LETTER TO EDITOR
R
eading Glenn Wrights letter in January's edition has left me with a few questions for him. He starts out with some "truths" he says he heard on the past election campaign that he leaves us to believe are not true or that those that said such things are misinformed or just dumb. But then later towards the end of his letter he provided a statement of "farmers in PEI who are already losing land due to rising oceans caused by climate change." Well as any farmer on the prairies can attest to we have all "lost land" by seeding a slough or low lying land that happens to flood after a rainstorm. Without any proof his supposed climate catastrophe is hearsay. Glenn shares his choices in life ie; electric car, solar panels, geothermal, regenerative farming practices etc that he claims save money, save energy, and save the environment. He claims he saves about $5000 each year on energy that he used to buy. I would like him to share how much he had to spend or invest to save that much? And if there are grant's or programs available for the average person to implement to their own households. A quick web search shows that Glenn worked at a uranium mine at McLean Lake. He made a living in resource extraction to help pay for these environmental decisions he has made. Point is we need and use resources daily. They have to be used and developed in order to have a strong economy. And they have to be affordable to the average consumer. When solar and wind can provide all our needs with 100 percent reliability in all environments
A
and in all locations then we wont need "fossil fuels." I believe that alternative energy options are designed to actually increase the price of all things we use daily. I would bet the proponents of these options are heavily invested and stand to make boatloads of money from the everyday consumer. I doubt their concern is "all about the environment." Our climate in western Canada doesnt allows us to live the same as other regions in Canada and around the world. Which probably explains Glenn's accompanying maps and results of the election and opinion on a warming world. We live in an area that experiences -40 to +40 temperatures. Most inhabited areas of the world do not experience these temperatures. In my 54 years I can recall every winter being cold and every summer being hot. Ask your parents or ask your grandparents what the weather was like years ago. They can tell you by experience because they have lived through it. Solar and wind power do not work good enough during our prairie winters. As time goes on technology will change things hopefully for the better. There have been advancements in everything and we can make our everyday conveniences better. Science has gotten so many things wrong in past predictions especially where weather and climates are targeted. Maybe we should concentrate on making the reliable power producing things, that we already use, better? Just saying ! Fraser Downie Harris, Saskatchewan
Three Generations of Vetters at Delisle Hotel
fter nearly 50 years of operation the Delisle Hotel will no longer be run by a member of the Vetter family. Myron Vetter, the third generation of owners, has decided it is time to move on. “It’s tough to make a decision like this” says Vetter “ This is where I was born and raised. It’s the only home that I and my brothers Sheldon and Marvin, had ever known and it is full of memories”. The hotel structure itself is a Delisle Heritage Building was constructed in 1907 an operated as St Amour’s Hardware, Delisle’s first business, until 1912. It then became home to various operations over the years; Royal Bank 1912 Cyr’s Theatre 1926 Miller’s Store 1935 Raymond Gesy’s Hardware and Hunter’s Drug Store 1946 Demchuk Bros. Hardware and Goodwin’s Drug Store 1947 and finally became a Licensed Beverage Room in 1948. Myron’s grandfather, John Vetter, took over the hotel in the early 70’s. It changed hands shortly afterwards and was operated by Jack Miller, but was soon back in the hands of the Vetter family. John’s son Ron Vetter became the second in line to run the business with his wife Zita who ran the cafe. Zita soon became famous for Zita’s Pizza and a family secret Pork Backribs recipe. Myron’s dad Ron passed away in 2007. “A lot has changed over the past 50 years, especially recently,” says Myron. “When they first brought in the smoking ban our business dropped considerably and never really bounced back fully. Myron goes on to explain that when the drinking and driving laws moved to .04 enforcement his business dropped even further. “It wasn’t just here”, he says. “but all rural hotels felt it since most of their customers have no way to get to and from town but to drive”.
The latest move by the provincial government to private liquor stores and allow more vendors to open up was strike three for Myron. “Once the changes for offsale came into effect, it kinda made up my mind for me. Our offsale numbers dropped by more than half, and I don’t see that ever coming back”. So Myron has set his sights on a new venture. He is moving to Tompkins, SK with his girlfriend Robin to take over the restaurant at the Co-op truck stop on Highway 1. “We look forward to bringing our food service experience to that community and expect to develope a strong trade from the highway traffic” says Vetter. “I will miss being where I have called home for all my life, but most of all I will miss all the people that I have come to know over those years” Myron goes on to say ‘“I look forward to making new friends in Thompkins but I will really miss all of the friends I am leaving behind. Many have been great supporters of my whole family for decades and I want them to know how much we have always appreciated them”.

Did you know …..The Town of Asquith pays a library levy of over $5,000 a year. Anyone living in Asquith can go to Saskatoon to the Wheatland Regional Library and get a library card that will let them access the Wheatland Library and any of its satellite libraries (i.e.in Perdue or Delisle). One can also use their Wheatland Regional Library card to go to the Saskatoon Public Library – one must show their current Wheatland card in order to receive a Saskatoon Public Library card. There are also many online applications that one can access through the Wheatland Regional Library. 2020 brings a new year, and of course with a new year comes the necessity to renew licenses. Pet licenses are now due. All individuals who own a cat or dog in Asquith are required to have a license for their pet. Cost of licenses is $10 for a spayed or neutered cat or dog or $20 for a non-spayed/non-neutered cat or dog. Failure to purchase a license will result in a fine, and you will still be required to purchase a license. 2020 Business Licenses are also now due. For more information, please contact the Asquith Town Office at 306-329-4341. Did you know……that if you take out a building permit, the onus is on the property owner to contact the building inspector to make a final inspection and to close the permit. Failure to do so results in your permit being left open and as such could pose a real problem for you should you decide to sell your property. If you aren’t sure whether or not your permit was finalized or closed, please feel free to contact the Asquith Town Office.

Delisle Fire Department Encourages Residents to Contact SaskPower to have Trees Trimmed from Power Lines in Yards and Confirm your Firefighting Coverage
R
esidents and landowners are encouraged to make sure they have adequate firefighting insurance coverage. Contact your insurance agent for guidance on what your individual needs are. For example: Volunteer fire departments receive and appreciate financial support from SaskPower re firefighting costs, however there are circumstances that the landowner could be responsible for firefighting costs associated with vegetation and power contact on their property and we feel the need to inform residents and landowners of SaskPower policy pertaining to this. When SaskPower receives an invoice for a fire call, a thorough investigation is conducted to determine the root cause of the incident. Wood poles are inspected in a 10- year cycle with 10% of the pole fleet being inspected each year. FARM REPORTS Finding Success in Challenging Times
T
he fifth annual Ranch Management Forum in December 2019 featured a panel of experts, who provided advice to producers on how to look ahead to the next production year after a challenging fall. A recurring theme among presenters was awareness and where beef producers should be focusing their attention, in order to prepare for the future. Kathy Larson, a research associate from the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Agriculture and Bioresources, highlighted the importance of good record keeping. Kathy stated, “a great manager has the ability to go back and utilize records” in making management decisions and being “low-cost” only goes so far. For beef producers, this means focusing on increasing your overall pounds of calf weaned in order to increase profit, which can be done through improved conception rates, calving rates, calving distribution, weaning rates, weaning weights and by reducing calf death loss.
Important components of a successful farm transition include: Setting personal and operational goals (which are very important in framing discussions); Clear communication with your family; Clarity around everyone’s current and future roles; Transitioning management and decision making duties; Training the successor(s) and identifying other human resource requirements or gaps; Addressing non-farming siblings or children, and; Employing conflict management. Val advised that it will be time to bring in accounting and legal experts when you have a good sense of the ideal result and to be a driver, not a passenger in the process. Your farm is unique and so is your transition. There is no single “right way” – you need to find the right way for you. If you are feeling any symptoms of stress, the Farm Stress Line is available 24/7. Call 1-800-667-4442. By Jenay Werle, PAg, Livestock and Feed Extension Specialist, Yorkton
It is also important for producers to use the records they are already keeping to make management decisions. The cost of production information varies greatly from ranch to ranch, so it does not help your operation to make decisions based on benchmarks. Paul Hammerton, a farm management advisor with MNP, discussed the importance of using financial metrics to evaluate your financial well-being. A strong working capital (current assets, less current liabilities) will help your farming operation better weather a storm. He suggested making a strong working capital a business priority and know what it is for your operation. He suggested financing capital purchases so that cash is not tied up. He also reminded producers to “keep to the speed limit,” meaning don’t grow, expand or replace when your working capital is low. Other important financial metrics include the risk ratio and debt servicing ability. Examining these metrics can help with risk management and mitigation decisions. Cynthia Beck is a farmer and therapist working in suicide prevention. She has seen indications of increased stress in the agriculture industry; specifically, an increase in mental health and suicide-related calls. She also reported the number one cause of farm injury is stress. With too much on their minds, farmers may not be fully aware and functional while working, which can lead to injury or death. Cynthia shared the following tips for farm safety:

Sleep. Sleep is key for mental and physical health. Sleep deprivation has been linked to increased rates of dementia later in life. Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water, as dehydration causes the brain to shrink. Be sure to eat well. Learn how to have a conversation that isn’t about the economics or logistics of farming. Ask yourself and others “How are you?” and give/seek a meaningful response. Practice having healthy conversations with each person in your farming operation, as it makes the hard conversations easier down the road. Val Panko, an agriculture transition specialist with Farm Credit Canada, spoke about the highlights of a successful farm transition process. She reminded participants that transition is a process, not a set date and there is a lot of work that should be done within the operation to prepare for the future of the farm before seeking outside expertise.

MP REPORT
F
or the second time in this 43rd Parliament, a Conservative motion has passed in the House of Commons. The Conservative motion ordered an immediate audit of over $186 billion in Liberal spending. This comes after the Parliamentary Budget Officer stated that he was not given enough information on this spending to do his job.
“The Liberals’ record on infrastructure is one of failure, and they have done everything in their power to hide that fact from Canadians. Now that the government can no longer hide behind their majority in the House, Parliamentarians have passed a motion to uncover the truth about how the $186.7 billion infrastructure program has been managed.
Luc Berthold, the Conservative Shadow Minister of Infrastructure, and the sponsor of the motion, commented on the audit:
Given the lack of transparency and accountability coming from the Trudeau government, Conservatives believe

this audit is necessary to determine why the Liberals’ infrastructure plan does not respect the Liberals’ promises. Multiple reports from the Parliamentary Budget Officer have shown that the Liberals have not been forthcoming with information about how the announced infrastructure funding has actually been used. We will use our strengthened Opposition in order to ensure that the Liberals cooperate fully with the Office of the Auditor General so that Canadians can get the answers they deserve. It’s time to
get shovels in the ground and Canadians back to work.” Despite their promise to be “open and transparent”, the Liberals voted against the motion en masse. However, the support of the rest of the House allowed the motion to pass. After 4 years of using their majority to hide from Canadians, the Liberals will now be forced to open their books and tell us exactly how they have been spending our hardearned tax dollars.
Grain Growers of Canada call for Immediate Relief from ‘Harvest from Hell’ Following a difficult harvest season, Canadian farmers should not be expected to pay increased taxes at a time when they can afford it least worsened. Our federal government must recognize that farmers should not be faced with an additional tax burden that reduces their competitiveness in the global marketplace. Farmers contribute to environmental sustainability by sequestering carbon, reducing water and input use, and improving soil health. However, with no alternative to fossil fuels to dry grain, the carbon tax fails to recognize farmers’ contribution and instead relies on punitive measures.
OTTAWA (January 29, 2020) - On behalf of 65,000 Canadian grain, oilseed and pulse producers, the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) are calling for immediate action to support Canadian farmers who have just been through the harvest from hell. In the short term, GGC farmer members should be directly reimbursed from the federal government for the millions of extra dollars in carbon tax they have paid to dry their grain.
GGC is working with member groups to compile data to provide to the Hon. Minister Bibeau to allow her department to find the best way forward. That said, this issue is too important to delay. The government needs to be looking at all available options to offer relief to farm families who are facing mounting costs. This is only a short-term solution, however. Grain drying is an annual requirement for many Canadian farmers. That is why the long-term solution is to fully exempt all fuels used on farming operations.
“The 2019 harvest season has put undue burdens on farmers’ livelihoods and every part of the country has been hit hard,” said GGC chair Jeff Nielsen from his farm in Olds, AB. “Beyond just the crop left in the field, farmers have faced major grain drying expenses, courtesy of the federal carbon tax, to ensure at least some crops make it to market.” After a difficult 2018, where net farm incomes dropped 45 per cent from the year prior, the trend has only
With a changing climate, there could be future years where significant grain drying is required for farmers to get their grain to market. The simplest solution for both farmers and the government is to completely exempt all fuels used in farming operations. This will avoid the need for any relief measures after events like last year’s harvest. Farmers require a legislative and regulatory environment that recognizes our positive contribution towards the climate solution to ensure a sustainable future for this vital industry.

“These costs are adding up and we cannot continue to pay the price for inaction,” added Nielsen. “A complete exemption for all fuels used on the farm is what farmers ultimately require to avoid these crises in the future and provide farmers with the resources to continue doing what we do best.”
