Ready to get Back to Normal ?

ike every year at this time we collectively ushered out the past year and welcomed in the new one. Like last year, most of us were glad to see it go ! It was yet another tough year full of challenges due to the ongoing pandemic, including various social, economic and mental health issues that came with it. 2022 may see this pandemic shift to an endemic as the current Omicron variant sweeps through the global population with a stunning infection rate. Though a smaller percentage of the infected require hospitalization, the sheer number of the people infected is still throwing hospitals into turmoil. Fortunately vaccines slow it down, but the unvaccinated ensure that the beds and morgues stay full. Ironically, this “less severe” variant is causing a dramatic disruption in every other aspect of society as people with “milder” symptoms still have to stay home to recover. The bright spot for survivors is that once this variant goes through our bodies, the “herd immunity” effect may turn this into a manageable endemic. Hopefully by this summer.

So maybe 2022 will be the year when we do get to return to normal. But do you even remember normal ? Look back two, three or four years and think about who you once were. It was a time when spirited debate of political ideals, policies and the acceptance of a democratic election was common. A small percentage of fanatics wanted to tear the whole system down, but now that number of people has grown. Are you one ? Conspiracy theories, once embraced by a few weirdos in the community, are now the mantra of seemingly intelligent people. Are you one ? Trusted, respected public figures managing schools and hospitals now have people threatening their lives and families. Are you one ? If you expect to get back to normal, you need to be honest about who you were, who you have become, and who you now want to be... ...because this is far from normal. Ken Sowter Editor

Down the Road

by Brian Brannagan

M

Whitehorse, Yukon

rs. B and I flew into Whitehorse (north of 60!) for the June solstice - the longest day of the year. We wanted to experience the 24 hour daylight thing. Very cool to see. And a trifle weird. Whitehorse is a small town, population of about 25,000 but a veritable United Nations of different nationalities. Coming out of the airport terminal building, I went over to one of the shuttle buses and talked to the driver - he was from India. “You're a long way from home” I said. “Yes,” he said, “but not as far as that guy” and he jutted his chin toward to an African fellow who was driving one of the other shuttle buses. We checked into our hotel room which had a small kitchen and then went out to buy a few groceries from the corner store. The cashier lady was immediately noticeable - she was wearing a burka and turns out she was from Jakarta. Jakarta, I said to her, “Jakarta is half-way around the world and on the equator, how the heck did you end up here ?”

those buzz words I have been hearing way too much of lately and which is a word that is always followed by... "is our strength" and yada, yada, yada. Well, let me tell you: Forget talking about it, folks, we're already there and have been for some time. And personally, I think that's a very good thing - there are a lot of people around us from all over the world with interesting stories to tell and adventures to recount. This would include the guy I met recently who moved from Quito, Ecuador (like Jakarta, right on the equator) to Weyburn, Sask. He lived in Weyburn for 15 years before moving to Victoria. He still misses Saskatchewan, he says, and all the wonderful people - even those who teased him about wearing a snowmobile suit for 9 months of the year. Also included is the fellow I used to work with in Calgary whose parents emigrated from China and opened a small business in Maple Creek, Sask. Most people who live outside of Saskatchewan have never even heard of Maple Creek or Weyburn. But somehow people from Ecuador and China travel across continents and oceans to live in those places.

One of the little towns about an hour's drive out of Whitehorse is called Jake's Corner - and of course I have to visit the town that's named after my son. And it was indeed a small town, a very small town - an outdoor telephone booth, a couple of gas pumps, and a building housing the gas station cashier and a restaurant. I went into the restaurant section and a young lady came out from the back to tell me the restaurant was closed (no lunch for me). The young lady - the waitress when the restaurant was open - was very pretty with long black hair and an accent. I'm from Romania, she enlightened me. Romania is a whole country most of us can't hardly find on a map. So how did this young lady manage to cross two continents and an ocean to find Jake's Corner which is much, much less than a country? And more to the point, perhaps, why?

“Ya”, he finally grumbled, “and da longer I verk here, da verse it gets”.

Meeting all these people from so many different parts of the world got me thinking about "diversity" - one of

Probably just the gas and diesel fumes making him grumpy. Oh, well.

But, of course, not everybody agrees with me (a less attractive aspect of diversity) about the benefits of immigrants. On the way back to the airport in Whitehorse, I stopped off at a gas station to re-fuel the rental car. There was an older gentleman behind the counter running the till. I was trying to make a little conversation with him but he was having none of it. But I persisted, remarking on all the different countries and people that were represented in Whitehorse, and what an interestingly diverse population it was. He wasn't particularly impressed.

A Beautiful Life Requires Making Beautiful Choices by Nick Kossovan

A

s I write this, a "return to normal" doesn't seem likely in the near-distant future. (Fingerscrossed for 2023.) During the past 18 months, I have been envying—and learning from—those with the mental strength to not let external factors dictate their mood, focus, motivation, and behaviour. With so much uncertainty and upheaval out of our control— and more likely to come—most people probably think making 2022 New Year's resolutions is pointless. Has making New Year's Resolutions been your thing, but the world's chaos has discouraged you from doing so? Consider a different path for self-improvement and change—make better decisions! We don't give our decisions the seriousness they deserve. Undeniable: At any given moment, your life is the sum of the choices you've made. During a pandemic, when it seems the government is making most of your decisions for you or limiting the choices you can make, you can still make decisions that serve your needs and goals. It could be argued COVID19 created unique opportunities for making better choices, such as who you chose to have in your bubble, cooking at home instead of paying restaurant prices, and not spending hours wandering a mall as a mindless consumer. Then there are obvious "COVDI19 choices": whether to social distance, wear a facemask, get vaccinated (and a booster shot), believe "the science," and follow government guidelines. The Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus said, "If your choices are beautiful, so too will you be." Life truisms don't get any simpler. You are what your choices make you, nothing more and nothing less.

(READ: choice opportunity) are made on auto-pilot— what you eat and drink, how you talk to people, whether you go to bed early or stay up late trying to prove to someone on Twitter that you are right (Chances are neither of you is.), and most importantly, what you think and choose to believe. Some days, you have more significant choices to make. Do you stand up for your values? Do you help someone who needs your help? Do you go the extra mile at work or deliver "good enough"? Do you save the bonus you received or spend it on a vacation because you feel you deserve a vacation?

There's no escaping it: If you want a beautiful life, you need to make beautiful choices. You need to choose the option that will give you a positive return—that'll be a step towards achieving your goal(s).

Drinking water instead of soda. (healthier, saves money) Hanging out with friends in a bar or working on the PowerPoint presentation for the client meeting you'll be facilitating next week. (move your career forward, saves money)

Consuming news or having a meaningful discussion with a close friend. (better for your mental health, connecting with someone) Donating to a local food bank or buying gifts trying to impress people. (giving back to your community, practicing gratitude, paying it forward)

I imagine Epictetus was talking about human behaviour being beautiful, not physical beauty. Your life choices apply to both. Whether behavioural or physical, your beauty depends on the choices you make.

2022 is here and, therefore, the perfect chance to get in the habit of making beautiful choices.

One of the consequences of COVID has been hyperinflation. Price increases have likely made you question your spending—your consumerism. You can make a choice to deal with inflation by consuming less, which is excellent for the environment and your finances, or you can choose to increase your debt load. Adjusting your spending, choosing your needs over your wants, and not trying to look rich are beautiful choices.

You know you deserve better. You know you're capable of better. Where your life at any given moment is the sum of your choices. Envision where you want to be on Saturday, December 31st, 2022. 40 kg lighter? Earning $30,000 more? In a romantic relationship? On your way to mastering a new language or skill? Writing that book, you keep saying you want to write? A better job?

In all its forms, holistic human beauty takes exercise (physically, mentally), discipline, and sacrifice. It takes weeks and months and years. It is you choosing day after day after day to get out of bed at 5 A.M. and go for a run. It is you choosing to pick up a book instead of scrolling your social media feed or bingewatching another Netflix series. It is you choosing to buy groceries and cook for yourself instead of having fast food delivered. It is you choosing to journal instead of texting. It is you choosing to say "no" to opportunities so you can say "yes" to what's important to you.

Choose where you want to make real changes in your life or where you have a powerful 'why' for wanting to do so and make beautiful choices that will lead to that change. Whatever your end vision is, better choices— beautiful choices—will get you there.

Not a day goes by where you don't have opportunities to make beautiful choices. Many of your decisions

MP REPORT Kelly Block, MP

Earlier this week the Finance Minister unveiled her Fall Economic Statement. Unfortunately, it was a big disappointment as it failed to address the biggest crisis facing Canadians across the country today, the rising cost of living. The Liberal’s high-tax, high-deficit agenda will continue to cripple our economy and lead to a higher cost of living. Justin Trudeau’s disinterest in monetary policy has led this country down a troubling path. Canadians from coast to coast have said that the out-ofcontrol inflation is causing life to become less affordable. His inflation tax is eating away at the paychecks of middle-class Canadians and the Liberals are doubling down on their inflationary economy with even more spending and deficits.

December 17, 2021

Inflation is on course to reach a thirtyyear high. Housing and gas prices have risen by a third. Family spending on food is set to increase by $1000 per year on average. This is unacceptable. It’s obvious, the Liberal plan is not working, this was made clear in the economic statement where it was confirmed that economic growth came in over a per cent lower than expected. The bottom line is that life is getting more expensive for Canadians, and the growth of our economy is being stunted by this government. My Conservative colleagues and I will continue to be the voice for Canadians left behind by this Liberal government’s policies. We will hold the Liberals to account for their failing economic strategy.

Eagle Creek Veterinary Services New Clinic in Rosetown

E

agle Creek Veterinary Services was founded by Dr. Colton McAleer. He grew up near Unity, SK and graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. He then worked in a mixed animal practice in Maple Creek for two years before moving to Rosetown and starting Eagle Creek Veterinary Services in 2018. The practice was initially a mobile only practice for small and large animals. Colton enjoyed the mobile practice, but he found it hard to serve very many clients in a day and he also missed doing small animal surgeries. Now, with a full clinic, he is able to provide more veterinary services for both small and large animals with the added capacity to hospitalize overnight, perform surgeries, and run inhouse diagnostics.

The clinic has three exam rooms, a treatment room, X-Ray room, separate kennel rooms for dogs and cats, a dental room, surgery suite, lab, isolation ward, as well as large animal handling facilities. The building was designed by AODBT Architecture and Design, and contracted by Strata Construction. Colton and Chad Hittel designed the large animal facilities and Chad did the custom welding. The clinic is located at 803 Loken Road and was opened to the public on July 6, 2021. Office hours are Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm. Phone number is still 306-831-8387. For after hours emergencies call (306-831-9222) The staff includes Colton, 2 registered vet techs, a receptionist, and 2 part time students. Mobile services are still provided for large animals only.
