January Happenings in

We were on a brief escape from winter, Mrs B and I, flying from Calgary into Phoenix, Arizona looking for a little warmth

We were seated in the very back of the plane and so were the last to exit behind what seemed like pretty much most everybody in Alberta

We continued to be behind that great ponderous mass of humanity through customs and baggage-claim and through the line-up for the shuttlebus to the car rental centre And we were still behind them while lining up to fill out the interminable paperwork required before being entrusted with a set of ignition keys for the rental car

But finally, finally we are at our car The trunk is open and I am loading the suitcases

Oops Golly gosh darn Heck Plus some other words

It looked like my suitcase - same colour, same size, same shape - but it wasn't my suitcase More of those other words

Desperate, I wondered if I could make it work anyway and unzipped the suitcase to take a peek inside And see pink, frilly underwear Nope, definitely not workable - I'm not allowed to do that anymore

Much, much, much later I finally found the right terminal building to exchange suitcases

I parked the rental at the curb and leaving Mrs B in the car, rushed into the building

Even with having to go up to the second floor and search out the 'Wrong Baggage' office, it only took a few minutes to return the wrong suitcase, retrieve the right suitcase (I made sure to check) and get back out to the sidewalk

But no car

"I told her not to move the car but she just won't listen " So I started walking and muttering and fuming

The road was one-way so I just walked in the direction of traffic thinking that Mrs B had just parked a little further down the road

I walked and walked, and muttered and fumed, expecting to see the car at any moment

I didn't see the car but was still thinking Mrs B had just kept going until she found a safe place to park

Eventually I came to what appeared to the very last lot It was empty, completely empty Except for an airport maintenance guy in a pick-up "Are you lost?" he says "Heck, no," I reply, "but my car appears to be "

"Well, just put your suitcase in the back of the truck and I'll drive you around the terminal, see if we can find it," he says

About three quarters of the way back on the other side of the terminal (who knew there were two sides? but that didn't click until too-late later), there is the rental car with Mrs B sitting in the front seat

"There it is," I shout, "there it is " The truck stopped and I bailed out, grabbing my suitcase and calling, "Thank you, thank you, thank you" over my shoulder I ran up to the car, opened the door and in as civil a tone as I could muster, and not in an overly loud voice, said "You moved the car I told you not to move the car I couldn't find the car Why did you move the car?"

Mrs B had brought her cold-as-aCalgary-winter voice with her and she used it to say "I couldn't move the car You have the keys "

I was surprised, caught a little off guard but still managed to hastily manufacture a cheerful tone and said "Oh Well Um, okay, then "

Mrs B had apparently brought a goodly supply of that cold-as-aCalgary-winter voice with her because she then used a fair bit of it to inform me that, while waiting, she had developed an overly-long and lessthan-cordial relationship with the parking enforcement officer who every few minutes kept insisting that she move the car, she was in a loading zone

Leaving the airport, I concentrated on my driving and became very focused and intent on finding the right exits and making sure we were headed in the right direction to get to our hotel But all the same, I noticed that it was very quiet in the car, very, very quietalmost like sound hadn't been invented yet, that kind of very quiet

I wondered if this was maybe because my hearing was still muffled by the change in air pressure from the descent of the plane

Except every now and then, I would hear things that almost sounded like 'idiot' and 'jerk' and other words But that couldn't be, not coming from Mrs B, and I just kept focused on my driving and assumed that she must be clearing her throat, what with the dry climate and all

As it turned out, the weather in Phoenix continued to remain much cooler than I had expected, not warm at all I

right suitcase but still had the wrong stuff - shoulda packed a parka

Thanks to everyone for donating items to the Mitten Tree set up in Affinity Credit Union – there are many scarves, toques, mitts, etc going to the needy in January

Delisle Angel Tree Program another Success in 2022

The Delisle Angel Tree Program had another busy year having provided some special Christmas cheer for 58 individuals and families from Delisle and surrounding area and towns It was wonderful again this year to see the community come together to help out, and we want to send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone that donated and volunteered their time Thank you to the community Angels picking up the tags from the tree and buying gifts Thank you to everyone that dropped off a cash donation Thank you to everyone that donated food items Thank you to everyone that donated their time, spread the word about the program and nominated community members

Three months of preparations all come together when the Delisle Fire Hall is turned into Santa's Workshop for one morning All the gifts get brought there, turkeys and food, so much food! Everything gets sorted, numbered and packed up for all our families, that then either come to pick up their packages or we deliver to them

Planning for 2023’s soccer season will be starting very soon, and we need your help

The Delisle Soccer group, like many other sports groups, struggled through the Covid 19 shutdowns Our first season back was limited to only practices while wearing masks No parents were allowed on the field, and we had to enforce social distancing That proved to be much easier for the older groups and extremely stressful for the coaches of the U4 and U6 teams

This year, we were back in nearly full force With 29 competitive teams in our league, through 5 separate towns, our 2022 season was a success

It started off a little bumpy

The Sask Central Soccer League’s coordinator was brand new this year and struggled to work out the schedule and contact all the previous town coordinators An understandable issue considering the previous season didn’t require a schedule and that many volunteers didn’t come back to the sport when the regulations lifted

Despite the issues, a schedule was finalized, with help from Delisle Soccer’s President, Dave LaPlante, and the season commenced, ending, of course, with the tournament in Delisle on June 11th

This program is a helping hand to the ones in need The help needed is often financial, but we also get to cheer up individuals and families that might have lost someone or are in a difficult situation Some nominations are also about giving back to those that are always there to give to others in our community!

We try to accept all nominations coming in and leave it up to nominees whether or not to accept the nomination We have families that needed the extra help last year, but not this year and vice versa We have people that have been recipients in the past, but are now helping out with the program and supporting it

The Delisle Angel Tree is a program about getting what you need and giving what you can It is a program about spreading joy and cheer, and it is a program full of smiles As a committee we are thankful to be in the midst of it and thankful for all that take part!

Delisle Soccer has strived over the years to keep our fees low and the fun on high We offer coaching clinics before the season to make sure our volunteer coaches are prepared and able to foster a desire to play the sport through fun and enjoyment This year, unfortunately, most of our board members have had to go their separate ways We find ourselves nearing the beginning of a season with no one to prepare for it Our board positions have been divided down into as many categories as possible to make the least amount of work for everyone, but without enough volunteers to fill each space it becomes a lot Of course, with no volunteers at all, there will be no soccer

Please join us on January 22nd, 2023 at the Delisle Town Hall at 4pm to see how you can help youth soccer continue in Delisle Children are welcome to attend, and a meal will be provided courtesy of Bruja de La Luna

Contact Delisle Soccer at delislesoccer@gmail com to let us know if you plan to attend so we can order enough to feed everyone

This Holiday Season, Practice Safe Online Shopping

The winter boots were exactly what I was looking for; warm and stylish As luck would have it, they were on sale for half price However, this was the first time I heard of this e-tailer, which claimed to be UK based Their website didn't provide an address or telephone number, only an email address a red flag So, I searched for reviews on Google Sure enough, I found numerous negative reviews ranging from not receiving orders to the boots being made poorly to the inability to contact the company to arrange a return

I never ordered the boots

With the holiday season upon us, inevitably, shopping for gifts online will significantly increase Shopping online is much more appealing than wandering around crowded malls searching for the right gift for your family and friends What could be better than sitting at home with your drink of choice, surfing the Internet for gifts from all corners of the world?

There are many compelling reasons to shop online besides convenience First of all, bargains abound Then there's the mind-boggling selection Shipping is fast With the right e-tailer, returns are easy Online shopping has never been easier or more convenient

Unfortunately, there are the bad guys In 2019, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center received an average of 1,300 online theft complaints daily, totalling $3 5 billion in losses to individuals and businesses

While somewhat alarming, these stats shouldn't keep you from shopping online It's just a matter of using common sense and following practical advice

• Shop on sites you're familiar with or friends and family recommend

Amazon com carries everything under the sun All major retailers, such as The Bay, Walmart, Best Buy, and Home Depot, have an e-commerce site Are you shopping for something that's "one-of-a-kind"? Try eBay, Etsy or Uncommon Goods It's prudent to only shop on well-known and reputable e-commerce sites

• Vet new-to-you

e-tailors

Research any e-tailer you've never used before

Say you come across that item you know Uncle Arnold will cherish or you must buy for yourself, such as the boots I came across on an e-commerce site you've never heard of, proceed with caution Is the site full of incorrect spelling and obvious grammar errors? Is the site using a different top-level domain (e g , net, info, vip instead of com)? Are the prices on the site too good to be true? Offering unbelievable prices is how scam sites lure people into ordering (READ: Give their information )

If the above-mentioned doesn't raise any suspicion, visit the website's 'Contact Us' page Are an address and phone number listed? If yes, call the business Finally, check online reviews for the e-tailer and visit the Better Business Bureau website to find out if there have been any complaints

• Never buy from a site that doesn't have SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption installed

SSL protects the website from phishing scams, data breaches, and other threats Ultimately, it builds a secure environment for both visitors and the site owner

Always ensure a site's web address begins with HTTPS (e g , https://www ebay ca) instead of just HTTP Additionally, a padlock icon should also appear to the left of the URL in the address bar

• If you can't shop as a 'guest,' create a unique password

Often, you’ll have to create an account with a password to make a purchase Make an account only if you are planning to visit the site frequently

If you must, or wish to, create an account, create a complex password using lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols (e g , 830-630=TwoHundred) and create a separate password for every account you create

• Always pay with a credit card or via PayPal.

Never use debit A credit card doesn't give the seller direct access to the money in your bank account Moreover, most credit cards offer $0 liability for fraud

TIP: Designate one credit card and one email address exclusively for creating accounts and shopping online This way, should your card be compromised, you can immediately shut it down without affecting your other transactions, such as monthly bill payments and subscription renewals

• Keep the details.

Once you have completed your purchase, print the receipt (order confirmation number, tracking number) and keep them until your item(s) arrive This information will help you resolve any issues with your order

By following the tips above and being proactive when shopping online for holiday gifts and a few well-deserved gifts for yourself, you can shop with peace of mind Nick Kossovan, a self-described connoisseur of human psychology, writes about what's on his mind from Toronto You can follow Nick on Twitter and Instagram @NKossovan

Snow as a Water Source for Livestock

nutrients to remain productive

are protein, energy, vitamins, minerals and water Of these nutrients, water is arguably the most important Daily water requirements

dependent on livestock species, breed, animal status, activity level, stage of production (growth, pregnancy, lactation or maintenance), environment and climate Beef cattle require 22 to 75 litres of water per day

Several studies performed by the University of Alberta have shown that energy diverted to thawing snow will not cause herd performance to decline These studies indicate that heat produced from feeding/grazing along with standard body metabolism is more than adequate to melt the ingested snow and bring it up to body temperature There are no metabolic differences observed between livestock given snow or water

Providing snow as a water source can be beneficial to an operation by reducing electricity costs associated with heated water bowls and pumping systems To see the benefits from using snow as a water source, managing the snow and cow herd is essential Snow must be fresh, clean and present in adequate amounts Hard-crusted, wind-blown and trampled snow will make utilization for the cow more difficult as it will not be easily accessible It takes ten centimetres of snow to produce one centimetre of water, so a backup water source should be in place in case of shortfalls in snow depth or changes in snow condition The Beef Cattle Code of Practice will

help you determine when snow can be used as a water source Snow must not be used as the sole water source for cattle that: - are lactating; - are newly weaned; - have body condition score of 2 5 or less out of 5; or - don’t have optimal feed resources

When providing snow as a water source, it is important to monitor the cattle, specifically their body condition Mature cows consume 2 5 per cent of their body weight in dry feed daily A drop in feed intake could mean cattle are not getting an adequate supply of water, which will cause weight loss over time Once cattle become close to calving, their water requirements increase, so cows close to calving or lactating should have access to clean fresh water Regardless of water source, cattle should always be provided with rations that promote proper nutrition, and access to adequate shelter to help with maintaining condition and overall health

With proper management, snow can be used as a water source for some classes of cattle in the winter months Monitoring snow quality and quantity, along with the feed resources and body condition of the cattle, are key factors when deciding whether to use this practice For more information on this or other livestock related topics please contact your local livestock and feed extension specialist or call the Agriculture Knowledge Centre at 1-866-457-2377
