An Open Letter to the Class of 2026

C

onsider the air you're breathing right now as the last bit of subsidized oxygen you'll ever get.

Prior to graduating, you rode academia's conveyor belt of manufactured ‘participation’ progress, a systemic conveyor belt designed to move you forward as long as you didn't jump off. Now, the belt has stopped. You are standing at the edge of a vast, churning ocean of indifference. Congratulations, you're finally looking at the Real World.

Most people treat the phrase ‘Real World’ as a cliché because they're terrified of its actual definition: a high-stakes playing field that doesn't care about your potential. It doesn't respond to excuses or wishful thinking. The world is fueled by results and therefore responds only to movement. You're either creating value, or you're just taking up space.

English writer and philosopher Paul Kingsnorth points out in his book Against The Machine that we are willingly trading our humanity for convenience.

Consider how we voice our concerns, as you may have, about ‘dehumanization’ while hypocritically using AI to write our resumes, cover letters, documents, reports, emails, and presentations. You likely used AI to assist you with your last assignments.

Sadly, we're using the most powerful tool ever created to dilute what makes us human, our ability to think.

AI is destroying ‘the middle.’ It is deleting the safe, white-collar roles where people used to hide and ‘put in their time.’ The hiding spots are gone. The days of sitting behind a desk without adding direct value to an employer's profitability are over.

It's time to start moving.

You need to be remarkable.

Your life is entirely under your control. Every move you make, and every risk you take, is your signature on the world. I wasn't raised expecting favours, which, in hindsight, was the greatest gift my parents ever gave me. Once you stop expecting a handout, you start building something of value.

You need to be irreplaceable.

Throughout my career, I've seen brilliant minds rot because of a single flaw: entitlement. It is psychological cancer. If you start your first job under the delusion that you're owed a lifestyle because you have a degree, you're self-sabotaging. The world, and especially employers, has very efficient ways of deleting those who don't add value.

Success isn't something that happens to you; it must be fought for in a world that wants you to be mediocre. Norman Mailer, whom I recommend you read, understood the ‘spooky’ nature of effort; that there's a certain amount of violence in the pursuit of success.

Mediocrity is the default setting of the universe; it's the gravity that pulls everyone down. This gravitational pull can be avoided by being very careful about who you associate with. It is detrimental to your success to be surrounded by people who believe life is someone else's responsibility—the government's, their employer, or their parents. They're wrong. Rising above the din of mediocrity requires that you be intense, to be what those who are stagnant call ‘unreasonable.’

Be unreasonable.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the most profound change in the way we live since the combustion engine: artificial intelligence.

As AI scales, 'stability' is no longer found in a cubicle or a credential. Stability is found in one place: being the person the Machine can't replicate. The Machine will handle the volume; it will do entrylevel tasks better and faster than you. Don't compete on volume—you'll lose. Your career longevity will be dictated by your ability to navigate the complex, the empathetic, and the physical. These are the human dances that code can't replace.

While the 'safe' white-collar jobs are disappearing, opportunity isn't. It's just moving. It's moving toward the people who are willing to be uncomfortable. The world is built by those who show up, not the ‘quietly brilliant’ waiting to be discovered.

That's a fairy tale. Opportunities are reserved for those who pick up the phone, walk into the room, and demand to be heard.

If you call yourself an introvert, stop. Learn to perform. The Machine doesn't have a sensor for your internal monologue. It only detects two things: output and presence. If you aren't visible, you don't exist.

Nobody speaks about how achieving success is a lonely pursuit. It requires total, radical responsibility. Envision your life as a startup with a headcount of one. You're the CEO of your own existence. Start acting like it.

When you start your first job, don't look for worklife balance,’ that's what the mediocre value. Look for the work. Look for problems. Find the hardest, most thankless task and own it. Become the person who solves problems, not the one who just identifies

them. Identifying a problem is easy and worthless; execution is where the Success Gods live. Don't point at the problem, fix it! That is how you become indispensable.

Ask yourself: What can I physically deposit into the workplace or my community right now? If you're honest, your answer will likely be "not much."

That's okay. Everyone starts with "not much." Your mission is simple: Get better.

Spend your twenties in a state of aggressive self-improvement. Read the books others find boring. Do the jobs others think are beneath them. Work the hours others won't. Work in the office and get to know those who are where you aspire to be one day.

Guard your health. Realize that opportunities are attached to people; join Toastmasters and take a Dale Carnegie Course, learn to engage strangers, and master small talk.

Most importantly, kill your sense of entitlement.

Take heed of what Naval Ravikant said: "Desire is a contract that you make with yourself to be unhappy until you get what you want."

Despite the digital decay, your future is brighter than you probably think, or have been told, provided you realize it's entirely in your hands. You have more leverage than any generation in history. While the Machine is powerful, it is predictable. What is also predictable—and always has been—is that the person who maintains perseverance and a willingness to do what others won’t, will always find a path.

Your future will be determined by what you contribute, not by what you think you are 'due.' While you aren't entitled to success, you are entirely capable of achieving it.

eeding in Saskatchewan is nearly finished with 99 per cent completed. Attention has shifted to in season activities, including haying operations, herbicide applications and monitoring for pests and diseases.

Over the past week, most regions in the province received significant rainfall. While these rains were welcomed in some areas, excessive precipitation in others has led to saturated fields. Combined with periodic high winds, these conditions have delayed incrop spraying operations in several regions.

The Foam Lake area recorded the highest rainfall at 110 millimetres(mm), followed by Hillsborough with 77 mm. Both Elfros and Lacadena reported 68 mm of rainfall.

Rainfall significantly increased topsoil moisture, with surplus conditions increasing in most areas.

Cropland topsoil moisture is: • 20 per cent surplus; • 77 per cent adequate; and • 3 per cent short.

Various causes of crop damage were reported over the past week. Excess moisture remains the primary concern and is causing minor to moderate damage in most regions, with a few localized areas reporting severe impacts. In addition, moderate to severe damage from gophers and strong winds has been noted. Hail caused minor to moderate damage in some isolated areas. Flea beetles continue to persist, with moderate levels of damage reported, while minor damage from cutworms has also been observed.

In the coming weeks, producers are hoping for favourable weather conditions to support crop growth and allow for the completion of spraying operations.

Hayland topsoil moisture is: • 15 per cent surplus; • 77 per cent adequate; • 7 per cent short; and • 1 per cent very short.

The significant rainfall received across most areas of the province has been beneficial for livestock water supplies. Provincially, four per cent of livestock water sources are currently rated as moderately short.
