Tired of slow or inconsistent internet service? Xplore (previously Xplornet Communications) is currently rolling out ‘ fibre to the premises’ (right to your door) and 5G broadband internet to rural customers right across the country Xplore is investing $500 million by 2025 to deploy state of the art scalable fibre Internet and fibre powered 5G fixed wireless tech nology in its facilities based network

“Xplore is Canada’s fibre and 5G company for rural living We’re com mitted to the relentless pursuit of an improved broadband experience for the better everyday living of rural Canadians,” says Melissa Grecco, Xplore’s manager of government relations and stakeholder affairs

“Our investment in improved internet will benefit rural Canadians for years

to come, even as data usage and the number of connected devices grows Xplore, has been in the internet business for nearly 20 years Since the company s earliest days it has focused on providing internet connectivity to rural Canadians

“We believe everyone should be able to connect without compromise We rebranded as Xplore because we believe that our customers should be able to access the internet and explore whatever they wish Rural Canadians deserve reliable internet access no different than those living in the hearts of Canada’s biggest cities,” says Grecco

Fibre Internet is the fastest Internet technology available today, allowing download and upload speeds of up to

a gigabit per second Xplore currently offers giga bit speed fibre service to rural customers in parts of Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, with additional fibre projects under way in seven provinces

Xplore offers customers unlimited data

“We know that our customers want to be more and more connected and on more devices than ever before, says Grecco “Unlimited data is critical because it means there’s no limit to what our customers can do online, whether that’s surfing the web at home, powering their business, connecting to virtual healthcare, or learning and working from home ”

Xplore has a long history of providing vital internet connectivity to rural Canadians Founded in Woodstock, New Brunswick Xplore has become Canada’s largest rural focused Internet provider to both residential and business customers

Last year, Xplore launched plans offering download speeds up to 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds up to 10 Mbps with unlimited data to over half a million homes as a result of investments in their LTE fixed wireless network The Government of Canada previ ously announced its goal to connect all Canadians to 50/10 Mbps speeds in an effort to close the connectivity gap and so that all Canadians have access to fast and reliable Internet, no matter where they live

Now, the installation of a fibre network means Xplore is taking another big step to eliminate the digital divide between urban and rural Canadians, allowing small town and farming Canadians at their fingertips access to the world at much higher speed

Greco says Xplore values the impor tance of Canadian farmers, and is committed to ensuring it delivers the internet access today’s farmers need

“For farmers, a reliable Internet connection is key for so many functions It s vital for record keeping, whether that’s for production records or traceability in food production It can help automate tasks, reduce costs and waste, even improve yields More and more farmers now sell their products online or use the internet to source inputs and in the case of cattlemen genetics from across Canada and beyond Farm businesses no longer have to be limited to the immediate area they operate in; if they re connected by Xplore, they have the option to grow globally if they so choose ”

Xplore announced its rebranding from Xplornet this past September

As Allison Lenehan, president and CEO said at the time, “This is the next era of our company’s story a new name, new brand, new world class technologies, and a renewed commitment to supporting and improving rural living for our customers ”

The Christmas Gift Down the Road by

Ihave been given a lot of Christmas gifts over the years some of them useful and needed, some funny and some hmm, curious is maybe the word

And then there are the Christmas gifts that have carried a punch, that have had a significant impact on my life

One gift in particular has caused me to look at myself differently, to look at the world and my place in it differently

This was a gift that was given to me, and Mrs B, a number of years ago by my mother in law, Barbara it was a gift she had made for us It's a small photo album the kind used for 4x6 inch pictures and has a padded, muted floral pattern cover

The first page in the album is the title page and names the book as "The Book of Gratitudes or The Thank You Book"

And some of the pictures are of the whimsical and quirky gifts that were given with a sprinkling of humour There is the very vividly coloured blouse bought for Barbara in Mexico during one of our vacations; and there is the larger than life, huge, yellow footed, black and white dappled chicken (sort of like Foghorn Leghorn, remember him?) made out of paper mache (A twin of the one we keep by our front door )

The album also includes, most poignantly, pictures of celebrations and gatherings with her family and friends

There is a picture of Barbara on her 70th birthday sitting on the living room couch with her husband, Merle, and her three grown children

And a picture of Barbara and Merle at their 40th wedding anniversary celebration surrounded by their friends Barbara was so very thankful for her family and her friends

After the title page, there are 46 more pages in this little album Mounted on each of the 46 pages is a photograph showing a gift Barbara had received and was thankful for And on each page each page facing the photograph there is a handwritten poem, just 3 or 4 lines long, describing the picture and why Barbara was thankful for it A lot of effort went into making this little book

There is a variety of gifts, pictures, displayed in the album Some of the gifts are of various chores that had been done for her

There is a picture of the shelf I had put up in front of the window in the garage that shows Kit the Cat sitting and sunning himself (The cat was decidedly less grateful for the shelf than Barbara but made up for it with an extra measure of disdain ) There is a picture of the broom I used in the spring to sweep the winter mud out of the garage

There is even a picture of the garage walls I painted, a job done during a summer visit (an "interesting" little story that comes later)

Some of the pictures are of gifts given to Barbara by her children

There are pictures of some larger gifts, like the garage door opener and the air conditioning unit; and there are pictures of smaller gifts, like the wooden serving tray and the brass ornaments no gift was too small to escape Barbara's gratitude

For Barbara, all of these pictures chores performed, objects useful and decorative, her family and friends (especially her family and friends) were pictures of gifts that she had been given and was thankful for And for gifts received, gratitude must be expressed

There is also a big picture in this little book, a big picture made as a composite of all the smaller pictures, a big picture that shows Barbara’s gratitude for her life all the gifts that made up her life and her happiness with it

What a wonderful thing it must be to go through life with such magnanimity, such big heartedness, that you are thankful for every day that God gives you and thankful for every little thing that He puts in it And, for me, that is the real gift that is "The Book of Gratitudes"

It is the gift of learning to recognize all the gifts I have been given especially all the family and friends

It is the gift of understanding that every day is Christmas Day full of gifts

And it is the gift of appreciating that every day is Thanksgiving Day so many gifts to be thankful for

Sadly, we won't have to wrap our presents to Barbara this year Gladly, though, we are still touched by her presence

Merry Christmas, everybody may your gifts be many Many, many, many

Annual Pike Lake Whitecap Christmas Bird Count on January 2nd

In spite of winter’s cold and snow, you can always count on at least a few birds to add some life to the year ’ s shortest days Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) originated in 1900 as an alternative to Boxing Day bird hunts Now the CBC is North America’s longest running citizen science project, comprising more than 2000 counts in the Western Hemisphere The informa tion gathered feeds into one of the world’s largest sets of wildlife survey data, and is used by researchers, conser vationists, and plan ners

Saskatoon Nature Society members began conducting Christmas Bird Counts in the Pike Lake Whitecap area fifty years ago

Over the years we ’ ve accumulated inter esting and valuable data about bird pop ulations changes and trends On average, over the past 20 years, 34 par ticipants have found 29 different species of birds Of course averages can be de ceiving Participant numbers have var ied from 20 to 46, weather being one major factor The number of species has varied from 22 to 35

We’re never sure what we will find from one year to the next, which is part of the appeal Last year we found fewer species than usual, and some of the species we usually find were nowhere to be seen no owls, red breasted nuthatches, American robins (which have been pretty common around the lake, where they can access open water and fruit trees), and no northern flick ers (for the fifth consecutive year) On the other hand, there were heaps of snow buntings in the fields last year, 1064 of them, and 542 common redpolls, which is an in crease of more than 100% over what we typically find Last winter was definitely a redpoll year! It’s unlikely we’ll see anywhere near those numbers this year But perhaps the number of sharp tailed grouse will be up again; last year ’ s 28 birds was a 10 year low The same was true with magpies; the count of 80 birds was the lowest it has been since 1988!

As the count organizer, I’m really hop ing Monday, January 2nd will be a de cent day weather wise, and that we’ll have enough volunteers to cover the

Operation Santa Helping Asquith Families for Twenty Three Years

“Operation Santa” is a group of concerned citizens in Asquith who want to help needy people, especially at the Christmas season

We are starting our twenty third year with our “Operation Santa” program The community of Asquith and area were again generous last year in their support, both monetary and in donated grocery items We provided hampers to eight incredibly grateful family units, and a small gift for 8 very happy children!

We are running the program again this year We aim to provide grocery and Christmas meal hampers, as well as small gifts for the children, to the families that are needy Recipient’s names are very confidential We protect each person ’ s dignity (Our other records are open to the public)

We are appealing to our entire com munity to be a part of this We would thank you for any help that you might be able to give, be it in the form of a food drive for donated grocery items or a cash donation We do not give cash out to families or individuals, rather all cash donations are used to purchase ap propriate hamper items, locally if possible All requests for hampers must be turned in by Friday, December 9, 2022,

so perhaps your organization would like to purchase a gift or a toy for a child as a way of contributing If so, all gifts must be turned in to the Town Office prior to the Dec 9th deadline We welcome any participation you choose Thank you for your consideration

Songs of the Season

All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth

Every body stops and stares at me These two teeth are gone as you can see I don’t know just who to blame for this catastrophe! But my one wish on Christmas Eve is as plain as it can be!

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth!

Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth, then I could with you “Merry Christmas ”

It seems so long since I could say, “Sister Susie sitting on a thistle!”

Gosh oh gee, how happy I’d be, if I could only whistle (thhhh)

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth, then I could wish you “Merry Christmas!”

Angels We Have

Heard on High

Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains: And the mountains in reply echoing their joyous strains

Refrain

Glo ria in excelsis D eo, Glo ria in excelsis D eo

Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why you joyous songs prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heav’nly song?

Refrain

Come to Bethlehem, and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ, the Lord, our new born King

Refrain

Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen But do you recall The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Had a very shiny nose And if you ever saw it You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer Used to laugh and call him names They never let poor Rudolph Join in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say, “Rudolph with your nose so bright Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”

Then how the reindeer loved him As they shouted out with glee Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer You’ll go down in history!

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus Underneath the mistletoe last night She didn’t see me creep down the stairs to have a peep; She thought that I was tucked up in my bedroom fast asleep Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus Underneath his beard so snowy white; Oh, what a laugh it would have been If Daddy had only seen Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night

O Holy Night

O holy night!

The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour ’s birth Long lay the world In sin and error pining ‘Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn, Fall on your knees!

O hear the angels voices! O night, divine!

O night, when Christ was b O night, divine! O night, O night divine!

Frosty the Snowman

Frosty the snowman Was a jolly happy soul, With a corn cob pipe and a button nose And two eyes made out of coal; Frosty the snowman, is a fairy tale they say, He was made of snow but the children know How he came to life one day There must have been some magic In that old silk hat they found ‘Cause when they put it on his head He began to dance around Oh, Frosty the snowman Knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, ‘Let’s run and we’ll have some fun Now before I melt away!’

Down to the village, with a broomstick in his hand,

Running here and there all around the square, Saying, ‘Catch me if you can!’ He led them down the streets of town Right to the traffic cop, And he only paused a moment When he heard him holler ‘Stop!’

For Frosty the snowman had to hurry on his way But he waved goodbye, saying, ‘Don’t you cry I’ll be back again same day!’

Thumpety thump thump, (2) Look at Frosty go, thumpety thump thump, (2) Over the hills of snow

Santa Claus is Coming To Town

You better watch out You better not cry Better not pout I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town

He’s making a list, And checking it twice; Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice Santa Claus is coming to town

He sees you when you’re sleeping He knows when you’re awake He knows if you’ve been bad or good So be good for goodness sake!

O! You better watch out! You better not cry Better not pout, I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town Santa Claus is coming to town

Silent Night

Silent night, Holy night

All is calm, all is bright, ‘Round you virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, Holy night

Shepherds quake, at the sight

Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing,”Alleluia!” Christ the Savior is born Christ the savior is born

Silent night, Holy night

Son of God, love’s pure light

Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus Lord at Thy birth Jesus Lord at Thy birth

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow

In a one horse open sleigh O'er the fields we go Laughing all the way Bells on bob tails ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to laugh and sing sleighing song tonight

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells

Jingle all the way

Oh, what fun it is to ride

In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh

A day or two ago

I thought I'd take a ride

And soon Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot We got into a drifted bank And then we got upsot

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells

Jingle all the way

Oh, what fun it is to ride

In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way

Oh, what fun it is to ride

In a one horse open sleigh yeah

Jingle bells, jingle bells

Jingle all the way

Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh
