High School Grads - Whoppers and Choices

You young folk have, over the years, been told a lot of whoppers. You were told that a stork brings babies, and that there is a tooth fairy who gives you money for teeth, and that there is an Easter Bunny that delivers chocolate. You have even been told the fully-dressed whopper - double patty, extra cheese - that there is a Santa Claus.

And now, now that you are graduating from high school, you are being told what is the biggest whopper ever, that there is a dream you can follow, a passion you can embrace - that now you can do what you love.

Well, kids, that’s pretty much all claptrap, foolishness and balderdash. Many of you have probably spent a goodly amount of time shovelling that kind of stuff out of the barn to spread in the fields.

I would hazard a guess that most of the dreaming done by the graduating class has been about that young new French teacher or how you will become the biggest rock star ever or be as rich as Elon Musk.

(For me, it was the geometry teacherwowza.)

To put it very plainly - you don’t know enough right now to know what your lifelong dream is, what your enduring love is, and certainly not what consuming “passion” you will haveand mainly this is because you don't know what all your choices are.

At this point in your lives, you have a very limited world view.

It is pretty much guaranteed that what you are interested in now will change over the years as you mature and learn and develop new and other interests. Fashions change, technology evolves, that delightful young French teacher gets married (but not to you).

You are coming out of high school and that's pretty much like coming out of a dark cave into bright sunlight - you are blinded by the light and surprised by the vastness of the landscape in front of you and you are bewildered by the complexity of all you behold.

Some of you, maybe a lot of you, will be going on to trade school or university so you folks will have a pause before starting your adult life. The rest of you don't get that pause but all of you, now or eventually, will have to get acquainted with life in the real world.

You don't have to have an over-arching dream. You don't have to have an undying love. And for sure you don’t need a passion. But you do need to have a job. And you have to have a job because, you see, another whopper we have told you is that money is the root of all evil.

The truth is that it is the lack of money that is the root of all evil - it is the lack of money that causes hunger, thirst, disease and suffering. It is the lack of money that motivates people to commit criminal acts – to lie, cheat, steal and kill.

Money - your parents' money - has provided you with a roof over your head to keep you warm and dry, food on the table to feed and nourish you. Money - your parents' money - has been paid for the education you have which allowed you to graduate.

You see, the thing is, you graduates have already been living the dreamthe dream where somebody else takes care of you and fulfills your needs, the dream where somebody else pays the bills and you get free parking.

But now that you have graduated high school (or trade school or university) and are becoming young adults, you are going to have to take up that cost burden yourselves.

So, what can you do to maintain that standard of living, maybe even improve on it?

While dreaming and loving are definitely enjoyable pursuits, they don't always pay very well.

And it's pretty much impossible to love anything when, because of the lack of money, you are hungry and cold and tired - the lack of money causes nightmares, not dreams.

So instead of dreaming and loving, take a look around and see what you can do that will pay the bills.

You will have to learn and develop skills that are useful and marketable. This is true whether you learn on the job or go to trade school or university. And these things come with time - and effort.

The world is full of interesting things to do but they are not always easy to see - sometimes you have to look a little closer, dig a little deeper, work a little harder, to find the shiny stuff underneath. And sometimes what is shiny and desirable on the surface turns out to be, on closer inspection, not really all that attractive.

You might find that though a particular job choice is not particularly exciting or rewarding, it does pay the bills and allows you to follow other interests which are more fun but pay less well.

Keep in mind, however, that whatever you do, whatever job you havewhether it is at a fast-food restaurant in the mall or at the head office of the United Nations - all work is intrinsically good and honourable. The service you provide is of benefit to the recipient and it is of benefit to you because you are being paid for providing that service.

And if you don't like the job you have or the direction you're going, look around some more, develop different skills and get a different job, head off in a different direction.

You have choices.

Lots of choices.

Whatever you choose - it will be something more fun and exciting and rewarding than a dream - it will be a life.

Delisle Elementary School Playground Project Receives

$100,000 from Delisle Co-op

The Delisle Elementary School has been growing in population and so to has the need for an updated playground. One that is accessible to everyone. A committee for fundraising has been formed and the beginning of our campaign to raise money for the new accessible playground has begun.

The primary goal is to have an inclusive playground that is accessible to our school, the community of Delisle and the surrounding region - ensuring a space where everyone can access the structure. This playground will be a place where limitations are forgotten and differences are celebrated, a place where everyone is welcome to come play, watch, relax, enjoy nature and learn.

The school is looking for a new play structure on a rubber floor and to replace two swings with two inclusive swing seats.

The Delisle Co-op has long been a strong supporter of DES. They have been involved in many aspects of the school, from donating milk for the breakfast program, judging competitions as well as donating turkeys to ALL the families at the school. They have been a consistent supporter of the Elementary school’s Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies program for many years as well.

The Board of Directors and manager are proud to once again support the Youth of Delisle and the surrounding community and voted unanimously to become the Naming Sponsor of the Delisle Elementary School playground project with a donation of $100,000 to this worthy cause.

The Delisle Co-op will not only have naming rights but will have a say in some design aspects and colours of the new playground structure.

“The Delisle Co-op donates to many community groups, like the Delisle Rodeo, Sports Celebrity Dinner, hockey teams, churches, as well as hosting a fundraiser BBQ every Friday during the summer,” says Darin Sekulich, manager of the Delisle Co-op,”We felt that this project would have a positive impact on our growing community and we wanted to be a major stakeholder as we are a major part of this community as well. We appreciate the support we receive and want to give back, because that is what the Co-op is all about. We’re at home here !”

Delisle Elementary School, the Admin Team (Mr. Jessie Reis - Principal), the staff and the students are grateful that the Delisle Co-op is so generously supporting the youth of today, tomorrow and the future.

A ceremony was held at the school on June 21, during the annual fun night, where a cheque was presented by Delisle Co-op manager Darin Sekulich and Co-op Board President Doug Kielo, to the projects fundraising committee.

If anyone is interested in donating to this worthy cause, please contact Delisle Elementary School at 306-493-2451. Tax receipts can be issued. They appreciate ANY and ALL support.

PIKE LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK

Pike Lake Provincial Park is 20 minutes from Saskatoon and a million miles from the city. Pike Lake is a recreation park characterized by aspen, poplar and Manitoba maple groves; manicured lawns with two picnic areas close to the main beach; desertlike sand dunes a short hike away and a popular outdoor pool with a waterslide.

Add to this a diverse array of plants and wildlife owing to its location on a flood plain of the South Saskatchewan River and you can see why Pike Lake Provincial Park offers a delightful change of pace for people wishing to recharge their batteries without having to travel for hours.

Pike Lake is a shallow body of water that's called an "oxbow" - it's a loop of the South Saskatchewan River that became cut off from the main channel.

A barrier-free trail that starts at the main beach and runs southward to the creek that feeds the lake includes observation decks that provide a good view of the aquatic life and waterfowl in the vicinity.

A 1.5-km nature trail that begins at the interpretive centre, meanwhile, provides a fine opportunity to experience the surprisingly diverse ecosystems contained within this small park.

Like many provincial parks, Pike Lake has seen many upgrades over the past few years. If you haven’t been to the park recently it is worth checking out again.

OUTLOOK & DISTRICT REGIONAL PARK

Framed by the picturesque traffic bridge on the south and the historical C.N. Rail Bridge on the north, the panoramic view of the South Saskatchewan River is the setting for the Outlook & District Regional Park. Located adjacent to the Town of Outlook, this 100 acre park is able to satisfy the recreational needs of the entire family. The natural beauty of the park, the spacious campsites and the mature golf course make this park a popular spot for family reunions, a weekend getaway or an extended stay. From 2000 through 2017 there have been many upgrades to the campground, including 30 amp power service, group camping sites, and updated washroom and shower house facilities.

The Riverview Golf Course is located within the Outlook & District Regional Park along the bank of the South Saskatchewan River. The course is surrounded by beautiful scenery and offers 3 sets of tee boxes with yardage ranging from 5618-6263, giving you a variety of options. In the clubhouse you will find the retail area with a great selection of apparel, golf accessories and more. They are a fully licensed establishment and provide light meals and snacks to take on the course or enjoy on our covered patio which overlooks the 9th hole.

The Town of Outlook also has a lot to offer - such as the new Community Swimming Pool ! Waterslides, lane swimming, a wading pool area and swimming lessons, all just 2 minute from park gate.

We look forward to record breaking attendance and competitor entries, 10 rodeo events from barrel racing to bronc riding, the amazing volunteers, roaring laughter of the wild pony races, and being a family and community focused weekend. The Delisle Rodeo has become an iconic summer event in Saskatchewan – a symbol of community spirit, volunteerism, and the heart of western values.

This year we feature two evening performances on both Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15 starting at 6:00pm, with the beer gardens opening at 4:00pm both days. Saturday morning at 10:00am features the slack performance, which is free to spectators. A ball tournament will also be taking place at the old ball diamonds next to the rodeo grounds on Saturday, July 15 at 9am. Saturday evening we once again hold a cabaret at the rodeo grounds featuring The Company starting at 9:00pm.

Tickets can be purchased that night for $20.

Admissions for the rodeo are as follows: Adult (18+)$20, Student (12-18) - $15, Child (6-12) - $10, Preschool (<6) – free. Weekend passes are also available.

Adult : $30, Student : $25, Child: $20.

The Delisle rodeo committee thanks all of our sponsors for allowing us to bring this great event back to our community!

Please Follow Delisle rodeo on Facebook for updates, current information or questions or email to delislerodeo@gmail.com.
