n July of 2007 Jack and Lorie Totter were blessed to be the new owners of, the then called, Sandyridge Gas & Grocery. Since then many things have happened and many changes have been made. Over the past seventeen years they completed three major renovations and several upgrades including an addition to the building, a new walk in cooler, new fuel tanks and pumps, a kitchen which provides food service and fresh baking, an increase to almost 450 mailboxes and much more. “Thinking back there have been so many events both good and bad we have made it through” says Lorie, “ including a fire, changing economic times and needs as well as the Covid pandemic” “In the last almost 17 years” Lorie continues, “ we have had the pleasure of knowing many staff members who have meant the world to us, some who have stayed a little while and some who have stayed for the long haul. Of course our customers who have stuck with us through it all, showing us how much they appreciate us being here.”

“We appreciate all the support over the years”, Lorie continues, “ and have very much enjoyed getting to know each and every one of you. The time has come for us to step back and pass the torch to new owners to make their mark.

Brenda Edel to be Saskatchewan NDP Candidate in Rosetown-Delisle for Next Provincial Election ROSETOWN – The Saskatchewan NDP has named Brenda Edel as candidate in Rosetown-Delisle for the next provincial election. She was nominated by Saskatchewan NDP members earlier this afternoon.

“I am honoured to be the Saskatchewan NDP candidate once again,” said Edel.

“I am proud to stand with Carla Beck as we work together to build a more accessible, brighter future for Saskatchewan.”

Brenda Edel is a strong community leader and advocate. She is a founding member and President of Barrier Free Saskatchewan. Edel has worked at SaskTel since 1993, and lives on an acreage in the RM of Vanscoy with her husband Greg.

The Christmas Gift

have been given a lot of Christmas gifts over the years - some of them useful and needed, some funny and some . . . hmm, curious is maybe the word.

And then there are the Christmas gifts that have carried a punch, that have had a significant impact on my life.

One gift in particular has caused me to look at myself differently, to look at the world and my place in it differently.

This was a gift that was given to me and Mrs. B a number of years ago by my mother-in-law, Barbara - it was a gift she had made for us.

The gift is a small photo album - the kind used for 4x6-inch pictures - and has a padded, muted floral-pattern cover.

The first page in the album is the title page and names the book as "The Book of Gratitudes or The Thank You Book".

After the title page, there are 46 more pages in this little album.

Mounted on each of the 46 pages is a photograph showing a gift Barbara had received and was thankful for.

And on each page - each page - facing the photograph there is a handwritten poem, just 3 or 4 lines long, describing the picture and why Barbara was thankful for it. There are a lot of "thank you"s in this little book and a lot of time and effort went into making it.

There is a variety of gifts, pictures, displayed in the album.

Some of the gifts are of various chores that had been done for her.

There is a picture of the shelf I had put up in front of the window in the garage that shows Kit the Cat sitting and sunning himself. (The cat was decidedly less grateful for the shelf than Barbara - but made up for it with an extra measure of disdain.)

There is a picture of the broom I used in the spring to sweep the winter mud out of the garage.

There is even a picture of the garage walls I painted, a job done during a summer visit (an "interesting" little story that comes later (May, 2023)).

Some of the pictures are of gifts given to Barbara by Mrs. B and her siblings.

There are pictures of some larger gifts, like the garage door opener and the air conditioning unit; and there are pictures of smaller gifts, like the wooden serving tray and the brass ornaments - no gift was too small to escape Barbara's gratitude.

And some of the pictures are of the whimsical and quirky gifts that were given with a sprinkling of humour.

There is the very vividly coloured blouse bought for Barbara in Mexico during one of our vacations; and there is the larger than life, huge, yellowfooted, black and white dappled chicken (sort of like Foghorn Leghorn, remember him?) made out of papermache. (A twin of the one we keep by our front door.)

The album also includes, most poignantly, pictures of celebrations and gatherings with her family and friends.

There is a picture of Barbara on her 70th birthday sitting on the living room couch with her husband, Merle, and their three grown children.

And a picture of Barbara and Merle at their 40th wedding anniversary celebration surrounded by their friends.

Barbara was so very thankful for her family and her friends.

For Barbara, all of these pictures chores performed, objects useful and decorative, her family and friends (especially her family and friends) - were pictures of gifts that she had been given and that she was thankful for.

And for gifts received, gratitude must be expressed.

There is also a big picture in this little book, a big picture made as a composite of all the smaller pictures, a big picture that shows Barbara’s gratitude for her life - all the gifts that made up her life - and her happiness with it.

What a wonderful thing it must be to go through life with such magnanimity, such big-heartedness, that you are thankful for every day that God gives you and thankful for every little thing that He puts in it.

And, for me, that is the real gift that is "The Book of Gratitudes".

It is the gift of learning to recognize all the gifts I have been given - especially all the family and friends.

It is the gift of understanding that every day is Christmas Day - full of gifts.

And it is the gift of appreciating that every day is Thanksgiving Day - so many gifts to be thankful for.

Sadly, this year again, we don't have to wrap Christmas presents for Barbara.

Gladly, though, we are still touched by her presence.

Merry Christmas, everybody - may your gifts be many.

Many, many, many.

Langham Community Connection - Save the Date “Shmeckfest” Event coming September 20-21, 2024 LANGHAM COMMUNITY CONNECTION, an event mimicking, in part, Freeman South Dakota’s Schmeckfest will be held in the town of Langham for all to enjoy.

The Freeman, SD Schmeckfest celebrates their community’s Mennonite culture annually by way of historical presentations, traditional Mennonite food, and trade sale vendors. We plan to do the same in Langham.

Our event, LANGHAM COMMUNITY CONNECTION, is being planned for the above date in conjunction with Culture Days 2024.

Friday September 20, 2024 the Langham Theatrical Company, and friends, will be presenting a PLAUTDEITSCH OVENT, featuring a Low German play titled, Eina Mut Frein (One Must Marry), Low German songs, skits, and stories by Ron Wahl.

Saturday September 21, 2024 the Langham Community Hall will host a variety of events beginning in the morning and continuing throughout the day. These events include, Mennonite history by Bill Janzen, Historical Overview of Mennonite Language and Literature by Walter Epp, a performance by Gabreille Luby’s Langham Ukrainian Dancers, Musical numbers including Gordon Martins, Helen Klassen, and others, as well as presentations from Radisson’s Ukrainian Connection Band and The Thursday Night Special Band from, Hague.

A repeat performance of The Plautdietsch Ovent will be held Saturday evening.

All of these activities will be presented in the Langham Community Hall with a schedule being posted prior to September 2024.

A Silent auction will be held both Friday and Saturday during the course of the day. We are asking businesses and or individuals who would like to promote their business to please donate items for the auction.

AN ETHNIC FOOD COURT will be held on Saturday Sept. 21, 2024 in the Langham Curling Rink, hours to be determined at a later date. *Note: Any organization or individual who wishes to participate in sale of food is urged to contact Annie Fisher at 306-230-0799 for more information or to reserve a table.

We are hopeful we will have a number of ethnic groups excited about joining this event and taking the opportunity of celebrating their specific dishes.

To date we have not organized a trade fair but will happily do so if the interest is there, let us know what wares your organization, farm, business, church group or club would like to offer for sale. Tables will be made available for rent to accommodate this.

Advance tickets will be sold for the Friday and Saturday Plautdeitsch Ovendt performances but all other scheduled hall events will be free of charge.

Delisle Senior Citizens Club Christmas Party Dec 10

T

he Delisle Senior Citizens Club provides services and networking opportunities to members and non-members. Our members are primarily from Delisle, Vanscoy and the RM of Vanscoy. We offer the opportunity for morning coffee five days a week, the opportunity to play cards four days a week and floor shuffle one day a week. We are started a Get Moving exercise program 2 days a week. We sponsor information sessions targeted at seniors such as mental health awareness/resources, scam alerts and more. We have a book and puzzle lending library. We host a cost neutral Christmas party for seniors in the area. Some of our meeting rooms are used for community groups such as the Delisle Interagency Group, Delisle and District Health Council and the Delisle Housing Authority. Through fundraising we raise money for other community projects such as the purchase of the new Zamboni for the rink, the Legion poppy campaign and other worthwhile community projects. We also rent out our facility and/or equipment for yoga, meetings, elections, flu and covid vaccination clinics, family functions, funeral lunches and Christmas Parties.

TOWN OF ASQUITH

squith Town Council held a regular council meeting on November 8, 2023. Attending was Mayor Gail Erhart, Deputy-Mayor Jackie Stobbe, and Councillors Darcy Stack, Pete Heck, Cecilia Mryglod, Jodi Nehring, and Wade Monks-Janzen. Also attending was C.A.O. Kathy Picketts and Office Assistant Kaila Montgomerie.

The meeting was called to order by Mayor Erhart at 6:59 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the October 2023, regular council meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the October 2023 financials and October 2023 bank reconciliation as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $47,397.88 and Accounts Payable of $46,726.63 was accepted as presented.

The Asquith Town Office will be closed for Christmas holidays from December 26, 2023 to December 28, 2023, open on December 29, and closed on January 1, 2024 A reminder letter has been sent out to all taxpayers that taxes must be paid by December 31, 2023. Any taxes not received by that date will be subject to a penalty of 15%.

ouncil held a regular meeting November 14th. Next spring, Shercom will, under warranty, replace the rubberized. pathways in Harold Worth Park.

Amanda Radford has taken over the combined position of Arena Scheduler and Recreation Liaison. Her new title is Leisure Services Co-ordinator.

A $100 donation will be made to TeleMiracle in memory of past council member Bill Carr.

A $100 donation will be made to the Delisle Golf Course in memory of past council member Syd Hill.

Certain various accounts will be added to taxes if they remain unpaid as of December 31, 2023.

The Town of Delisle entered into a new fire and protective services agreement with the City of Saskatoon. These services would only be used if our local fire department requires assistance.

The Council and Staff of the Town of Delisle want to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

VILLAGE OF VANSCOY Update on Water Projects his fall, construction of a new water main was completed along 1st Avenue and Main Street. The project added several new hydrants along Main Street to improve fire suppression coverage in the Village.

The installation of the new main was successful and significantly improved distribution capacity throughout the Village, while also improving flow routing.

Alongside the water main construction, the new water pumphouse was commissioned and started up in early October. Since the end of October, the facility has been reliably distributing water to the Village. The final stages of the project are expected to be completed over the coming months, with some minor seasonal work expected following spring thaw. The new pumphouse replaced the existing aged infrastructure and significantly improved the pumping capacity of the system. It will provide a reliable distribution source for the Village’s growth and operation for many years.

These two water projects were critical for the Village’s distribution network, providing a system with improved reliability and increased capacity for fire suppression and peak water flow demands.

The 2023 Taxes are due December 31. Any amounts that remain unpaid after that date will be assessed a 10% penalty. Any outstanding utility amounts will added to the Tax Roll as of December 31 and become subject to the penalty and Tax Enforcement.

Delisle and Area Angel Tree Program is Underway

C

hristmas is fast approaching! The most merry time of the year, but also sometimes a really tough time, where struggles and hardship of all kinds feel even heavier than usual.

Our goal is to brighten this season a little bit for our whole community.

A big Thank You to everyone that have assisted us, by sending in nominations for the program. This is step 1 of our program and vital for its success. The Tree at HUB International (209 1st W, Delisle) is now decorated with tags.

Every tag represents a household and every member of the household gets to request one need item and one want item.

It is now time for step 2 of the process, where our Community Angels jump into action and stop by HUB, pick up a tag, go shopping for gifts, wrap them and bring them back by the 13th, ready to go under someone’s tree.

These gifts are not big-ticket items, but small items that can help make the Christmas season a little lighter and a little warmer. If you are able to be a Community Angel we encourage you to try it out – it is a wonderful feeling guaranteed to make your Christmas season feel a little brighter too - and our program entirely depends on the generosity of the Community Angels. Year after year we are humbled by people's willingness to give in this community and we Thank You in advance for your incredible generosity!

Step 3 happens between Dec 13 and 17, which is our delivery day, where we finish up the food hampers and go shopping for any “tags” left on the tree! All your cash donations go toward this and are also always appreciated beyond words!

Keep an eye out for food drives and food donation boxes around the community too for the food hampers! Food donations are another wonderful way to support the Angel Tree.

As something new this year, the Angel Tree has- and is- also doing a few community events raising funds for the program. We did a co-op bbq in October, we served lunch at the Skate Delisle Craft Show in November, and we are hosting a free family meet and greet with Santa himself at Creekside on December 13 6 to 8 pm with a silver collection for the Angel Tree. We want to also send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone that are attending our events and supporting the Angel Tree in this way!

Operation Santa Helping Asquith Families for Twenty Four Years

A

squith’s Operation Santa is a Christmas Hamper program that was formed by a group of concerned citizens in Asquith who wanted to help families in need.

The program is now starting year twenty-four. Every year, the community of Asquith and area is generous in their support, both monetary and in donated grocery items.

Gifts for the children of families in need have been donated in past years, as well as lovely hand-knitted toques and mittens for the children.

Last year, the program provided hampers and groceries to eleven family units, in which there were nineteen children. Thanks to the generosity of the community, a small gift for each child was also provided with the hamper.

The program is being run again this year, with a goal to provide grocery and Christmas Meal hampers, as well as small gifts for the children, to the families that are in need. Request forms are available at the Asquith Co-op, the Post Office, and the Town office.

All recipients’ names are very confidential; we protect each person’s dignity.

Applicants are screened to ensure that help is directed where most needed.

All requests for hampers MUST be turned in to the Asquith Town Office by December 15, 2023.

If you want to donate a small gift for a child, this must be turned in to the Town office prior to the December 15, 2023, deadline.

Pike Lake - Chief Whitecap Christmas Bird Count December 30

M

ost of the migratory birds that spend time in our area have now departed. Fortunately, some species stay year-round, adding life and interest to the winter landscape. They are the focus of Christmas Bird Counts held across North America each year.

Last year on the Pike Lake – Chief Whitecap Christmas Bird Count, 28 eager observers, including ten resident feeder watchers, found 2483 birds of 29 different species. That’s a fairly typical result, but, of course, there are always highs, lows and the occasional surprise.

For example, the count for gray partridge (also known as Hungarian partridge or Huns) was higher than it has been since the 1970s. [Counts in other parts of the province had similar results.] We also found a record high number of rock pigeons, especially in the area south and west of Pike Lake provincial park.

On the other hand, last year was not a redpoll year. These little finches live in the north and only wanders south every other year or so, always in bunches, likely in response to the supply or lack of tree seeds in their home territory. Bohemian waxwings were also in the hundreds rather than the thousands last year, found mostly in and north of the park. Waxwings will wander to wherever they find fruit and berries; apparently pickings were better elsewhere last year.

We found chickadees and nuthatches in good numbers, likely in response to the stocked birdfeeders in the area.

Woodpeckers also happily take advantage of suet or nuts offered in birdfeeders. Both the downy woodpecker and the almost identical but slightly larger hairy woodpecker were well represented in last year’s count. Five teams reported pileated woodpecker sightings. Typically

found in the boreal forest, this striking bird needs large trees for nesting. A small population has existed in the Pike Lake area probably since the mid-1990s.

This year the Pike Lake – Chief Whitecap Christmas Bird Count is scheduled for Saturday, December 30th. As the count organizer, I’m really hoping that the weather will be decent, that area birdfeeders will be well stocked and that those of you who have welcomed our visits to count birds will do so again. [We count only what we can see from the road unless we have permission to be on a property.] If you live in the count area and have not been visited in the past, but wouldn’t object to a couple of birdwatchers making a brief foray around your yard, please get in touch with me, and I’ll get you connected with the team covering your area. And if you’d like to become part of a team yourself, or to observe and report the bird activity at your own feeder(s) to contribute to the count, please either register through the Saskatoon Nature Society website (saskatoonnature.org/field-trips/), or contact me (donna.bruce@sasktel.net or 306-956-3437). CHRISTMAS MORNING CASSEROLE 2 cups ham, diced 1 bag hash browns 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded 1 cup smoked Gouda cheese, grated (can substitute mozzarella or cheddar) ½ cup green onion, chopped 5 eggs 1 cup milk ½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt ½ black pepper ¼ teaspoon ¾ cup butter melted Great way to use up leftover ham!

Preheat oven to 350ºF. In a casserole dish, layer hashbrowns, ham and cheese. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together green onions, eggs, milk, sour cream, pepper, salt and butter. Pour mixture over casserole and bake for an hour.

Makes 6 servings.

COFFEE CREAMERS

2 cups sugar ½ cup margarine 2 eggs 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ¾ teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon cinnamon 3 cups apples (diced), preferably Gala or Granny Smith In a large bowl beat sugar, margarine, and eggs until creamy.

In another bowl sift together flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon and add to the mixture. Mix well to form a batter.

Add apples and fold into batter.

Bake in a 9” x 13” pan at 350 °F for 45 minutes.

Joan Sparrow - Vanscoy ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH WITH CARDAMOM AND ORANGE 1 butternut squash, about 750g (1 1/2 lb) 1 large red onion 2 tbsp olive oil For the glaze 8 cardamom pods 20g (small oz) muscovado sugar 3 tbsp fresh orange juice

Add spices to the base to make:

Peel the squash, remove the seeds and cut each half into 5 or 6 pieces. Boil the squash in salted water for 3 minutes then drain.

Gingerbread Creamer 1 3/4 C. Half & Half Cream 1 - 14 oz Sweet Condensed Milk 6 Tbsp. Molasses 1 1/2 Tsp. Ginger 1 1/2 Tsp. Cinnamon 3/4 Tsp. Cloves 3/4 Tsp. Nutmeg Vanilla Mint Creamer 2 Tsp Vanilla 1 Tsp Peppermint Extract

Preheat oven to 250 F. Mix crackers and cereal together in large roasting pan.

Whisk remaining ingredients together in a separate bowl. Pour over bits and bites and mix until coated.

Bake in oven for approx. 2 hours, stirring every 15 minutes. After 2 hours all moisture should be gone. If not, bake another 15 - 30 minutes.

Cool, then bag and seal

Base Ingredients: Combine in mason jar: 1 3/4 C. Half & Half Cream 1 - 14 oz Sweet Condensed Milk

Eggnog Creamer 1 1/2 Tsp. Nutmeg 1 1/2 Tsp. Rum Extract

1 (225g) box Cheese bits (Nips or Goldfish crackers) 1 (225g) box Mini Ritz Crackers 6 C. Cheerios 6 C. Shreddies 6 C. Pretzels 2 C Butter (melted) 1/3 C. Worchestershire Sauce 2 Tbsp. Tabasco 1 Tbsp. Garlic Powder 1 Tbsp. Onion Powder 1 Tbsp. Salt 1 Tsp. Chili Powder

Cut the onion into 6 segments and put in roasting tin with the squash and olive oil, coating well. Roast at 200C (400F) for around 30 minutes until tender and colouring on the edges.

To make the glaze, crush the cardamom pods in a pestle and mortar. Extract the seeds, chuck the pods, then crush the seeds until they resemble coarse ground black pepper. Mix the seeds with the orange juice, sugar and adjust for taste with salt and pepper.

EGGNOG CHEESECAKE Beat together: 1 Vanilla cake mix 1/3 C. Butter 1/3 C.Eggnog 1/2 Tsp. Rum Extract Press 1/2 of mixture into an 8x8 pan and set aside.

Beat together: 1 - 8 oz. Cream Cheese 1/4 C. Sugar Add and mix together: 1/4 C. Eggnog 1/4 Tsp. Nutmeg 1/2 Tsp Rum Extract Pour on crust in pan. Crumble the rest of first mixture on top.

Bake at 350 F for 40 minutes. Remove and cool Glaze: Mix together: 1/4 C. Icing Sugar 1 Tbsp + 1 Tsp Eggnog Nutmeg

Shake

Toss the roasted veg gently in the glaze and roast for 15 minutes more, tossing a couple of times.

Drizzle over top and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Let set.
