Hockey Day in Delisle Returns to the Orchard Outdoor Rink Feb 15

D

elisle is set to lace up once again as Hockey Day in Delisle returns to the Orchard Outdoor Rink on Saturday, February 15, 2026. Building on the success of last winter’s outdoor games, this year’s event promises a full day of hockey, family fun, and community connection, bringing together players and fans of all ages at Delisle’s beloved outdoor rink.

The day will feature a packed schedule of outdoor hockey and the highly anticipated Senior Bruins Alumni game, a raffle table, an all-day BBQ, hot chocolate and coffee, a 50/50 draw, on-ice games, and many other family-friendly activities.

The action on the ice begins with U9 group games from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by U11 groups from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Midday activities include a puck toss, musical chairs, and many other games from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Open ice is available for additional teams from Inside Stan’s Place interested community 110 Ruth Street E groups from 1:45 to 2:30 306-655-9000 p.m. Reach out to the Hockey Day in Delisle organization committee or

The afternoon continues with U5 and U7 group games from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m., U13 groups from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., and U15 and U18 group play from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. If required, additional U18 ice time will run from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m.

The day will wrap up with the highly anticipated Adult Alumni Senior Bruins outdoor game from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., a fan favourite that consistently draws spectators from across the community.

Beyond the on-ice action, Hockey Day in Delisle serves an important purpose.

The event is a joint fundraiser for the Orchard Outdoor Rink Association and the Delisle Minor Hockey Association (DMHA), supporting ongoing operating and maintenance costs at the ODR while strengthening local hockey programming. While many non-profit organizations rely primarily on annual memberships, the Orchard Outdoor Rink Association Board believes community-wide events play a vital role in building connection and shared ownership. Partnering with the DMHA for an annual Hockey Day celebration provides an opportunity not only to raise funds, but to rally the entire community around a space that truly belongs to everyone.

“Hockey Day is about more than hockey,” organizers say. “It’s about families coming together, kids playing outdoors, volunteers pitching in, and the community taking pride in something we’ve built together.”

With outdoor games, family-friendly activities, and the unmistakable atmosphere of winter hockey under the lights, Hockey Day in Delisle is shaping up to be a highlight of the season.

Residents are encouraged to come out, buy a burger and a 50/50 ticket, cheer loud, and celebrate everything that makes the Orchard Outdoor Rink a cornerstone of community life in Delisle.

ome people think Christmas Day is the last day of the holiday season, the last day before what they were really waiting for - the Boxing Day Sale that lasts for a week. Other people think Christmas Day is the first day of the holiday season, the start of the Twelve Days of Christmas, ending with the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan 06.

Generally, though, New Years Day is accepted as being the last day of the holiday season - the last day before the kids go back to school and the grown-ups go back to work.

And in some senses that is true. The long-entrenched, socially-accepted anti-Grinch legislation only covers the period from Dec 01 to Jan 01 when there is the requirement to maintain an air of jollity, goodwill and love for your fellow person.

(There are exemptions to the requirements of that legislation - these exemptions apply to shopping mall parking lots on Christmas Eve when the absolute need to buy a gift any gift - is most pressing. The exemption to jollity refers particularly to shopping mall parking-spot-stealing and covers behaviours from nasty-name calling and rude hand gestures, all the way up to, but not including, fisticuffs.)

And with the end of the holiday season, the passing of New Year's Day, we can say good-bye to that cloying, treacly-sweet part of the year, stop all that tiresome jollity and once again feel free to growl and snarl at others every now and then as the (non-holiday) spirit moves us. And no more of all that gosh-awful Christmas music, especially that annoying Little Punk Drummer Boy, banging away inside your head creating an ear-worm that lasts until sometime in March.

Which brings us to the month of January.

January, as months of the year go, is a very confused and confusing month - it is both the end of some things and the beginning of other things.

It is a transition month, named after Janus, the Greek god who could see backwards and forwards at the same time. In January we can see the coming year through a brand-new windshield, one free of cracks and rock chips, sufficiently clean and transparent as to allow us to look forward while also keeping an eye on the rearview mirror, still marvelling over the clutter of what we see there: the joys and the mis-steps, love given and love returned, and the lessons learned, forgotten and learned again, and perhaps even the odd, lingering bits of detritus. And from Janus also comes the word 'janitor' - the guy who cleans up the mess after the party, after everybody else has left, and which gives us the brand-new windshield, the feeling we are starting off the year on a clean and unblemished page.

Even so, the month of January is typically under-appreciated, generally seen as being just cold and dark, a barren period of time devoid of any redeeming features and particularly devoid of any stat holidays to relieve the winter tedium. But the month does have a number of other things to recommend it.

January 01 is Polar Bear Swim Day where we get the year's first dose of zany humour (that's because, you see, all the politicians are still on vacation) watching seriously mis-

guided (and fortunately unelected) people from all across the country go swimming in the ocean or lake or river for 'fun'. There is even a Polar Bear Swim Day in Yellowknife but there good sense prevails and the swim is deferred until May when the ice is off the lake - can't fault that wisdom.

And there is National Cuddle Up Day (Jan 06) and National Hugging Day (Jan 21) which are helpful preludes to Robert Burns Day (Jan 25). Robbie Burns Day is when you can 'warm" up your romantic home environment by reciting one of his famous poems to your beloved - "My love is like a red, red rose, That's newly sprung in June . . ." (Yes, yes, I know the poem refers to June, not January, but work with me here - I'm trying to help.)

Also, there is National Bubble Bath Day (Jan 08) and National Rubber Duckie Day (Jan 13) - you can celebrate them separately but it is also perfectly okay to combine the two - rubber duckies love bubbles, too, you know.

But even with all that, January in Canada can still be a tough sell, especially January in the prairies.

I have a neighbour who used to be a reporter for CBC. He likes to brag that he came out of the BC Legislature Building in Victoria one day late in January to the sound of lawn mowers on the legislature grounds. He taped the mower noise and sent it into his station and from there it was broadcast across Canada. The noise was tagged as the sound of Victoria in January, deliberately, gleefully, giving the gears to the rest of Canada who were hearing the sound of scraping snow shovels, roaring snow blowers, and the high-pitched whine of tires spinning uselessly on ice.

Personally, I've never been a big fan of lawnmowers or the noise they make regardless of the time of year. And even as he spoke, I wondered if my neighbour, he of the CBC, had ever experienced a January morning on the prairies. Stepping outside into a January morning and seeing an immense pale blue sky, completely blue with all the clouds hiding out of sight beyond the horizon. The sun not giving out much heat but over-compensating for that with a dazzling brightness. The 30-below air sparkling as if with excitement at being part of such an excellently wonderful day - an excellently wonderful day to be alive.

Or if he had ever stepped outside on a prairie evening when the moon is full and a new snowfall blankets the ground, the full moon shining at it's most brightly, its luminescence reflecting off the fresh, unsullied snow and creating light sufficient enough to read by, literally, to read by.

All of that being said, however, if you're still "Hunting for Happiness" (third week in January) you might want to do your hunting in Mexico. But you would have to be able to withstand a low-high temperature range of 20-30 degrees (above zero), as well as the heat of the sun, the feel of sand between your toes and the sound of the waves breaking on the shore. And, too, the constant distraction of thong bikinis.

Tough, maybe, but beats the heck out of lawn mower noise.

And oops - almost forgot - January is also Alzheimer's Awareness Month.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

just read the December edition of our local newspaper, The RM Review, cover to cover and enjoyed the content ! I was impressed with the content of the two letters discussing the future of energy in the province and our country. It was really refreshing to read the two different opinions, one that eluded to a previous months letter with an opinion on the energy sources into the future.

My experience with opinions posted on Facebook and TikTok is that they are riddled with vulgarity and some times personal attacks on the opinions of those who post on the platforms.

I myself have engaged in posting my opinion on these social media platforms and have been called many different vulgar names and have commented back that this is just an opinion and not the gospel truth but my feelings on the news of the day. I enjoy reading an opinion that I can verify as being correct when facts are included in the comments of what their personal opinions cover. I also have tried to verify the possibly that the opinion may have been sent to them by an algorithm or was reposted by those that do not try to verify the correctness of the statements.

A civil platform like the letters to the editor as published in The RM Review, do not attack the other person or utilize vulgar language in making their own point. When unverified, vulgar personal attacks occur in social media, readers will not verify the statements made and will take the opinions as

the unmitigated truth. The lack of adherence to truthful, verified statements and opinions appears to be rampant in the platforms, such as Facebook and TikTok, because they allow posts in an almost an anonymous situation.

Getting back to the RM Review, the letter writers names and location are published and they not hiding behind a social media persona.

I enjoy reading the different opinions and I take the opportunity to follow up on any statistics or quotes included in the opinions stated in the letters.

We need more of this access to the civil arena by where opinions can be expressed without lies, misinformation or vulgar personal attacks on those who post their verifiable, truthful opinions.

I am slightly biased, as I am a personal friend of the editor of this awesome monthly paper, but I know that if we do not tamp down the rhetoric in our publications, like the RM Review allows us, our population will become more divisive and personal attacks will continue as a normal part of our lives.

I, for one, want to applaud our local paper and am sure that the editor will continue to publish those that are not hiding behind personas on social media platforms!

Kudos to the RM Review and I look forward to future letters and opinions to be published !

Stop Subsidizing Alternative Power Systems

here are a lot of good points presented in the debate about Saskatchewan and Canadian energy production in your letters to the editor over the last 5 months.

Ryan and Glenn both believe that solar and wind power are the answer to replacing our 3 clean coal fired plants on our southern border. With less than 10 coal fired plants in Canada, we have done more than our share to reduce emissions. When we own the vast coal deposits in the Coronach and Estevan areas, it is just good business sense to keep using this form of generation. With the technology we have,clean coal fired generation is still the cheapest and most reliable source we use.

As Ryan stated the carbon capture project cost about 1.5 billion dollars and hasn't met its promised 90 percent capture rate. We, the public, were told that this was the answer . Like all so called renewable and green energy projects, scientist,engineers,lawyers, and other so called experts keep telling us everyday people how these projects will power 100's of thousands homes and how these carbon capture projects will be the equivalent of taking a million cars off the roads... but EVERY green energy project is overpromised on what they will do and EVERY project under delivers the stated output or savings. This is a fact as you can see for yourself on the Saskpower website.

When you look at "Where Your Power Comes From " on the website, clean coal, natural gas and hydro electricity generation are the only sources that con-

sistently deliver the bulk of the power we need to survive in this province.

So I will challenge Ryan and Glenn to tell the readers just how many homes and businesses that the so called renewable energy sources are powering on a windless night in this country? I will give the correct answer to this question. ZERO. I am not against people using solar, wind ,or electric cars. I have previously stated that I have 5 solar powered water systems for cattle that only work good in the summer. But I made the decision to buy them with my own money. There are taxpayer funded grants for some of these green energy projects but these grants should be ended. All they end up doing is enriching those that can afford these green energy projects. These socialist programs are why it is harder and harder to for the everyday working person to live. There shouldn't be any rebates for heat pumps, electric cars,solar and wind projects, and other so called green energy scams. If they work as advertised then they should sell themselves. If you chose to invest in these systems and they save you money, you shouldn't need any of the tax payers hard earned dollars.

We should keep burning our clean coal and natural gas as it is the most reliable and the cheapest on an actual output equivalence. Expensive, intermittent, and unreliable energy generation should be privately and individually owned as supplemental only. Glenn described the smart cost effective business decision of keeping our reliable clean coal

generation as "reckless and foolish". I would say spending billions of dollars on something that works less the 25 percent of the time sounds like a worse decision and probably would be or was endorsed by the same fool who once said " And the budget will balance itself".

We have to keep using energy generation that is proven to work 365 days a year. We have and will keep on improving these reliable and dependable sources. When it is minus 30 outside like on December 28th 2025, I know which ones I can count on. And by the way Glenn, could you tell us why you removed your wind turbines ?

TOWN OF ASQUITH

he Town of Asquith held its regular council meeting on December 10th, 2025.

The next meeting is scheduled for January 14th, 2026.

Construction for the biological filtration conversion at the water treatment plant is currently in progress, with completion expected by Spring 2026.

As part of its ongoing annual support, the Town contributed $1,500 to Eagle Creek Regional Park.

A reserve account was created for maintenance and upgrades to the outdoor rink. Please note “Outdoor Rink” on any donations made to the Town of Asquith for this purpose.

Increases to monthly utility rates will be in effect for the January 2026 billing cycle. The minimum water rate and garbage/recycling fee will both increase by $1.25 per month, bringing the minimum monthly utility bill to $102.50.

ouncil held a regular meeting on December 11th at 7pm during which the following items were addressed:

eminder to residents to renew / purchase their dog licenses in January – cost is $15 per dog; The cost to renew / purchase in February increases to $30. There are fines for harboring an unregistered dog: $100 for the first offense and $200 for the second offense.

Residents are also reminded NOT to push snow from their property onto the streets or alleys in the Village. Street cleaning is typically done right after a major snow fall and vehicles should be removed from the streets to allow for equipment cleaning the streets.

2025 Taxes were due December 31, 2025.

Anyone with taxes outstanding after that date has been assessed a 10% penalty. Outstanding utility amounts will be added to the tax roll and become subject to Tax Enforcement.

Council of the Village of Vanscoy will be hosting an RCMP Information Session for residents of the Village. The Session will take place at the Circle Hall on Wednesday January 21 at 7:00 PM. The RCMP will speak of policing in and around Vanscoy and will also present a Fraud Prevention Session. This will be followed by a Question-and-Answer Session.

he Christmas season is my favourite time of year. I hope you were able to enjoy at least a few days off with family and friends.

For myself and our Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek Conservative Association, this has been a very busy year.

Of course, there was the federal election this spring. So many of you were generous with your time, donations, and support.

As has been mentioned in past emails, because of your generosity, our Conservative Association was able to support election campaigns in other ridings across Canada. This contributed to Conservatives winning three previously non-held ridings.

This means that you, our faithful donors, added three new Conservative MPs to our caucus.

Immediately following the federal election, our Conservative Association began preparation for the upcoming biannual Conservative Convention being held in Calgary at the end of January 2026.

I’m extremely proud to report that many of our local Association’s policy and constitutional proposals have progressed through the numerous

pre-convention ratification stages and will be debated and voted on at the Convention.

Additionally, we elected a full slate of delegates to attend the Convention.

As 2025 draws to a close, I would like to take one final opportunity to make a year-end donation appeal. Donations up to $400 receive a 75% tax credit.

The Monetization of Rage

hen it comes to “rage baiting,” Jerry Springer, whose daytime talk show aired for 27 seasons from September 30, 1991, to July 26, 2018 (3,891 episodes), was ahead of his time. He understood that an angry fight draws more viewers than a calm discussion, keeps people from flipping channels, and keeps them fixated—exactly what advertisers want.

Fast forward to today, 'rage bait' has been named Oxford Word of the Year 2025. (It's actually two words, but that's semantics, so I'll leave it alone.)

Whether on television, the news, or social media, rage has value enough to be monetized, encouraging online creators to produce rage bait. Their modus operandi is to record videos, create memes, and write posts that provoke anger: conspiracy theories, lies, explosive AI-generated video clips — whatever it takes.

The more content they create, the more engagement they attract, and the more they get paid. There's a financial incentive to create and post material that triggers anger and is likely to be engaged with.

The primary aim of social media is to increase engagement. Anyone with a basic understanding of social media knows that engagement tends to lead to more engagement, since each repost, retweet, quote-tweet, like, or comment introduces your content to a new audience, thus restarting the cycle of engagement.

Furthermore, thanks to the toxic effects of algorithmic amplification—algorithms are designed to show you more of what you've clicked on— negative engagement counts just as much as positive engagement. When you engage with outrage bait, even if it's to express your opposition, you're training the algorithm to serve up more of the same content. Imagine teaching a personal assistant to learn your priorities based on your division of time and attention. If your personal assistant sees that you spend an inordinate amount of time on racist memes and outrage bait, they'll assume that these are your priorities and add more of them to your schedule. Essentially, that's what an algorithm does; it uses your engagement to assess your interests, what's likely to hold your attention, and delivers content to your feed based on that.

Serving up content that emotionally triggers isn't new. Since the 1800s, the news industry has lived by the mantra "If it bleeds, it leads," reminding editors and reporters to give negative stories—sensational, violent, scandalous—priority news coverage because that's what attracts readers, and the more readers, the more advertising dollars.

Worth noting: as social media has become the primary source of news for much of the population, this shift has led many journalists to transition from being investigators and analysts reporting news without an overt narrative to "content providers."

Rage, as the saying goes, is blind. The harassed bull, who's become enraged and conditioned to associate pain with a red rag, attacks the rag rather than the matador waving it. Anger impairs critical thinking, making it easier to be manipulated for someone's or an organization's self-interests. Fox News has used this strategy for decades. If you've spent any time on Trump's X/Twitter account or listened to his press conferences, you've seen how well he triggers and manipulates the anger he incites.

Trump's theatrics have dominated the airwaves for nearly a decade because his eagerness to malign, disparage, denounce, and lie about others has made him a media magnet. Trump may or may not be good for America; only time will tell, but right now, he's very profitable for the news industry and social media platforms. No doubt, media executives love him. It's no surprise that social media influencers, witnessing how news outlets and politicians effectively use rage to attract readers, viewers, and win elections, mimic their strategies.

Rage-bait, click-bait, it's all for the ad money. An angry click is still a click.

What concerns me is how social media, with its adverse effects spilling into "the real world," is becoming more tribal and clan-like, and how black-and-white thinking is becoming increasingly common. People are choosing sides, like in a gladiator match, supporting the teams that reinforce their beliefs and narratives, and there is no stopping them from supporting their teams. It's juvenile and dangerous, and influencers know how to pit teams against each other. If you dare speak your truth—simply offer an opposing view or opinion—you quickly learn many people are so committed to "being right" that they won't consider other viewpoints and vilify you for thinking or believing differently from them.

While rage bait is 2025's Word of the Year, its long-term influence remains in question. I believe rage bait is here to stay. As long as algorithms reward reactions, creators will continue to leverage the easiest emotion to trigger in a human, rage.

Social media has made competition for eyeballs and attention much more intense. Nowadays, there are more than two or three local newspapers along with a handful of radio and television stations competing for attention. Now there's the Internet and social media platforms, with their easy 24/7/365 accessibility and global reach, that, like the news industry, depend on advertisers for revenue and thus require eyeballs; hence, they reward those who can generate outrage that leads to engagement.

Dollars and Sense by Owen Goosen, CIM, B.Comm Early 2026 Tax Tips

W

hen the end of the year approaches, many individuals place a greater focus on tax planning to minimize their income tax liability. Beyond the end of the year, however, there are some areas of tax planning that often get overlooked. For example, there are tax planning strategies that may only be available early in the new year. With that in mind, this article summarizes some of the strategies that have deadlines in early 2026.

Please note that any reference to a spouse in this article also includes a common-law partner.

2025 RRSP Contribution Deadline The deadline for you to make a contribution to a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) that can be claimed as a 2025 tax deduction is March 2, 2026.

If you don't have sufficient cash on hand to make an RRSP contribution, you can consider making an inkind contribution of eligible securities from your non-registered account to your RRSP or to a spousal RRSP. If the securities are in a gain position, you will realize a capital gain when you make the contribution. If the securities are in a loss position, you may not want to contribute the securities in-kind, as your ability to claim that loss will be denied.

Alternatively, depending on your specific circumstances, you may want to consider borrowing funds to make an RRSP contribution. It's important to note that using borrowed money to finance a purchase of securities involves greater risk than a purchase using your existing resources. Your responsibility to repay the loan and pay interest as required by the terms of the loan remains the same even if the value of the securities you purchased declines. Further, the interest paid on money borrowed to make an RRSP contribution is not deductible for tax purposes.

2026 RRSP Contribution Room It's generally a good idea to contribute to your RRSP as soon as possible to maximize the tax-deferred growth in your plan and to avoid the stress of trying to meet a last-minute deadline. Keep in mind that January 1 is the earliest day you can make a 2026 RRSP contribution using the new room that's created from your prior year's earned income without triggering an over-contribution penalty.

If you want to make an RRSP contribution early in the 2026 calendar year, you may need to estimate your 2026 RRSP deduction limit. This is because you may not have received your 2025 notice of assessment (NOA), which provides a statement of your 2026 RRSP deduction limit.

If you're unsure of your available RRSP contribution room, consider waiting until you receive your 2025 NOA from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) before making an RRSP contribution for 2026.

Tax-free savings account (TFSA) Consider making a contribution to your TFSA early in the 2026 calendar year to maximize the potential for tax-free growth in your plan. The TFSA contribution limit (per year) is as follows: • $5,000 for the years 2009 to 2012; • $5,500 for 2013 and 2014; • $10,000 for 2015; • $5,500 for 2016, 2017 and 2018; • $6,000 for 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022; • $6,500 for 2023; • $7,000 for 2024, 2025 and 2026.

If you've been eligible to open a TFSA since 2009 and have not yet contributed to one, your contribution limit would be $109,000 as of January 1, 2026.

If you didn't use your contribution room in a previous year, the unused room is carried forward indefinitely.

In addition, if you withdrew an amount from your TFSA (that's not a withdrawal of excess TFSA contributions) in 2025, you can re-contribute this amount to your TFSA as of January 1, 2026. Any prior-year withdrawal (that's not a withdrawal of excess TFSA contributions) is added back to your TFSA contribution room for the following year. Be extra careful when calculating your room when recontributing to your TFSA, as the CRA can charge penalties for over-contributions.

If you don't have sufficient cash on hand to make a TFSA contribution, consider making an in-kind contribution of eligible securities from your non-registered account to your TFSA. As with RRSPs, if you contribute securities that are in a loss position, you won't be able to use the loss to offset your capital gains. If the securities are in a gain position, you will realize the gain for tax purposes in the year of contribution.

If you didn't use your contribution room in a previous year, the unused room is carried forward indefinitely. In addition, if you withdrew an amount from your TFSA (that's not a withdrawal of excess TFSA contributions) in 2025, you can re-contribute this amount to your TFSA as of January 1, 2026.

Family Income-splitting Loans A potential way to split income with family members involves setting up a prescribed rate loan with your spouse, adult family members or minor children through a family trust. If you've previously set up a prescribed rate loan, it's critical that the annual interest on the loan be paid on or before January 30, 2026. The borrower, whether they are your spouse, your other family members or a family trust, should issue a payment from their account to yours. A cashed cheque may provide evidence that the interest was paid and received by you.

If you miss the January 30 deadline, attribution may apply to the income earned on the borrowed funds for the 2025 taxation year and all future years that the loan is in place.

This would defeat the purpose of setting up this type of income-splitting strategy, since the income and/or capital gains may be attributed to you and taxed in your hands.

Eligible Retiring Allowance If you received a retiring allowance in 2025, you have until March 2, 2026, to transfer the eligible portion to your own RRSP without affecting your RRSP contribution room. This transfer will allow you to defer taxation on the eligible retiring allowance received until it's withdrawn from your RRSP in the future. Keep in mind that your eligible retiring allowance can't be transferred to a spousal RRSP without using our RRSP contribution room.

Unlike regular unused RRSP deduction room that you can carry forward each year, if you don't transfer your eligible retiring allowance by March 2, 2026, you will lose the opportunity to do so forever.

That said, if your eligible retiring allowance is paid to you over two years, for example in 2025 and 2026, you will still be able to transfer the portion received in 2026 to your RRSP any time in 2026 or early in 2027.

Conclusion This article covers some common tax planning strategies and reminders that you may want to consider early in the new year. Speak with your qualified tax advisor to determine if implementing any of the strategies is right for you.

ecember is typically a quiet month for our club. We had our annual member Christmas party which is always lots of fun. We always do a white elephant gift exchange and it is amazing to all of us how many times a fresh loaf of bread can be stolen. We always share many laughs and it is so nice to visit with our senior community members.

Our supper is catered by Jackie Stobbe owner of the Asquith Bar and Grill.

The donations and support that we have received from our local businesses has been amazing and greatly appreciated. We are so thankful for the amazing people in the community and the ways that they come out to support us. We are hoping to continue to receive support throughout the bingo games from January – June, 2026. When we receive a monetary donation, we thank your business in the RM Review as well as a thank you the evening of the bingo a number of times throughout the game for the month you’ve offered your support. This is advertisement for your business and it helps us to offer a larger payout when a customer wins. A win win as they say. Our next bingo night is Friday January 30th, 2026. Bring yourselves, your friends and your family.

In the June RM Review newspaper we will submit a list of the businesses that helped out our community members win a little more during our bingos.

We truly would like to see more community involvement so we continue to ask the question; how do we involve more community members and how do we attract more seniors? We would also like to encourage community members to come forward with new ideas, do you have an event you would like to put on, do you require a rental of our hall for an art/painting class, a dance class, is there an instructor out there that teaches line dancing, a book club, wedding shower, baby shower, funeral, memorial service, billiards tournament, shuffle board, think outside the box and reach out to our President Genevieve Innes, VP Carrie Latta, Secretary Karen Duguid or myself Sue Sawicki Treasurer.

The exercise classes are going really well; we have quite a few people who have decided to move and shake. It has been wonderful to see the large turnout. If you have been humming and hawing about whether you should try it out, ask yourself what is holding you back. There are so many benefits, not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. If you do make the decision to come join us, give yourself a hug and a pat on the back for taking the initiative to move and shake. The exercises start out with a bit of cardio gotta get those hearts pumping, some weights to strengthen our muscles, stretching that helps us stay limber and of course moves to help with balancing. All of these exercises can be modified to fit your physical limitations if you have any. Any level of physical activity is good for us even when modified. It is about moving and engaging with other members of our community.

The moving triggers our serotonin and we feel better mentally and physically. The personal connection with people gives us a sense of belonging targeting our emotional well-being. If we neglect these main areas in our lives post retirement, we become stiff and sore and sad. All of these areas of exercise keep our brains and bodies functioning at their optimum levels. Let’s move ladies and gentlemen, yes men as well we have a few of them. Remember exercise is for everyone. Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:00am-11:00am at the Asquith Seniors centre. Please come and check it out, get limber and meet some new people. Our trained and wonderful leaders for the classes are Diane Haugrad and Trudy Westad. There is no cost for this service, our goal is to assist our seniors to be as healthy as they can be with a little movement in their lives. As you know balance is a problem as we age and exercise helps with that. Get moving it helps us to stay strong. What do you have to lose, on the other hand you have plenty to gain.

A reminder billiards are every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:00pm. Canasta (Hand & Foot) is every Monday and Friday at 1:00pm. All activities take place at the Asquith Seniors Centre. (Better Life Recreation Centre). Please come and check us out.

I plan on running a few pieces in the articles that hopefully will help with awareness about scams.

Let’s discuss the first step to scams and cyber threats. As a senior I decided to take a course through Connected Canadians (google them and check it out) on scamming and cyber threats. All courses are free and they have trained and knowledgeable people to answer any questions you may have. I completed and earned a certificate in the course. It was a way to keep myself safe and now I would like to include some information that I learned. One of the things I did learn was never to keep this topic a secret. If you think you have been scammed, are being scammed or feel like something isn’t right the first thing to do is STOP and speak to a family member or friend. Seniors have become the target for scammers they see us as vulnerable and easy to scam. It is time to take stock and become aware of the ways they try to target us.

1. Do not ever answer your phone if you do not recognize the number. Let it go to voicemail. Typically, scammers do not leave a message.

2. Report and block that number every single time. If you do not know how to do this ask a friend or family member.

3. If you do answer the phone and someone tells you they are from the bank or the Canada Revenue Agency and you have been compromised; HANG

UP. Banks or CRA will never do this.

4. If you do get caught speaking to someone and they become angry with you or tell you that you MUST do whatever they need and to do it quickly, STOP! Professional people will never speak to you this way and nothing is ever that important.

5. Do not click on any link that tells you ‘Your parcel cannot be delivered’, or any link from a bank, insurance company, Sask-Tel I have these all the time. It is a scam and they are looking to get your information. I have been personally scammed this way, luckily my credit card company recognized it and reversed the charges.

Warning signs: 1. Pressure to act quickly 2. Requests for secrecy 3. Unusual payment methods for instance gift cards, bitcoin, prepaid credit cards 4. Emails with suspicious links, attachments or requests for financial/personal data.

5. Malware and Ransomware. Malware is harmful software like viruses, Trojans and spyware that can steal data, damage your system and can enable unauthorized access. Ransomeware can encrypt and steal files and will then demand payment for access.

We have all heard about Pretexting which is fake scenarios to extract personal details. The scammer wants your personal data or they make up a scary scenario that makes you panic. Do NOT panic! Hang up and call a family member or friend. The first step to keeping your self safe from scammers is to try not to panic and call a friend or family member. I will be continuing to add to the information that I received.

If you have any questions or are the victim of a scam, please share your story with community members or reach out to me. One important thing to remember is you are not stupid and should never feel embarrassed, the scammers are very good at their job. Next month we will discuss romance scams.

I want to share a community tidbit that is an annual event that has occurred since 2016. Jackie Stobbe has been putting on a free meal for all community members as a thank you to the community for supporting the Asquith Bar & Grill. The supper is typically the first or second Saturday of December. What an amazing meal it was; Caesar salad, ham, turkey, perogies, mashed potatoes, buns, gravy and a number of different squares for dessert. It was lovely. Keep this in the back of your mind for next December, 2026 it was so good.

I have lived in this community for almost 23 years and have come to realize that this community truly gives back, there is a Secret Santa every year. Community members donate money or non-perishable foods to the Asquith Town office and between 15-20 hampers are made up for families that may need just a little extra for the holidays. There are also the Christmas Pails, made up of Christmas baking that go to the single/widowed men in our community. If there are any other organizations or community helpers and would like a mention please reach out.

This is truly amazing to me.

Our senior meeting was on Monday January 5th at 3:00pm at the centre, thank you to all who came.

During our meetings we encourage new ideas and suggestions. We appreciate and value any new and exciting ideas. Put your thinking caps on and come and join us. Usually the first Monday of every month.

We would like to put out the word that the Fundraising committee will be getting together on January 10th at 11:00am to discuss our fundraiser in March. We are planning something special. Keep your eyes open and your ears tuned. We will be hosting our famous pancake supper on Wednesday February 18th. Everyone is welcome, I mean who doesn’t like pancakes for supper?

AGRICULTURE REPORT Southbound Cereals - How Canada Feeds A U.S. Need

C

anadian cereals are a hot commodity south of the border, where the $3 billion U.S. market for this country’s cereals-based products is highly integrated. Despite the current trade climate in which tariff uncertainty has become the norm, this demand remains strong for a range of reasons.

“The U.S. is a key export market for Canadian cereals,” said Mark Walker, vice-president of markets and trade with Cereals Canada. “It is our fifth-largest market for wheat, second largest for barley and the No. 1 importer of Canadian oats.”

The U.S. numbers on barley are informative, but they don’t tell the whole story. “In 2022-23, the U.S. grew 3.7 million tonnes of barley and imported 500,000 tonnes from Canada,” said Jon Driedger, vice-president of LeftField Commodity Research in Winnipeg, MB. “The majority of barley that they buy from us is for malting. The next year, those numbers were four million tonnes and 300,000 tonnes, respectively. What we sell them Spencer Fox is a small piece of their total, but it obviously fills 306-361-9701 a need.”

THE APPEAL OF WHEAT On the wheat side, Canadian exports to the U.S. are more substantial. “Canada supplies 98 per cent of all wheat imports into the U.S, underscoring how American millers need Canadian wheat to meet rising domestic and international demand for wheat-based products,” according to Alberta Grains.

“We sold them 1.25 million tonnes of wheat, mostly hard red spring, in 2022-23, 1.48 million tonnes in 2023-24, and 1.72 million tonnes [as of late August] this year,” said Driedger. “That said, Canada exported about 19 million tonnes of wheat to all countries in 2023-24. The U.S. is an important market, but it is one customer among many.”

Canadian wheat appeals to the U.S. on multiple fronts. Apart from offering high glucan quality that meets the specific requirements of the American milling industry, Canada offers regional market variations. The latter gives purchasers in the U.S. access to a variety of blends across Canadian regions. This helps U.S. buyers cater to the diverse demands of their customers.

“We export a lot of finished and semi-finished products to the U.S., and that is critical for Canada’s wheat sector,” said Walker.

MALT MATTERS The availability and high quality of Canadian barley also give it appeal south of the border.

“The processed malt we send to the U.S. accounts for about 15 per cent of their total needs for the brewing sector,” said Peter Watts, managing director of the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) in Winnipeg, MB .

In addition to consistent supply and quality, there are fewer logistical challenges for U.S. buyers in the purchase of barley from their immediate neighbour to the north. “The Canadian malting industry has a longstanding relationship with their American counterparts, from large operations to small craft brewers,” said Watts. “Those connections develop over time, and our malting companies produce specific products that those customers desire.”

Each year, American brewers and malting companies plan their business operations 12 months in advance, which includes securing sources for the raw materials they need. To have multiple options is vital to business risk management, and Canadian supply options are a big piece of this puzzle. “Ag products are subject to the vagaries of weather, so when the U.S. has a challenging harvest for malt barley one year, they can look to Canada with confidence,” said Watts.

LOGISTICAL LOGISTICS Logistics is a key component of North American crossborder integration. Processed malt moves to American buyers mostly by rail, usually on a route that appeals to the end user. “If there is a nice rail line from a plant in Winnipeg or Calgary or Saskatoon to the U.S., the product becomes even more valued by American companies, as they can source what they need easily and competitively,” said Watts.

While Canadian cereals have not been a direct tariff target, they have nonetheless felt the effects of ongoing trade tension. Fallout includes changes to the cereals trade relationship and the Canadian approach to marketing into the U.S. “It has certainly felt like a trade war at times,” said Walker. “Fortunately, Canada’s ag products are CUSMA [Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement] compliant, and those are not tariffed.”

THE WAY WE WERE The long-term trade relationship between the two nations has shown strain. “I used to hear from people that the U.S. was the most straightforward market we could sell to, but that is no longer the case,” said Walker.

It is commonly held that the biggest downside of the trade fight is lack of predictability. “The worst impact is uncertainty,” said Watts. “This makes it hard for companies on both sides of the border to plan purchases too far in the future. People are basically buying hand to mouth, as they just don’t know what will happen.”

Although the lack of certainty has not affected cereal volumes moving south, it has led to increased transaction costs for both countries. “Canadian grain exporters never needed customs brokers in the past, as the sales process to the U.S. just worked,” said Walker.

“This year, in the months following Trump’s inauguration, people were scrambling to get that assistance from brokers. They have also spent a lot of time and resources checking in on supply chains to reassure them.

That was never a thing until now.”

On the bright side, U.S. commercial demand for Canadian crops and ag products remains strong, at least for now. “One importer told me that ‘Canada is where oats come from; nobody has oats like Canada,’” said Walker.

“Going forward, we will have to see what comes from negotiations, and whether the goalposts move again.”

BRACE FOR IMPACT? If the Canada–U.S. relationship further sours, Walker foresees increased costs for both countries that will hurt consumers. “Ag tariffs would mean higher prices for breakfast cereals, breads, pastas and such, all of which are staple foods. With inflation rising in the U.S., we want to be there to help keep grocery costs down for Americans and boost food security.”

In the meantime, organizations such as Cereals Canada feel a sense of urgency, and have redoubled their efforts at market development and diversification in the AsiaPacific region while working to maintain strong ties with the U.S. “To date, for the most part, we haven’t seen ag products impacted by tariffs, or any trade disruption for crops,” said Watts. “I am cautiously optimistic that, given the importance of trade in cereal grains between the two countries, our industry may be spared the effects seen in sectors like steel, aluminum and automobiles.”

Still, it’s worth noting that even a 10 per cent tariff would create massive trade woes for Canada’s ag sector.

“I am crossing my fingers that we’ll be able to maintain our trade in crops without tariffs,” said Watts. “The alternative would cause significant damage and impair our ability to supply the U.S. market in a competitive way.”
