The RM Review Delivers... Every Minute, Every Day, Every Month
he RM Review, like seemingly everyone on the planet, makes use of modern technology to communicate. Through email, we send out a weekly events updates to our subscribers. Our website is updated daily with news from the community. Our social media followers are updated in an instant on accidents, fires, power outages, etc. and our monthly newspaper is also published to a free online reader.
The actual printed paper you hold in your hand is only published monthly, so the aforementioned delivery methods are a fantastic compliment to the paper. While I can make use of these high tech tools sitting on my couch in my underwear, the printed paper needs to be delivered differently. We send 70% of them out by Canada Post but the remaining papers I get to deliver myself. This is my favorite part of running the
RM Review. Seeing the countryside, buying local products, meeting people... I always learn something new in a way that tech delivery systems cannot do. Try putting down your phone and go for a drive or a walk and see what you are missing. Happy Valentines Day !

Chiefs Heading Down The Home Stretch
T
he Delisle Chiefs are just past the 3/4 mark of the season and it’s so far so good. Through 32 games, the Chiefs have a record of 31-1 and have an eye on clinching first overall in the Prairie Junior Hockey League Regular Season standings. Finishing first would guarantee them home ice advantage all the way through the PJHL’s President’s Cup Playoffs. To say this season has been a success so far, would be an understatement. It’s been a great step in the right direction after winning the North Division last year before bowing out in the PJHL Championship four games to one to the Regina Capitals. They’re staying grounded but, they also have their eye on the prize. The Chiefs have 8 games left (as of January 24th) and currently have a Magic Number of 3 to clinch first over all (combination of 3 Chiefs wins or Quakers losses). The Chiefs’ success this year has come largely on the strength of it’s defense and goaltending. Currently, Delisle has allowed a PJHLlow, 65 goals through 32 games (2.03 gaa/game). The tandem of Justin Gauthier and Jordan Berschiminsky are 1-2 in the league in goals against average and save percentage. Both have a goals against average under 2 and both have a save percentage higher than 0.930. Gauthier also leads the PJHL in shut-outs with 4. Chiefs GM, Ryan Marushak had glowing praise for his defensive corps and goaltending tandem. “Our goalies have been very strong all year. They’re making the initial saves or taking care to not give up many rebounds. Our team prides itself on the defensive end of the ice.”
The Chiefs returned 4 blue liners this year and added more depth when they signed Thomas Bollefer (Humboldt, SK) and Troy Kosmynka (Warman, SK). It’s a deep, veteran group that just goes about its work. That being said, it’s been a conscientious effort by the entire team to stick to it’s defensive systems and play as a unit. “We have to play as 5-man units and block shots. We’ve kept shots to the outside and cleared the front of the net for our goalies to be able to see the shots.” Offensively, the Chiefs have been led by forward Austin Linnen. He was acquired from Carrot River in October and currently sits third in PJHL scoring (32g-37a-69pts). Benson Thorpe (Vanscoy, SK) leads the team with 11 power play goals and has 47 points (23g, 24a). Delisle’s success though so far this season, hasn't been strictly because of three or four players. It’s been built around its depth up front and in the back end. When asked if he could highlight any players who have stood out, Marushak surmised that that’s not an easy question to answer. “We have a group of players who have really impressed all season. They’ve bought into the systems that are in place and worked together. It’s a very close knit group who want to be the best.” Delisle swept their 10 games against the PJHL South Division teams this year, a first for the franchise. Now they close out their season with 8 games against the North Division. All 8 games will be key for the Chiefs as they try to maintain their momentum going forward.
Perhaps one of the biggest keys thus far has been the play of the Chiefs Special Teams. They have been special. Through the first 32 games, the Chiefs penalty kill sits at the top of the league, killing penalties at a 90.51% efficiency rate. Couple that with a power play that has been at or near the top from about the 10-game mark on, and you have a recipe for success. Currently the power play is sitting third in the PJHL clicking on 24.87% of its chances. The Chiefs have to stay focused on their own task at hand though as their tremendous success thus far, has also put a target squarely on their backs. Everyone is trying to knock them off and stepping up their game when lining up against them. That’s a key motivator for Chiefs Head Coach, Eric Ditto. “We have to keep working and playing towards a complete 60 minute hockey game. We have to find ways to capitalize on the opportunities we’ve had. Lately, we’ve had good chances to make plays or score but we haven’t leaned on our stick hard enough or executed the way we should.” Now is the time of the season when everyone is scoreboard watching and checking the updated standings regularly. There’s battles going on up and down the standings as teams are jockeying for playoff positions. Welcome to the Best Time of the Year for hockey! The Chiefs are on the road in Kerrobert against the West Central Rage on Friday, January 25th to close out the January part of their schedule. They return home on Friday, February 1st when they host the Carrot River Outback Thunder. Game time is 8:00pm.

A Community Event License was issued to the Dangerous Goods Hockey Team to hold a beer garden at their tournament to be held on February 8th and 9th, 2019. The beer garden will run on Saturday the 9th of 2019 from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. The following appointments were made by Council for 2019: Wheatland Regional Library – Sue Sawicki; Legal – MacDermid Larmarsh; Auditor – Jensen Stromberg; Fire Chief – Colin Graham; EMO Co-ordinators- Patty Kraft and Lois Walker; Building Inspector – Build Tech; Board of Revision – Krismer and Associates. A Cemetery Reserve was created by Council in the amount of ten thousand six hundred and thirty dollars and fifty-six cents, the amount of the funds donated to the Asquith Cemetery by the Asquith United Church. It was decided to exempt Parcel B, Plan 101434115, Extension 32. The Town of Asquith will be providing the necessary training for Asquith Volunteer Fire Fighters to receive their Air Brake designation, due to upcoming legislative changes. Did you know…..The Town of Asquith pays a library levy of over $5,000 a year. Anyone living in Asquith can go to Saskatoon to the Wheatland Regional Library and get a library card that will let them access the Wheatland Library and any of its satellite libraries (i.e. in Perdue or Delisle). One can also use their Wheatland Regional Library card to go the Saskatoon Public Library – one just has to show their current Wheatland card in order to receive a Saskatoon Public Library card. There are also many online applications that one can access thru the Wheatland Regional Library. 2019 brings a new year, and of course with a new year comes the necessity to renew licenses. Pet
licenses are now due. All individuals who own a cat or a dog in Asquith are required to have a license for their pet. Cost of licenses is $10 for a spayed or neutered cat or dog or $20 for a nonspayed/non-neutered cat or dog. Failure to purchase a license will result in a fine, and you will still be required to purchase a license. 2019 Business Licenses are also now due. For more information, please contact the Asquith Town Office at 306-329-4341. Did you know….that if you take out a building permit, the onus is on the property owner to contact the building inspector to make a final inspection and to close the permit. Failure to do so results in your permit being left open and as such could pose a real problem for you should you decide to sell your property. If you aren’t sure whether or not your permit was finalized or closed, please feel free to contact the Asquith Town office.

Scheer Leads on the World Stage
S
ince Andrew Scheer’s successful trip to India, where his professionalism and business-first attitude garnered much respect at home and abroad, the Conservative Leader has taken to the world stage to fight for a principled foreign policy of promoting democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. Andrew Scheer’s Conservative Party introduced the Magnitsky Act and guided it into law – a rare feat for an Opposition party. This Act is, named after Russian anti-corruption activist Sergei Magnitsky, empowers the Canadian government to sanction corrupt foreign officials by freezing their finances and seizing their holdings. Late last year, after pressure from Andrew Scheer, Trudeau used the Magnitsky Act to sanction 14 Saudis accused of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Clearly, Canada needed the powers granted in the Magnitsky Act to respond to human rights violations around the world, yet it took nearly two years of pressure by the Conservatives before the Liberals supported this common-sense legislation.
This is but one example of the Liberal’s inaction on the world stage which has now become their pattern. Time and time again, Andrew Scheer has had to push Trudeau to take what should be basic, expected actions on international issues. Two weeks ago I wrote to you about Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, the two Canadians being held in Chinese prisons as, essentially, hostages. They were detained in response to the legal arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on an extradition warrant from the United States. It took weeks of pressure from Conservatives before Trudeau finally picked up the phone and called President Xi. The Prime Minister waited for far too long before advocating for the release of our citizens, weakening our standing with China. Now, Canada’s Ambassador to China, former Liberal minister John McCallum, has damaged Canada’s standing further by interfering with Meng’s extradition trial. The Ambassador held a press conference with Chinese media where he spoke about the legal defenses that could be used by her council to win the case. He later defended the extensive, 40 minute-long press conference by saying he “misspoke” when he outlined, in detail, various legal defenses. His interference and weak
excuses only serve to undermine the independence of our judicial system while confirming in Beijing’s eyes that this is about politics and not the rule of law. Given how Ambassador McCallum’s comments undermine the integrity of our judicial system and how vital these proceedings are to the rule of law, he should be held accountable. Andrew Scheer stated that were he Prime Minister, he would fire Ambassador McCallum for his inappropriate interference, yet Trudeau has seemingly refused to even consider the idea. For Trudeau, this is just another example of a failed approach to foreign policy. Time and time again, Trudeau has been forced to play catch-up on international issues. Within Canada, the Conservatives have taken the lead in recognizing ISIS’s genocide of the Yazidi (which the Liberals still refuse to acknowledge), in recognizing the Rohingya genocide, in supporting Venezuelan’s democratic rights, on China, on Saudi Arabia, with the Magnitsky Act, and in many other instances. Trudeau has consistently shown a shocking naiveté on the world stage. Thankfully, Andrew Scheer continues to fight for a principled, realistic foreign policy that stands for what is right and is more than just empty words and “sunny ways”.

MOONEY AGENCIES LTD. PURCHASES CHABEN-MCPHERSON AGENCIES LOCATED IN SASKATOON
M
ooney Agencies Ltd. is pleased to announce the purchase of ChabenMcPherson Agencies at 111 2nd Ave North in Saskatoon ! We continue to see consolidation in many industries and businesses including insurance. Agriculture has experienced much consolidation already whether family farms or huge agri-business. Larger farms and businesses are better-positioned to remain profitable through economies of scale, as they have the necessary resources to invest in technology, to drive innovation and to become more efficient as profit margins narrow. Consolidation is often the result of succession with aging demographics forcing more retirements. With regards to the insurance industry specifically, we have experienced increased consolidation in recent years as many businesses (both insurance companies and brokerages) are reaching for a larger share of the marketplace. Given that the insurance brokerage is a cornerstone business in many small communities, this trend
away from local ownership is concerning to some but will likely continue. In an effort to remain competitive and sustainable in this environment, Mooney Agencies has expanded our footprint with the purchase of Chaben-McPherson Agencies located in downtown Saskatoon. We remain entirely locally owned and family operated with the same commitment to support all of the communities that we serve. Chaben-McPherson Agencies was founded in 1975 by Bob Chaben and Lyle McPherson. The business then transitioned and has been operated by partners Doug Chaben and Hugh Sutherland since 2002. We extend a warm welcome to all of our new friends and clients in Saskatoon and wish Hugh Sutherland the best in his retirement. Please visit or contact any of our 4 locations for full service insurance advice including SGI motor license issuing services in Saskatoon, Vanscoy, Colonsay and Young. Mooney Agencies is an independent insurance broker, working for you rather than an insurance company

e are back to work and fun at Pike Lake Preschool! December was a great month with Christmas crafts, songs, and decorations around our room. The concert went really well - most of the kids sang, and those that didn't, they still stood with the rest of their classmates. I call that a success! Santa was awesome as always!! Thank you to all the parents for providing snacks for that day, and a special thank you to the PLCSA for donating treats to us!
